Experimental investigation of usage of POE lubricants with Al2O3, graphene or CNT nanoparticles in a refrigeration compressor

In this study, the use of nanolubricants containing Al2O3, graphene, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at different mass fractions in a refrigeration compressor was experimentally investigated. The required electrical power of the compressor was measured to determine the effect of the use of nanolubricants. Nanoparticles used in the preparation of nanolubricants were gradually added to the lubricant to determine the optimum nanoparticle mass fraction for each nanoparticle type. Thus, it was found that the compressor operated safely and efficiently with nanolubricants. Furthermore, the optimum mass fractions were determined to be 0.750% for Al2O3, 0.250% for graphene, and 0.250% for CNTs for operating conditions of this study. As a result, the required electrical power of the compressor decreased by 6.26, 6.82, and 5.55% with the addition of Al2O3, graphene, and CNT nanoparticles at optimum mass fractions of 0.750, 0.250, and 0.250% to the lubricant, respectively, compared to the compressor using pure oil. Moreover, density and dynamic viscosity of the nanolubricant samples used in the experiments were also measured, and their kinematic viscosity, which is an important parameter for lubricants, was calculated. It was determined that the kinematic viscosity continuously increased with increasing nanoparticle fraction. In conclusion, nanolubricants containing nanoparticles above the optimum mass fraction increase the required electrical power of the compressor. It is concluded that nanoparticle fractions should not be used above the optimum value in nanolubricant applications.

Thermal and Tribological Properties Enhancement of PVE Lubricant Modified with SiO2 and TiO2 Nanoparticles Additive

The addition of nanoparticles may have a positive or negative impact on the thermal and tribological properties of base lubricant. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of nanoparticle dispersion in lubricant base in relation to its application in refrigeration system compressors. An investigation of tribological and thermal properties of nanolubricants for rolling piston rotary systems was carried out through four-ball tribology tests and thermal conductivity measurements. Nanolubricants dispersed with SiO₂ and TiO₂ nanoparticles were tested at various concentrations and temperatures. The changes in thermal conductivity and coefficient of friction (COF) were analyzed while wear weight loss was also calculated from wear scar size. A regression model of thermal conductivity enhancement was proposed for both types of nanoparticles. Zeta potential results show that nanolubricants have excellent stability. The thermal conductivity increases by the increment of nanoparticle concentration but decreases by temperature. The R-square for the regression model is more than 0.9952 with an average deviation not more than 0.29%. The COF for SiO₂/PVE nanolubricant at 0.003 vol.% reduced 15% from the baseline. The COF for nanolubricants exceeds the result for base lubricants when the concentration is more than the threshold value. The optimum concentration of SiO₂ and TiO₂ nanoparticles improved the thermal and tribological properties of PVE lubricant and may offer an advantage when applied to refrigeration systems.

Effect of IF-WS2 Nanolubricant on R134a Boiling on a Reentrant Cavity Surface

This report quantifies the influence of inorganic fullerene-like tungsten disulfide (IF-WS₂) nanoparticles on the pool-boiling performance of R134a/polyolester mixtures on a commercial (Turbo-ESP) boiling surface. Tungsten disulfide nanoparticles, of roughly 150 nm, were used at a 15% mass fraction in a base polyolester lubricant to produce the test nanolubricant. The nanolubricant was mixed with R134a at a 1% mass fraction. The study showed that the nanolubricant caused an average 37% degradation in the boiling heat flux as compared to R134a/neat-lubricant boiling on a reentrant cavity surface at the same superheat. Similarly, boiling with R134a/neat-lubricant caused, on average, a 27% degradation in the boiling heat flux as compared to pure R134a boiling and the same superheat. An analysis was presented which showed that the nanoparticles were too large and too dense to promote a boiling enhancement. In addition, the fullerene-like structure and the large size encouraged nanoparticle settling, which presumably filled cavities of the boiling surface leading to additional boiling degradations.

Development of a nitrogen-doped 2D material for tribological applications in the boundary-lubrication regime

The present paper describes a facile synthesis method for nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) and the application of N-rGO as an effective additive for improving the tribological properties of base oil. N-rGO has been characterized by different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. N-rGO-based nanolubricants are prepared and their tribological properties are studied using a four-ball tester. The nanolubricants show excellent stability over a period of six months and a significant decrease in coefficient of friction (25%) for small amounts of N-rGO (3 mg/L). The improvement in tribological properties can be attributed to the sliding mechanism of N-rGO accompanied by the high mechanical strength of graphene. Further, the nanolubricant is prepared at large scale (700 liter) and field trials are carried out at one NTPC thermal plant in India. The implementation of the nanolubricant in an induced draft (ID) fan results in the remarkable decrease in the power consumption.
