Current available treatment technologies for saline wastewater and land-based treatment as an emerging environment-friendly technology: A review

Different industrial activities such as agro-food processing and manufacturing, leather manufacturing, and paper and pulp production generate highly saline wastewater. Direct discharge of saline wastewater has resulted in pollution of waterbodies by very high magnitudes. Consequently, an enormous number of pollutants such as heavy metals, salts, and organic matter are also released into the environment threatening the survival of human and biota. Saline wastewater also has significant effects on survival of plants, agricultural activities, and groundwater systems. Several treatments and disposal technologies are available for saline wastewater, but the selection of the most appropriate treatment and disposal technology still remains a major challenge with respect to the economic or technical constraints. Considering the sustainable management of saline wastewater, the present review is an attempt to compile the existing and emerging technologies for the treatment of saline wastewater. Among all the individual and hybrid technologies, land-based treatment systems are proven to be the most efficient technologies considering the energy demands, economic, and treatment efficiencies. Likewise, new and sustainable technologies are the need of hour integrating both the treatment and management and the resource recovery factors along with the ultimate goal of the protection in terms of human health and environmental aspect. [Hybrid grafts for aortic arch reconstruction: evolution and state of the art]

The analysis of the gained experience in treatment of patients with pathology of the arch and descending portion of the aorta is suggestive that the 'frozen elephant trunk' technique is an effective and safe method. In this connection, there is an increasing need for universal hybrid devices characterized by ease of use and durability in various aortic pathologies. Discussed in the article is the state of the art of the technology of treatment of patient with aortic arch pathology by means of hybrid grafts, followed by comparative analysis of currently used vascular hybrid prostheses, and although none of the hybrid grafts available worldwide is either universal or ideal, the grafts for the 'frozen elephant trunk' procedure continue to be improved, which will inevitably lead to wide implementation of this technique.

Biomimetic Hybrid Systems for Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering approaches appear nowadays highly promising for the regeneration of injured/diseased tissues. Biomimetic scaffolds are continuously been developed to act as structural support for cell growth and proliferation as well as for the delivery of cells able to be differentiated, and also of bioactive molecules like growth factors and even signaling cues. The current research concerns materials employed to develop biological scaffolds with improved features as well as complex preparation techniques. In this work, hybrid systems based on natural polymers are discussed and the efforts focused to provide new polymers able to mimic proteins and DNA are extensively explained. Progress on the scaffold fabrication technique is mentioned, those processes based on solution and melt electrospinning or even on their combination being mainly discussed. Selection of the appropriate hybrid technology becomes vital to get optimal architecture to reasonably accomplish the final applications. Representative examples of the recent possibilities on tissue regeneration are finally given.
