Contactless Palmprint Recognition Using Binarized Statistical Image Features-Based Multiresolution Analysis

In recent years, palmprint recognition has gained increased interest and has been a focus of significant research as a trustworthy personal identification method. The performance of any palmprint recognition system mainly depends on the effectiveness of the utilized feature extraction approach. In this paper, we propose a three-step approach to address the challenging problem of contactless palmprint recognition: (1) a pre-processing, based on median filtering and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), is used to remove potential noise and equalize the images' lighting; (2) a multiresolution analysis is applied to extract binarized statistical image features (BSIF) at several discrete wavelet transform (DWT) resolutions; (3) a classification stage is performed to categorize the extracted features into the corresponding class using a K-nearest neighbors (K-NN)-based classifier. The feature extraction strategy is the main contribution of this work; we used the multiresolution analysis to extract the pertinent information from several image resolutions as an alternative to the classical method based on multi-patch decomposition. The proposed approach was thoroughly assessed using two contactless palmprint databases: the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IITD) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Automatisation (CASIA). The results are impressive compared to the current state-of-the-art methods: the Rank-1 recognition rates are 98.77% and 98.10% for the IITD and CASIA databases, respectively.

T1K+: A Database for Benchmarking Color Texture Classification and Retrieval Methods

In this paper we present T1K+, a very large, heterogeneous database of high-quality texture images acquired under variable conditions. T1K+ contains 1129 classes of textures ranging from natural subjects to food, textile samples, construction materials, etc. T1K+ allows the design of experiments especially aimed at understanding the specific issues related to texture classification and retrieval. To help the exploration of the database, all the 1129 classes are hierarchically organized in 5 thematic categories and 266 sub-categories. To complete our study, we present an evaluation of hand-crafted and learned visual descriptors in supervised texture classification tasks.

Deep Learning and Handcrafted Features for Virus Image Classification

In this work, we present an ensemble of descriptors for the classification of virus images acquired using transmission electron microscopy. We trained multiple support vector machines on different sets of features extracted from the data. We used both handcrafted algorithms and a pretrained deep neural network as feature extractors. The proposed fusion strongly boosts the performance obtained by each stand-alone approach, obtaining state of the art performance.

Comparative Study on Local Binary Patterns for Mammographic Density and Risk Scoring

Breast density is considered to be one of the major risk factors in developing breast cancer. High breast density can also affect the accuracy of mammographic abnormality detection due to the breast tissue characteristics and patterns. We reviewed variants of local binary pattern descriptors to classify breast tissue which are widely used as texture descriptors for local feature extraction. In our study, we compared the classification results for the variants of local binary patterns such as classic LBP (Local Binary Pattern), ELBP (Elliptical Local Binary Pattern), Uniform ELBP, LDP (Local Directional Pattern) and M-ELBP (Mean-ELBP). A wider comparison with alternative texture analysis techniques was studied to investigate the potential of LBP variants in density classification. In addition, we investigated the effect on classification when using descriptors for the fibroglandular disk region and the whole breast region. We also studied the effect of the Region-of-Interest (ROI) size and location, the descriptor size, and the choice of classifier. The classification results were evaluated based on the MIAS database using a ten-run ten-fold cross validation approach. The experimental results showed that the Elliptical Local Binary Pattern descriptors and Local Directional Patterns extracted most relevant features for mammographic tissue classification indicating the relevance of directional filters. Similarly, the study showed that classification of features from ROIs of the fibroglandular disk region performed better than classification based on the whole breast region.
