Generation of PVP Membranes Using Extracts/Phenolic Fraction of Dysphania ambrosioides, Opuntia ficus-indica, and Tradescantia pallida

In the present work, electrospun membranes of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers were manufactured using extracts and phenolic fractions of Dysphania ambrosioides (epazote), Opuntia ficus-indica (nopal), and Tradescantia pallida (chicken grass). The characterization of the membranes was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The membranes synthesized through the use of the extracts generally showed a slight decrease in the diameter of the fibers but an increase in the size of the pores due to the presence of nanoparticles (rosaries) on the surface of the fibers, while the membranes synthesized using the phenolic fraction demonstrated an inversely proportional relationship between the compounds of this family with the diameter of the fibers and the size of the pore, allowing to elucidate part of the polymerization mechanisms of PVP nanofibers, in addition to proposing a reaction mechanism in the interaction between PVP and phenolic compounds for surface functionalization. Likewise, we demonstrate that the generation of reaction seeds through functionalization allows the addition of other compounds to the fibers in the membranes synthesized using the complete extract.

Recent Advances in Functionalized Electrospun Membranes for Periodontal Regeneration

Periodontitis is a global, multifaceted, chronic inflammatory disease caused by bacterial microorganisms and an exaggerated host immune response that not only leads to the destruction of the periodontal apparatus but may also aggravate or promote the development of other systemic diseases. The periodontium is composed of four different tissues (alveolar bone, cementum, gingiva, and periodontal ligament) and various non-surgical and surgical therapies have been used to restore its normal function. However, due to the etiology of the disease and the heterogeneous nature of the periodontium components, complete regeneration is still a challenge. In this context, guided tissue/bone regeneration strategies in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have gained more and more interest, having as a goal the complete restoration of the periodontium and its functions. In particular, the use of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds has emerged as an effective strategy to achieve this goal due to their ability to mimic the extracellular matrix and simultaneously exert antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and regenerative activities. This review provides an overview of periodontal regeneration using electrospun membranes, highlighting the use of these nanofibrous scaffolds as delivery systems for bioactive molecules and drugs and their functionalization to promote periodontal regeneration.

Platinum Nanoparticles Immobilized on Electrospun Membranes for Catalytic Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds

Structured catalytic membranes with high porosity and a low pressure drop are particularly suitable for industrial processes carried out at high space velocities. One of these processes is the catalytic total oxidation of volatile organic compounds, which is an economically feasible and environmentally friendly way of emission abatement. Noble metal catalysts are typically preferred due to high activity and stability. In this paper, the preparation of a thermally stable polybenzimidazole electrospun membrane, which can be used as a support for a platinum catalyst applicable in the total oxidation of volatile organic compounds, is reported for the first time. In contrast to commercial pelletized catalysts, high porosity of the membrane allowed for easy accessibility of the platinum active sites to the reactants and the catalytic bed exhibited a low pressure drop. We have shown that the preparation conditions can be tuned in order to obtain catalysts with a desired platinum particle size. In the gas-phase oxidation of ethanol, acetone, and toluene, the catalysts with Pt particle sizes 2.1 nm and 26 nm exhibited a lower catalytic activity than that with a Pt particle size of 12 nm. Catalysts with a Pt particle size of 2.1 nm and 12 nm were prepared by equilibrium adsorption, and the higher catalytic activity of the latter catalyst was ascribed to more reactive adsorbed oxygen species on larger Pt nanoparticles. On the other hand, the catalyst with a Pt particle size of 26 nm was prepared by a solvent evaporation method and contained less active polycrystalline platinum. Last but not least, the catalyst containing only 0.08 wt.% of platinum achieved high conversion (90%) of all the model volatile organic compounds at moderate temperatures (lower than 335 °C), which is important for reducing the costs of the abatement technology.

A Review of the Release Profiles and Efficacies of Chemotherapy Drug-Loaded Electrospun Membranes

Electrospun fibrous membranes loaded with chemotherapy drugs have been broadly studied, many of which have had promising data demonstrating therapeutic effects on cancer cell inhibition, tumor size reduction, the life extension of tumor-bearing animals, and more. Nevertheless, their drug release profiles are difficult to predict since their degradation pattern varies with crystalline polymers. In addition, there is room for improving their release performances, optimizing the release patterns, and achieving better therapeutic outcomes. In this review, the key factors affecting electrospun membrane drug release profiles have been systematically reviewed. Case studies of the release profiles of typical chemotherapy drugs are carried out to determine the preferred polymer choices and techniques to achieve the expected prolonged or enhanced release profiles. The therapeutic effects of these electrospun, chemo-drug-loaded membranes are also discussed. This review aims to assist in the design of future drug-loaded electrospun materials to achieve preferred release profiles with enhanced therapeutic efficacies.

Electrochemical and Electroconductive Behavior of Silk Fibroin Electrospun Membrane Coated with Gold or Silver Nanoparticles

The surface modification of materials obtained from natural polymers, such as silk fibroin with metal nanoparticles that exhibit intrinsic electrical characteristics, allows the obtaining of biocomposite materials capable of favoring the propagation and conduction of electrical impulses, acting as communicating structures in electrically isolated areas. On that basis, this investigation determined the electrochemical and electroconductive behavior through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of a silk fibroin electrospun membrane from silk fibrous waste functionalized with gold or silver nanoparticles synthetized by green chemical reduction methodologies. Based on the results obtained, we found that silk fibroin from silk fibrous waste (SF_w) favored the formation of gold (AuNPs-SF_w) and silver (AgNPs-SF_w) nanoparticles, acting as a reducing agent and surfactant, forming a micellar structure around the individual nanoparticle. Moreover, different electrospinning conditions influenced the morphological properties of the fibers, in the presence or absence of beads and the amount of sample collected. Furthermore, treated SF_w electrospun membranes, functionalized with AuNPs-SF_w or AgNPS-SF_w, allowed the conduction of electrical stimuli, acting as stimulators and modulators of electric current.

Bipolar Metal Flexible Electrospun Fibrous Membrane Based on Metal-Organic Framework for Gradient Healing of Tendon-to-Bone Interface Regeneration

Metal ions play a significant role in tissue repair, with widely application in clinical treatment. However, the therapeutic effect of metal ions is always limited due to metabolization and narrow repair capability. Here, a bipolar metal flexible electrospun fibrous membrane based on a metal-organic framework (MOF), which is bioinspired by the gradient structure of the tendon-to-bone interface, with a combination of regulating osteoblasts differentiation and angiogenesis properties, is constructed successfully by a continuous electrospinning technique and matching the longitudinal space morphology for synchronous regeneration. Furthermore, the MOF, acting as carriers, can not only achieve the sustainable release of metal ions, but promote the osteogenesis and tenogenesis on the scaffold. The in vitro data show that this novel hierarchical structure can accelerate the tenogenesis, the biomineralization, and angiogenesis. Moreover, in the in vivo experiment, the flexible fibrous membrane can promote tendon and bone tissue repair, and fibrocartilage reconstruction, to realize the multiple tissue synchronous regeneration at the damaged tendon-to-bone interface. Altogether, this newly developed bipolar metal flexible electrospun fibrous membrane based on a MOF, as a new biomimetic flexible scaffold, has great potential in reconstruct the tissue damage, especially gradient tissue damage.

Electrospun Asymmetric Membranes as Promising Wound Dressings: A Review

Despite all the efforts that have been done up to now, the currently available wound dressings are still unable to fully re-establish all the structural and functional properties of the native skin. To overcome this situation, researchers from the tissue engineering area have been developing new wound dressings (hydrogels, films, sponges, membranes) aiming to mimic all the features of native skin. Among them, asymmetric membranes emerged as a promising solution since they reproduce both epidermal and dermal skin layers. Wet or dry/wet phase inversion, scCO2-assisted phase inversion, and electrospinning have been the most used techniques to produce such a type of membranes. Among them, the electrospinning technique, due to its versatility, allows the development of multifunctional dressings, using natural and/or synthetic polymers, which resemble the extracellular matrix of native skin as well as address the specific requirements of each skin layer. Moreover, various therapeutic or antimicrobial agents have been loaded within nanofibers to further improve the wound healing performance of these membranes. This review article provides an overview of the application of asymmetric electrospun membranes as wound dressings displaying antibacterial activity and as delivery systems of biomolecules that act as wound healing enhancers.

The Development of Solvent Cast Films or Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes Made from Blended Poly Vinyl Alcohol Materials with Different Degrees of Hydrolyzation for Optimal Hydrogel Dissolution and Sustained Release of Anti-Infective Silver Salts

Introduction: We previously described the manufacture and characterization of hydrogel forming, thin film, anti-infective wound dressings made from Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) and silver nanoparticles, crosslinked by heat. However, these films were designed to be inexpensive for simple manufacture locally in Africa. In this new study, we have further developed PVA dressings by manufacturing films or electrospun membranes, made from blends of PVA with different degrees of hydrolyzation, that contain silver salts and degrade in a controlled manner to release silver in a sustained manner over 12 days. Methods: Films were solvent cast as films or electrospun into nanofibre membranes using blends of 99 and 88% hydrolyzed PVA, containing 1% w/w silver sulphadiazine, carbonate, sulphate, or acetate salts. Dissolution was measured as weight loss in water and silver release was measured using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. Results: Cast films generally stayed intact at PVA 99: PVA 88% ratios greater than 40:60 whereas electrospun membranes needed ratios greater than 10:90. Films (40:60 blend ratio) and membranes (10:90) all released silver salts in a sustained fashion but incompletely and to different extents. Electrospun membranes gave more linear release patterns in the 2–12 day period and all salts released well. Conclusion: Blended PVA cast films offer improved control over hydrogel dissolution and silver release without the need for high temperature crosslinking. Blended PVA electrospun membranes further improve membrane dissolution control and silver release profiles. These blended PVA films and membranes offer improved inexpensive systems for the manufacture of long lasting anti-infective hydrogel wound dressings.

Tailoring Electrospun Poly(l-lactic acid) Nanofibers as Substrates for Microfluidic Applications

Novel microfluidic substrates based on electrospun poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) membranes were developed to increase the limited range of commercially available paper substrates, commonly used for the fabrication of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices. PLLA's advantageous properties include biodegradability, biocompatibility, ease of being processed in various tailored morphologies, and cost effectiveness, among others. Oriented and nonoriented electrospun PLLA membranes were fabricated using electrospinning and the influence of fiber orientation, addition of hydrophilic additives, and plasma treatments on the morphology, physicochemical properties, and capillary flow rates were evaluated and compared with the commercial Whatman paper. In addition, a proof-of-concept application based on the colorimetric detection of glucose in printed PLLA and paper-based microfluidic systems was also performed. The results show the potential of PLLA substrates for the fabrication of portable, disposable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective microfluidic systems with controllable properties that can be tailored according to specific biotechnological application requirements, being a suitable alternative to conventional paper-based substrates.

Fibrous Nanozyme Dressings with Catalase-Like Activity for H2O2 Reduction To Promote Wound Healing

The concentrations of the redox pair hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and oxygen (O₂) can promote or decelerate the progression and duration of the wound healing process. Although H₂O₂ can reach critically high concentrations and prohibit healing, a sufficient O₂ inflow to the wound is commonly desired. Herein, we describe the fabrication and use of a membrane that can contemptuously decrease H₂O₂ and increase O₂ levels. Therefore, hematite nanozyme particles were integrated into electrospun and cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes. Within the dual-compound membrane, the polymeric mesh provides a porous scaffold with high water permeability and the nanozymes act as a catalyst with catalase-like activity that can efficiently convert H₂O₂ into O₂, as shown by a catalase assay. When comparing the growth of fibroblasts at an H₂O₂ concentration of 50 μM, the growth was largely enhanced when applying the nanozyme dressing. Thus, application of the nanozyme dressing can significantly reduce the harmful effect of higher H₂O₂ concentrations. The described catalytic membranes could be used in the future to provide an improved environment for cell proliferation in wounds and thus applied as advanced wound healing dressings.
