Abstract
Adaptive radiation of archosaurs, represented by crocodilians, non-avian dinosaurs, and birds, since the Mesozoic has been studied mainly based on their major skeletal elements (skull, vertebrae, and limbs). However, little is known about the evolution of their hyolaryngeal apparatus, which is involved with feeding, respiration, and vocalization, because of poor fossil preservation and the difficulty in determining the musculoskeletal homology of the apparatus. Network analysis is a framework to quantitatively characterize the topological organization of anatomical structures for comparing structural integration and modularity regardless of ambiguous homology. Herein, we modeled the musculoskeletal system of hyolarynx in six species of extant archosaurs and its sister-taxon turtle, and conducted a network analysis using network parameters, modular partition, and bone centrality in a phylogenetic framework. The network parameters reveal that ancestral archosaurs have reduced the numbers of elements and links and acquired complex networks as a whole domain with strong modularity in the hyolarynx. Furthermore, the modular partition and centrality reveal that the hyoids are highly evolvable, while the larynx is constrained and less evolvable. The archosaur hyolarynx exhibits different evolutionary trends: crocodilians with the system integration, basihyal simplification, and ceratobranchial centralization; and birds with the simplicity, weak integration, and modularity of the hyolarynx, laryngeal integration with cricoid centrality, and tongue-module expansion with the acquisition of paraglossal. Four hyolaryngeal bones (ceratobranchial, basihyal, paraglossal, and cricoid) have played important roles in archosaur evolution, and their fossil records are keys to understanding the two major archosaur lineages toward crocodilians and birds.

Abstract
Introduction Scrub typhus is one of the most underreported and fatal illnesses accounting for 23% of all febrile illness. Rajasthan reported cases during 2018-2019 in state reporting system but did not report any case to central Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) unit. We evaluated the Scrub typhus surveillance system in Alwar district, Rajasthan, with the objective of describing and evaluating the system and providing evidence-based recommendations to identify gaps. Material and Methods In cross-sectional study, we reviewed records and conducted key informant interviews at district- and block-level health facilities. Using US Centers for Disease Control guidelines, we evaluated the system by framing indicators for selected attributes for a defined reference period. Overall performance was ranked as outstanding (90-100%), excellent (80-89%), very good (70-79%), good (60-69%), and poor (<60%). Results Line list of confirmed cases was sent from district to block level for additional active case search (ACS) to implement control measures. We conducted 26 key informant interviews and reviewed records and calculated simplicity as 79%, flexibility 100%, data quality 46%, acceptability 92%, representativeness 48%, timeliness 43%, and stability 79%. Conclusions Epidemiological surveillance (active and passive) is a core intervention under scrub typhus surveillance system. Lab reports were incompletely uploaded on IDSP portal. Surveillance reports should be updated after each ACS. Reporting format under IDSP should be uploaded timely, and lab reports from state should be sent within 48 hours of diagnosis so that case investigation is not delayed.

Abstract
We report the first case in the literature of acute hydrocephalus due to a simultaneous diagnosis of bacterial (not asceptic) meningitis and a colloid cyst. Diagnosing disease is the cornerstone skill of a medical practitioner. Both education and experience allow for sharpening of this skill throughout years of medical practice. Disease is fraught with nuances and inconsistencies which can render an accurate diagnosis a difficult task. Medical practitioners can be guilty of cognitive biases such as Ockham's razor. We present the case of a patient with an initial diagnosis of obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a colloid cyst. However, pneumococcal meningitis blunted Ockham's razor in favour of Hickam's dictum.

Abstract
While the languages of the world vary greatly, they exhibit systematic patterns, as well. Semantic universals are restrictions on the variation in meaning exhibit cross-linguistically (e.g., that, in all languages, expressions of a certain type can only denote meanings with a certain special property). This paper pursues an efficient communication analysis to explain the presence of semantic universals in a domain of function words: quantifiers. Two experiments measure how well languages do in optimally trading off between competing pressures of simplicity and informativeness. First, we show that artificial languages which more closely resemble natural languages are more optimal. Then, we introduce information-theoretic measures of degrees of semantic universals and show that these are not correlated with optimality in a random sample of artificial languages. These results suggest both that efficient communication shapes semantic typology in both content and function word domains, as well as that semantic universals may not stand in need of independent explanation.

Abstract
This study investigates the hypothesis that tone alternation directionality becomes a basis of structural bias for tone alternation learning, where “structural bias” refers to a tendency to prefer uni-directional tone deletions to bi-directional ones. Two experiments were conducted. In the first, Mandarin speakers learned three artificial languages, with bi-directional tone deletions, uni-directional, left-dominant deletions, and uni-directional, right-dominant deletions, respectively. The results showed a learning bias toward uni-directional, right-dominant patterns. As Mandarin tone sandhi is right-dominant while Cantonese tone change is lexically restricted and does not have directionality asymmetry, a follow-up experiment trained Cantonese speakers either on left- or right-dominant deletions to see whether the right-dominant preference was due to L1 transfer from Mandarin. The results of the experiment also showed a learning bias toward right-dominant patterns. We argue that structural simplicity affects tone deletion learning but the simplicity should be grounded on phonetics factors, such as syllables’ contour-tone bearing ability. The experimental results are consistent with the findings of a survey on other types of tone alternation’s directionality, i.e., tone sandhi across 17 Chinese varieties. This suggests that the directionality asymmetry found across different tone alternations reflects a phonetically grounded structural learning bias.

Abstract
PURPOSE The abdominal procedure of ventriculoperitoneal or lumboperitoneal shunt is difficult because of a deep and narrow operative view, especially for obese patients. We have developed the 'Hoisting method,' which enables us to make abdominal procedures easy and safe. MATERIAL AND METHODS We report our experience with five cases between April 2020 and March 2021. RESULTS The placement of the shunt was easy and safe in all patients without any complications. CONCLUSION The shunt method is very effective and easy without requiring additional devices.

Abstract
In this study, a one-step isothermal method combining polymerase spiral reaction (PSR) with reverse transcription (RT-PSR) was established for rapid and specific detection of novel astroviruses causing fatal gout in goslings (N-GoAstV). The one-step RT-PSR was accomplished at the optimal temperature of 62°C and time of 40 min and used primers simply designed as conventional PCR primers, and the results of detection were visible to the naked eye. The detection limit of PSR was above 34.7 copies/μL at a 95% probability level according to probit regression analysis. The assay specifically detected N-GoAstV, and no other reference viruses were detected. These results suggest that the newly established RT-PSR assay could, in one step, accomplish reverse-transcription, amplification, and result determination providing a visible, convenient, rapid, and cost-effective test that can be carried out onsite, in order to ensure timely quarantine of N-GoAstV-infected birds, leading to effective disease control.

Abstract
Recent work in cognitive science has uncovered a diversity of explanatory values, or dimensions along which we judge explanations as better or worse. We propose a Bayesian account of these values that clarifies their function and shows how they fit together to guide explanation-making. The resulting taxonomy shows that core values from psychology, statistics, and the philosophy of science emerge from a common mathematical framework and provide insight into why people adopt the explanations they do. This framework not only operationalizes the explanatory virtues associated with, for example, scientific argument-making, but also enables us to reinterpret the explanatory vices that drive phenomena such as conspiracy theories, delusions, and extremist ideologies.

Abstract
With increasing complications of canine parvovirus infection cases, disease diagnosis and treatment have become more difficult. In this study, specificity primers for the conserved region of the VP2 gene of canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) were synthesized and evaluated. An improved polymerase cross-linking spiral reaction (PCLSR) method for early and rapid diagnosis of CPV-2 was established. The results showed that the amplification reaction was optimal when run at 62°C for 50 min and could be used to detect CPV-2 without any cross-reactions with other pathogens of canine infectious diseases. Reaction results were directly judged by the naked eyes, with the positive amplification tube shown as luminous yellow and the negative tube as bright purple. Compared with the previously reported polymerase spiral reaction (PSR) method for CPV-2 detection, this reaction was performed using improved primer pairs and a better dye identification method (using an indicator comprising phenol red and cresol red). The detection limit of PCLSR was 3.9 × 101 copies using gel electrophoresis or a visible dye. The positive rate of 132 clinical samples was 42.42%, which was identically the same as that of the PSR method and slightly higher than that of the colloidal gold strip method (39.39%). The newly developed CPV-PCLSR assay shows the advantage of rapid visualization of results and offers a convenient and rapid method for early CPV-2 diagnosis with higher sensitivity and specificity than the established methods.

Abstract
Point-of-care testing promises laboratory-based precision in settings that do not have easy access to laboratories or where processing tests takes too long or is too costly. Developers and global health actors stress values and norms such as simplicity, rapidity and accuracy for realizing diagnostic innovations that work at point of care and are aligned to the specific requirements of point-of-care settings. This paper uses fieldwork among diagnostic manufacturers, scientists, donors, members of civil society, industry consultants, international organizations, regulators, policymakers, programme officers, lab technicians, and clinicians involved in development and implementation of tuberculosis and HIV diagnostics, to examine how norms and values of what constitutes a good point-of-care diagnostic are operating in practice through both top-down and bottom-up dynamics. It draws the link between design, evidence and adoption of diagnostics and how the different actors interpret the values underpinning the new practice. The analysis draws on literature on valuation practices, evidence-making and technology design in science and technology studies and medical sociology. The findings reveal how these values constitute innovation, implementation, and evaluation practices across global and local (India) sites, with important consequences for funding of health infrastructure, capacity, and training resources for addressing some of the existing structural inequalities. Dominant values currently defining point of care diagnostics risk exacerbating health inequalities between those who do and do not have the necessary social and financial resources to access better equipped and functioning healthcare facilities, especially in resource constrained settings.

Abstract
In this study, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) was used to establish a rapid, specific, and visual detection method for duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV). The design and synthesis of 4 specific LAMP primers were based on the conserved gene region of the DHBV genome, and the optimum temperature and time of the LAMP reaction were 63°C and 50 min, respectively. The LAMP assay was confirmed to be specific for DHBV detection and had the same sensitivity as the quantitative PCR assay. A visual detection method for rapid determination of results was developed using a color indicator containing phenol red and cresol red. A color change was produced based on a pH change in the reaction system, indicating a positive reaction. For the detection of samples from ducks and geese, the LAMP method has the advantages of simplicity, high sensitivity and specificity, good visibility, and low cost. Moreover, it is more practical and convenient than PCR-related assays for the clinical detection of DHBV.

Abstract
A reagentless and single-step electrochemical aptasensor with separation-free fashion and rapid response is developed for the Hg2+ assay in dairy products. Herein, the sensing strategy is established on Hg2+-induced structural transition of the methylene-blue-tagged single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) from a flexible manner to rigid hairpin-shaped double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), generating an improved peak current for the Hg2+ assay with a detection limit of 0.62 fM. Importantly, the best signal-to-noise ratio value can be obtained by exploiting Au flowers as sensing material and the optimal ssDNA concentration. The proposed sensor also exhibits high selectivity as a result of the specific thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) coordination chemistry and can be applied to detect Hg2+ in dairy products. With the use of the electric "signal-on" switch, the electrochemical aptasensor has the advantages of simplicity, ease of operation, and high sensitivity and specificity, offering a promising method to assess the safety of dairy products polluted with Hg2+.

Abstract
Algorithm development in digital medicine necessitates ongoing knowledge and skills updating to match the current demands and constant progression in the field. In today’s chaotic world there is an increasing trend to seek out simple solutions for complex problems that can increase efficiency, reduce resource consumption, and improve scalability. This desire has spilled over into the world of science and research where many disciplines have taken to investigating and applying more simplistic approaches. Interestingly, through a review of current literature and research efforts, it seems that the learning and teaching principles in digital medicine continue to push towards the development of sophisticated algorithms with a limited scope and has not fully embraced or encouraged a shift towards more simple solutions that yield equal or better results. This short note aims to demonstrate that within the world of digital medicine and engineering, simpler algorithms can offer effective and efficient solutions, where traditionally more complex algorithms have been used. Moreover, the note demonstrates that bridging different research disciplines is very beneficial and yields valuable insights and results.

Abstract
Behavioural flexibility is often treated as the gold standard of evidence for more sophisticated or complex forms of animal cognition, such as planning, metacognition and mindreading. However, the evidential link between behavioural flexibility and complex cognition has not been explicitly or systematically defended. Such a defence is particularly pressing because observed flexible behaviours can frequently be explained by putatively simpler cognitive mechanisms. This leaves complex cognition hypotheses open to 'deflationary' challenges that are accorded greater evidential weight precisely because they offer putatively simpler explanations of equal explanatory power. This paper challenges the blanket preference for simpler explanations, and shows that once this preference is dispensed with, and the full spectrum of evidence-including evolutionary, ecological and phylogenetic data-is accorded its proper weight, an argument in support of the prevailing assumption that behavioural flexibility can serve as evidence for complex cognitive mechanisms may begin to take shape. An adaptive model of cognitive-behavioural evolution is proposed, according to which the existence of convergent trait-environment clusters in phylogenetically disparate lineages may serve as evidence for the same trait-environment clusters in other lineages. This, in turn, could permit inferences of cognitive complexity in cases of experimental underdetermination, thereby placing the common view that behavioural flexibility can serve as evidence for complex cognition on firmer grounds.

Abstract
Materials scientists and engineers desire to have an impact. In this Progress Report we postulate a close correlation between impact - whether academic, technological, or scientific - and simple solutions, here defined as solutions that are inexpensive, reliable, predictable, highly performing, "stackable" (i.e., they can be combined and compounded with little increase in complexity), and "hackable" (i.e., they can be easily modified and optimized). In light of examples and our own experience, we propose how impact can be pursued systematically in materials research through a simplicity-driven approach to discovery-driven or problem-driven research.

Abstract
Proper design has become a critical element needed to engage website and mobile application users. However, little research has been conducted to define the specific elements used in effective website and mobile application design. We attempt to review and consolidate research on effective design and to define a short list of elements frequently used in research. The design elements mentioned most frequently in the reviewed literature were navigation, graphical representation, organization, content utility, purpose, simplicity, and readability. We discuss how previous studies define and evaluate these seven elements. This review and the resulting short list of design elements may be used to help designers and researchers to operationalize best practices for facilitating and predicting user engagement.

BACKGROUND Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain is considered to be the third most common cause of low back pain with the prevalence of 13-25% in all low back pain patients. Its diagnosis and treatment remain a challenge with the poor evidence base for interventional procedures. Patients with SIJ pain experience a low quality of life, worse than some of the chronic health conditions. Simplicity radiofrequency (RF) neurotomy is a novel technique which tackles some of the problems faced by conventional RF neurotomy and may offer better results in managing pain arising from SIJ. AIM The purpose of this retrospective review of practice was to look into the effectiveness of Simplicity RF neurotomy in terms of pain relief, quality of health improvement in patients suffering from SIJ pain and complications associated with the procedure. METHODOLOGY Retrospective review of the patients undergoing Simplicity RF neurotomy at a tertiary hospital (April 2012 to June 2013). Pain scores and responses to SF (Short Form) 12 questionnaire before and at 12 months after treatment were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS Out of 26 patients, 16 were considered for analysis. There was statistically significant reduction in both mean pain score (Numerical Rating Scale, NRS from 8.8 pre-intervention to 4.3 post-intervention) and median pain score (NRS from 9 pre-intervention to 5 post-intervention) with a p-value of <0.001 at 12 months. Reduction in the inter-quartile range of pain score was observed from 8-10 to 2.25-6 (p-value of <0.001). Global health as per SF12 scores showed statistically significant improvement, except in some of the psychological subcategories. The procedure-related pain was the only complication noted. CONCLUSION From our data, we can conclude that Simplicity RF neurotomy of lateral branches of S1-S3 along with conventional RF denervation of L5 dorsal ramus may improve pain scores and many components of global health in carefully selected patients.

Abstract
The extent to which the linguistic system-its architecture, the representations it operates on, the constraints it is subject to-is specific to language has broad implications for cognitive science and its relation to evolutionary biology. Importantly, a given property of the linguistic system can be "specific" to the domain of language in several ways. For example, if the property evolved by natural selection under the pressure of the linguistic function it serves then the property is domain-specific in the sense that its design is tailored for language. Equally though, if that property evolved to serve a different function or if that property is domain-general, it may nevertheless interact with the linguistic system in a way that is unique. This gives a second sense in which a property can be thought of as specific to language. An evolutionary approach to the language faculty might at first blush appear to favor domain-specificity in the first sense, with individual properties of the language faculty being specifically linguistic adaptations. However, we argue that interactions between learning, culture, and biological evolution mean any domain-specific adaptations that evolve will take the form of weak biases rather than hard constraints. Turning to the latter sense of domain-specificity, we highlight a very general bias, simplicity, which operates widely in cognition and yet interacts with linguistic representations in domain-specific ways.

Abstract
Theoretical models of unsupervised category learning postulate that humans "invent" categories to accommodate new patterns, but tend to group stimuli into a small number of categories. This "Occam's razor" principle is motivated by normative rules of statistical inference. If categories influence perception, then one should find effects of category invention on simple perceptual estimation. In a series of experiments, we tested this prediction by asking participants to estimate the number of colored circles on a computer screen, with the number of circles drawn from a color-specific distribution. When the distributions associated with each color overlapped substantially, participants' estimates were biased toward values intermediate between the two means, indicating that subjects ignored the color of the circles and grouped different-colored stimuli into one perceptual category. These data suggest that humans favor simpler explanations of sensory inputs. In contrast, when the distributions associated with each color overlapped minimally, the bias was reduced (i.e., the estimates for each color were closer to the true means), indicating that sensory evidence for more complex explanations can override the simplicity bias. We present a rational analysis of our task, showing how these qualitative patterns can arise from Bayesian computations.
