How delocalized are the polyacenes?

In an attempt to quantify electron delocalization in polyacenes with up to 50 carbon atoms, we have performed self-consistent field calculations in which the π electrons are constrained to occupy highly localized molecular orbitals (HILOs) centered on a maximum of two, six or ten adjacent carbon atoms. We have also performed similar calculations on simple polyacene analogs consisting only of hydrogen atoms and exhibiting electron delocalization in the σ framework. We find that the energetic cost of localizing the π electrons in the polyacenes is roughly 60, 5 or 0.1 kJ/mol per ring atom for the two-, six- and ten-atom HILOs, respectively, and the use of these localized models overestimates the predicted hydrogenation energies of the acenes by roughly 50%, 4% and 0.1%, respectively. We conclude that the chemistry of polyacenes can be modeled well using highly localized descriptions of the π electrons.

Relativistic Density Functional NMR Tensors Analyzed with Spin-free Localized Molecular Orbitals

The implementation of fast relativistic methods based on density functional theory, in conjunction with localized molecular orbital (LMO) based analysis, allows straightforward interpretations of NMR parameters in terms of contributions from core shells, lone pairs, and bonds, for compounds containing elements from across the periodic table. We present a conceptual review of a frequently used LMO analysis of NMR parameters calculated in the presence of spin-orbit interactions and other relativistic effects. An accompanying example focuses on the ¹⁵ N shielding in a heavy metal complex.

Bending the Curve: Molecular Manifestations of Electron Antisymmetry

As very light fermions, electrons are governed by antisymmetric wave functions that lead to exchange integrals in the evaluation of the energy. Here we use the localized representation of orbitals to decompose the electronic energy in a fashion that isolates the enigmatic exchange contributions and characterizes their distinctive control over electron distributions. The key to this completely general analysis is considering the electrons in groups of three, drawing attention to the curvatures of pair potentials, rather than just their amplitudes and slopes. We show that a positive curvature at short distances is essential for the mutual distancing of electrons and a negative curvature at longer distances is essential to account for the influence of lone pairs on bond torsion. Neither curvature is available in the absence of the exchange contributions. Thus, although exchange energies are much shorter range than Coulomb energies, their influence on molecular geometry is profound and readily understood.

Can We Safely Obtain Formal Oxidation States from Centroids of Localized Orbitals?

The use of centroids of localized orbitals as a method to derive oxidation states (OS) from first-principles is critically analyzed. We explore the performance of the closest-atom distance criterion to assign electrons for a number of challenging systems, including high-valent transition metal compounds, π-adducts, and transition metal (TM) carbenes. Here, we also introduce a mixed approach that combines the position of the centroids with Bader's atomic basins as an alternative criterion for electron assignment. The closest-atom criterion performs reasonably well for the challenging systems, but wrongly considers O-H and N-H bonds as hydrides. The new criterion fixes this problem, but underperforms in the case of TM carbenes. Moreover, the OS assignment in dubious cases exhibit undesirable dependence on the particular choice for orbital localization.

Orbitals and the Interpretation of Photoelectron Spectroscopy and (e,2e) Ionization Experiments

Electron momentum spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy provide unique information about electronic structure, but their interpretation has been controversial. This essay discusses a framework for interpretation. Although this interpretation is not new, we believe it is important to present this framework in light of recent publications. The key point is that these experiments provide information about how the electron distribution changes upon ionization, not how electrons behave in the pre-ionized state. Therefore, these experiments do not lead to a "selection of the correct orbitals" in chemistry and do not overturn the well-known conclusion that both delocalized molecular orbitals and localized molecular orbitals are useful for interpreting chemical structure and dynamics. The two types of orbitals can produce identical total molecular electron densities and therefore molecular properties. Different types of orbitals are useful for different purposes.

Valence : A Massively Parallel Implementation of the Variational Subspace Valence Bond Method

This work describes the software package, Valence, for the calculation of molecular energies using the variational subspace valence bond (VSVB) method. VSVB is an ab initio electronic structure method based on nonorthogonal orbitals. Important features of practical value include high parallel scalability, wave functions that can be constructed automatically by combining orbitals from previous calculations, and ground and excited states that can be modeled with a single configuration or determinant. The open-source software package includes tools to generate wave functions, a database of generic orbitals, example input files, and a library build intended for integration with other packages. We also describe the interface to an external software package, enabling the computation of optimized molecular geometries and vibrational frequencies. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
