Effect of schooling on flow generated sounds from carangiform swimmers

Computational models are used to examine the effect of schooling on flow generated noise from fish swimming using their caudal fins. We simulate the flow as well as the far-field hydrodynamic sound generated by the time-varying pressure loading on these carangiform swimmers. The effect of the number of swimmers in the school, the relative phase of fin flapping of the swimmers, and their spatial arrangement is examined. The simulations indicate that the phase of the fin flapping is a dominant factor in the total sound radiated into the far-field by a group of swimmers. For small schools, a suitable choice of relative phase between the swimmers can significantly reduce the overall intensity of the sound radiated to the far-field. The relative positioning of the swimmers is also shown to have an impact on the total radiated noise. For a larger school, even highly uncorrelated phases of fin movement between the swimmers in the school are very effective in significantly reducing the overall intensity of sound radiated into the far-field. The implications of these findings for fish ethology as well as the design and operation of bioinspired vehicles are discussed.

Gas Migration Episodes Observed During Peridotite Alteration in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

Serpentinization and carbonation of mantle rocks (peridotite alteration) are fundamentally important processes for a spectrum of geoscience topics, including arc volcanism, earthquake processes, chemosynthetic biological communities, and carbon sequestration. Data from a hydrophone array deployed in the Multi-Borehole Observatory (MBO) of the Oman Drilling Project demonstrates that free gas generated by peridotite alteration and/or microbial activity migrates through the formation in discrete bursts of activity. We detected several, minutes-long, swarms of gas discharge into Hole BA1B of the MBO over the course of a 9 month observation interval. The episodic nature of the migration events indicates that free gas accumulates in the permeable flow network, is pressurized, and discharges rapidly into the borehole when a critical pressure, likely associated with a capillary barrier at a flow constriction, is reached. Our observations reveal a dynamic mode of fluid migration during serpentinization, and highlight the important role that free gas can play in modulating pore pressure, fluid flow, and alteration kinetics during peridotite weathering.

Discovery of widely available abyssal rock patches reveals overlooked habitat type and prompts rethinking deep-sea biodiversity

Ground-truthed analyses of multibeam sonar data along a fracture zone of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge reveal an abyssal seafloor much rockier than previously assumed. Our data show rock exposures occurring at all crustal ages from 0–100 Ma along the Vema Fracture Zone and that approximately 260,000 km² of rock habitats can be expected to occur along Atlantic fracture zones alone. This higher than expected geodiversity implies that future sampling campaigns should be considerably more sophisticated than at present to capture the full deep-sea habitat heterogeneity. We provide a baseline to unravel the processes responsible for the evolution and persistence of biodiversity on the deep seafloor as well as to determine the significant scales of these processes in the benthoscape.

Habitat heterogeneity and species diversity are often linked. On the deep seafloor, sediment variability and hard-substrate availability influence geographic patterns of species richness and turnover. The assumption of a generally homogeneous, sedimented abyssal seafloor is at odds with the fact that the faunal diversity in some abyssal regions exceeds that of shallow-water environments. Here we show, using a ground-truthed analysis of multibeam sonar data, that the deep seafloor may be much rockier than previously assumed. A combination of bathymetry data, ruggedness, and backscatter from a trans-Atlantic corridor along the Vema Fracture Zone, covering crustal ages from 0 to 100 Ma, show rock exposures occurring at all crustal ages. Extrapolating to the whole Atlantic, over 260,000 km² of rock habitats potentially occur along Atlantic fracture zones alone, significantly increasing our knowledge about abyssal habitat heterogeneity. This implies that sampling campaigns need to be considerably more sophisticated than at present to capture the full deep-sea habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity.
