Carbon Nanofibrous Aerogels Derived from Electrospun Polyimide for Multifunctional Piezoresistive Sensors

The fabrication of carbon aerogels with ultralow density, high electrical conductivity, and ultraelasticity still remains substantial challenges. This study utilizes electrospun polyimide aerogel as the source to fabricate flexible carbon nanofibrous aerogel (PI-CNA) capable of multifunctional applications. The lightweight PI-CNA based piezoresistive sensor shows a wide linear range (0-217 kPa), rapid response/recovery time, and fatigue resistance (12,000 cycles). More importantly, the superior pressure sensing enables the PI-CNA for all-range healthcare sensing, including pulse monitoring, physiological activity detection, speech recognition, and gait recognition. Moreover, the EMI SE and the A coefficient of the PI-CNA reach 45 dB and 0.62, respectively, indicating the outstanding absorption dominated EMI shielding effects due to the multiple reflections and absorption. Furthermore, PI-CNA exhibits satisfying Joule heating performance up to 120 °C with rapid response time (10-30 s) under low supply voltages (1.5-5 V) and possesses sufficient heating reliability and repeatability in long-term repeated heating/cooling cycles. The fabricated PI-CNA shows significant potential applications in wearable technologies, energy conversion, electronic skin, and artificial intelligence.

Electrospun Wrinkled Porous Polyimide Nanofiber-Based Filter via Thermally Induced Phase Separation for Efficient High-Temperature PMs Capture

Benefiting from its superior thermal stability, polyimide (PI) fiber-based composites have attracted wide attention in the field of high-temperature filtration and separation. However, the trade-off between filtration efficiency and pressure drop of traditional PI filters with single morphology and structure still remains challenging. Herein, the electrospun PI high-temperature-resistant air filter was fabricated via thermal-induced phase separation (TIPS), employing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a template. The PI nanofibers exhibited special wrinkled porous structure, and the filter possessed a high specific surface area of 304.77 m²/g. The removal of PAN changed the chemical composition of the fiber and induced PI molecules to form complex folds on the surface of the fiber, thus forming the wrinkled porous structure. Additionally, the wrinkled porous PI nanofiber filter displayed a high PM0.3 removal efficiency of 99.99% with a low pressure drop of 43.35 Pa at room temperature, and the filtration efficiency was still over 97% after being used for long time. Moreover, the efficiency of the filter could even reach 95.55% at a high temperature of 280 °C. The excellent filtration performance was attributed to the special wrinkled porous surface, which could limit the Brownian motion of PMs and reinforce the mechanical interception effect to capture the particulate matters (PMs) on the surface of the filter. Therefore, this work provided a novel strategy for the fabrication of filters with special morphology to cope with increasingly serious air pollution in the industrial field.

Triboelectric Nanogenerator Enhanced Nanofiber Air Filters for Efficient Particulate Matter Removal

We developed a high-efficiency rotating triboelectric nanogenerator (R-TENG) enhanced polyimide (PI) nanofiber air filter for particulate matter (PM) removal in ambient atmosphere. The PI electrospinning nanofiber film exhibited high removal efficiency for the PM particles that have diameters larger than 0.5 μm. When the R-TENG is connected, the removal efficiency of the filter is enhanced, especially when the particle diameters of the PM are smaller than 100 nm. The highest removal efficiency is 90.6% for particles with a diameter of 33.4 nm and the highest efficiency enhancement reaches 207.8% at the diameter of 76.4 nm where the removal efficiency enhanced from 27.1% to 83.6%. This technology with zero ozone release and low pressure drop offers an approach for air cleaning and haze treatment.
