Nonlocal based FISTA network for noninvasive cardiac transmembrane potential imaging

Objective. The primary aim of our study is to advance our understanding and diagnosis of cardiac diseases. We focus on the reconstruction of myocardial transmembrane potential (TMP) from body surface potential mapping.Approach. We introduce a novel methodology for the reconstruction of the dynamic distribution of TMP. This is achieved through the integration of convolutional neural networks with conventional optimization algorithms. Specifically, we utilize the subject-specific transfer matrix to describe the dynamic changes in TMP distribution and ECG observations at the body surface. To estimate the TMP distribution, we employ LNFISTA-Net, a learnable non-local regularized iterative shrinkage-thresholding network. The coupled estimation processes are iteratively repeated until convergence.Main results. Our experiments demonstrate the capabilities and benefits of this strategy. The results highlight the effectiveness of our approach in accurately estimating the TMP distribution, thereby providing a reliable method for the diagnosis of cardiac diseases.Significance. Our approach demonstrates promising results, highlighting its potential utility for a range of applications in the medical field. By providing a more accurate and dynamic reconstruction of TMP, our methodology could significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases, thereby contributing to advancements in healthcare.

Nonlocal, Flat-Band Meta-Optics for Monolithic, High-Efficiency, Compact Photodetectors

Miniaturized photodetectors are becoming increasingly sought-after components for next-generation technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, integrated wearable devices, or gadgets embedded on the Internet of Things. A major challenge, however, lies in shrinking the device footprint while maintaining high efficiency. This conundrum can be solved by realizing a nontrivial relation between the energy and momentum of photons, such as dispersion-free devices, known as flat bands. Here, we leverage flat-band meta-optics to simultaneously achieve critical absorption over a wide range of incidence angles. For a monolithic silicon meta-optical photodiode, we achieved an ∼10-fold enhancement in the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency. Such enhancement over a large angular range of ∼36° allows incoming light to be collected via a large-aperture lens and focused on a compact photodiode, potentially enabling high-speed and low-light operation. Our research unveils new possibilities for creating compact and efficient optoelectronic devices with far-reaching impact on various applications, including augmented reality and light detection and ranging.

[Identification of Impacts from Meteorology and Local and Transported Photochemical Generation on Ozone Trends in Changsha from 2018 to 2020]

Ozone (O₃) pollution in Hunan province has become the most important factor among the six common conventional pollutants (i.e., NO₂, SO₂, CO, O₃, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5) in the atmospheric environment. Further investigation has indicated that the relevant studies of O₃ are insufficient. Therefore, it is essential to clarify the key driving factors of O₃ variations for government regulators. In this study, a combined method consisting of a generalized additive model (GAM), empirical orthogonal function (EOF), and absolute principal component scores (APCs) model was employed to identify and quantify the impacts of meteorology and local photochemical generation (local) and that transported from outside (nonlocal) on O₃ variations from 2018-2020. Simultaneously, the driving factors of O₃ annual values from 2018 to 2019 and from 2019 to 2020 in Changsha were analyzed. The results showed that O₃ episodes were commonly caused by meteorology when the relative contribution from precursors was high, on the short-term time scale. Overall, on the temporal scale, meteorology and local were the driving factors for the increasing annual O₃ from 2018 to 2019. Additionally, the contribution from meteorology, local, and nonlocal decreased from 2019 to 2020, leading to a lower level of O₃ concentration in 2020. Geographically, the east, north, and south of Changsha were mainly affected by meteorology, local, and nonlocal, respectively. Throughout the three years, nonlocal exhibited a sustained decreasing trend, whereas the tendencies from meteorology and local varied by year and geography. Local contribution in the north of Changsha increased from 2018 to 2019, which was likely attributed to the increasing biogenic volatile organic compound emission (BVOCs), and it became lower in the south owing to the strengthened consumption by NO_x. Impacts from meteorology on O₃ in all sites were enhanced from 2018 to 2019. By contrast, local contribution decreased in the north and increased in the south with the decline in BVOC and NO_x emissions from 2019 to 2020, when the meteorological impacts on O₃ in the whole area became weak.

Seed type and origin-dependent seedling emergence patterns in Danthonia californica, a species commonly used in grassland restoration

Danthonia californica Bolander (Poaceae)is a native perennial bunchgrass commonly used in the restoration of prairie ecosystems in the western United States. Plants of this species simultaneously produce both chasmogamous (potentially outcrossed) and cleistogamous (obligately self-fertilized) seeds. Restoration practitioners almost exclusively use chasmogamous seeds for outplanting, which are predicted to perform better in novel environments due to their greater genetic diversity. Meanwhile, cleistogamous seeds may exhibit greater local adaptation to the conditions in which the maternal plant exists. We performed a common garden experiment at two sites in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, to assess the influence of seed type and source population (eight populations from a latitudinal gradient) on seedling emergence and found no evidence of local adaptation for either seed type. Cleistogamous seeds outperformed chasmogamous seeds, regardless of whether seeds were sourced directly from the common gardens (local seeds) or other populations (nonlocal seeds). Furthermore, average seed weight had a strong positive effect on seedling emergence, despite the fact that chasmogamous seeds had significantly greater mass than cleistogamous seeds. At one common garden, we observed that seeds of both types sourced from north of our planting site performed significantly better than local or southern-sourced seeds. We also found a significant seed type and distance-dependent interaction, with cleistogamous seedling emergence peaking approximately 125 km from the garden. These results suggest that cleistogamous seeds should be considered for greater use in D. californica restoration.

Distant Healing Intention Therapies: An Overview of the Scientific Evidence

This article provides a broad overview of “distant healing intention” (DHI) therapies, ie, intentional healing modalities claimed to transcend the usual constraints of distance through space or time. We provide a summary of previous reviews and meta-analyses that have explored a diverse array of DHI modalities, outcome measures, and experimental protocols. While some significant experimental effects have been observed, the evidence to date does not yet provide confidence in its clinical efficacy. The purported “nonlocal” nature of DHI raises significant methodological and theoretical challenges. We recommend several avenues for improving future research.
