Using Panel Vendors for Recruitment Into a Web-Based Family Prevention Program: Methodological Considerations

Use of online panel vendors in research has grown over the past decade. Panel vendors are organizations that recruit participants into a panel to take part in web-based surveys and match panelists to a target audience for data collection. We used two panel vendors to recruit families ( N = 411) with a 16- to 17-year-old teen to participate in a randomized control trial (RCT) of an online family-based program to prevent underage drinking and risky sexual behaviors. Our article addresses the following research questions: (1) How well do panel vendors provide a sample of families who meet our inclusion criteria to participate in a RCT? (2) How well do panel vendors provide a sample of families who reflect the characteristics of the general population? and (3) Does the choice of vendor influence the characteristics of families that we engage in research? Despite the screening techniques used by the panel vendors to identify families who met our inclusion criteria, 23.8% were found ineligible when research staff verified their eligibility by direct telephone contact. Compared to the general U.S. population, our sample had more Whites and more families with higher education levels. Finally, across the two panel vendors, there were no significant differences in the characteristics of families, except for mean age. The online environment provides opportunities for new methods to recruit participants in research studies. However, innovative recruitment methods need careful study to ensure the quality of their samples.

A Systematic Review of Psychological Studies Applied to Futsal

This study presents a systematic review of psychological studies applied to futsal. A total of 23 studies were analyzed within five sections: a year overview and the name of journals, research designs, data collection, sample characteristics, and a focus category. This study found that the first psychological articles that were applied to futsal were published in 2008, and the number of publications gradually increased since then. The majority of examined studies were cross-sectional designs and conducted at the elite level in European and Asian countries. Most studies did not use mixed methods and did not specify the age of the subjects. Psychological research applied to futsal focused on athletes, non-athletes and several psychological factors. Critical and innovative reflections were made to highlight research gaps and present suggestions for further research.

Challenges in Using the Randomized Trial Design to Examine the Influence of Treatment Preferences

The overall purpose of this methodological study was to investigate the strengths and limitations of the randomized clinical trial design in examining the influence of treatment preferences on outcomes. The study was a secondary analysis of data obtained in two randomized clinical trials that evaluated behavioral therapies for insomnia. In both trials, the same design and methods were used to assess participants' treatment preferences and outcomes, however, the treatments differed. The results illustrated the challenges encountered in using the randomized clinical trial design. The challenges were related to the unbalanced distribution of participants with preferences for the study treatments, non-comparability of the subgroups with treatments matched or mismatched to their preferences, differential attrition, which compromised the sample size and composition of the subgroups and limited the use of the planned statistical analyses. Whether these challenges occur in trials of other types of treatments and target populations should be explored in future research. Some strategies were proposed and should be evaluated for their utility in addressing these challenges.

Prevalence of Childhood Sexual Abuse among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual People: A Meta-Analysis

In order to determine the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals, we conducted a meta-analysis that compiled the results of 65 articles across 9 countries. The results revealed no significant difference in the prevalence of child sexual abuse between homosexual and bisexual people for both sexes. The prevalence of child sexual abuse among female sexual minorities was significantly higher than that among male sexual minorities. The lowest prevalence was found in South America, followed by Asia. The definition of child sexual abuse, dimension used to measure sexual orientation, year of data collection, and the mean age of participants at the time of assessment influenced the estimated prevalence of child sexual abuse. We conclude that many variables influence the reported prevalence of child sexual abuse among sexual minorities.

Errors in Spectrophotometry and Calibration Procedures to Avoid Them

Based on simple principles, spectrophotometry nevertheless demands a lot of precautions to avoid errors. The following properties of spectrophotometers will be discussed together with methods to test them: Spectral properties-wavelength accuracy, bandwidth, stray light; photometric linearity; interactions between sample and instrument-multiple reflections, polarization, divergence, sample wedge, sample tilt, optical path length (refractive index), interferences. Calibration of master instruments is feasible only by complicated procedures. With such a master instrument standards may be calibrated which greatly simplify performance checks of instruments used for practical work. For testing high quality spectrophotometers the use of emission lines and nearly neutral absorbing solid filters as standards seems to be superior, for some kinds of routine instruments the use of absorption bands and liquid filters may be necessary.
