Steric Effects on the Thermal Processes of Hemithioindigo Based Molecular Motor Rotation

Tuning the thermal behavior of light driven molecular motors is fundamentally important for their future rational design. In many molecular motors thermal ratcheting steps are comprised of helicity inversions, energetically stabilizing the initial photoproducts. In this work we investigated a series of five hemithioindigo (HTI) based molecular motors to reveal the influence of steric hindrance in close proximity to the rotation axle on this process. Applying a high yielding synthetic procedure, we synthesized constitutional isomeric derivatives to distinguish between substitution effects at the aromatic and aliphatic position on the rotor fragment. The kinetics of thermal helix inversions were elucidated using low temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy and an in situ irradiation technique. In combination with a detailed theoretical description, a comparative analysis of substituent effects on the thermal helix inversions of the rotation cycle is now possible. Such deeper understanding of the rotational cycle of HTI molecular motors is essential for speed regulation and future applications of visible light triggered nanomachines.

Structural and Thermodynamic Peculiarities of Core-Shell Particles at Fluid Interfaces from Triangular Lattice Models

A triangular lattice model for pattern formation by core-shell particles at fluid interfaces is introduced and studied for the particle to core diameter ratio equal to 3. Repulsion for overlapping shells and attraction at larger distances due to capillary forces are assumed. Ground states and thermodynamic properties are determined analytically and by Monte Carlo simulations for soft outer- and stiffer inner shells, with different decay rates of the interparticle repulsion. We find that thermodynamic properties are qualitatively the same for slow and for fast decay of the repulsive potential, but the ordered phases are stable for temperature ranges, depending strongly on the shape of the repulsive potential. More importantly, there are two types of patterns formed for fixed chemical potential-one for a slow and another one for a fast decay of the repulsion at small distances. In the first case, two different patterns-for example clusters or stripes-occur with the same probability for some range of the chemical potential. For a fixed concentration, an interface is formed between two ordered phases with the closest concentration, and the surface tension takes the same value for all stable interfaces. In the case of degeneracy, a stable interface cannot be formed for one out of four combinations of the coexisting phases, because of a larger surface tension. Our results show that by tuning the architecture of a thick polymeric shell, many different patterns can be obtained for a sufficiently low temperature.

Tuning the Ground and Excited State Dynamics of Hemithioindigo Molecular Motors by Changing Substituents

Efficiency and performance of light triggered molecular motors are crucial features that need to be mechanistically understood to improve the performance and enable conscious property tailoring for specific applications. In this work, three different hemithioindigo-based molecular motors are investigated and all four steps in their complete unidirectional rotation are unraveled fully quantitatively. Transient absorption spectroscopy across twelve orders of magnitude in time is used to probe the fs nuclear motions up to the ms thermal kinetics, covering the timeframe of the whole motor rotation. The newly known full mechanisms allow simulation of the motor systems to scrutinize their performance at realistic illumination conditions. This highlights the importance of photoisomerization quantum yields for the rotation speed. The substitution pattern in close proximity to the rotation axle influences the excited and ground state properties. Reduction of electron donation and concomitant increase of steric hindrance leads to faster photoisomerization reactions with quasi-ballistic behavior, but also to a slight decrease in the quantum efficiency. The expected decelerating effects of increased sterics are primarily manifested in the ground state. A promising approach for next-generation hemithioindigo motors is to elevate electron donation at the rotor fragment followed by an increase of steric hindrance.

Revisit of large-gap Si16 clusters encapsulating group-IV metal atoms (Ti, Zr, Hf)

Doped clusters by Si₁₆ cage encapsulating group-IV metal atoms (M@Si₁₆ , M = Ti, Zr and Hf) are computationally investigated by both density functional theory (DFT) and high-level CCSD(T) method. Their low-energy structures are globally searched using a genetic algorithm based on DFT. The ground state structures of neutral and anionic M@Si₁₆ are determined by calculating the vertical and adiabatic detachment energies and comparing them with the experimental data. For neutral Ti@Si₁₆ , the Frank-Kasper (FK) deltahedron with T _d symmetry and distorted FK isomer with C_3v symmetry are nearly degenerate as the ground state and may coexist in laboratory, while the distorted FK isomer is the most probable structure for Ti@Si₁₆ ^- anion. For neutral and anionic Zr@Si₁₆ and Hf@Si₁₆ clusters, the ground states at finite temperatures up to 300 K are the fullerene-like D _4d bitruncated square trapezohedron. These theoretical results establish a more complete picture for the most stable structures of M@Si₁₆ clusters, which possess large gaps and may serve as building blocks for electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Untangling complex networks: risk minimization in financial markets through accessible spin glass ground states

Recurrent international financial crises inflict significant damage to societies and stress the need for mechanisms or strategies to control risk and tamper market uncertainties. Unfortunately, the complex network of market interactions often confounds rational approaches to optimize financial risks. Here we show that investors can overcome this complexity and globally minimize risk in portfolio models for any given expected return, provided the relative margin requirement remains below a critical, empirically measurable value. In practice, for markets with centrally regulated margin requirements, a rational stabilization strategy would be keeping margins small enough. This result follows from ground states of the random field spin glass Ising model that can be calculated exactly through convex optimization when relative spin coupling is limited by the norm of the network's Laplacian matrix. In that regime, this novel approach is robust to noise in empirical data and may be also broadly relevant to complex networks with frustrated interactions that are studied throughout scientific fields.
