Evaluating Informatics Competencies Requirements for Hospital Nurse Managers in Japan

This study classifies the nursing informatics competency requirements for nurses and healthcare leaders in the United States according to each of the four levels listed in the "Management Ladder for Hospital Nurse Managers (JNA version)" published by the Japanese Nursing Association. Computer skills were included in Level I. Fifteen informatics knowledge items and four informatic competency items that could not be classified for the levels of the management ladder for nurse managers in Japan. This list of nursing informatics competencies, categorized according to the management levels of hospital nurse managers, can be used to provide nursing informatics training to them.

Effect of Transformational Leadership on Nursing Informatics Competency of Chinese Nurses: The Intermediary Function of Innovation Self-Efficacy

Nursing informatics competency has crucial functions in the development of a hospital and patient safety. On the basis of the theory of self-concept, there has been an inadequate study of the influence of transformational leadership on nursing informatics competency mediated by innovation self-efficacy. A descriptive correlational research design was conducted for 586 Chinese nurses from five public hospitals. The measurements were obtained from a questionnaire on transformational leadership, nursing informatics competency, innovation self-efficacy, and a sociodemographic datasheet. We identified a positive correlation between transformational leadership and nursing informatics competency. Innovation self-efficacy had a mediating effect. Managers need to provide measures to shape their transformational leadership style and promote innovation self-efficacy of nurses, which enhances nursing informatics competency of nurses.

Psychometric properties of the self-assessment of nursing informatics competencies scale

The objective of this study was to examine the factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and responsiveness of the Self-Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies Scale (SANICS). Combined BS/MS nursing students (N=336) completed the 93-item scale, which was based upon published and locally-developed nursing informatics competency statements. Exploratory principal component analysis with oblique promax rotation extracted five factors comprising 30 items that explained 63.7% of the variance: clinical informatics role (alpha=.91), basic computer knowledge and skills (alpha=.94), applied computer skills: clinical informatics (alpha=.89), nursing informatics attitudes (alpha=.94), and wireless device skills (alpha=.90). Scale responsiveness was supported by significantly higher factor scores following an informatics course. This study provided preliminary evidence for the factor structure, internal consistency reliability and responsiveness of the 30-item SANICS. Further testing other samples is recommended.
