The Contribution of Bullying Involvement and Alexithymia to Somatic Complaints in Preadolescents

Somatic complaints during preadolescence are connected to individual and contextual factors, and extant research highlights the relevance of alexithymia and bullying involvement. In this cross-sectional study, we explored the joint and unique influence of bullying involvement-as perpetrators, victims, or outsiders-and alexithymia on somatic complaints in a sample of 179 Italian middle-school students (aged 11-15). Findings revealed an indirect association between bullying perpetration and victimization complaints through alexithymia. We also found a significant direct association between victimization and somatic complaints. No significant association between outsider behavior and somatization was found. Our results revealed that bullying perpetration and victimization could increase youths' risk for somatic complaints and clarify one of the processes underlying this association. The current findings further emphasize the relevance of emotional awareness for youths' well-being and propose that implementing social-emotional skills might prevent some of the adverse consequences of being involved in bullying episodes.

Exploring the Process of Policy Overreaction: The COVID-19 Lockdown Decisions

Policy overreaction is a common phenomenon, especially in complex and emergency situations where politicians are led to make decisions fast. In these emergency decisions, emotions run generally high and cognitive processes are often impaired. The conditions of policy overreaction are in place as emotions overwhelm decision makers' rational processes. Drawing on the response patterns of three countries to the COVID-19 pandemic, we develop a process model of policy overreaction which describes the effects of negative emotions and institutional isomorphism on policy decision-making. Our model highlights four critical stages: negative emotions buildup, propagation of fear, isomorphic decision-making, and leading to an intractable crisis. This article shows precisely how the cascading effect of negative emotions, particularly fear, is contagious and spreads to generate crowd effects, which bend considerably policy makers' ability to make rational decisions. Our theory provides a better understanding of the process by which policy overreaction takes place.

Positive Well-Being in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes During Early Adolescence

Developmental shifts during early adolescence relate to type 1 diabetes (T1D) self-management, increased risk of emotional distress, and worsening health status. Less is known about positive experiences related to T1D. This study evaluated associations of positive well-being (PWB) with diabetes burden, self-management, and glycemic control. Youth (N = 55, age = 12-13 years; X̄ age = 12.75 + 0.56 years, 50.9% male, 38.2% non-Caucasian) reported PWB, depressive symptoms, and diabetes burden. Parents reported on overall T1D adherence. Adherence behaviors and glycemic control were assessed objectively. Higher PWB correlated with lower depressive symptoms (r s = -.45), less diabetes burden (r s = -.48), and better glycemic control (r s = -.43), all p < .01. When controlling for diabetes duration, higher PWB correlated with lower depressive symptoms and better glycemic control. PWB was not related to demographics or adherence. Initial exploration suggests PWB is related to key diabetes constructs, and maybe valuable to consider along with efforts to support youth with T1D during a vulnerable developmental period.
