Amorphous As2S3 Doped with Transition Metals: An Ab Initio Study of Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties

Crystalline transition-metal chalcogenides are the focus of solid state research. At the same time, very little is known about amorphous chalcogenides doped with transition metals. To close this gap, we have studied, using first principle simulations, the effect of doping the typical chalcogenide glass As₂S₃ with transition metals (Mo, W and V). While the undoped glass is a semiconductor with a density functional theory gap of about 1 eV, doping results in the formation of a finite density of states (semiconductor-to-metal transformation) at the Fermi level accompanied by an appearance of magnetic properties, the magnetic character depending on the nature of the dopant. Whilst the magnetic response is mainly associated with d-orbitals of the transition metal dopants, partial densities of spin-up and spin-down states associated with arsenic and sulphur also become slightly asymmetric. Our results demonstrate that chalcogenide glasses doped with transition metals may become a technologically important material.

Porous BN Nanofibers Enable Long-Cycling Life Sodium Metal Batteries

Sodium metal anode, featuring high capacity, low voltage and earth abundance, is desirable for building advanced sodium-metal batteries. However, Na-ion deposition typically leads to morphological instability and notorious chemical reactivity between sodium and common electrolytes still limit its practical application. In this study, a porous BN nanofibers modified sodium metal (BN/Na) electrode is introduced for enhancing Na-ion deposition dynamics and stability. As a result, symmetrical BN/Na cells enable an impressive rate capability and markedly enhanced cycling durability over 600 h at 10 mA cm^-2 . Density functional theory simulations demonstrate BN could effectively improve Na-ion adsorption and diffusion kinetics simultaneously. Finite element simulation clearly reveals the intrinsic smoothing effect of BN upon multiple Na-ion plating/stripping cycles. Coupled with a Na₃ V₂ O₂ (PO₄ )₂ F/Ti₃ C₂ X cathode, sodium metal full cells offer an ultrastable capacity of 125/63 mA h g^-1 (≈420/240 Wh kg^-1 ) at 0.05/5 C rate over 500 cycles. These comprehensive analyses demonstrate the feasibility of BN/Na anode for the establishment of high-energy-density sodium-metal full batteries.

Mechanistic investigations on Pinnick oxidation: a density functional theory study

A computational study on Pinnick oxidation of aldehydes into carboxylic acids using density functional theory (DFT) calculations has been evaluated with the (SMD)-M06-2X/aug-pVDZ level of theory, leading to an important understanding of the reaction mechanism that agrees with the experimental observations and explaining the substantial role of acid in driving the reaction. The DFT results elucidated that the first reaction step (FRS) proceeds in a manner where chlorous acid reacts with the aldehyde group through a distorted six-membered ring transition state to give a hydroxyallyl chlorite intermediate that undergoes a pericyclic fragmentation to release the carboxylic acid as a second reaction step (SRS). 1H NMR experiments and simulations showed that hydrogen bonding between carbonyl and t-butanol is unlikely to occur. Additionally, it was found that the FRS is a rate-determining and thermoneutral step, whereas SRS is highly exergonic with a low energetic barrier due to the Cl(III) → Cl(II) reduction. Frontier molecular orbital analysis, intrinsic reaction coordinate, molecular dynamics and distortion/interaction analysis further supported the proposed mechanism.

Template-Assisted in Situ Synthesis of Ag@Au Bimetallic Nanostructures Employing Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy

Noble metal nanostructure synthesis via seed-mediated route is a widely adopted strategy for a plethora of nanocrystal systems. Ag@Au core-shell nanostructures are radiolytically grown in real-time using in situ liquid-cell (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. Here we employ a capping agent, dimethyl-amine (DMA) and a coordinating complex, potassium iodide (KI) in an organic solvent (methanol) in order to (1) slow down the reaction kinetics to observe mechanistic insights into the overgrowth process and (2) shift the growth regime from galvanic-replacement mode to direct synthesis mode resulting in the conventional synthesis of Ag@Au core-shell structures. A theoretical approach based on classical simulations complements our experiments, providing further insight on the growth modes. In particular, we focus on the shape evolution and chemical ordering, as currently there is an insufficient understanding regarding mixed composition phases at interfaces of alloys even with well-known miscibilities. Furthermore, the comparison of theoretical and experimental data reveals that the final morphology of these nanoalloys is not simply a function of crystallinity of the underlying seed structure but instead is readily modified by extrinsic parameters such as additives, capping agent, and modulation of surface energies of exposed crystal surfaces by the encapsulating solvent. The impact of these additional parameters is systematically investigated using an empirical approach in light of ab initio simulations.
