O2 plasma-modified carbon nanotube for sulfamethoxazole degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation: Synergism of radical and non-radical pathways boosting water decontamination and detoxification

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a widely used antibiotic, has triggered increasing attention due to its extensive detection in wastewater effluent, causing serious ecological threats. Herein, a carbon-based heterogeneous catalyst was developed by the O2 plasma-etching process, regulating oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) and defects of carbon nanotubes (O-CNT) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for highly efficient SMX abatement. Through adjusting the etching time, the desired active sites (i.e., C=O and defects) could be rationally created. Experiments collectively suggested that the degradation of SMX was owing to the contribution of synergism by radical (•OH (17.3%) and SO4•- (39.3%)) and non-radical pathways (1O2, 43.4%), which originated from PMS catalyzed by C=O and defects. In addition, the possible degradation products and transformation pathways of SMX in the system were inferred by combining the Fukui function calculations and the LC-MS/MS analysis. And the possible degradation pathway was effective in reducing the environmental toxicity of SMX, as evidenced by the T.E.S.T. software and the micronucleus experiment on Vicia faba root tip. Also, the catalytic system exhibited excellent performance for different antibiotics removal, such as amoxicillin (AMX), carbamazepine (CBZ) and isopropylphenazone (PRP). This study is expected to provide an alternative strategy for antibiotics removal in water decontamination and detoxification.

Photo-Fenton process at natural conditions of pH, iron, ions, and humic acids for degradation of diuron and amoxicillin

Effect of ferric ions at concentrations typically found in natural waters (0.05 to 1.06 mg L^-1) and low H₂O₂ concentrations (between 0.5 and 17.9 mg L^-1) on simulated sunlight-induced (300 W m^-2) photo-Fenton degradation at initial neutral pH (7.0) of amoxicillin and diuron in Milli-Q water was studied using an rotatable central composite experimental design 2² with a central and two axial points. H₂O₂ concentration was the parameter playing the key role on the degradation of both pollutants. Despite that initial pH was 7.0 in Milli-Q water, this latter decreased rapidly in the first minutes, reaching values of 3.5 and 5.0 for diuron and amoxicillin respectively after 15 min of simulated sunlight irradiation. In contrast, in presence of bicarbonate/carbonate (HCO₃^-/CO₃⁼), fluoride (F^-), and humic acids (HAs) at concentrations found often in surface and well waters with ferric ion and H₂O₂ concentrations of 0.3 and 9.7 and 15.2 mg L^-1 respectively, both pollutants exhibited a strong degradation keeping the circumneutral pH. Amoxicillin and diuron degradation byproducts found by HPLC/MS were compatible with HO^• and/or CO₃^-• radical attack. Several photo-induced processes such as photo-Fenton (by dissolved ferric-HA complexes), heterogeneous photocatalysis (by colloidal iron), UV-B H₂O₂ photolysis, irradiated-dissolved organic matter, and their reactions with pollutants would be the main oxidative route responsible of degradations. These findings demonstrated that it could be possible using iron concentrations often found in natural waters to oxidize via photo-Fenton processes among other events, organic pollutants at natural pH conditions.

Photodegradation of neonicotinoid insecticides in water by semiconductor oxides

The photocatalytic degradation of three neonicotinoid insecticides (NIs), thiamethoxam (TH), imidacloprid (IM) and acetamiprid (AC), in pure water has been studied using zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) as photocatalysts under natural sunlight and artificial light irradiation. Photocatalytic experiments showed that the addition of these chalcogenide oxides in tandem with the electron acceptor (Na2S2O8) strongly enhances the degradation rate of these compounds in comparison with those carried out with ZnO and TiO2 alone and photolytic tests. Comparison of catalysts showed that ZnO is the most efficient for the removal of such insecticides in optimal conditions and at constant volumetric rate of photon absorption. Thus, the complete disappearance of all the studied compounds was achieved after 10 and 30 min of artificial light irradiation, in the ZnO/Na2S2O8 and TiO2/Na2S2O8 systems, respectively. The highest degradation rate was noticed for IM, while the lowest rate constant was obtained for AC under artificial light irradiation. In addition, solar irradiation was more efficient compared to artificial light for the removal of these insecticides from water. The main photocatalytic intermediates detected during the degradation of NIs were identified.
