Hydrochromic Perovskite System with Reversible Blue-Green Color for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting

The intrinsic instability of halide perovskites toward to external stimulus, has created a competitive advantage for designing stimuli-responsive materials. However, the external environment tuning reversibly fluorescence emission of perovskite system is still limited. In this work, humidity is verified to act as a new option to modulate the emission properties of mixed-halide perovskite. The perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) photoirradiated in dichloromethane are easily and stably redispersed in water, and emit bright fluorescence which is quite different from the original. Moreover, the perovskites confined on glass slide can reversibly switch their fluorescence between blue and green colors under moisture. It is demonstrated that the factors of different solubilities of CsCl and CsBr in water, the structural transformation of perovskites and the confine of glass matrix play key roles in the reversible transformation. Finally, the combination of hydrochromic CsPb(Brx Cly )3 and water-resistant CsPb(Brx Cly )3 -polymethyl methacrylate have been applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting, which greatly improves the information security. This work not only give an insight into the effects of humidity on fluorescence and structures of PNCs, but also offer a new class of hydrochromic PNCs materials based on reversible emission transformation for potential application in sensors, anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Bioinspired Perovskite Nanocrystals-Integrated Photonic Crystal Microsphere Arrays for Information Security

Information security occupies an important position in the era of big data. Attempts to improve the security performance tend to impart them with more additional encryption strategies. Herein, inspired by the wettability feature of Stenocara beetle elytra and signal model of traffic light, a novel array of perovskite nanocrystals (PNs)-integrated PhC microsphere for information security is presented. The photoluminescent PNs are encapsulated in angle-independent PhC microspheres to impart them with binary optical signals as coding information. Through the multimask superposition approach, PNs-integrated PhC microspheres with different codes are placed into fluorosilane-treated PDMS substrate to form different arrays. These arrays could converge moisture on PhC microspheres in wet environment, which avoids the ions loss of the PNs and effectively prevented mutual contamination. In addition, the fluorescence of the PNs inside PhC microspheres could reversibly quench or recover in response to the environmental moisture. Based on these features, it is demonstrated that the PNs-integrated PhC microsphere arrays could realize various information encryption modes, which indicate their excellent values in information security fields.

Hydrochromic Smart Windows to Remove Harmful Substances by Mimicking Medieval European Stained Glasses

Medieval European stained glass windows are known to display various splendid colors and remove harmful airborne substances. At present, the functions of medieval stained glass windows are imperative, from the environment, health, and energy perspectives, to develop multi-functional windows that report/control environmental conditions and remove harmful substances by utilizing visible-near-infrared light sources. Here, we suggest a strategy to mimic medieval European stained glasses for devising plasmonic-based multi-functional smart stained glass windows. The stained glass windows are prepared from the deposition of gold nanoparticles on a glass that is preliminarily coated with a responsive colloidal nanosheet. The temperature responsiveness of the nanosheet enables the effective control the gold nanoparticle density of the stained glasses. Therefore, the windows can display blue, violet, and cranberry colors. The colors become iridescent by introducing a photonic crystal monolayer. The stained glass windows are hydrochromic: they switch the colors (blue ↔ cranberry) and modulate light transmittance depending on humidity conditions. Moreover, they can remove formaldehyde under the illumination of a low-power indoor light. These functions provide a new platform for the futuristic smart windows that clean indoor air for the human health and save energy.

Inkjet-Printable Hydrochromic Paper for Encrypting Information and Anticounterfeiting

Developing rewritable papers has gathered immense interest in recent times in view of developing sustainability in print media without exhausting environmental resources. We herein present a rapid and facile procedure for the fabrication of a communication medium by treating the surface of a paper with synthetic organic molecules, after which plain water could be used as an ink to print and reprint numerous times on the treated paper before disposal. Interestingly, as the paper comes in contact with water, the molecules are driven to reorganize in a slip-stacked arrangement. This alters their ground and excited state properties by hydrogen-bond-assisted nonradiative decay, in which the associated changes are visible to the naked eye. The changes evolved are sensitive to the solubility parameter of the solvent and thermally reversible, thus linking the hydrochromic property to the paper. Against a background of concerns over a rise in counterfeiting and leaks of confidential information, prospects for encrypted communications and anticounterfeiting is herein demonstrated.
