Choroid Plexus Carcinoma with Hyaline Globules: An Uncommon Histological Finding

Background: Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a predominately pediatric CNS tumor with a variety of histologic features, with hyaline globules only reported once previously. Case report: A two-year-old male child presented with headaches, vomiting, and lower limb weakness. Radiological examination revealed a right temporoparietal intra-axial tumor. On histology, it showed features of CPC containing multiple eosinophilic intracytoplasmic and extracellular hyaline globular structures, which were PAS-positive, diastase resistant, and immunoreactive for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Conclusion: CPC can occasionally show AFP immune-positive hyaline globules.

Well-differentiated fetal adenocarcinoma of the lung mimicking adenoid cystic carcinoma on fine needle aspiration: A case report

Well-differentiated fetal adenocarcinoma (WDFA) of the lung is a rare variant of adenocarcinoma with an unusual morphology. Although the histologic features of this rare neoplasm have been well established, there is a deficit in the literature with regards to its discrete cytomorphologic features. We report the fine needle aspiration (FNA) findings of a case of this unusual malignancy in a 44-year-old man with an incidental lung nodule. FNA revealed three-dimensional clusters of epithelial cells with scant cytoplasm, hyperchromatic nuclei that are associated with an extracellular metachromatic matrix. The original cytology report was signed out as an epithelial neoplasm favor adenoid cystic carcinoma. Consequently, a wedge resection of the lung was done and the histologic diagnosis was WDFA of the lung. The findings of minimal nuclear atypia in association with focally abundant spheres of extracellular matrix can mimic adenoid cystic carcinoma. WDFA has good prognosis and therefore, pre-operative cytologic diagnosis is critical to clinical management. We present the cytomorphologic features of this neoplasm with particular emphasis on a potential diagnostic pitfall of this rare entity. Diagn. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of type A thymoma with adenoid cystic pattern: a case report with emphasis on peculiar hyaline globules in cytologic smear

Here we report a case of type A thymoma with adenoid cystic pattern, which extended to the lower anterior neck and clinically mimicked a nontoxic thyroid goiter. The cytologic smears of fine-needle aspiration showed cohesive fragments of short spindle cells with finely granular chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli. Scant interspersed lymphocytes were present. On air-dried Liu stained preparation, there were many magenta-colored hyaline globules wrapped by spindle tumor cells. The cytomorphologic findings correlated with the adenoid cystic pattern in histology. The cytologic differential diagnosis and the prognostic aspects of type A thymoma were briefly discussed.

Hyaline globules in mammary myofibroblastoma: a case report

A 52-year-old otherwise healthy woman presented with a solitary firm mass in the right breast. Histopathological evaluation of the 1.5-cm mass showed a mammary myofibroblastoma of the conventional spindle-cell type. High-power examination of hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections showed round, eosinophilic, intracytoplasmic, as well as extracellular, hyaline globules. These 5- to 20-µm globules appeared gray with a pinkish rim on Masson's trichrome stain. Immunohistochemically, the hyaline globules were strongly reactive with smooth muscle myosin heavy chain, desmin, and caldesmon. Histologically similar inclusion bodies have been reported in phylloides tumors--including those with myoid differentiation. To our knowledge, this is the first description of hyaline globules, a peculiar histological curiosity with no known clinical significance, in mammary myofibroblastoma.
