Dynamic Metal-ligand Coordination for Fluorescence Color Regulation of Hydrazone-based Bistable Photoswitches

Achieving effective manipulation of emission color in photoresponsive materials is crucial for various advanced photonic applications. In this study, we designed and synthesized a hydrazone compound 1, ethyl (Z)-2-(2-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)hydrazineylidene)-2-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)acetate, which possesses a push-pull structure incorporating triphenylamine and terpyridine. The emission intensity of compound 1 can be repeatedly switched "off" and "on" by irradiation with visible light and UV light, which induces the isomerization transition between the Z and E forms. In addition, compound 1 is capable of changing its emission wavelength from 540 nm to 607 nm through coordination with different zinc salts in toluene/CH2 Cl2 mixture (v : v=1 : 1). Importantly, we have successfully achieved dynamic manipulation of fluorescence color and intensity by altering the counterions of zinc complexes and switching the isomer from Z to E. Moreover, both compound 1 and its zinc complexes demonstrate remarkable photoswitchable properties with different fluorescence colors in the thin films. Finally, these films with various fluorescence colors were used for the production of luminescent tags.

Environment-Interactive Programmable Deformation of Electronically Innervated Synergistic Fluorescence-Color/Shape Changeable Hydrogel Actuators

Utilization of life-like hydrogels to replicate synergistic shape/color changeable behaviors of living organisms has been long envisaged to produce robust functional integrated soft actuators/robots. However, it remains challenging to construct such hydrogel systems with integrated functionality of remote, localized and environment-interactive control over synergistic discoloration/actuation. Herein, inspired by the evolution-optimized bioelectricity stimulus and multilayer structure of natural reptile skins, electronically innervated fluorescence-color switchable hydrogel actuating systems with bio-inspired multilayer structure comprising of responsive fluorescent hydrogel sheet and conductive Graphene/PDMS film with electrothermal effect is presented. Such rational structure enables remote control over synergistic fluorescence-color and shape changes of the systems via the cascading "electrical trigger-Joule heat generation-hydrogel shrinkage" mechanism. Consequently, local/sequential control of discoloration/actuation are achieved due to the highly controllable electrical stimulus in terms of amplitude and circuit design. Furthermore, by joint use with acoustic sensors, soft chameleon robots with unprecedented environment-interactive adaptation are demonstrated, which can intelligently sense environment signals to adjust their color/shape-changeable behaviors. This work opens previously unidentified avenues for functional integrated soft actuators/robots and will inspire life-like intelligent systems for versatile uses.

Light-Writing and Projecting Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogels for On-Demand Information Display

Intelligent rewritable display systems have been long expected to reduce the heavy consumption of single-use or transient devices in the age of Internet-of-Things. However, it remains challenging to construct such systems with integrated functionality of remote control, rapid activation, multicolor and multimode display. Herein, by learning from the unique multilayer arrangement of chromatophores in chameleon skins, a promising kind of rewritable hydrogel multicolor systems is presented that can combine the merits of near-infrared (NIR) light-writing and projecting modes for on-demand information display. Specifically, the systems have typical multilayer layout consisting of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-sealed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) film as photothermal control unit and embedded fluorescent hydrogels as multicolor display unit, in which thermoresponsive hydrogel is constrained within non-responsive hydrogel. Such rational structure design results in the establishment of one promising display mechanism via the cascading "light trigger-heat generation-fluorescence output" process. On this basis, rapid and reversible hand-written display of arbitrary information is achieved within 5 s. Also, sustainable light-projecting display of predesigned multicolor patterns is demonstrated due to the multilayer design that ensures easy patterning of photothermal control or hydrogel display layer. This study brings functional-integrated merits for novel rewritable display systems and open new possibility to construct high-end products for information display/transmission.

Assessment of Black Rot in Oilseed Rape Grown under Climate Change Conditions Using Biochemical Methods and Computer Vision

Global warming is a challenge for plants and pathogens, involving profound changes in the physiology of both contenders to adapt to the new environmental conditions and to succeed in their interaction. Studies have been conducted on the behavior of oilseed rape plants and two races (1 and 4) of the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) and their interaction to anticipate our response in the possible future climate. Symptoms caused by both races of Xcc were very similar to each other under any climatic condition assayed, although the bacterial count from infected leaves differed for each race. Climate change caused an earlier onset of Xcc symptoms by at least 3 days, linked to oxidative stress and a change in pigment composition. Xcc infection aggravated the leaf senescence already induced by climate change. To identify Xcc-infected plants early under any climatic condition, four classifying algorithms were trained with parameters obtained from the images of green fluorescence, two vegetation indices and thermography recorded on Xcc-symptomless leaves. Classification accuracies were above 0.85 out of 1.0 in all cases, with k-nearest neighbor analysis and support vector machines performing best under the tested climatic conditions.

Construction of Carbon Dots with Color-Tunable Aggregation-Induced Emission by Nitrogen-Induced Intramolecular Charge Transfer

As one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials, the fluorescence of carbon dots (CDs) in solution is extensively studied. Nevertheless, the synthesis of multicolor solid-state fluorescence (SSF) CDs is rarely reported. Herein, CDs with multicolor aggregation-induced emission are prepared using amine molecules, all of them exhibiting dual fluorescence emission at 480 nm (Em-1) and 580-620 nm (Em-2), which is related to the SS bonds of dithiosalicylic acid and the conjugated structure attached to CO/CN bonds, respectively. As a strong electron-withdrawing group, the increase of CN content makes dual-fluorescent groups on the surface of CDs produce push and pull electrons, which determines intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between the double emission. With the increase in CN content from 35.6% to 58.4%, the ICT efficiency increases from 8.71% to 45.94%, changing the fluorescence of CDs from green to red. The increase of ICT efficiency causes fluorescence quantum yield enhancement by nearly five times and redshift of the fluorescence peak. Finally, based on the multicolor luminescence properties induced by the aggregation of CDs, pattern encryption and white-LED devices are realized. Based on the fat solubility and strong ultraviolet absorption characteristics of CDs, fingerprint detection and leaf anti-UV hazards are applied.

Regulation of Multicolor Fluorescence Changes Found in Donor-acceptor-type Mechanochromic Fluorescent Dyes

The regulation of multicolor fluorescence changes in mechanochromic fluorescence (MCF) remains a challenging task. Herein, we report the regulation of MCF using a donor-acceptor structure. Two crystal polymorphs, BTD-pCHO(O) and BTD-pCHO(R) produced by the introduction of formyl groups to an MCF dye, respond to a mechanical stimulus, allowing a three-color fluorescence change. Specifically, the orange-colored fluorescence of the metastable BTD-pCHO(O) polymorph changed to a deep-red color in the amorphous-like state to finally give a red color in the stable BTD-pCHO(R) polymorph. This change occurred by mechanical grinding followed by vapor fuming. The two different crystal packing patterns were selectively regulated by the electronic effect of the introduced functional groups. The two types of selectively formed crystals in BTD(F)-pCHO bearing fluorine atoms, and BTD(OMe)-pCHO bearing methoxy groups, respond to mechanical grinding, allowing for the regulation of multicolor MCL from a three-color change to two different types of two-color changes.

A Multicolor Fluorescence Nanoprobe Platform Using Two-Dimensional Metal Organic Framework Nanosheets and Double Stirring Bar Assisted Target Replacement for Multiple Bioanalytical Applications

Multicolor fluorescence probes can show fluorescence of different colors when detecting different targets, and the excellent feature can create a highly differentiated multicolor sensing platform. However, most of the previously reported multicolor luminescent materials usually suffer from high toxicity and photobleaching, complex preparation procedures, and poor water solubility, which may not be conducive to bioanalytical applications. Two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (2D MOFs), which have large specific surface areas with long-range fluorescence quenching coupled with biomolecular recognition events, have encouraged innovation in biomolecular probing. Here, we propose a 2D-MOF-based multicolor fluorescent aptamer nanoprobe using a double stirring bar assisted target replacement system for enzyme-free signal amplification. It utilizes the interaction between 2D MOFs and DNA molecules to detect multiple antibiotics quickly, sensitively, and selectively. Since 2D MOFs have excellent quenching efficiency for luminescence of fluorescent-dye-labeled single-strand DNA (ssDNA), the background fluorescence can be largely reduced and the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved. When the adsorbed ssDNA formed double helix double-stranded DNA with its complementary ssDNA, its fluorescence can be almost fully recovered. The assay was tested by detecting chloramphenicol (CAP), oxytocin (OTC), and kanamycin (KANA) in biological samples. The developed aptasensor was sufficiently sensitive to detect the antibiotic residues as low as 1.5 pM CAP, 2.4 pM OTC, and 1 pM KANA (S/N = 3). It has been preliminarily used for multicolor imaging of three different antibiotics in fish tissue slices with satisfactory results.

Dual-Mode, Color-Tunable, Lanthanide-Doped Core-Shell Nanoarchitectures for Anti-Counterfeiting Inks and Latent Fingerprint Recognition

With the rapid development of information in modern society, the research and development of advanced anti-counterfeiting technology is becoming more and more important to protect the security and comprehensiveness of information. Therefore, fluorescent ink as an anti-counterfeiting technology and fingerprint recognition technology as a ″human information identification card″ has attracted the attention of many research groups. Herein, dual-mode (upconversion and downconversion) lanthanide-doped luminescent nanoarchitectures were developed using Y₂O₃:Er³⁺,Yb³⁺ nanoparticles as a core and layered lanthanide hydroxides nanomaterials as a shell. Under the irradiation of 980 nm near-infrared light, the nanoarchitectures emitted a bright upconverted red light emission. Meanwhile, under the irradiation of 254 nm UV light, the nanoarchitectures can directly emit multicolor luminescence (from green to yellow-green, yellow, orange, and red) by changing the suitable ratios of Tb³⁺/Eu³⁺ ions. The information can only be extracted when the irradiation of two kinds of excitation light sources existed at the same time, which can improve the difficulty of illegal imitation and enhance the level of anti-counterfeiting. Furthermore, these luminescent nanoarchitectures were investigated for visual latent fingerprint recognition on various substrates with high definition, high sensitivity, and high anti-interference. These results indicated that the nanoarchitectures reported in this study may have great application prospects in information security and identity recognition.

Acid-Induced Multicolor Fluorescence of Pyridazine Derivative

Smart luminescent materials that are responsive to external stimuli have received considerable attention. Here, we report a new D-A type 1,2-pyridiazine derivative (3,4,5,6-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)pyridazine (TPP)) exhibiting turn-on fluorescence upon acid exposure both in solution and in the solid state. The protonation of the 1,2-pyridiazine ring caused a variation in the emission colors of the acidification species from blue (406 nm) to orange-red (630 nm) with a huge Δλ_em (224 nm). As a result, a synthetic rainbow of emission in solution could be achieved from one single molecule, and white photoluminescence was readily tuned by controlled protonation. A trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-sensor film made from TPP was demonstrated as a TFA-sensitive surface with high sensitivity and reversibility. On the basis of these findings, we constructed a solid-state TPP film with a photoacid generator and demonstrated data encryption and decryption via a cascade protonation reaction that was well controlled by UV light.

Use of Blue-Green Fluorescence and Thermal Imaging in the Early Detection of Sunflower Infection by the Root Parasitic Weed Orobanche cumana Wallr

Although the impact of Orobanche cumana Wallr. on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) becomes evident with emergence of broomrape shoots aboveground, infection occurs early after sowing, the host physiology being altered during underground parasite stages. Genetic resistance is the most effective control method and one of the main goals of sunflower breeding programmes. Blue-green fluorescence (BGF) and thermal imaging allow non-destructive monitoring of plant diseases, since they are sensitive to physiological disorders in plants. We analyzed the BGF emission by leaves of healthy sunflower plantlets, and we implemented BGF and thermal imaging in the detection of the infection by O. cumana during underground parasite development. Increases in BGF emission were observed in leaf pairs of healthy sunflowers during their development. Lower BGF was consistently detected in parasitized plants throughout leaf expansion and low pigment concentration was detected at final time, supporting the interpretation of a decrease in secondary metabolites upon infection. Parasite-induced stomatal closure and transpiration reduction were suggested by warmer leaves of inoculated sunflowers throughout the experiment. BGF imaging and thermography could be implemented for fast screening of sunflower breeding material. Both techniques are valuable approaches to assess the processes by which O. cumana alters physiology (secondary metabolism and photosynthesis) of sunflower.
