The Effect of Service Learning on the Development of Trait Emotional Intelligence and Adversity Quotient in Youths: An Experimental Study

This study aims to determine the effect of service learning (SL) on the trait emotional intelligence and adversity quotient of Chinese undergraduate students in Hong Kong. The SL programme lasted six months (at least 80 service hours). In a pre-test-post-test experimental design, students who participated in the SL during that time period were classified as the experimental group (n = 139; 69 male, 70 female), whereas students who never participated in SL were classified as the comparison group (n = 133; 66 male, 67 female). Both groups of participants were asked to finish the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS) and the Adversity Response Profile^® (ARP) before and after the SL programme. The results showed that there were no significant differences in WLEIS and ARP scores (at the pre-test) between the experimental and comparison groups. The results further revealed that students in the experimental group had better improvements in WLEIS and ARP than those in the comparison group after they completed SL. These findings provide valuable insights and implications for incorporating components of SL into interventions for youths to improve their ability to process emotions and overcome adversity.

The role of emotional quotients and adversity quotients in career success

Career success has been considered equally important for both personal and organizational development. The purpose of the current study was to examine how trait emotional quotient (EQ) and adversity quotient (AQ) contribute to individuals' objective career success (job position) and subjective career success (organizational commitment). Participants included 256 Chinese adults who completed four measurements-the Self-Reported Emotional Intelligence Test, Resilience Scale, Grit Scale, and the Affective, Continuance, and Normative Commitment Scale-and provided demographic information. After validating the four scales used in this study, multiple regression analysis revealed that only one aspect of trait EQ (regulation of emotion) positively predicted one component of organizational commitment (affective commitment). Adversity quotient was measured on two dimensions: resilience and grit. Only consistency of interest (grit) positively predicted affective commitment. Perseverance of effort (grit) and acceptance of self and life (resilience) positively predicted normative commitment. Personal competence (resilience) positively predicted continuance commitment but negatively predicted normative commitment. Only acceptance of self and life (resilience) positively predicted job position. Overall, these findings demonstrate the specific influence of trait EQ and AQ on career success for organizational professionals who want to improve organizational productivity as well as individuals who want to achieve success at work.

Mediating Effects of Copying Style on the Relationship between Parenting Style and Adversity Quotient of Nursing Students

Background

Nursing is known as a stressful job; nursing students as the future workforce particularly require the adversity quotient (AQ) in order to successfully overcome difficulties and setbacks encountered amid their studies and in their future workplaces.

Aim

To explore the relationship among parenting style, coping styles, and AQ, and investigate the mediating effects of coping style on the relationship between parenting style and AQ among nursing students.

Methods

The study employed a cross-sectional and correlational design. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit nursing students (n = 158 valid) from a higher education institute in Macao SAR. Four measuring instruments were used, including (1) The Demographic Information Form, (2) The Adversity Quotient Scale, (3) The Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, and (4) The Chinese Version of the Parental Styles Scale.

Results

The associations only existed between negative mother-parenting styles, negative coping styles and AQ, passive mother-parenting styles and passive copying (r = -0.166, 0.276, 0.266, 0.232, 0.229, 0.186, 0.207, P < 0.05); there is no statistically significant correlation between father parenting style and the score of AQ, negative coping style, and positive coping style at all. The obtained model fitting index: χ2/df = 1.191, RMSEA = 0.035, SRMR = 0.0305, TLI = 0.991, CFI = 0.997, indicating that the fitting indices of the model are all within the acceptable range, and there is a significant mediating effect of coping styles on the relationship between mother parenting styles and AQ of Macao nursing students.

Conclusions

Coping styles play an important role in mediating the relationship between parenting styles, particularly, mothering styles and AQ of Macao nursing students. Special attention should be paid to cultivating students' positive coping strategies in order to mediate the negative mothering styles and to enhance their AQ for better adapting to the challenges faced by them in school and in future working places and social environments.

The mediating effects of adversity quotient and self-efficacy on ICU nurses' organizational climate and work engagement

AIM

This study aimed to explore the mediating effects of adversity quotient and the moderating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between the organizational climate and the work engagement of intensive care unit nurses.

BACKGROUND

A good organizational climate can contribute to a high level of work engagement. Adversity quotient and self-efficacy are the key factors affecting nurses' work engagement, while the mechanism of these factors in the organizational climate and work engagement remains unclear. This study was conducted to contribute to the relevant field research.

METHODS

The study used a cross-sectional research design and surveyed 323 intensive care unit nurses working in a public hospital in China. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods: Pearson correlation analysis and PROCESS macro Model 7 in the regression analysis.

RESULTS

Organizational climate was positively correlated with work engagement and adversity quotient. The indirect effect of organizational climate on work engagement through adversity quotient was positive. Furthermore, self-efficacy moderated the relationship between the two factors.

CONCLUSION

Cultivating organizational climate and adversity quotients is an important strategy to improve the work engagement of intensive care unit nurses, particularly for nurses with high self-efficacy.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Administrators should make efforts to create a good organizational climate and cultivate nurses' adversity quotients and self-efficacy to decrease their intent to leave.

Re-Developing the Adversity Response Profile for Chinese University Students

Adversity response is fundamental to dealing with adversity. This paper reports the re-development and subsequent psychometric evaluation of the Adversity Response Profile for Chinese University Students (ARP-CUS). The data were collected from a Chinese university student sample (n = 474). Factor analysis and Rasch analysis were used to examine the psychometric properties of the ARP-CUS. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a six-factor model; then confirmatory factor analysis supported a five-factor solution. Rasch analysis provided further evidence of the psychometric quality of the instrument in terms of dimensionality, rating scale effectiveness, and item fit statistics for those six dimensions. The final version of the ARP-CUS contains 24 items across five subscales for assessing students’ responses to adversity, including control, attribution, reach, endurance, and transcendence. Overall, ARP-CUS demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties for quantifying the adversity quotient of Chinese university students.

Predictors of Health Behaviors Among Undergraduate Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Predictive Study

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health behaviors of university students. Thus, factors influencing students' health behaviors during the COVID-19 outbreak should be examined.

PURPOSE

To our knowledge, little is known about stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviors of university students in Thailand. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the relationships among socioeconomic factors, stress, and adversity quotient influencing university students' health behavior during the COVID-19 crisis.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional predictive study; it was included 416 undergraduate students ≥18 years of age at a university in Thailand. We used descriptive statistics, chi-squared test, and stepwise multiple linear regression for data analysis.

RESULTS

The results indicated that most participants were women (71.90%), and the highest proportion of students were enrolled in College of Politics and Governance (25.24%). Most of the students had a high stress level (M = 3.54, SD = 0.53), high adversity quotient (M = 3.77, SD = 0.63), and good health behavior (M = 3.06, SD = 0.53). Adversity quotient, stress, and current faculty/college were significant predictors of health behaviors of undergrad students (total variance: 37.2%).

CONCLUSION

Total adversity quotient was the strongest predictor of health behavior, followed by stress and current faculty/colleges. On the basis of our results, we suggested that faculty members, caretakers, and interdisciplinary care teams should consider adversity quotient and stress in developing activities to encourage and promote students' physical and mental health behaviors, particularly during the COVID-19.

Stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviors of undergraduate students in a Thai university during COVID-19 outbreak

Background

University students are an essential human resource for national development. Thus, it is important to study the stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviors of these students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective

This study aimed to identify stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviors and examine the relationship between these factors in undergraduate students during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Methods

The current study was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design conducted from 27 November to 10 December 2020. A total of 416 undergraduate students in a Thai university were selected using a convenience sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to collect the data on stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviors of undergraduate students during the COVID-19 outbreak. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.

Results

This study indicated that stress was at a high level (3.54 ± .53; Mean ± SD), adversity quotient was at a high level (3.77 ± .63; Mean ± SD), and health behaviors were at a moderate level (3.06 ± .53; Mean ± SD). The current study also found that stress and adversity quotient were irrelevant. Stress and health behaviors were negatively correlated with a level of significance of .01 (r = -.31), and adversity quotient and health behaviors were positively correlated with a level of significance of .01 (r = .051).

Conclusion

It is suggested that healthcare providers, families, and professors should consider stress and adversity quotient in developing interventions to promote healthy behaviors in terms of physical and psychological factors in university students.
