Real-life users of hormonal or thermal male contraception: An analysis of female partners' motivation, experience, and satisfaction

BACKGROUND

Two male contraceptive methods that inhibit spermatogenesis currently exist: thermal male contraception and hormonal male contraception. Only five studies have been conducted on the acceptability of these methods among men; among women, only the hypothetical acceptability of such a male contraceptive approach as the sole contraception method used by a couple has been evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the motivation, experience, and satisfaction of female partners in couples using hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception as the sole contraception.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, 123 male users of hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception as the couple's sole contraception method were asked to invite their female partner to participate in an anonymous online survey. The questionnaire included 95 questions exploring population characteristics, contraceptive and pregnancy history, motivations for choosing hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception, the experience of the women in the successive phase of use, relationships with their partner, and satisfaction with the contraception method.

RESULTS

The response rate among participating women was 69% (59/86). The two main reasons for choosing male contraceptive were the desire to share the contraception role in the couple (65%) and the desire of the man to take charge of the contraception (61%). The sexual satisfaction score increased significantly between the contraceptive methods used before hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception and the phase of contraceptive use (p < 0.01). The overall satisfaction level with thermal male contraception or hormonal male contraception was rated at 3.7 ± 0.6 out of 4. Women mostly recommended hormonal male contraception or thermal male contraception because of the share of contraceptive responsibility and mental load (n = 23/54, 43%).

DISCUSSION

This population of women seemed to have struggled to find a contraceptive method that suited them, but most took advantage of thermal male contraception or hormonal male contraception and trusted their male partner to take charge of contraception use.

CONCLUSION

The positive evaluation from women in partnerships using thermal male contraception and hormonal male contraception should encourage the development of these methods.

Perinatal women's satisfaction with nurses caring behaviours in teaching hospitals in China

BACKGROUND

Adequate caring behaviours provided by nurses can increase patients' satisfaction of care. Yet few researchers have examined women's satisfaction in nurses' caring behaviours in China and then published the study in English.

AIM

The aim of this study was to identify the level of women's satisfaction with nurses' caring behaviours during the antenatal, childbirth and postnatal periods.

METHODS

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed using a sample of 422 postpartum women of two teaching hospitals in Wuhan, China. A structured questionnaire on socio-demographic information was completed, and a satisfaction scale of 60 items concerning nurses' caring behaviours was measured.

RESULTS

The findings showed that participants reported a good satisfaction score for nurses' caring behaviours during all three periods. Behaviours on the 'Monitor' subscale obtained the highest score (a mean score of 4.46 for the antenatal period, 4.64 for the childbirth period and 4.31 for the postnatal period). The subscale with the second highest score was 'Human respect' (4.53, 4.27 and 4.56, respectively), while the subscale with the lowest score was 'Trust' (3.78 and 3.98). The statistical significances of the demographics of the women were shown concerning their perceived satisfaction of five subscales of caring behaviours.

CONCLUSION

The study revealed no statistically significant differences in the perceived satisfaction in nurses' caring behaviours between the antenatal, childbirth and postnatal periods. However, nursing administration development projects that focus on caring are still needed. Additionally, more studies that reflect Watson's theory of human caring on the maternity population should be conducted with a larger sample size.

Psychosocial outcomes of a randomized controlled trial of outpatient cervical priming for induction of labor

BACKGROUND

Induction of labor, an increasingly common intervention, is often preceded by the application of an agent to "prime" or "ripen" the cervix. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare clinical, economic, and psychosocial outcomes of inpatient and outpatient cervical priming before induction of labor. In this paper we present the psychosocial outcomes.

METHODS

Women participating in a randomized controlled trial in two Australian metropolitan teaching hospitals completed questionnaires to measure anxiety and depression at enrollment, and to examine satisfaction, experiences, depression, and infant feeding 7 weeks after giving birth. Data analysis was by intention to treat and by having received the intervention as intended (approximately 50% in each group).

RESULTS

Of 1,004 eligible women, 85 percent consented (n = 407, outpatient; n = 414 inpatient). No statistically significant or clinically relevant differences were found in immediate anxiety, depression, or infant feeding. Small, statistically significant differences favoring outpatient priming were found in seven of the nine subscales in the 7-week postpartum questionnaire. The direction of the effect was maintained, mostly with a larger effect size in women who received the intervention.

CONCLUSION

Women allocated to outpatient priming were more satisfied with their priming experience than women allocated to inpatient priming. Being informed that they could go home after cervical priming did not increase women's anxiety.
