Membrane-Current Collector-Based Flow-Electrode Capacitive Deionization System: A Novel Stack Configuration for Scale-Up Desalination

The stack configuration in flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) has been verified to be an attractive and feasible strategy for scaling up the desalination process. However, challenges still exist when attempting to simultaneously improve the desalination scale and the cell configuration. Here, we describe a novel stack FCDI configuration (termed a gradient FCDI system) based on a membrane-current collector assembly, in which the charge neutralization enables the in situ regeneration of the flow electrodes in the single cycle operation, thereby realizing a considerable increase in the desalinating performance. By evaluating standardized metrics such as the salt rejection, productivity (P), average salt removal rate (ASRR), energy-normalized removed salt (ENRS), and TEE, the results indicated that the gradient FCDI system could be a performance-stable and energy-efficient alternative for scale-up desalination. Under optimal operating conditions (carbon content = 10 wt %, feed salinity = 3000 mg L^-1, cell voltage = 1.2 V, and productivity = 56.7 L m^-2 h^-1), the robust desalination performance (ASRR = 1.07 μmol cm^-2 min^-1) and energy consumption (ENRS = 7.8 μmol J^-1) of the FCDI system with a desalination unit number of four were verified at long-term operation. In summary, the stacked gradient FCDI system and its operation mode described here may be an innovative and promising strategy capable of enlarging the scale of desalination while realizing performance improvement and device simplification.

Label-Free and Regenerative Electrochemical Microfluidic Biosensors for Continual Monitoring of Cell Secretomes

Development of an efficient sensing platform capable of continual monitoring of biomarkers is needed to assess the functionality of the in vitro organoids and to evaluate their biological responses toward pharmaceutical compounds or chemical species over extended periods of time. Here, a novel label-free microfluidic electrochemical (EC) biosensor with a unique built-in on-chip regeneration capability for continual measurement of cell-secreted soluble biomarkers from an organoid culture in a fully automated manner without attenuating the sensor sensitivity is reported. The microfluidic EC biosensors are integrated with a human liver-on-a-chip platform for continual monitoring of the metabolic activity of the organoids by measuring the levels of secreted biomarkers for up to 7 d, where the metabolic activity of the organoids is altered by a systemically applied drug. The variations in the biomarker levels are successfully measured by the microfluidic regenerative EC biosensors and agree well with cellular viability and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analyses, validating the accuracy of the unique sensing platform. It is believed that this versatile and robust microfluidic EC biosensor that is capable of automated and continual detection of soluble biomarkers will find widespread use for long-term monitoring of human organoids during drug toxicity studies or efficacy assessments of in vitro platforms.

Removal of estrogens by electrochemical oxidation process

Treatments of estrogens such as Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2) and Ethinylestradiol (EE2) were conducted using an electrolytic reactor equipped with multi-packed granular glassy carbon electrodes. Experimental results showed that E1, E2 and EE2 were oxidized in the range of 0.45-0.85 V and were removed through electro-polymerization. Observed data from continuous experiments were in good agreement with calculated results by a mathematical model constructed based on mass transfer limitation. In continuous treatment of trace estrogens (1 μg/L), 98% of E1, E2 and EE2 were stably removed. At high loading rate (100 μg/L), removal efficiency of E1 was kept around 74%-88% for 21 days, but removal efficiency reduced due to passivation of electrodes. However, removal efficiency was recovered after electrochemical regeneration of electrodes in presence of ozone. Electric energy consumption was observed in the range of 1-2 Wh/m(3). From these results, we concluded that the present electrochemical process would be an alternative removal of estrogens.
