Design and Investigation of Superatoms for Redox Applications: First-Principles Studies

A superatom is a cluster of atoms that acts like a single atom. Two main groups of superatoms are superalkalis and superhalogens, which mimic the chemistry of alkali and halogen atoms, respectively. The ionization energies of superalkalis are smaller than those of alkalis (<3.89 eV for cesium atom), and the electron affinities of superhalogens are larger than that of halogens (>3.61 eV for chlorine atom). Exploring new superalkali/superhalogen aims to provide reliable data and predictions of the use of such compounds as redox agents in the reduction/oxidation of counterpart systems, as well as the role they can play more generally in materials science. The low ionization energies of superalkalis make them candidates for catalysts for CO2 conversion into renewable fuels and value-added chemicals. The large electron affinity of superhalogens makes them strong oxidizing agents for bonding and removing toxic molecules from the environment. By using the superatoms as building blocks of cluster-assembled materials, we can achieve the functional features of atom-based materials (like conductivity or catalytic potential) while having more flexibility to achieve higher performance. This feature paper covers the issues of designing such compounds and demonstrates how modifications of the superatoms (superhalogens and superalkalis) allow for the tuning of the electronic structure and might be used to create unique functional materials. The designed superatoms can form stable perovskites for solar cells, electrolytes for Li-ion batteries of electric vehicles, superatomic solids, and semiconducting materials. The designed superatoms and their redox potential evaluation could help experimentalists create new materials for use in fields such as energy storage and climate change.

First-Principles Study of B16N16 Cluster-Assembled Porous Nanomaterials

Owing to the similar valence electron structures between the B-N bond and the C-C bond, boron nitride, similar to carbon, can form abundant polymorphs with different frameworks, which possess rich mechanical and electronic properties. Using the hollow, cage-like B₁₆N₁₆ cluster as building blocks, here, we established three new BN polymorphs with low-density porous structures, termed Cub-B₁₆N₁₆, Tet-B₁₆N₁₆, and Ort-B₁₆N₁₆, which have cubic (P4¯3m), tetragonal (P4/nbm), and orthomorphic (Imma) symmetries, respectively. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the existence of porous structure Cub-B₁₆N₁₆, Tet-B₁₆N₁₆, and Ort-B₁₆N₁₆ were not only energetically, dynamically, thermally and mechanically stable, they were even more stable than some known phases, such as sc-B₁₂N₁₂ and Hp-BN. The obtained Pugh's ratio showed that the Cub-B₁₆N₁₆ and Tet-B₁₆N₁₆ structures were brittle materials, but Ort-B₁₆N₁₆ was ductile. The analysis of ideal strength, Young's moduli, and shear moduli revealed that the proposed new phases all exhibited sizable mechanical anisotropy. Additionally, the calculation of electronic band structures and density of states showed that they were all semiconducting with a wide, indirect band gap (~3 eV). The results obtained in this work not only identified three stable BN polymorphs, they also highlighted a bottom-up way to obtain the desired materials with the clusters serving as building blocks.

The Magic Au60 Nanocluster: A New Cluster-Assembled Material with Five Au13 Building Blocks

Herein, we report the synthesis and atomic structure of the cluster-assembled [Au60Se2(Ph3P)10(SeR)15](+) material. Five icosahedral Au13 building blocks from a closed gold ring with Au-Se-Au linkages. Interestingly, two Se atoms (without the phenyl tail) locate in the center of the cluster, stabilized by the Se-(Au)5 interactions. The ring-like nanocluster is unprecedented in previous experimental and theoretical studies of gold nanocluster structures. In addition, our optical and electrochemical studies show that the electronic properties of the icosahedral Au13 units still remain unchanged in the penta-twinned Au60 nanocluster, and this new material might be a promising in optical limiting material. This work offers a basis for deep understanding on controlling the cluster-assembled materials for tailoring their functionalities.

Al4H7(-) is a resilient building block for aluminum hydrogen cluster materials

The formation and oxygen etching of Al(n)H(m)(-) clusters are characterized in a flow reactor experiment with first-principles theoretical investigations to demonstrate the exceptional stability of Al(4)H(7)(-). The origin of the preponderance of Al(4)H(7)(-) in the mass spectra of hydrogenated aluminum anions and its resistance to O(2) etching are discussed. Al(4)H(7)(-) is shown to have the ability to bond with ionic partners to form stable hydrides through addition of an alkali atom [XAl(4)H(7) (X = Li-Cs)]. An intuitive model that can predict the existence of stable hydrogenated cluster species is proposed. The potential synthetic utility of the superatom assemblies built on these units is addressed.
