Abstract
Daptomycin use for gram-positive infections has increased. This cost minimization analysis aimed to determine cost and/or time savings of daptomycin over vancomycin. The estimated hospital cost savings was US$166.41 per patient, and pharmacist time saved of almost 20 minutes per patient. Daptomycin has the potential to save both time and money.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer diagnosis and treatment can substantially affect health and financial outcomes for patients and families. Research in health care delivery across the cancer control continuum includes diverse activities led by multiple government and private sector organizations. Assessing the economic drivers and influencing factors associated with costs across this continuum is challenging as organizations leading research efforts often do not have forums to share data, develop linkages, and explore collaborative opportunities. OBJECTIVE To describe the objectives, activities, and goals of the Interagency Consortium to Promote Health Economics Research on Cancer (HEROiC) to strengthen data resources and capacity for collaborative patient-focused cancer health economics research. MAIN ARGUMENT HEROiC's goals include assessing the economic burden of cancer; examining the effects of policies, health care setting/system factors, and health service delivery approaches across the cancer control continuum; and enhancing collaborations among researchers and organizations. CONCLUSIONS Data resources to study economic outcomes associated with cancer control are highly fragmented; HEROIC provides a forum to collaboratively develop, enhance, and utilize data resources and infrastructure for patient-centered cancer health economics research. This includes sharing data resources, developing linkages, identifying new data collection venues, and creating and supporting the dissemination of evidence-based information to diverse stakeholders. These efforts provide critical information to address the economic burden of cancer. RELEVANCE TO THE SPECIAL ISSUE Cancer diagnosis and treatment affect patient health and financial outcomes. This commentary describes how HEROiC will enhance research data infrastructure and collaborations to support patient-centered research with the goal of reducing the economic burden of cancer.

Abstract
Background Obesity is a frequent and significant risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE) among hospitalized adults. Pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis can help prevent VTE, but real-world effectiveness, safety, and costs among inpatients with obesity are unknown. Objective This study aims to compare clinical and economic outcomes among adult medical inpatients with obesity who received thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin or unfractionated heparin (UFH). Methods A retrospective cohort study was performed using the PINC AI™ Healthcare Database, which covers more than 850 hospitals in the United States. Patients included were ≥18 years old, had a primary or secondary discharge diagnosis of obesity [International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 diagnosis codes 278.01, 278.02, and 278.03; ICD-10 diagnosis codes E66.0x, E66.1, E66.2, E66.8, and E66.9], received ≥1 thromboprophylactic dose of enoxaparin (≤40 mg/day) or UFH (≤15,000 IU/day) during the index hospitalization, stayed ≥6 days in the hospital, and were discharged between 01 January 2010, and 30 September 2016. We excluded surgical patients, patients with pre-existing VTE, and those who received higher (treatment-level) doses or multiple types of anticoagulants. Multivariable regression models were constructed to compare enoxaparin with UFH based on the incidence of VTE, pulmonary embolism (PE)---------related mortality, overall in-hospital mortality, major bleeding, treatment costs, and total hospitalization costs during the index hospitalization and the 90 days after index discharge (readmission period). Results Among 67,193 inpatients who met the selection criteria, 44,367 (66%) and 22,826 (34%) received enoxaparin and UFH, respectively, during their index hospitalization. Demographic, visit-related, clinical, and hospital characteristics differed significantly between groups. Enoxaparin during index hospitalization was associated with 29%, 73%, 30%, and 39% decreases in the adjusted odds of VTE, PE-related mortality, in-hospital mortality, and major bleeding, respectively, compared with UFH (all p < 0.002). Compared with UFH, enoxaparin was associated with significantly lower total hospitalization costs during the index hospitalization and readmission periods. Conclusions Among adult inpatients with obesity, primary thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin compared with UFH was associated with significantly lower risks of in-hospital VTE, major bleeding, PE-related mortality, overall in-hospital mortality, and hospitalization costs.

Abstract
Introduction Robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) is an alternative to video-assessed thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for the treatment of lung cancer but concern exists regarding the high associated costs. The COVID-19 pandemic added further financial pressure to healthcare systems. This study investigated the impact of the learning curve on the cost-effectiveness of RATS lung resection and the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a RATS program. Methods Patients undergoing RATS lung resection between January 2017 and December 2020 were prospectively followed. A matched cohort of VATS cases were analyzed in parallel. The first 100 and most recent 100 RATS cases performed at our institution were compared to assess the learning curve. Cases performed before and after March 2020 were compared to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A comprehensive cost analysis of multiple theatre and postoperative data points was performed using Stata statistics package (v14.2). Results 365 RATS cases were included. Median cost per procedure was £7,167 and theatre cost accounted for 70%. Major contributing factors to overall cost were operative time and postoperative length of stay. Cost per case was £640 less after passing the learning curve (p < 0.001) largely due to reduced operative time. Comparison of a post-learning curve RATS subgroup matched to 101 VATS cases revealed no significant difference in theatre costs between the two techniques. Overall cost of RATS lung resections performed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were not significantly different. However, theatre costs were significantly cheaper (£620/case; p < 0.001) and postoperative costs were significantly more expensive (£1,221/case; p = 0.018) during the pandemic. Discussion Passing the learning curve is associated with a significant reduction in the theatre costs associated with RATS lung resection and is comparable with the cost of VATS. This study may underestimate the true cost benefit of passing the learning curve due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on theatre costs. The COVID-19 pandemic made RATS lung resection more expensive due to prolonged hospital stay and increased readmission rate. The present study offers some evidence that the initial increased costs associated with RATS lung resection may be gradually offset as a program progresses.

Abstract
Objective: The study aims to analyze the quality of studies that make economic evaluations for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Assessing the quality of studies can guide policy-making and planning. Methods: One of the most recognized checklists "The Consensus on Health Economic Criteria" (CHEC)-list designed by Evers et al. in 2005 aims to answer two important questions: is the methodology of the study appropriate, and are the results of the study valid? We reviewed studies focusing on ALS and its economic costs, and evaluated the studies with (CHEC)-list. Results: We examined 25 articles in terms of their cost evaluation and quality. It is seen that they mainly focus on medical costs, ignoring social care costs. When the quality of the studies is examined, it is seen that the studies overall achieve high scores in terms of their purpose and research question, but some of the studies score low in terms of ethical dimension, comprehensiveness of expenditure items, their application of sensitivity analyses and their study design. Conclusions: The main recommendation of our study for future cost evaluation studies is that they should focus on the questions in the checklist that are scored low overall by the 25 articles, and consider the social care costs as well as medical costs. Our recommendations when designing cost studies can be applied to other chronic diseases with long-term economic costs like ALS.

Abstract
Introduction Acute appendicitis is a frequent illness that manifests as an emergency and most of the cases necessitate surgical intervention. One of the most critical processes in a laparoscopic appendicectomy is the closure of the appendicular stump. For the closure of the stump of the appendix, several approaches have been employed and explored, but the one with the best outcomes has yet to be proved. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the medical results and cost analyses of laparoscopic appendicectomy with two of the commonly used stump closure techniques - ENDOLOOP® and Hem-o-lok®. Materials and methods A two-year prospective hospital-based cohort study was conducted from June 2019 to July 2021. All the patients in the study were randomly assigned to one of two experimental arms (ENDOLOOP® and Hem-o-lok®). The clinical and follow-up data of these patients were collected and tabulated into a data sheet and analyzed. Results In total, 180 individuals were included in the research (90 in each arm). No statistically significant difference was found in comparing the age, gender or diameter of the appendix among the two groups. The time taken for surgery showed significant differences among the two study groups. The time taken for the procedure in the Hem-o-lok® group was significantly lower than the ENDOLOOP® group (40.3 ± 12.3 minutes vs 50.83 ± 10.5 minutes, p < 0.001). No intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications were noted in either of the groups. The average duration of hospital stay was 2.7 ± 0.9 days in the Hem-o-lok® group, while it was 3.1 ± 0.8 days in the ENDOLOOP® group (p = 0.986). The material cost for the stump ligation with Hem-o-lok® was Rs. 310 ± Rs. 76 while that using ENDOLOOP® was Rs. 630 ± Rs. 118 (p < 0.001). In the Hem-o-lok® subset of patients, the mean direct expenses of laparoscopic appendicectomy were considerably lower. During the 12-week follow-up period, none of the patients had any post-operative complications. Conclusion According to the results of this study, both the technical variations of appendix stump closure are equal in terms of postoperative complications. When compared to the ENDOLOOP® group, the Hem-o-lok® group had a shorter duration of surgery and ended up spending less money. Hem-o-lok® clips have the potential to become the preferred way of anchoring the appendix base during laparoscopic appendicectomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the affordability of a healthy food basket (HFB) for welfare recipients and average income earners in 2019 and to compare trends from 2011. METHODS Fifty-seven food items' prices were collected from fifteen stores across five suburbs representing low, medium and high socio-economic status. Costs were compared with average weekly income and welfare payments to assess the baskets' affordability for a family of four and five. RESULTS In 2019, a HFB was affordable (below 30% of household income) for a five-person reference family with a pensioner, representing 24.8% of weekly welfare payments, but not for a four-person reference family (33.0%). The cost of the HFB increased slightly over time from AU$288.91 in 2011 to AU$291.79 in 2019. The food affordability improved for a family of five including a pensioner over this period due to an increase of average weekly earnings and welfare payments. CONCLUSION In 2019, the HFB was affordable for a five-person family; however, a four-person family receiving welfare benefits would have experienced significant "food stress," with the food basket costing above 30% of household income. IMPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH PROMOTION Inequity in the affordability of healthy food is a major public health concern and one that demands recognition and national action. The impact of policies affecting welfare support and wages needs to be considered, as well as food pricing strategies and possible food subsidies for those at greatest risk of food insecurity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To critically review researchers' use of diagnosis codes to identify congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection or disease in healthcare administrative databases. Understanding the limitations of cCMV ascertainment in those databases can inform cCMV surveillance and health services research. METHODS We identified published studies that used diagnosis codes for cCMV or CMV in hospital discharge or health insurance claims and encounters records for infants to assess prevalence, use of services, or healthcare costs. We reviewed estimates of prevalence and of charges, costs, or expenditures associated with cCMV diagnosis codes. RESULTS Five studies assessed hospitalizations with cCMV diagnosis codes recorded in hospital discharge databases, from the United States (n = 3), Australia (n = 1), and the United Kingdom (n = 1). Six other studies analyzed claims or encounters data from the United States (n = 5) or Japan (n = 1) to identify infants with cCMV codes. Prevalence estimates of recognized cCMV ranged from 0.6 to 3.8 per 10,000 infants. Economic analyses reported a wide range of per-hospitalization or per-infant cost estimates, which lacked standardization or comparability. CONCLUSIONS The administrative prevalence of cCMV cases reported in published analyses of administrative data from North America, Western Europe, Japan, and Australia (0.6-3.8 per 10,000 infants) is an order of magnitude lower than the estimates of the true birth prevalence of 3-7 per 1,000 newborns based on universal newborn screening pilot studies conducted in the same regions. Nonetheless, in the absence of systematic surveillance for cCMV, administrative data might be useful for assessing trends in testing and clinical diagnosis. To the extent that cCMV cases recorded in administrative databases are not representative of the full spectrum of cCMV infection or disease, per-child cost estimates generated from those data may not be generalizable. On the other hand, claims data may be useful for estimating patterns of healthcare use and expenditures associated with combinations of diagnoses for cCMV and known complications of cCMV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We assessed the cost-effectiveness and student outcomes related to providing breakfast in the classroom (BIC) setting versus breakfast in the traditional school cafeteria (Cafe). METHODS The sample included 2906 African American and Hispanic students attending urban elementary and middle schools in a city in the Northeastern United States. Teachers and other school personnel completed interviews. Teachers completed an online survey. RESULTS School absences were lower for students in the BIC program than in the Cafe program. The school suspension rate was lower for the BIC students than the Cafe students. A larger percentage of BIC students (80%) ate breakfast than Cafe students (30%). The BIC program was more cost-effective than the Cafe program. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that low-income students in the BIC program showed improved attendance and increased breakfast consumption. Students who consume a healthy in-class breakfast may develop better eating habits and academic performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to estimate annual direct cost attributed to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment from a patient's perspective using real-world patient follow-up data from hospitals' electronic database. METHODS A prospective 1-year study was conducted in rheumatology clinics of tertiary care hospitals of Karachi, Pakistan. Cost-of-illness methodology was used and all patient data related to costs of rheumatologist visits, physical therapy sessions, medications, assistive devices and laboratory investigations were obtained directly in printed hardcopies from patient electronic databases using their medical record numbers. Transportation cost was calculated from patient-reported log books. Data were analyzed through IBM SPSS version 23. Patients were asked to sign a written consent and the study was ethically approved. RESULTS The mean age of patients (N = 358) was 48 years. Most patients (73.7%) were female, married (86%) and had basic education (71.8%). Average cost of rheumatologist visits was PKR 11 510.61 (USD: 72.05) while it was PKR 66 947.37 (USD: 419.07) for physical therapy sessions. On average, medicines and medical devices costs were estimated at PKR 10 104.23 (USD: 63.25) and PKR 7848.48 (USD: 49.13) respectively. Cost attributed to diagnostic and laboratory charges was PKR 1962.12 (USD: 12.28) and travel expense was PKR 6541 (USD: 40.95). The direct expenditure associated with managing RA was PKR 37 558 (USD: 235.1). All costs were reported per annum. CONCLUSION Patient with RA in Pakistan pay a considerable amount of their income for managing their condition. Most patients have no provision for insurance which is a need considering the nature of the disease and associated productivity loss that would significantly lower income as the disease progresses.

Abstract
Background Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (nhl) is the most common hematologic malignancy. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (dlbcl) and follicular lymphoma (fl) constitute 55% of new nhl cases and are initially treated with rituximab-based chemoimmunotherapy. Relative to intravenous (IV) rituximab, a subcutaneous (sc) formulation approved in 2016 has comparable pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety, and a greatly reduced administration time; it is also preferred by patients. The objective of the present study was to estimate the effect (on systemic therapy suite time and on the costs of drug acquisition and administration) of implementing sc rituximab in the initial chemoimmunotherapy for fl and dlbcl over 3 years in the Canadian market. Methods An Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA, U.S.A.)-based model was created with a population size based on epidemiologic data and current rituximab use, duration of use considering initial therapy, time savings for sc rituximab administration from published studies, costs from standard Canadian sources, and assumed uptake in implementing provinces of 65%, 75%, and 80% over 3 years. Key parameters and sensitivity analysis values were validated by clinical experts located in various Canadian jurisdictions. Costs are reported in 2017 Canadian dollars from the perspective of the health care system. Results More than 3 years after implementation of sc rituximab, we estimated that 5762 Canadians would be receiving sc rituximab, resulting in savings of 128,715 hours in systemic therapy suite time and approximately $40 million in drug and administration costs. Sensitivity analyses suggest that the model is most sensitive to sc market uptake, number of induction therapy cycles, and eligible patients. Conclusions Subcutaneous administration of rituximab can significantly reduce systemic therapy suite time and achieve substantial savings in drug and administration costs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diagnostic assessment programs (daps) appear to improve the diagnosis of cancer, but evidence of their cost-effectiveness is lacking. Given that no earlier study used secondary financial data to estimate the cost of diagnostic tests in the province of Ontario, we explored how to use secondary financial data to retrieve the cost of key diagnostic test services in daps, and we tested the reliability of that cost-retrieving method with hospital-reported costs in preparation for future cost-effectiveness studies. METHODS We powered our sample at an alpha of 0.05, a power of 80%, and a margin of error of ±5%, and randomly selected a sample of eligible patients referred to a dap for suspected breast cancer during 1 January-31 December 2012. Confirmatory diagnostic tests received by each patient were identified in medical records. Canadian Classification of Health Intervention procedure codes were used to search the secondary financial data Web portal at the Ontario Case Costing Initiative for an estimate of the direct, indirect, and total costs of each test. The hospital-reported cost of each test received was obtained from the host-hospital's finance department. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the cost of individual or group confirmatory diagnostic tests, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test or the paired t-test was used to compare the Ontario Case Costing Initiative and hospital-reported costs. RESULTS For the 191 identified patients with suspected breast cancer, the estimated total cost of $72,195.50 was not significantly different from the hospital-reported total cost of $72,035.52 (p = 0.24). Costs differed significantly when multiple tests to confirm the diagnosis were completed during one patient visit and when confirmatory tests reported in hospital data and in medical records were discrepant. The additional estimated cost for non-salaried physicians delivering diagnostic services was $28,387.50. CONCLUSIONS It was feasible to use secondary financial data to retrieve the cost of key diagnostic tests in a breast cancer dap and to compare the reliability of the costs obtained by that estimation method with hospital-reported costs. We identified the strengths and challenges of each approach. Lessons learned from this study have to be taken into consideration in future cost-effectiveness studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Comparing relative costs for androgen deprivation therapy (adt) protocols in prostate cancer (pca) requires an examination of all health care resources, not only those specific to pca. The objective of the present study was to use administrative data to estimate total health care costs in a population-based cohort of pca patients. METHODS Patients in Ontario with pca who started 90 days or more of adt at age 66 years or older during 1995-2005 were selected from cancer registry and health care administrative databases. We classified patients (n = 21,818) by regimen (medical castration, orchiectomy, anti-androgen monotherapy, medical castration with anti-androgen, orchiectomy with anti-androgen) and indication (neoadjuvant, adjuvant, metastatic disease, biochemical recurrence, primary nonmetastatic). Using nonparametric regression methods, with inverse probability weighting to adjust for censoring, and bootstrapping, we computed mean 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year longitudinal total direct medical costs (2009 Canadian dollars). RESULTS Mean first-year costs were highest for metastatic disease, ranging from $24,400 for orchiectomy to $32,120 for anti-androgen monotherapy. Mean first-year costs for all other indications were less than $20,000. Mean 5-year and 10-year costs were lowest for neoadjuvant treatment: approximately $43,000 and $81,000 respectively, with differences of less than $4,000 between regimens. Annual costs were highest in the first year of adt. Orchiectomy was the least costly regimen for most time periods, but was limited to primary and metastatic indications. Outpatient drugs, including pharmacologic adt, accounted for 17%-65% of total first-year costs. CONCLUSIONS Compared with combined therapies, the adt monotherapies, particularly orchiectomy when clinically feasible, are more economical. Our methods exemplified the use of algorithms to elucidate clinical information from administrative data. Our approach can be adapted for other cancers to expand the range of studies using Canadian administrative data.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Costs for radiation therapy (rt) and the methods used to cost rt are highly diverse across the literature. To date, no study has compared various costing methods in detail. Our objective was to perform a thorough review of the radiation costing literature to identify sources of costs and methods used. METHODS A systematic review of Ovid medline, Ovid oldmedline, embase, Ovid HealthStar, and EconLit from 2005 to 23 March 2015 used search terms such as "radiation," "radiotherapy," "neoplasm," "cost," " cost analysis," and "cost benefit analysis" to locate relevant articles. Original papers were reviewed for detailed costing methods. Cost sources and methods were extracted for papers investigating rt modalities, including three-dimensional conformal rt (3D-crt), intensity-modulated rt (imrt), stereotactic body rt (sbrt), and brachytherapy (bt). All costs were translated into 2014 U.S. dollars. RESULTS Most of the studies (91%) reported in the 33 articles retrieved provided rt costs from the health system perspective. The cost of rt ranged from US$2,687.87 to US$111,900.60 per treatment for imrt, followed by US$5,583.28 to US$90,055 for 3D-crt, US$10,544.22 to US$78,667.40 for bt, and US$6,520.58 to US$19,602.68 for sbrt. Cost drivers were professional or personnel costs and the cost of rt treatment. Most studies did not address the cost of rt equipment (85%) and institutional or facility costs (66%). CONCLUSIONS Costing methods and sources were widely variable across studies, highlighting the need for consistency in the reporting of rt costs. More work to promote comparability and consistency across studies is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiotherapy is a common treatment for many cancers, but up-to-date estimates of the costs of radiotherapy are lacking. In the present study, we estimated the unit costs of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (imrt) and 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-crt) in Ontario. METHODS An activity-based costing model was developed to estimate the costs of imrt and 3D-crt in prostate cancer. It included the costs of equipment, staff, and supporting infrastructure. The framework was subsequently adapted to estimate the costs of radiotherapy in breast cancer and head-and-neck cancer. We also tested various scenarios by varying the program maturity and the use of volumetric modulated arc therapy (vmat) alongside imrt. RESULTS From the perspective of the health care system, treating prostate cancer with imrt and 3D-crt respectively cost $12,834 and $12,453 per patient. The cost of radiotherapy ranged from $5,270 to $14,155 and was sensitive to analytic perspective, radiation technique, and disease site. Cases of head-and-neck cancer were the most costly, being driven by treatment complexity and fractions per treatment. Although imrt was more costly than 3D-crt, its cost will likely decline over time as programs mature and vmat is incorporated. CONCLUSIONS Our costing model can be modified to estimate the costs of 3D-crt and imrt for various disease sites and settings. The results demonstrate the important role of capital costs in studies of radiotherapy cost from a health system perspective, which our model can accommodate. In addition, our study established the need for future analyses of imrt cost to consider how vmat affects time consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc) and the complexity of its diagnosis and treatment are increasing. We estimated trends in net health care utilization, costs of care attributable to hcc in Ontario, and rate ratios of resource use at various stages of care. METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study identified hcc patients and non-cancer control subjects, and health care resource utilization between 2002 and 2009. Generalized estimating equations were then used to estimate net health care utilization (hcc patients vs. the matched control subjects) and net costs of care attributable to hcc. Generalized linear models were used to analyze rate ratios of resource use. RESULTS We identified 2832 hcc patients and 2808 matched control subjects. In comparison with the control subjects, hcc patients generally used a greater number of health care services. Overall, the mean net cost of care per 30 patient-days (2013 Canadian dollars) attributable to outpatient visits and hospitalizations was highest in the pre-diagnosis (1 year before diagnosis), initial (1st year after diagnosis), and end-of-life (last 6 months before death, short-term survivors) phases. Mean net homecare costs were highest in the end-of-life phase (long-term survivors). In the end-of-life phase (short-term survivors), mean net costs attributable to outpatient visits and total services significantly increased to $14,220 from $1,547 and to $33,121 from $14,450 (2008-2009 and 2002-2003 respectively). CONCLUSIONS In hcc, our study found increasing resource use and net costs of care, particularly in the end-of-life phase among short-term survivors. Our findings offer a basis for resource allocation decisions in the area of cancer prevention and control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) are widely used in Europe. They allow performing comparisons in hospitals and incurrent hospital payment systems, defining the payment categories. We undertook this study to classify children who underwent appendectomy according to DRGs. METHODS Cross-sectional study. Comorbidities, length of hospitalization, histopathologic classification, and DRG classifications were analyzed. RESULTS We included 313 patients, 62% males, with an average age of 8 ± 3 years; 91% were referred by another hospital and 67% were treated at night. Average length of hospitalization was 4 ± 3 days. There were comorbidities in 8% and surgical complications in 11%. According to histopathology, appendicitis was edematous (11%), suppurative (36%), gangrenous (22%), perforated (29%), and abscessed (2%). At discharge, 97% of the patients were healthy. Total cost for DRG 343 was $10,470,173.00 (Mexican pesos), DRG 342 was $1,227,592.00 and DRG 340 was $511,521.00. The global amount was $12,209,286.00 (Mexican pesos). CONCLUSION The unitary cost for treatment of appendectomy for DRG 343 was $37,935.00, for DRG 342 was $49,103.00 and for DRG 340 was $42,626.00 (Mexican pesos). Because 88% of the cases of appendicitis were uncomplicated, this amount of money could be spent to treat these patients in a second-level hospital, using reimbursement 343 without generating additional expenses.

Abstract
There is a new merging of health economics and nutrition disciplines to assess the impact of diet on health and disease prevention and to characterise the health and economic aspects of specific changes in nutritional behaviour and nutrition recommendations. A rationale exists for developing the field of nutrition economics which could offer a better understanding of both nutrition, in the context of having a significant influence on health outcomes, and economics, in order to estimate the absolute and relative monetary impact of health measures. For this purpose, an expert meeting assessed questions aimed at clarifying the scope and identifying the key issues that should be taken into consideration in developing nutrition economics as a discipline that could potentially address important questions. We propose a first multidisciplinary outline for understanding the principles and particular characteristics of this emerging field. We summarise here the concepts and the observations of workshop participants and propose a basic setting for nutrition economics and health outcomes research as a novel discipline to support nutrition, health economics and health policy development in an evidence and health-benefit-based manner.
