Differences in Bacterial Co-Occurrence Networks and Ecological Niches at the Surface Sediments and Bottom Seawater in the Haima Cold Seep

Cold seeps are highly productive chemosynthetic ecosystems in the deep-sea environment. Although microbial communities affected by methane seepage have been extensively studied in sediments and seawater, there is a lack of investigation of prokaryotic communities at the surface sediments and bottom seawater. We revealed the effect of methane seepage on co-occurrence networks and ecological niches of prokaryotic communities at the surface sediments and bottom seawater in the Haima cold seep. The results showed that methane seepage could cause the migration of Mn and Ba from the surface sediments to the overlying seawater, altering the elemental distribution at seepage sites (IS) compared with non-seepage sites (NS). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that methane seepage led to closer distances of bacterial communities between surface sediments and bottom seawater. Co-occurrence networks indicated that methane seepage led to more complex interconnections at the surface sediments and bottom seawater. In summary, methane seepage caused bacterial communities in the surface sediments and bottom seawater to become more abundant and structurally complex. This study provides a comprehensive comparison of microbial profiles at the surface sediments and bottom seawater of cold seeps in the South China Sea (SCS), illustrating the impact of seepage on bacterial community dynamics.

Characteristics of Authigenic Minerals around the Sulfate-Methane Transition Zone in the Methane-Rich Sediments of the Northern South China Sea: Inorganic Geochemical Evidence

Sediments at marine cold seep areas provide potential archives of past fluid flow, which allow insights into the evolution of past methane seepage activities. However, signals for anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) might be obscured in bulk sediments in cold-seep settings due to several factors, especially flood and turbidite deposition. Comprehensive inorganic data were gathered in this study to explore the availability of related records at cold seeps and to provide insights into the evolution of past methane seepage activities. Sediments collected from the site 973-4 in the Taixinan Basin on the northern slope of the South China Sea were characterized in terms of total carbon and sulfur, δ¹³C values of total organic carbon (δ¹³C_TIC), δ³⁴S values of chromium reducible sulfur (δ³⁴S_CRS), and foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotopes. The results confirmed a strong correlation between formation of authigenic minerals and AOM. Moreover, the ³⁴S enrichments and abundant chromium reducible sulfur (CRS) contents in the authigenic sulfides in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) within 619-900 cm below seafloor (cmbsf) reflected past high methane fluxes supported by constant methane seepages. Lithological distribution and AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectra) ¹⁴C dating of planktonic foraminifera show that the turbidite (~35.14 ka) was related to a foraminifera-rich interval (Unit II: 440-619 cmbsf) and increased carbonate productivity during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Enrichment of Mo and U was observed accompanied by low contents of nutrient metals (Al, Ti, V, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Cu) in Unit II. The foraminifera-rich interval (Unit II) of cold seep sediments was probably linked to the phenomenon of inconsecutive sedimentary sequence due to the turbidites, which resulted in the lack of Fe, Mn, and Ba enrichment. There is no U enrichment but only Mo enrichment within Unit III, which might be related to H₂S produced by AOM during the methane seepages. Based on the above results, it can be speculated that this area has experienced multiple-episodes of methane seep events. Further exploration of AOM should focus on the risks of rapid deposition, especially the impact of turbidity current on sediments.

Did shifting seawater sulfate concentrations drive the evolution of deep-sea methane-seep ecosystems?

The origin and evolution of the faunas inhabiting deep-sea hydrothermal vents and methane seeps have been debated for decades. These faunas rely on a local source of sulfide and other reduced chemicals for nutrition, which spawned the hypothesis that their evolutionary history is independent from that of photosynthesis-based food chains and instead driven by extinction events caused by deep-sea anoxia. Here I use the fossil record of seep molluscs to show that trends in body size, relative abundance and epifaunal/infaunal ratios track current estimates of seawater sulfate concentrations through the last 150 Myr. Furthermore, the two main faunal turnovers during this time interval coincide with major changes in seawater sulfate concentrations. Because sulfide at seeps originates mostly from seawater sulfate, variations in sulfate concentrations should directly affect the base of the food chain of this ecosystem and are thus the likely driver of the observed macroecologic and evolutionary patterns. The results imply that the methane-seep fauna evolved largely independently from developments and mass extinctions affecting the photosynthesis-based biosphere and add to the growing body of evidence that the chemical evolution of the oceans had a major impact on the evolution of marine life.
