Towards the Limits of Existence of Nuclear Structure: Observation and First Spectroscopy of the Isotope ^{31}K by Measuring Its Three-Proton Decay

The most remote isotope from the proton dripline (by 4 atomic mass units) has been observed: ^{31}K. It is unbound with respect to three-proton (3p) emission, and its decays have been detected in flight by measuring the trajectories of all decay products using microstrip detectors. The 3p emission processes have been studied by the means of angular correlations of ^{28}S+3p and the respective decay vertices. The energies of the previously unknown ground and excited states of ^{31}K have been determined. This provides its 3p separation energy value S_{3p} of -4.6(2)  MeV. Upper half-life limits of 10 ps of the observed ^{31}K states have been derived from distributions of the measured decay vertices.

NeuRad detector prototype pulse shape study

The EXPERT setup located at the Super-FRS facility, the part of the FAIR complex in Darmstadt, Germany, is intended for investigation of properties of light exotic nuclei. One of its modules, the high granularity neutron detector NeuRad assembled from a large number of the scintillating fiber is intended for registration of neutrons emitted by investigated nuclei in low-energy decays. Feasibility of the detector strongly depends on its timing properties defined by the spatial distribution of ionization, light propagation inside the fibers, light emission kinetics and transition time jitter in the multi-anode photomultiplier tube. The first attempt of understanding the pulse formation in the prototype of the NeuRad detector by comparing experimental results and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations is reported in this paper.

Observation and Spectroscopy of New Proton-Unbound Isotopes ³⁰Ar and ²⁹Cl: An Interplay of Prompt Two-Proton and Sequential Decay

Previously unknown isotopes (30)Ar and (29)Cl have been identified by measurement of the trajectories of their in-flight decay products (28)S+p+p and (28)S+p, respectively. The analysis of angular correlations of the fragments provided information on decay energies and the structure of the parent states. The ground states of (30)Ar and (29)Cl were found at 2.25(-0.10)(+0.15) and 1.8±0.1  MeV above the two- and one-proton thresholds, respectively. The lowest states in (30)Ar and (29)Cl point to a violation of isobaric symmetry in the structure of these unbound nuclei. The two-proton decay has been identified in a transition region between simultaneous two-proton and sequential proton emissions from the (30)Ar ground state, which is characterized by an interplay of three-body and two-body decay mechanisms. The first hint of a fine structure of the two-proton decay of (30)Ar*(2(+)) has been obtained by detecting two decay branches into the ground and first-excited states of the (28)S fragment.

Production and decay of element 114: high cross sections and the new nucleus 277Hs

The fusion-evaporation reaction 244Pu(48Ca,3-4n){288,289}114 was studied at the new gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Thirteen correlated decay chains were observed and assigned to the production and decay of {288,289}114. At a compound nucleus excitation energy of E{*}=39.8-43.9  MeV, the 4n evaporation channel cross section was 9.8{-3.1}{+3.9}  pb. At E^{*}=36.1-39.5  MeV, that of the 3n evaporation channel was 8.0{-4.5}{+7.4}  pb. In one of the 3n evaporation channel decay chains, a previously unobserved α branch in 281Ds was observed (probability to be of random origin from background: 0.1%). This α decay populated the new nucleus 277Hs, which decayed by spontaneous fission after a lifetime of 4.5 ms.

Snow and ice concentrations of selected persistent pollutants in the Ob-Yenisey river watershed

As one of the largest river systems attached to the Arctic Basin, the Ob-Yenisey watershed has the potential to be a major supply route of persistent organic pollutants into marine ecosystems of the Arctic Ocean. Snowfall and ice formation taking place in the Ob-Yenisey river basin and shelf are key components of the system of processes responsible for the transfer of pollutants from this high latitude river to the adjacent Kara and Barents Seas. Here we examine a large data set on persistent organic pollutants in snow and ice determined for areas within the Ob (interior and coastal), Yenisey and adjacent shelf. Data on the levels of total oil hydrocarbons, as well as individual components for groups (PAHs, HCHs, CBs, DDTs, PCBs) were examined in this investigation for two time periods: winter (1992)-spring (1993) and winter (1993)-spring (1994). Spatial averaging of each data set for individual years was performed in order to identify large-scale geographical trends in contaminant distributions within the four regions. The analysis indicates that mean pollutant concentrations in snow are consistent throughout the watershed. Comparing data from 1992/1993 and 1993/1994, in all cases, concentrations do not vary appreciatively among the different regions. A similar finding was observed for concentrations of pollutants in ice. Persistent organic pollutants for the Ob-Yenisey watershed are in most cases not dissimilar to measurements carried out in the far north of Canada. The exception is summation operator DDT. Concentrations of this pollutant are an order of magnitude higher in the Ob-Yenisey watershed as compared to the Canadian Arctic (0.09 ng/l).
