Low-Frequency Bandgap Characterization of a Locally Resonant Pentagonal Phononic Crystal Beam Structure

This paper proposes a local resonance-type pentagonal phononic crystal beam structure for practical engineering applications to achieve better vibration and noise reduction. The energy band, transmission curve, and displacement field corresponding to the vibration modes of the structure are calculated based on the finite element method and Bloch-Floquet theorem. Furthermore, an analysis is conducted to understand the mechanism behind the generation of bandgaps. The numerical analysis indicates that the pentagonal unit oscillator creates a low-frequency bandgap between 60-70 Hz and 107-130 Hz. Additionally, the pentagonal phononic crystal double-layer beam structure exhibits excellent vibration damping, whereas the single-layer beam has poor vibration damping. The article comparatively analyzes the effects of different parameters on the bandgap range and transmission loss of a pentagonal phononic crystal beam. For instance, increasing the thickness of the lead layer leads to an increase in the width of the bandgap. Similarly, increasing the thickness of the rubber layer, intermediate plate, and total thickness of the phononic crystals results in a bandgap at lower frequencies. By adjusting the parameters, the beam can be optimized for practical engineering purposes.

Low Frequency Attenuation Characteristics of Two-Dimensional Hollow Scatterer Locally Resonant Phonon Crystals

The finite element method (FEM) was applied to study the low frequency band gap characteristics of a designed phonon crystal plate formed by embedding a hollow lead cylinder coated with silicone rubber into four epoxy resin short connecting plates. The energy band structure, transmission loss and displacement field were analyzed. Compared to the band gap characteristics of three traditional phonon crystal plates, namely, the square connecting plate adhesive structure, embedded structure and fine short connecting plate adhesive structure, the phonon crystal plate of the short connecting plate structure with a wrapping layer was more likely to generate low frequency broadband. The vibration mode of the displacement vector field was observed, and the mechanism of band gap formation was explained based on the spring mass model. By discussing the effects of the width of the connecting plate, the inner and outer radii and height of the scatterer on the first complete band gap, it indicated that the narrower the width of the connecting plate, the smaller the thickness; the smaller the inner radius of the scatterer, the larger the outer radius; and the higher the height, the more conducive it is to the expansion of the band gap.

A Finite/Spectral Element Hybrid Method for Modeling and Band-Gap Characterization of Metamaterial Sandwich Plates

In this study, elastic metamaterial sandwich plates with axially deformed Timoshenko beam cores, considering both the out-of-plane and in-plane deformations of the face plates, are designed and the vibration band-gap properties are explored. The beam cores act as local resonators that can bear axial force, bending moment and shearing force. The finite element method (FEM) and the spectral element method (SEM) are combined to create the finite/spectral element hybrid method (FE-SEHM) for establishing the dynamic model and calculating the frequency response functions (FRFs) of the elastic metamaterial sandwich plate with axially deformed beam cores. It is observed that the metamaterial sandwich plate possesses both the axial and transverse vibration band-gaps of the beams, and the two kinds of band-gaps are independent. Compared with the metamaterial sandwich plates with rod cores, those with axially deformed beam cores have more extensive application ranges for vibration reduction.

Broadband Air-Coupled Ultrasound Emitter and Receiver Enable Simultaneous Measurement of Thickness and Speed of Sound in Solids

Air-coupled ultrasound sensors have advantages over contact ultrasound sensors when a sample should not become contaminated or influenced by the couplant or the measurement has to be a fast and automated inline process. Thereby, air-coupled transducers must emit high-energy pulses due to the low air-to-solid power transmission ratios (10^-3 to 10^-8). Currently used resonant transducers trade bandwidth-a prerequisite for material parameter analysis-against pulse energy. Here we show that a combination of a non-resonant ultrasound emitter and a non-resonant detector enables the generation and detection of pulses that are both high in amplitude (130 dB) and bandwidth (2 µs pulse width). We further show an initial application: the detection of reflections inside of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic plate with thicknesses between 1.7 mm and 10 mm. As the sensors work contact-free, the time of flight and the period of the in-plate reflections are independent parameters. Hence, a variation of ultrasound velocity is distinguishable from a variation of plate thickness and both properties are determined simultaneously. The sensor combination is likely to find numerous industrial applications necessitating high automation capacity and opens possibilities for air-coupled, single-side ultrasonic inspection.

Local Resonant Attenuation of Stress Waves in Particulate Composites

The attenuation of stress waves due to the local resonance is numerically studied using the finite element method (FEM) in this work. The natural frequency of a representative composite unit embedded with coated particles is analyzed and the major factors that influence the natural frequency are examined. Local resonance is inspired when the frequency of the incident stress wave is close to the natural frequency of the particles in the composite. Significant reduction in the amplitude of the stress is obtained when the local resonance occurs, because a large amount of the incident energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the particles, which is rapidly dissipated through the strong oscillations of those particles. It is also observed that the attenuation for the incident stress waves with a range of frequencies can be achieved by using the particles with various local natural frequencies in a composite.
