An integrated active biochar filter and capacitive deionization system for high-performance removal of arsenic from groundwater

An integrated process of filtration and electrosorption was first applied to enable high-performance arsenic removal for groundwater remediation. An active manganese dioxide-rice husk biochar composite (active BC) filter was utilized for oxidization of As(III) to As(V) and initial removal of As(III, V). Subsequently, electrosorption by capacitive deionization (CDI) was applied as a posttreatment to improve arsenic removal. The active BC approach exhibited fast removal rates of 0.75 and 0.63 g mg^-1 h^-1 and high maximum removal capacities of 40.76 and 48.15 mg g^-1 for As(III) and As(V), respectively. Importantly, column experiments demonstrated that the arsenic removal capacity in the active BC filter was 2.88 mg g^-1, which was 72 times higher than that of BC. The results were due to the high efficiency (94%) of redox transformation of As(III) to As(V). The electrosorptive removal of arsenic was further controlled by changing the voltage in CDI. With a charging step of 1.2 V, the total arsenic concentration can be reduced to 0.001 mg L^-1 with a low energy consumption of 0.0066 kW h m^-3. Furthermore, the integrated system can remove As from real groundwater to achieve the World Health Organization guideline value for drinking water quality.

Pertechnetate/Perrhenate Surface Complexation on Bamboo Engineered Biochar

The work deals with the evaluation of biochar samples prepared from Phyllostachys Viridiglaucescens bamboo. This evaluation consists of the characterization of prepared materials' structural properties, batch and dynamic sorption experiments, and potentiometric titrations. The batch technique was focused on obtaining basic sorption data of ⁸⁸ᵐTcO₄⁻ on biochar samples including influence of pH, contact time, and Freundlich isotherm. ReO₄ ^-, which has very similar chemical properties to ⁸⁸ᵐTcO₄⁻, was used as a carrier in the experiments. Theoretical modeling of titration curves of biochar samples was based on the application of surface complexation models, namely, so called Chemical Equilibrium Model (CEM) and Ion Exchange Model (IExM). In this case it is assumed that there are two types of surface groups, namely, the so-called layer and edge sites. The dynamic experimental data of sorption curves were fitted by a model based on complementary error function erfc(x).

Surface Complexation Models of Pertechnetate on Biochar/Montmorillonite Composite-Batch and Dynamic Sorption Study

The study summarizes the results of monitoring the properties of two types of sorbents, BC1 (biochar sample 1) and BC2a (biochar sample 2), prepared by pyrolysis of bamboo biomass (BC1) and as its composite with montmorillonite K10 (BC2a). The main goal was to study their applicability to the Tc (VII) separation from liquid wastes, using NH₄ReO₄ as a carrier. The research was focused on determining the sorbents surface properties (by XRF (X-ray fluorescence) method and potentiometric titration in order to determine the properties of surface groups-Chemical Equilibrium Model (CEM) and Ion Exchange Model (IExM) models were applied here). As well as monitoring Tc (VII) (+Re(VII)) sorption, especially to determine equilibrium isotherm, the influence of pH and kinetics. The subject of research was also the dynamics of sorption, including its mathematical-physical modeling. Both sorbents have good properties against Tc (VII), however BC2a, due to the presence of montmorillonite, is more advantageous in this respect. It has a higher sorption capacity and faster kinetic investigation. An important finding is that the optimal pH is 2-3, which is related not only to the protonation of surface groups (they have a positive charge), but also to the negative form of the existence of Tc (VII) and Re (VII): TcO₄^- and ReO₄^-.

Reduction of Bromate by Cobalt-Impregnated Biochar Fabricated via Pyrolysis of Lignin Using CO2 as a Reaction Medium

In this study, pyrolysis of lignin impregnated with cobalt (Co) was conducted to fabricate a Co-biochar (i.e., Co/lignin biochar) for use as a catalyst for bromate (BrO₃^-) reduction. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) was employed as a reaction medium in the pyrolysis to induce desired effects associated with CO₂; (1) the enhanced thermal cracking of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) evolved from the thermal degradation of biomass, and (2) the direct reaction between CO₂ and VOCs, which resulted in the enhanced generation of syngas (i.e., H₂ and CO). This study placed main emphases on three parts: (1) the role of impregnated Co in pyrolysis of lignin in the presence of CO₂, (2) the characterization of Co/lignin biochar, and (3) evaluation of catalytic capability of Co-lignin biochar in BrO₃^- reduction. The findings from the pyrolysis experiments strongly evidenced that the desired CO₂ effects were strengthened due to catalytic effect of impregnated Co in lignin. For example, the enhanced generation of syngas from pyrolysis of Coimpregnated lignin in CO₂ was more significant than the case without Co impregnation. Moreover, pyrolysis of Coimpregnated lignin in CO₂ led to production of biochar of which surface area (599 m² g^-1) is nearly 100 times greater than the biochar produced in N₂ (6.6 m² g^-1). Co/lignin biochar produced in CO₂ also showed a great performance in catalyzing BrO₃^- reduction as compared to the biochar produced in N₂.
