Task-selective place cells show behaviorally driven dynamics during learning and stability during memory recall

Decades of work propose that hippocampal activity supports internal representation of learned experiences and contexts, allowing individuals to form long-term memories and quickly adapt behavior to changing environments. However, recent studies insinuate hippocampal representations can drift over time, raising the question: how could the hippocampus hold stable memories when activity of its neuronal maps fluctuates? We hypothesized that task-dependent hippocampal maps set by learning rules and structured attention stabilize as a function of behavioral performance. To test this, we imaged hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons during learning and memory recall phases of a new task where mice use odor cues to navigate between two reward zones. Across learning, both orthogonal and overlapping task-dependent place maps form rapidly, discriminating trial context with strong correlation to behavioral performance. Once formed, task-selective place maps show increased long-term stability during memory recall phases. We conclude that memory demand and attention stabilize hippocampal activity to maintain contextually rich spatial representations.

Mikania Micrantha Wilt Virus Alters Insect Vector's Host Preference to Enhance Its Own Spread

As an invasive weed, Mikaniamicrantha Kunth has caused serious damage to natural forest ecosystems in South China in recent years. Mikania micrantha wilt virus (MMWV), an isolate of the Gentian mosaic virus (GeMV), is transmitted by Myzuspersicae (Sulzer) in a non-persistent manner and can effectively inhibit the growth of M. micrantha. To explore the MMWV-M. micrantha-M. persicae interaction and its impact on the invasion of M. micrantha, volatile compounds (VOCs) emitted from healthy, mock-inoculated, and MMWV-infected plants were collected, and effects on host preference of the apterous and alate aphids were assessed with Y-shaped olfactometers. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis indicated that MMWV infection changed the VOC profiles, rendering plants more attractive to aphids. Clip-cages were used to document the population growth rate of M.persicae fed on healthy, mock-inoculated, or MMWV-infected plants. Compared to those reared on healthy plants, the population growth of M. persicae drastically decreased on the MMWV-infected plants. Plant host choice tests based on visual and contact cues were also conducted using alate M.persicae. Interestingly, the initial attractiveness of MMWV-infected plants diminished, and more alate M. persicae moved to healthy plants. Taken together, MMWV appeared to be able to manipulate its plant host to first attract insect vectors to infected plants but then repel viruliferous vectors to promote its own dispersal. Its potential application for invasive weed management is discussed.

Deceptive chemical signals induced by a plant virus attract insect vectors to inferior hosts

Previous studies have shown that vector-borne pathogens can alter the phenotypes of their hosts and vectors in ways that influence the frequency and nature of interactions between them, with significant implications for the transmission and spread of disease. For insect-borne pathogens, host odors are particularly likely targets for manipulation, because both plant- and animal-feeding insects use volatile compounds derived from their hosts as key foraging cues. Here, we document the effects of a widespread plant pathogen, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), on the quality and attractiveness of one of its host plants (Cucurbita pepo cv. Dixie) for two aphid vectors, Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii. Our results indicate that CMV greatly reduces host-plant quality-aphids performed poorly on infected plants and rapidly emigrated from them-but increases the attractiveness of infected plants to aphids by inducing elevated emissions of a plant volatile blend otherwise similar to that emitted by healthy plants. Thus, CMV appears to attract vectors deceptively to infected plants from which they then disperse rapidly, a pattern highly conducive to the nonpersistent transmission mechanism employed by CMV and very different from the pattern previously reported for persistently transmitted viruses that require sustained aphid feeding for transmission. In addition to providing a documented example of a pathogen inducing a deceptive signal of host-plant quality to vectors, our results suggest that the transmission mechanism is a major factor shaping pathogen-induced changes in host-plant phenotypes. Furthermore, our findings yield a general hypothesis that, when vector-borne plant or animal pathogens reduce host quality for vectors, pathogen-induced changes in host phenotypes that enhance vector attraction frequently will involve the exaggeration of existing host-location cues.
