Exploring the Social Trend Indications of Utilizing E-Commerce during and after COVID-19's Hit

COVID-19 is a major global crisis affecter, changing global norms and societal behavioral models. Many companies have faced existential crises, but on the other hand, businesses that were and are helping others to boost digitalization, ICT and software solutions deployment, remote communications integration, e-commerce & e-services, and so on, have boosted their businesses, as people shifted online during the global lockdown and international travel restrictions. Our work explores the trend of e-commerce and e-services utilization during the ease of restrictions and the social distancing period to forecast the trend continuation patterns after the pandemic. An online survey was conducted and targeted individuals in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, resulting in 155 participants. The data were analyzed from four perspectives: demographics, COVID-19 health impact, trend analysis, and regression analysis. The results indicate heavy utilization of e-commerce and e-services during the global movement restrictions and travel bans. This trend has, however, significantly reduced during the ease of restrictions and social distancing period. Utilizing e-commerce and e-services in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, based on the research data, is positively correlated to the outbreak conditions. On the other hand, current data still does not give clear indications, and this pattern is going to be mostly, partly, or not at all permanent now as societies are returning to mostly a free movement of people and marginally restricted social distancing times.

User-Adapted Web Services by Extending the eIDAS Specification with Functional Attributes

To provide web services adapted to the users’ functional capabilities, diversity must be considered from the conceptualization and design phases of the services’ development. In previous work, we proposed a model that allows the provisioning of adapted interfaces based on users’ identity and their functional attributes to facilitate this task for software designers and developers. However, these identities and attributes are self-declared by the users, which may impact reliability and usability. In this work, we propose an extension of our model to resolve these deficiencies by delegating the identity and attributes’ provision to external certified entities. The European electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services (eIDAS) regulation established a solution to ensure the cross-border mutual recognition of Electronic Identification (eID) mechanisms among the European Member States. This research aims to provide an extension of this regulation mentioned above (eIDAS) to support functional attributes and connect our previously proposed model to this extended eIDAS network. Thanks to this proposal, web services can guarantee adapted and personalized interfaces while improving the functionalities offered without any previous configuration by users and, in a reliable way, since the functional attributes belong to the users’ official eID. As the attribute set provided by eIDAS nodes only contains citizens’ personal and legal ones, we also propose a mechanism to connect the eIDAS network to external attribute providers that could extend the eIDAS profile of users with their functional attributes. We deployed a pilot to validate the proposed model consisting of an identity provider, an eIDAS node supporting the extended reference code, and an attribute provider supporting functional attributes. We also designed and implemented a simple service that supports eID authentication and serves adapted interfaces based on the retrieved extended eIDAS profile. Finally, we developed an experience for getting feedback from a set of real users with different functional capabilities. According to the results, we concluded that the generalized adoption of the proposed solution in the European digital web services will significantly improve their accessibility in terms of ease of use and adaptability to users’ capacities.

e-Banking Adoption: An Opportunity for Customer Value Co-creation

The development of information and communication technologies offers innovative opportunities to establish business strategies focused on customer value co-creation. This situation is especially notable in the banking industry. e-Banking activities can support competitive advantages. However, the adoption of e-banking is not yet well-established among consumers. In this sense, the technology acceptance model (TAM) is considered essential in studying consumer behavior applied to adopt a particular technology. According to the TAM model, this study analyses the factors which influence bank customers to adopt e-banking to facilitate their banking services and support the process of value co-creation. Consequently, the authors examine five main aspects of the technology adoption model to provide a broad understanding of bank customers’ consumption of e-banking. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis is conducted to evaluate proposed relationships between factors and customers’ e-banking adoption.

Development of e-service virtual museum tours in Poland during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Dynamically developing ICT technologies have become a tool to accelerate the creation of information societies around the world. Thanks to it, many traditional services have found a new digital space to function and thus achieve a global dimension. One example can be virtual museums, which provide access to their resources for every interested person having Internet connection. There is no doubt that the most spectacular and effective representation of digital museums are virtual walks, bringing, apart from cognitive aspects and good entertainment. In the era of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and international quarantine which limits mobility, e-services gave humanity the opportunity and a substitute for normal existence. The interest in e-services has increased, which has been directly translated into increased informational awareness. Favourable conditions as well as relatively low costs and technical complexity of creating virtual walks have led the authors to adopt the following hypothesis: during the period of the quarantine caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, museums are actively and dynamically developing virtual walks services. In the presented article, on the basis of research and analysis, the authors will test the hypothesis, as well as asses the level of virtual walks around monuments and museum centres in Poland.

Experiences from regional public funding agencies

Introduction

There is an increasing demand of social and health services by persons with long-term care (LTC) needs. On the other hand the devolution process has shifted governance and funding to regional agencies in many EU countries. Regional agencies are getting an increasing role in funding LTC. Knowledge transfer (KT) plays a key role in the development of regional funding agencies, as they should cooperate with both local and national agencies as well as several European organisations and companies operating in their regions. The communication barriers between social and health services play a particular role at regional level.

Description of care or policy practice

In Spain the 17 regions have full government autonomy in health and social care. These regions have developed different approaches to coordination of care and KT. Andalusia is the larger region in Spain. In order to coordinate provision and planning, the regional government has developed a network of cross-sectional agencies in specific areas such as Mental Health (FAISEM), Social Services in Ageing, Disabilities, Poverty and TICs (FASS), Emergency care (EPES), care related to gender (Instituto Andaluz de la Mujer), Health Care for the Elderly in the community (Living Lab and IAVANTE Foundation) or innovation in new technologies applied to social care (I2BC); among several others. A number of these public organisations are privately run.

Discussion

Coordination and links across these organisations as well as funding issues are discussed here. The relationship or coordination agencies with citizens and other stakeholders deserve special attention as well. Andalusia provides an interesting case of cross-sectorial coordination within the European context.
