Detection of Glaucoma on Fundus Images Using Deep Learning on a New Image Set Obtained with a Smartphone and Handheld Ophthalmoscope

Statistics show that an estimated 64 million people worldwide suffer from glaucoma. To aid in the detection of this disease, this paper presents a new public dataset containing eye fundus images that was developed for glaucoma pattern-recognition studies using deep learning (DL). The dataset, denoted Brazil Glaucoma, comprises 2000 images obtained from 1000 volunteers categorized into two groups: those with glaucoma (50%) and those without glaucoma (50%). All images were captured with a smartphone attached to a Welch Allyn panoptic direct ophthalmoscope. Further, a DL approach for the automatic detection of glaucoma was developed using the new dataset as input to a convolutional neural network ensemble model. The accuracy between positive and negative glaucoma detection, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated using five-fold cross-validation to train and refine the classification model. The results showed that the proposed method can identify glaucoma from eye fundus images with an accuracy of 90.0%. Thus, the combination of fundus images obtained using a smartphone attached to a portable panoptic ophthalmoscope and artificial intelligence algorithms yielded satisfactory results in the overall accuracy of glaucoma detection tests. Consequently, the proposed approach can contribute to the development of technologies aimed at massive population screening of the disease.

Ensemble CNN to Detect Drowsy Driving with In-Vehicle Sensor Data

Drowsy driving is a major threat to the safety of drivers and road traffic. Accurate and reliable drowsy driving detection technology can reduce accidents caused by drowsy driving. In this study, we present a new method to detect drowsy driving with vehicle sensor data obtained from the steering wheel and pedal pressure. From our empirical study, we categorized drowsy driving into long-duration drowsy driving and short-duration drowsy driving. Furthermore, we propose an ensemble network model composed of convolution neural networks that can detect each type of drowsy driving. Each subnetwork is specialized to detect long- or short-duration drowsy driving using a fusion of features, obtained through time series analysis. To efficiently train the proposed network, we propose an imbalanced data-handling method that adjusts the ratio of normal driving data and drowsy driving data in the dataset by partially removing normal driving data. A dataset comprising 198.3 h of in-vehicle sensor data was acquired through a driving simulation that includes a variety of road environments such as urban environments and highways. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated with a dataset. This study achieved the detection of drowsy driving with an accuracy of up to 94.2%.

Two Ensemble-CNN Approaches for Colorectal Cancer Tissue Type Classification

In recent years, automatic tissue phenotyping has attracted increasing interest in the Digital Pathology (DP) field. For Colorectal Cancer (CRC), tissue phenotyping can diagnose the cancer and differentiate between different cancer grades. The development of Whole Slide Images (WSIs) has provided the required data for creating automatic tissue phenotyping systems. In this paper, we study different hand-crafted feature-based and deep learning methods using two popular multi-classes CRC-tissue-type databases: Kather-CRC-2016 and CRC-TP. For the hand-crafted features, we use two texture descriptors (LPQ and BSIF) and their combination. In addition, two classifiers are used (SVM and NN) to classify the texture features into distinct CRC tissue types. For the deep learning methods, we evaluate four Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures (ResNet-101, ResNeXt-50, Inception-v3, and DenseNet-161). Moreover, we propose two Ensemble CNN approaches: Mean-Ensemble-CNN and NN-Ensemble-CNN. The experimental results show that the proposed approaches outperformed the hand-crafted feature-based methods, CNN architectures and the state-of-the-art methods in both databases.
