At the limits of bisphosphonio-substituted stannylenes

Donor stabilization of Sn(II) and Pb(II) halides with 1,1'-ferrocenylene bridged bisphosphanes has been explored for Fe(C5H4P(C6H5)2)2 (dppf), and Fe(C5H4PH(C4H9))2. These bisphosphanes are reacted with SnBr2 and PbCl2 with and without additional Lewis acid (AlCl3) forming acyclic and cyclic donor adducts from which the latter represent bisphosphoniotetrylenes. Since dynamic exchange in solution is observed, characterization includes solution and solid-state NMR in addition to SC-XRD, amended by DFT calculations.

Bi- and tridentate coordination behaviour of a novel bis(phosphinimino)methanide ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel ferrocenyl-functionalized bis(phosphinimino)methane ligand (CH2 (PPh2 NFc)2 ). Deprotonation of CH2 (PPh2 NFc)2 with KN(SiMe3 )2 gave the dimeric species [K{CH(PPh2 NFc)2 }]2 , which was further reacted with ECl2 (E=Ge, Sn) to yield the tetrylene compounds [{CH(PPh2 NFc)2 }ECl]. The ligand and the resulting tetrylenes were examined for their electrochemical properties with the aid of cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, the reaction of the tetrylenes [{CH(PPh2 NFc)2 }ECl] with [AuC6 F5 (tht)] resulted in the bimetallic complexes [{(AuC6 F5 )CH(PPh2 NFc)2 }ECl] with an unusual Au coordination on the ligand backbone.

Dimetalloylene (M-E-M) Complexes of Heavier Main Group Elements Ge, Sn, Pb, Bi via Cleavage of E-X Bonds (X=N(SiMe3 )2 , OtBu) with an Iridium Hydride

Reactions of the IrV hydride [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 {BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 } with E[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 in good yields. Moreover, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Ge)2 was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [Me BDIDipp ]Ir(H)2 Ge[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 . These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe3 )2 and H2 through the apparent cleavage of an E-N(SiMe3 )2 bond by Ir-H. In a reversal of this process, ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -E)2 reacted with excess H2 to regenerate [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 . Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH2 )3 (μ2 -E)3 . The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([Me BDIDipp ]IrH)2 (μ2 -Bi)2 was prepared by the reaction of [Me BDIDipp ]IrH4 with Bi(NMe2 )3 or Bi(OtBu)3 to afford the first example of a "naked" two-coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir2 E2 (E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open-shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir2 Bi2 is characterized as having a closed-shell singlet ground state.

Dehydrogenative Double C-H Bond Activation in a Germylene-Rhodium Complex*

Transition metal tetrylene complexes offer great opportunities for molecular cooperation due to the ambiphilic character of the group 14 element. Here we focus on the coordination of germylene [(Ar^Mes2 )₂ Ge :] (Ar^Mes =C₆ H₃ -2,6-(C₆ H₂ -2,4,6-Me₃ )₂ ) to [RhCl(COD)]₂ (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene), which yields a neutral germyl complex in which the rhodium center exhibits both η⁶ - and η² -coordination to two mesityl rings in an unusual pincer-type structure. Chloride abstraction from this species triggers a singular dehydrogenative double C-H bond activation across the Ge/Rh motif. We have isolated and fully characterized three rhodium-germyl species associated to three C-H cleavage events along this process. The reaction mechanism has been further investigated by computational means, supporting the key cooperative action of rhodium and germanium centers.
