Electron Density and Its Relation with Electronic and Optical Properties in 2D Mo/W Dichalcogenides

Two-dimensional MX₂ (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te) homo- and heterostructures have attracted extensive attention in electronics and optoelectronics due to their unique structures and properties. In this work, the layer-dependent electronic and optical properties have been studied by varying layer thickness and stacking order. Based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, topological analyses on interatomic interactions of layered MX₂ and WX₂/MoX₂, including bond degree (BD), bond length (BL), and bond angle (BA), have been detailed to probe structure-property relationships. Results show that M-X and X-X bonds are strengthened and weakened in layered MX₂ compared to the counterparts in bulks. X-X and M-Se/Te are weakened at compressive strain while strengthened at tensile strain and are more responsive to the former than the latter. Discordant BD variation of individual parts of WX₂/MoX₂ accounts for exclusively distributed electrons and holes, yielding type-II band offsets. X-X BL correlates positively to binding energy (E_b), while X-X BA correlates negatively to lattice mismatch (lm). The resulting interlayer distance limitation evidences constraint-free lattice of vdW structure. Finally, the connection between microscopic interatomic interaction and macroscopic electromagnetic behavior has been quantified firstly by a cubic equation relating to weighted BD summation and static dielectric constant.

Thermoelectric Properties of Sb-S System Compounds from DFT Calculations

By combining density functional theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules and transport properties calculations, we evaluated the thermoelectric properties of Sb-S system compounds and shed light on their relationships with electronic structures. The results show that, for Sb2S3, the large density of states (DOS) variation induces a large Seebeck coefficient. Taking into account the long-range weak bonds distribution, Sb2S3 should exhibit low lattice thermal conductivity. Therefore, Sb2S3 is promising for thermoelectric applications. The insertion of Be atoms into the Sb2S3 interstitial sites demonstrates the electrical properties and Seebeck coefficient anisotropy and sheds light on the understanding of the role of quasi-one-dimensional structure in the electron transport. The large interstitial sites existing in SbS2 are at the origin of phonons anharmonicity which counteracts the thermal transport. The introduction of Zn and Ga atoms into these interstitial sites could result in an enhancement of all the thermoelectric properties.

Strong Lewis Base Ga4B2O9: Ga-O Connectivity Enhanced Basicity and Its Applications in the Strecker Reaction and Catalytic Conversion of n-Propanol

Heterogeneous solid base catalysis is valuable and promising in chemical industry, however it is insufficiently developed compared to solid acid catalysis due to the lack of satisfied solid base catalysts. To gain the strong basicity, the previous strategy was to basify oxides with alkaline metals to create surficial vacancies or defects, which suffers from the instability under catalytic conditions. Monocomponent basic oxides like MgO are literally stable but deficient in electron-withdrawing ability. Here we prove that a special connectivity of atoms could enhance the Lewis basicity of oxygen in monocomponent solids exemplified by Ga₄B₂O₉. The structure-induced basicity is from the μ₃-O linked exclusively to five-coordinated Ga³⁺. Ga₄B₂O₉ behaved as a durable catalyst with a high yield of 81% in the base-catalyzed synthesis of α-aminonitriles by Strecker reaction. In addition, several monocomponent solid bases were evaluated in the Strecker reaction, and Ga₄B₂O₉ has the largest amount of strong base centers (23.1 μmol/g) and the highest catalytic efficiency. Ga₄B₂O₉ is also applicable in high-temperature solid-gas catalysis, for example, Ga₄B₂O₉ catalyzed efficiently the dehydrogenation of n-propanol, resulting in a high selectivity to propanal (79%). In contrast, the comparison gallium borate, Ga-PKU-1, which is a Brönsted acid, preferred to catalyze the dehydration process to obtain propylene with a selectivity of 94%.

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of co-polyamides with anthrazoline-containing units in the main chain

A series of anthrazoline-containing monomers are synthesized, and eight co-polyamides of different chemical structures, containing 1,9-anthrazoline fragments in the main chain, are obtained and investigated. Photoluminescent, stress-strain, and thermal properties of these polymers are studied. It is shown that polymers with fragments of 4,4'-(pyrido[3,2-g]-quinoline-2,8-diyl)dianiline and 4,4'-(10-methylpyrido[3,2-g]quinoline-2,8-diyl)dianiline possess an intense luminescence in the range 550-650 nm. The performed investigations made it possible to determine the effect of substituents of various natures in the anthrazoline cycle and the position of amide group (meta- and para-configurations) on optical, stress-strain, and thermal properties of copolymers, opening up a prospect for further developments of principles of design of polymers with optimal characteristics.
