Passivated iodine pentoxide oxidizer for potential biocidal nanoenergetic applications

Iodine pentoxide (I2O5), also known as diiodine pentoxide, is a strong oxidizer which has been recently proposed as an iodine-rich oxidizer in nanoenergetic formulations, whose combustion products lead to molecular iodine as a biocidal agent. However, its highly hygroscopic nature hinders its performance as a strong oxidizer and an iodine releasing agent and prevents its implementation. In this work, we developed a gas phase assisted aerosol spray pyrolysis which enables creation of iron oxide passivated I2O5. Transmission electron microscopy elemental imaging as well as temperature-jump mass spectrometry confirmed the core shell nature of the material and the fact that I2O5 could be encapsulated in pure unhydrated form. Combustion performance finds an optimal coating thickness that enables combustion performance similar to a high performing CuO based thermite.

Formation of iodinated organic compounds by oxidation of iodide-containing waters with manganese dioxide

This study shows that iodinated organic compounds can be produced when iodide-containing waters are in contact with manganese oxide birnessite (delta-MnO2) in the pH range of 5-7. In the absence of natural organic matter (NOM), iodide is oxidized to iodate that is also adsorbed onto delta-MnO2. In the presence of iodide and NOM, adsordable organic iodine compounds (AOI) are formed at pH < 7 because of the oxidation of iodide to iodine by delta-MnO2 and the reactions of iodine with NOM. In addition, iodoacetic acid and iodoform have been identified as specific iodinated byproducts. Formation of iodoform is not observed for high NOM/delta-MnO2 ratios due to inhibition of the catalytic effect of delta-MnO2 by NOM poisoning. Experiments with model compounds such as resorcinol and 3,5-heptanedione confirmed that the delta-MnO2/l(-) system is very effective for the formation of iodinated organic compounds. These results suggest that birnessite acts as a catalyst through the oxidation of iodide to iodine and the polarization of the iodine molecule, which then reacts with NOM moieties. Furthermore, our results indicate that during water treatment in the presence of manganese oxide, iodinated organic compounds may be formed, which may lead to taste and odor or toxicological problems.

Total synthesis of (+)-azaspiracid-1. An exhibition of the intricacies of complex molecule synthesis

The synthesis of the marine neurotoxin azaspiracid-1 has been accomplished. The individual fragments were synthesized by catalytic enantioselective processes: A hetero-Diels-Alder reaction to afford the E- and HI-ring fragments, a carbonyl-ene reaction to furnish the CD-ring fragment, and a Mukaiyama aldol reaction to deliver the FG-ring fragment. The subsequent fragment couplings were accomplished by aldol and sulfone anion methodologies. All ketalization events to form the nonacyclic target were accomplished under equilibrating conditions utilizing the imbedded configurations of the molecule to adopt one favored conformation. A final fragment coupling of the anomeric EFGHI-sulfone anion to the ABCD-aldehyde completed the convergent synthesis of (+)-azaspiracid-1.

Synthesis and photochemistry of 1-iodocyclohexene: influence of ultrasound on ionic vs. radical behaviour

Simultaneous application of UV light and ultrasonic irradiation to a reaction mixture containing 1-iodocyclohexene is reported. The irradiation of 1-iodocyclohexene in methanol was carried out with or without addition of zinc. The effect of ultrasound or mechanical stirring on this solid-liquid system was also compared. The irradiation of 1-iodocyclohexene in methanol in the presence of zinc increases the yield of the nucleophilic trapping product, compared with the yield after irradiation in the absence of zinc. The photodegradation of 1-iodocyclohexene was slightly accelerated after addition of zinc. A rapid formation of radical product was accompanied by substantial decrease of 1-iodocyclohexene after application of ultrasound and irradiation without the zinc. The ultrasound significantly affects the photobehaviour of this reaction, predominantly its radical route. The joint application of ultrasound and zinc contributes positively to the production of radical and ionic products. The sonochemical stirring is more effective than mechanical stirring.

The novel and efficient direct synthesis of N,O-acetal compounds using a hypervalent iodine(III) reagent: an improved synthetic method for a key intermediate of discorhabdins

The use of hypervalent iodine(III) reagents allowed us to develop the novel and efficient direct synthesis of N,O-acetal compounds via the oxidative fragmentation reaction of alpha-amino acids or alpha-amino alcohols; furthermore, we succeeded in developing an improved synthesis of the key intermediate of discorhabdins.

Easy and Safe preparations of (diacetoxyiodo) arenes from iodoarenes, with urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct (UHP) as the oxidant and the fully interpreted (1)H- and (13)C-NMR spectra of the products

An easy and safe, though only moderately effective method is presented for preparing (diacetoxyiodo)arenes, ArI(OAc)2, from iodoarenes, ArI, using the commercially available and easily handled urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct (UHP) as the oxidant. The reactions take place in anhydrous AcOH/Ac2O/AcONa (a catalyst)mixtures, at 40 oC for 3.5 h to afford the purified ArI(OAc)2 in 37-78% yields. The fully interpreted (1)H- and (13)C-NMR spectra of the ArI(OAc)2 products are reported.

Pd-catalyzed carbonyl insertion coupling reactions of a hypervalent iodoheterocycle with alcohols and amines

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling carbonyl insertion reaction between 3,7-bis(N,N-dimethylamino)-10H-dibenz[b,e]iodinium iodide (1) and alcohols or amines 2 is described. Some new amides and esters 3 containing an active iodo functional group have been prepared in 65-91% yields.

Iodine electrophiles in stereoselective reactions: recent developments and synthetic applications

The regio- and stereocontrolled functionalisation of carbon-carbon double bonds bears enormous potential in organic synthesis. This area has been extensively studied and reviewed as alkenes are amongst the most important starting materials for synthetic chemists, accessible in many varieties and in large quantities. We focus in this tutorial review only on recent developments using iodine electrophiles for the functionalisation of alkenes although transition-mediated reactions and functionalisations with chalcogen electrophiles also play an important role. New synthetic applications using this methodology showing scope and limitations of iodine-mediated processes also within the context of other electrophilic reactions are highlighted.

Radiopaque acrylic cements prepared with a new acrylic derivative of iodo-quinoline

A novel iodine-containing methacrylate, 2,5-diiodo-8-quinolyl methacrylate, has been synthesized and used in the preparation of acrylic radiopaque cements. The effect of incorporation of this monomer to the self-curing resins, on the curing parameters, swelling behaviour and mechanical properties was studied. The incorporation of the radiopaque compound 2,5-diiodo-8-hydroxyquinoline to the solid phase was also carried out for comparative experiments. A decrease in the peak temperature and an increase in the setting time was observed with the addition of the radiopaque monomer, however, the curing parameters did not appreciably change with the addition of the radiopaque compound to the solid phase. Swelling of the modified cements was in the same range as that of the radiolucent cement; however, the diffusion coefficients calculated according to the Fick's law were higher for the iodine-containing materials. The addition of 5 wt% of the iodine-containing methacrylate provided a significant increase in the tensile properties with respect to either control radiolucent formulations or BaSO4-containing formulations. Biocompatibility of the modified cements was studied by implantation of rods of the cements into rats and histological analysis of the surrounding tissue.

[125I/127I]iodoHoechst 33342: synthesis, DNA binding, and biodistribution

An iodinated analog of the DNA-minor-groove-binding agent Hoechst 33342 has been synthesized and evaluated for DNA binding and tumor targeting. The bis-benzimidazole ring system of the title compound was constructed from the piperazinyl terminus via a Pinner-type cyclization followed by oxidative cyclization of the diamine Schiff base. To synthesize radioiodoHoechst 33342, (trimethylstannyl)Hoechst 33342 was prepared by the same strategy and subjected to mild radioiododestannylation in the presence of lactoperoxidase. After purification by HPLC, the radiochemical was separated in carrier-free form with > 85% radiochemical yield and > 99% chemical and radiochemical purity. Fluorescence spectrometric analysis of the binding of iodoHoechst 33342 to calf thymus DNA gave an equilibrium association constant (Ka) of 2.57 x 10(7) M-1 comparable to the Ka value of Hoechst 33342. Fluorescence microscopy of viable V79 cells demonstrated that the iodinated dye stained the nuclei with avidity similar to that of the noniodinated dye. The biodistribution of [125I]-iodoHoechst 33342 in LS174T tumor-bearing athymic mice 4 h postadministration showed a tumor uptake of 3-4% injected dose per gram (ID/g), tumor/blood ratio of 6-8, and tumor/ nontumor ratios above unity for most organs. A low thyroid uptake (approximately 2% ID/g) indicated that the radiochemical did not deiodinate and was stable in vivo.
