Progress in Transparent Nano-Ceramics and Their Potential Applications

Transparent nano-ceramics have an important high-transmittance, material-integrating structure and function and a variety of potential applications, such as use in infrared windows, optical isolators, composite armors, intelligent terminal screens, and key materials of solid-state lasers. Transparent ceramics were originally developed to replace single crystals because of their low fabricating cost, controllable shape, and variable composition. Therefore, this study reviews and summarizes the development trends in transparent nano-ceramics and their potential applications. First, we review the research progress and application of laser nano-ceramic materials, focusing on the influence of controllable doping of rare earth ions on thermal conductivity and the realization of large-scale fabrication technology. Second, the latest research progress on magneto-optical transparent nano-ceramics, mainly including terbium gallium garnet (Tb₃Ga₅O₁₂, TGG) ceramics and terbium aluminum garnet (Tb₃Al₅O₁₂, TAG) ceramics, are summarized, and their performance is compared. Third, the research progress of transparent armor nano-ceramic materials, represented by MgAl₂O₃ and Aluminum oxynitride (AlON), are reviewed. Lastly, the progress in electro-optical transparent nano-ceramics and scintillation transparent nano-ceramics is reported, and the influence of the material-fabrication process on electro-optic effect or luminous intensity is compared. Moreover, the effect of particle diameter on fabrication, the relationship between nano powder and performance, and different sintering methods are discussed. In summary, this study provides a meaningful reference for low-cost and sustainable production in the future.

Processing and Thermal Conductivity of Bulk Nanocrystalline Aluminum Nitride

Producing bulk AlN with grain sizes in the nano regime and measuring its thermal conductivity is an important milestone in the development of materials for high energy optical applications. We present the synthesis and subsequent densification of nano-AlN powder to produce bulk nanocrystalline AlN. The nanopowder is synthesized by converting transition alumina (δ-Al₂O₃) with <40 nm grain size to AlN using a carbon free reduction/nitridation process. We consolidated the nano-AlN powder using current activated pressure assisted densification (CAPAD) and achieved a relative density of 98% at 1300 °C with average grain size, d¯~125 nm. By contrast, high quality commercially available AlN powder yields densities ~75% under the same CAPAD conditions. We used the 3-ω method to measure the thermal conductivity, κ of two nanocrystalline samples, 91% dense, d¯ = 110 nm and 99% dense, d¯ = 220 nm, respectively. The dense sample with 220 nm grains has a measured κ = 43 W/(m·K) at room temperature, which is relatively high for a nanocrystalline ceramic, but still low compared to single crystal and large grain sized polycrystalline AlN which can exceed 300 W/(m·K). The reduction in κ in both samples is understood as a combination of grain boundary scattering and porosity effects. We believe that these are finest d¯ reported in bulk dense AlN and is the first report of thermal conductivity for AlN with ≤220 nm grain size. The obtained κ values are higher than the vast majority of conventional optical materials, demonstrating the advantage of AlN for high-energy optical applications.

Thermal Conductivity Characterization of Thermal Grease Containing Copper Nanopowder

As electronic devices and mainboards become smaller, the need for thermal conductive materials having excellent internal heat dissipation is increasing. In this study, nano thermal grease was prepared by mixing in copper nanopowder, which is used as a heat transfer medium in thermal grease, which is a kind of thermal conductive material, with silicon oil. In addition, copper powder was mixed with graphene and alumina, respectively, and the thermal conductivity performance was compared. As a result, the thermal conductivity improved by 4.5 W/m·k over the silicon base, and the upward trend of thermal conductivity increased steadily up to 15 vol. %, and the increasing trend decreased after 20 vol. %. In addition, the increased rate of thermal conductivity from 0 to 5 vol. % and 10 to 15 vol. % was the largest.

Characterization of mixed xWO3(1-x)Y2O3 nanoparticle thick film for gas sensing application

Microstructural, topology, inner morphology, and gas-sensitivity of mixed xWO₃(1-x)Y₂O₃ nanoparticles (x = 1, 0.95, 0.9, 0.85, 0.8) thick-film semiconductor gas sensors were studied. The surface topography and inner morphological properties of the mixed powder and sensing film were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, gas sensitivity properties of the printed films were evaluated in the presence of methane (CH₄) and butane (C₄H₁₀) at up to 500 °C operating temperature of the sensor. The results show that the doping agent can modify some structural properties and gas sensitivity of the mixed powder.
