Limited view cone-beam x-ray luminescence tomography based on depth compensation and group sparsity prior

Significance: As a promising hybrid imaging technique with x-ray excitable nanophosphors, cone-beam x-ray luminescence computed tomography (CB-XLCT) has been proposed for in-depth biological imaging applications. In situations in which the full rotation of the imaging object (or x-ray source) is inapplicable, the x-ray excitation is limited by geometry, or a lower x-ray excitation dose is mandatory, limited view CB-XLCT reconstruction would be essential. However, this will result in severe ill-posedness and poor image quality. <p> Aim: The aim is to develop a limited view CB-XLCT imaging strategy to reduce the scanning span and a corresponding reconstruction method to achieve robust imaging performance.</p> <p> Approach: In this study, a group sparsity-based reconstruction method is proposed with the consideration that nanophosphors usually cluster in certain regions, such as tumors or major organs such as the liver. In addition, depth compensation (DC) is adopted to avoid the depth inconsistency caused by a limited view strategy. </p> <p> Results: Experiments using numerical simulations and physical phantoms with different edge-to-edge distances were carried out to illustrate the validity of the proposed method. The reconstruction results showed that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods in terms of localization accuracy, target shape, image contrast, and spatial resolution with two perpendicular projections. </p> <p> Conclusions: A limited view CB-XLCT imaging strategy with two perpendicular projections and a reconstruction method based on DC and group sparsity, which is essential for fast CB-XLCT imaging and for some practical imaging applications, such as imaging-guided surgery, is proposed. </p>

Stochastic Proximal Gradient Algorithms for Multi-Source Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography

The development of accurate and efficient image reconstruction algorithms is a central aspect of quantitative photoacoustic tomography (QPAT). In this paper, we address this issues for multi-source QPAT using the radiative transfer equation (RTE) as accurate model for light transport. The tissue parameters are jointly reconstructed from the acoustical data measured for each of the applied sources. We develop stochastic proximal gradient methods for multi-source QPAT, which are more efficient than standard proximal gradient methods in which a single iterative update has complexity proportional to the number applies sources. Additionally, we introduce a completely new formulation of QPAT as multilinear (MULL) inverse problem which avoids explicitly solving the RTE. The MULL formulation of QPAT is again addressed with stochastic proximal gradient methods. Numerical results for both approaches are presented. Besides the introduction of stochastic proximal gradient algorithms to QPAT, we consider the new MULL formulation of QPAT as main contribution of this paper.

Correcting the limited view in optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) has proven useful for anatomical and functional imaging with high spatial resolutions. However, the coherent signal generation and the desired reflection-mode detection in OR-PAM can result in a limited detectability of features aligned with the acoustic axis (ie, vertical structures). Here, we investigated the limited-view phenomenon in OR-PAM by simulating the generation and propagation of the acoustic pressure waves and determined the key optical parameters affecting the visibility of vertical structures. Proof-of-concept numerical experiments were performed with different illumination angles, optical foci and numerical apertures (NA) of the objective lens. The results collectively show that an NA of 0.3 can readily improve the visibility of vertical structures in a typical reflection-mode OR-PAM system. This conclusion was confirmed by numerical simulations on the cortical blood vessels in a mouse brain and by experiments in a suture-cross phantom and in a mouse brain in vivo.

Tripling the detection view of high-frequency linear-array-based photoacoustic computed tomography by using two planar acoustic reflectors

BACKGROUND

Linear-array-based photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) suffers from a limited view. Circular scanning does increase the detection view angle but is time-consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to increase the detection view angle of linear-array-based PACT without sacrificing imaging speed.

METHODS

Two planar acoustic reflectors placed at 120 degrees to each other were added to a linear-array-based PACT system. Each reflector redirects originally undetectable photoacoustic waves back to the transducer array elements, and together they triple the original detection view angle of the PACT system.

RESULTS

Adding two reflectors increased the detection view angle from 80 to 240 degrees. As a comparison, a single-reflector PACT has a detection view angle of only 160 degrees. A leaf skeleton phantom with a rich vascular network was imaged with the double-reflector PACT, and most of its features were recovered.

CONCLUSIONS

The two acoustic reflectors triple the detection view angle of a linear-array-based PACT without compromising the original imaging speed. This nearly full-view detection capability produces higher-quality images than single-reflector PACT or conventional PACT without reflectors.
