Recent Advances of CeO2-Based Composite Materials for Photocatalytic Applications

Photocatalysis has the advantages of practical, sustainable and environmental protection, so it plays a significant role in energy transformation and environmental utilization. CeO2 has attracted widespread attention for its unique 4 f electrons, rich defect structures, high oxygen storage capacity and great chemical stability. In this paper, we review the structure of CeO2 and the common methods for the preparation of CeO2-based composites in the first part. In particular, we highlight the co-precipitation method, template method, and sol-gel method methods. Then, in the second part, we introduce the application of CeO2-based composites in photocatalysis, including photocatalytic CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, degradation, selective organic reaction, and photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. In addition, we discuss several modification techniques to improve the photocatalytic performance of CeO2-based composites, such as elemental doping, defect engineering, constructing heterojunction and morphology regulation. Finally, the challenges faced by CeO2-based composites are analyzed and their development prospects are prospected. This review provides a systematic summary of the recent advance of CeO2-based composites in the field of photocatalysis, which can provide useful references for the rational design of efficient CeO2-based composite photocatalysts for sustainable development.

Co-based Nanozymatic Profiling: Advances Spanning Chemistry, Biomedical, and Environmental Sciences

Nanozymes, next-generation enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials, have entered an era of rational design; among them, Co-based nanozymes have emerged as captivating players over times. Co-based nanozymes have been developed and have garnered significant attention over the past five years. Their extraordinary properties, including regulatable enzymatic activity, stability, and multifunctionality stemming from magnetic properties, photothermal conversion effects, cavitation effects, and relaxation efficiency, have made Co-based nanozymes a rising star. This review presents the first comprehensive profiling of the Co-based nanozymes in the chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences. The review begins by scrutinizing the various synthetic methods employed for Co-based nanozyme fabrication, such as template and sol-gel methods, highlighting their distinctive merits from a chemical standpoint. Furthermore, a detailed exploration of their wide-ranging applications in biosensing and biomedical therapeutics, as well as their contributions to environmental monitoring and remediation is provided. Notably, drawing inspiration from state-of-the-art techniques such as omics, a comprehensive analysis of Co-based nanozymes is undertaken, employing analogous statistical methodologies to provide valuable guidance. To conclude, a comprehensive outlook on the challenges and prospects for Co-based nanozymes is presented, spanning from microscopic physicochemical mechanisms to macroscopic clinical translational applications.

Functional MXenes: Progress and Perspectives on Synthetic Strategies and Structure-Property Interplay for Next-Generation Technologies

MXenes are a class of 2D materials that include layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Since their inception in 2011, they have garnered significant attention due to their diverse compositions, unique structures, and extraordinary properties, such as high specific surface areas and excellent electrical conductivity. This versatility has opened up immense potential in various fields, catalyzing a surge in MXene research and leading to note worthy advancements. This review offers an in-depth overview of the evolution of MXenes over the past 5 years, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and technological prospects. A classification scheme for MXene structures based on entropy is presented and an updated summary of the elemental constituents of the MXene family is provided, as documented in recent literature. Delving into the microscopic structure and synthesis routes, the intricate structure-property relationships are explored at the nano/micro level that dictate the macroscopic applications of MXenes. Through an extensive review of the latest representative works, the utilization of MXenes in energy, environmental, electronic, and biomedical fields is showcased, offering a glimpse into the current technological bottlenecks, such asstability, scalability, and device integration. Moreover, potential pathways for advancing MXenes toward next-generation technologies are highlighted.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Nanoarrays for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

The development of highly active and stable electrode materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the widespread application of electrochemical energy conversion systems. In recent years, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with self-supporting array structures have been extensively studied because of their high porosity, abundant metal sites, and flexible and adjustable structures. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in the design, preparation, and applications of MOF-based nanoarrays for the OER, beginning with the introduction of the architectural advantages of the nanoarrays and the characteristics of MOFs. Subsequently, the design principles of robust and efficient MOF-based nanoarrays as OER electrodes are highlighted. Furthermore, detailed discussions focus on the composition, structure, and performance of pristine MOF nanoarrays (MOFNAs) and MOF-based composite nanoarrays. On the one hand, the effects of the two components of MOFs and several modification methods are discussed in detail for MOFNAs. On the other hand, the review emphasizes the use of MOF-based composite nanoarrays composed of MOFs and other nanomaterials, such as oxides, hydroxides, oxyhydroxides, chalcogenides, MOFs, and metal nanoparticles, to guide the rational design of efficient OER electrodes. Finally, perspectives on current challenges, opportunities, and future directions in this research field are provided.

Synthesis Strategies, Optical Mechanisms, and Applications of Dual-Emissive Carbon Dots

Tuning the optical properties of carbon dots (CDs) and figuring out the mechanisms underneath the emissive phenomena have been one of the most cutting-edge topics in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials. Dual-emissive CDs possess the intrinsic dual-emission character upon single-wavelength excitation, which significantly benefits their multi-purpose applications. Explosive exploitations of dual-emissive CDs have been reported during the past five years. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a systematic summary of the rising star nanomaterial. In this review, we summarize the synthesis strategies and optical mechanisms of the dual-emissive CDs. The applications in the areas of biosensing, bioimaging, as well as photoelectronic devices are also outlined. The last section presents the main challenges and perspectives in further promoting the development of dual-emissive CDs. By covering the most vital publications, we anticipate that the review is of referential significance for researchers in the synthesis, characterization, and application of dual-emissive CDs.

Metallic Copper-Containing Composite Photocatalysts: Fundamental, Materials Design, and Photoredox Applications

Semiconductor photocatalysis has long been regarded as a potential solution to tackle the energy and environmental challenges since the first discovery of water splitting by TiO₂ almost 50 years ago. The past few years have seen a tremendous flurry of research interest in the modification of semiconductors because of their shortcomings in the aspects of solar harvesting, electron-hole pairs separation, and utilization of photogenerated carriers. Among the various strategies, the introduction of metallic copper into the photocatalysis system can not only enhance the absorption of sunlight and the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes, but also increase the adsorption ability of substrate and the number of active sites, so as to realize the high solar to chemical energy conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the rational design of copper-based composites and their applications in photoredox catalysis. First, the preparation methods of metallic copper-containing composites are discussed. Then, the applications of different types of copper-based composites in the photocatalytic removal of pollutants, splitting of water to hydrogen production, reduction of carbon dioxide, and conversion of organic matter are introduced. Finally, the opportunities and challenges in the design and synthesis of copper-based composites and their applications in the photocatalysis are prospected.

Porous Noble Metal Electrocatalysts: Synthesis, Performance, and Development

Active sites (intrinsic activity, quantity, and distribution), electron transfer, and mass diffusion are three important factors affecting the performance of electrocatalysts. Composed of highly active components which are built into various network structures, porous noble metal is an inherently promising electrocatalysts. In recent years, great efforts have been made to explore new efficient synthesis methods and establish structural-performance relationships in the field of porous noble metal electrocatalysis. In this review, the very recent progress in strategies for preparing porous noble metal, including innovation and deeper understanding of traditional methods is summarized. A discussion of relationship between porous noble metal structure and electrocatalytic performance, such as accessibility of active sites, connectivity of skeleton structures, channels dimensions, and hierarchical structures, is provided.

Carbon Nanomaterials With Hollow Structures: A Mini-Review

Carbon nanomaterials with high electrical conductivity, good chemical, and mechanical stability have attracted increasing attentions and shown wide applications in recent years. In particularly, hollow carbon nanomaterials, which possess ultrahigh specific surface area, large surface-to-volume ratios, and controllable pore size distribution, will benefit to provide abundant active sites, and mass loading vacancy, accelerate electron/ion transfer as well as contribute to the specific density of energy storage systems. In this mini-review, we summarize the recent progresses of hollow carbon nanomaterials by focusing on the synthesis approaches and corresponding nanostructures, including template-free and hard-template carbon hollow structures, metal organic framework-based hollow carbon structures, bowl-like and cage-like structures, as well as hollow fibers. The design and synthesis strategies of these hollow carbon nanomaterials have been systematically discussed. Finally, the emerging challenges and future prospective for developing advanced hollow carbon structures were outlined.

High-Performance-Based Perovskite-Supported Nanocomposite for the Development of Green Energy Device Applications: An Overview

Perovskite-based electrode catalysts are the most promising potential candidate that could bring about remarkable scientific advances in widespread renewable energy-storage devices, especially supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells, and solar-cell applications. This review demonstrated that perovskite composites are used as advanced electrode materials for efficient energy-storage-device development with different working principles and various available electrochemical technologies. Research efforts on increasing energy-storage efficiency, a wide range of electro-active constituents, and a longer lifetime of the various perovskite materials are discussed in this review. Furthermore, this review describes the prospects, widespread available materials, properties, synthesis strategies, uses of perovskite-supported materials, and our views on future perspectives of high-performance, next-generation sustainable-energy technology.

Recent Progress of Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthesis and Battery Applications

As one type of promising inorganic-organic hybrid crystal material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread attention in many potential fields, particularly in energy storage and conversion. Recently, effective strategies have been developed to construct uniform nanoscale MOFs (NMOFs), which not only retain inherent advantages of MOFs but also develop some improved superiorities, including shorter diffusion pathway for guest transportation and more accessible active sites for surface adsorption and reaction. Additonally, their nanometer size provides more opportunity for post-functionalization and hybridization. In this review, recent progress on the preparation of NMOFs is summarized, primarily through bottom-up strategies including reaction parameter- and coordination-assisted synthesis, and top-down strategies such as liquid exfoliation and salt-template confinement. Additionally, recent applications of NMOFs in batteries as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes is discussed. Finally, some important issues concerning the fabrication and application are emphasized, which should be paid attention in future.

Hierarchically structured porous materials: synthesis strategies and applications in energy storage

To address the growing energy demands of sustainable development, it is crucial to develop new materials that can improve the efficiency of energy storage systems. Hierarchically structured porous materials have shown their great potential for energy storage applications owing to their large accessible space, high surface area, low density, excellent accommodation capability with volume and thermal variation, variable chemical compositions and well controlled and interconnected hierarchical porosity at different length scales. Porous hierarchy benefits electron and ion transport, and mass diffusion and exchange. The electrochemical behavior of hierarchically structured porous materials varies with different pore parameters. Understanding their relationship can lead to the defined and accurate design of highly efficient hierarchically structured porous materials to enhance further their energy storage performance. In this review, we take the characteristic parameters of the hierarchical pores as the survey object to summarize the recent progress on hierarchically structured porous materials for energy storage. This is the first of this kind exclusively to survey the performance of hierarchically structured porous materials from different porous characteristics. For those who are not familiar with hierarchically structured porous materials, a series of very significant synthesis strategies of hierarchically structured porous materials are firstly and briefly reviewed. This will be beneficial for those who want to quickly obtain useful reference information about the synthesis strategies of new hierarchically structured porous materials to improve their performance in energy storage. The effect of different organizational, structural and geometric parameters of porous hierarchy on their electrochemical behavior is then deeply discussed. We outline the existing problems and development challenges of hierarchically structured porous materials that need to be addressed in renewable energy applications. We hope that this review can stimulate strong intuition into the design and application of new hierarchically structured porous materials in energy storage and other fields.

Development of Halide Perovskite Single Crystal for Radiation Detection Applications

Preface: Recently, low-cost perovskite single crystals have attracted intensive attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and improved stability when compared to polycrystalline films for various applications, such as solar cells (Kojima et al., 2009; Lee et al., 2012; Tsai et al., 2016; Sahli et al., 2018), lasers (Gu et al., 2016; Veldhuis et al., 2016), radiation detection (Kim et al., 2017), and so on. The unique optoelectronic properties and low-cost growing processes for large-sized single crystals also make them greatly suitable for radiation detection. In this review, we summarize various synthesis methods of perovskite single crystals and introduced the high radiation detection performance of the perovskite single crystal. The advantages and limitations of halide perovskite single crystals as radiation detector candidates will be discussed in detail, and corresponding future development trends can be expected by overcoming current obstacles (Leijtens et al., 2018; Boyd et al., 2019), such as ion migration (Eames et al., 2015), stability, etc.

Recent Advances in Metallic Glass Nanostructures: Synthesis Strategies and Electrocatalytic Applications

Recent advances in metallic glass nanostructures (MGNs) are reported, covering a wide array of synthesis strategies, computational discovery, and design solutions that provide insight into distinct electrocatalytic applications. A brief introduction to the development and unique features of MGNs with an overview of top-down and bottom-up synthesis strategies is presented. Specifically, the morphology and structural analysis of several examples applying MGNs as electrodes are highlighted. Subsequently, a comprehensive discussion of commonly employed kinetic parameters and their connection with the unique material structures of MGNs on individual electrocatalytic reactions is made, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and alcohol (methanol or ethanol) oxidation reaction. Finally, a summary of the challenges and perspective on the future research and development relevant to MGNs as electrocatalysts is provided.

Strategic Syntheses of Vine and Wine Resveratrol Derivatives to Explore their Effects on Cell Functions and Dysfunctions

Trans-resveratrol, the most well-known polyphenolic stilbenoid, is found in grapes and accordingly in wine and it is considered to be beneficial for human health, especially towards the aging-linked cell alterations by providing numerous biological activities, such as anti-oxidant, antitumoral, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and platelet anti-aggregation properties. Although trans-resveratrol is a promising molecule, it cannot be considered as a drug, due to its weak bio-availability and fast metabolism. To overcome these weaknesses, several research teams have undertaken the synthesis of innovative trans-resveratrol derivatives, with the aim to increase its solubility in water and pharmacological activities towards cell targets. The aim of this review is to show the chronological evolution over the last 25 years of different strategies to develop more efficient trans-resveratrol derivatives towards organism physiology and, therefore, to enhance various pharmacological activities. While the literature on the development of new synthetic derivatives is impressive, this review will focus on selected strategies regarding the substitution of trans-resveratrol phenyl rings, first with hydroxy, methoxy, and halogen groups, and next with functionalized substituents. The effects on cell functions and dysfunctions of interesting resveratrol analogs will be addressed in this review.

Graphene-like single-layered covalent organic frameworks: synthesis strategies and application prospects

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, such as graphene and transition metal chalcogenides, show many interesting dimension-related materials properties. Inspired by the development of 2D inorganic nanomaterials, single-layered covalent organic frameworks (sCOFs), featuring atom-thick sheets and crystalline extended organic structures with covalently bonded building blocks, have attracted great attention in recent years. With their unique graphene-like topological structure and the merit of structural diversity, sCOFs promise to possess novel and designable properties. However, the synthesis of sCOFs with well-defined structures remains a great challenge. Herein, the recent development of the bottom-up synthesis methods of 2D sCOFs, such as thermodynamic equilibrium control methods, growth-kinetics control methods, and surface-assisted covalent polymerization methods, are reviewed. Finally, some of the critical properties and application prospects of these materials are outlined.
