Abstract
OBJECTIVES The heterogeneity of tinnitus in terms of etiology, presentation and sometimes severe impact on quality of life hinders treatment and clinical research. The European School for Interdisciplinary Tinnitus Research Screening Questionnaire (ESIT-SQ) collects standardized tinnitus characteristics for patient subtyping. A validated French translation of the ESIT-SQ is presented here. METHOD On the initiative of the French Interdisciplinary Tinnitus Association (AFREPA), 3 translators (1 professional translator, 1 clinician and 1 researcher) were missioned to translate the English version of the ESIT-SQ into French, adhering to good practice guidelines. Nine patients were recruited with the help of the France-Acouphènes patient association, to test and validate the translation. Lastly, an exploratory survey of responses to the French questionnaire was conducted online via the Siopi mobile phone application. RESULTS The French translation of the ESIT-SQ was successfully validated. 105 patients responded to the exploratory survey, and their characteristics are presented here. CONCLUSION This new validated French translation of the ESIT-SQ will enable epidemiological and clinical data to be collected in French-speaking populations, and thus compiled and compared with data collected with other versions of this questionnaire already published in other languages.

Characterization and molecular subtyping of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains in provincial abattoirs from the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, during 2016-2018. Prev Vet Med 2020; 183:105133. Abstract
We characterized Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 (n = 20) and non-O157 (n = 68) isolated from carcasses (n = 54), the environment (n = 20), head meat (n = 3) and viscera washing and chilling water (n = 11) in provincial abattoirs before and after implementing improvement actions. The strains were tested for eae, saa, ehxA and fliCH7 genes. Variants stx1 and stx2 were also determined. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was carried out with restriction enzymes XbaI and BlnI. All twenty O157 STEC strains [H7; H21; HNM] carried genes rfbO157 and ehxA; 90.0 % were positive for eae and 15.0 % were negative for fliCH7 and positive for saa. Results of PFGE showed 17 XbaI patterns, of which 14 were unique and three formed clusters. From the 68 non-O157 STEC strains, 66.2 %, 55.9 % and 2.9 % were positive for ehxA, saa and eae genes, respectively. Fifty-three XbaI patterns were obtained (49 unique and four forming clusters). Cross-contamination between products and between the environment and products was confirmed in all abattoirs. While the proposed improvements reduced the risk of contamination, Good Hygiene Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices should be implemented in provincial abattoirs, stressing the importance of having a uniform national food safety standard.

New immunobiotics from highly proteolytic Lactobacillus delbrueckii strains: their impact on intestinal antiviral innate immune response. Benef Microbes 2020; 11:375-390. Abstract
Proteolytic starter cultures with intrinsic immunomodulatory activities are desirably features for the development of functional foods, which would significantly reduce the cost of their production (one-strain starter) having an additional beneficial effect on the host. In this work, Lactobacillus delbrueckii strains were selected according to their ability to efficiently hydrolyse β-casein and to modulate the immune system. Among 36 strains evaluated, the highest proteolytic activities were found for L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis CRL581 and L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus CRL656. The immunomodulatory effect of both strains and their β-casein hydrolysates (CRL581 and CRL656 hydrolysates, respectively) were studied in a murine model. Balb/c mice were fed lactobacilli or their hydrolysates for three days. One day after the last lactobacilli or hydrolysate treatments, mice were challenged with the Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist poly(I:C) by intraperitoneal injection. Before and after poly(I:C) challenge the phagocytic and microbicidal activity of peritoneal macrophages, intestinal immunoglobulin A (IgA), cytokine profile, and histological analysis of the intestine were analysed. L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis CRL581 significantly increased the activation of peritoneal macrophages as well as the levels of intestinal IgA, interleukin (IL)-10 and interferon (IFN)-γ when compared to untreated controls. In addition, the CRL581 strain was able to significantly reduce the intestinal inflammatory damage triggered by TLR3 activation. L. delbrueckii CRL581 increased the levels of IL-10, IFN-γ and IFN-β, and reduced tumour necrosis factor alpha and IL-6 concentrations in the intestine of poly(I:C)-challenged mice. No immunomodulatory effects were observed for the CRL656 strain or for the CRL581 or CRL656 hydrolysates. The results of this work show that the technologically relevant and high proteolytic strain L. delbrueckii CRL581 is able to beneficially modulate the intestinal innate antiviral immune response. Although further studies with the CRL581 strain are required to corroborate and deepen its immunological effects, this bacterium is an interesting alternative for the development of new functional foods with antiviral capabilities.

Abstract
Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia in non-HIV patients is infrequent and characterized by atypical presentations and increased severity. Although hematogenous dissemination from the lungs can lead to extrapulmonary infections, isolation of oocysts from blood in human subjects has not been documented. We report a case of P. jiroveci pneumonia with persistent isolation of oocysts from blood and positivity of P. jiroveci polymerase chain reaction. The patient presented with bilateral diffuse pulmonary nodules and received prolonged treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of corn or sorghum diet and canthaxanthin (CX) supplementation on performance in broiler breeders. A total of 440 females with similar body weight (BW) (3.71 ± 0.14 kg) and 60 roosters were placed in an open-sided house with 20 pens, randomly distributed in a factorial arrangement (2 × 2). There were 4 diets of 2 ingredients; corn (CO) or sorghum (SO) and 2 levels of CX; 6 mg/kg (CX) and 0 mg/kg (NCX) totaling 5 replicate pens of 22 females and 3 males each, from 42 to 65 wk, divided in 2 periods (from wk 42 to 53 and wk 54 to 65). Birds' BW was measured every 28 d and mortality rate was calculated at the end of trial. Egg production (%), egg specific gravity (g/cm3), egg weight (g), yolk weight (%), albumen weight (%), eggshell weight (%) and yolk colorimetric score were measured weekly. Incubation parameters were recorded in 12 incubations to evaluate hatching eggs, hatching (%), hatchability (%), fertility (%), weight of the chicks born and their quality. The BW, mortality, percentage of yolk and albumen weight, fertility and some incubation parameters were not affected (P > 0.05) by diets used. An increase in the egg production, hatching eggs, chicks born and first quality chick by hen at the second period were observed in CX breeder's diets (P = 0.0066; P = 0.0060; P = 0.0368; P = 0.0326). Egg specific gravity and eggshell weight were improved at the first period by SO+CX diet (P = 0.0138; P = 0.0209) and the same effect to egg weight, but at the second period (P = 0.0251). The CX was well absorbed from the diet and effectively transferred to the egg yolk, thereby increasing egg yolk pigmentation in the both periods (P < 0.0001). The CX supplementation in broiler breeder diets improved the productive and reproductive performance (laying% and hatchable eggs) at the second period, also to the both periods improved the egg yolk pigmentation.

Abstract
Listeriosis is a foodborne disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes. The aims of this work were to develop and validate an in-house real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the detection of L. monocytogenes, and to determine its prevalence in raw ground beef samples from 53 butcheries that also sell ready-to-eat foods. One set of primers and one hydrolysis probe were designed for hly gene detection and then challenged with pure strains. The detection was successful for all L. monocytogenes strains analyzed and negative for all non-L. monocytogenes strains (detection limit, 10 colony forming unit [CFU]/mL). Inclusivity, exclusivity, and analytical accuracy were 100%. L. monocytogenes was detected in 41.5% of raw ground beef samples from the 53 butcheries analyzed. This RT-PCR may be a valuable method for rapid detection of L. monocytogenes in meat.

Isolation and characterization of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli from beef carcasses, cuts and trimmings of abattoirs in Argentina. PLoS One 2017; 12:e0183248. Abstract
Several foods contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are associated with human diseases. Some countries have established microbiological criteria for non-O157 STEC, thus, the absence of serogroups O26, O45, O103, O104, O111, O121, and O145 in sprouts from the European Union or ground beef and beef trimmings from the United States is mandatory. While in Argentina screening for O26, O103, O111, O145 and O121 in ground beef, ready-to-eat food, sausages and vegetables is mandatory, other countries have zero-tolerance for all STEC in chilled beef. The aim of this study was to provide data on the prevalence of non-O157 STEC isolated from beef processed in eight Argentinean cattle slaughterhouses producing beef for export and local markets, and to know the non-O157 STEC profiles through strain characterization and genotypic analysis. Samples (n = 15,965) from 3,205 beef carcasses, 9,570 cuts and 3,190 trimmings collected between March and September 2014 were processed in pools of five samples each. Pools of samples (n = 3,193) from 641 carcasses, 1,914 cuts and 638 trimming were analyzed for non-O157 STEC isolation according to ISO/CEN 13136:2012. Of these, 37 pools of carcasses (5.8%), 111 pools of cuts (5.8%) and 45 pools of trimmings (7.0%) were positive for non-O157 STEC. STEC strains (n = 200) were isolated from 193 pools of samples. The most prevalent serotypes were O174:H21, O185:H7, O8:H19, O178:H19 and O130:H11, and the most prevalent genotypes were stx2c(vh-b) and stx2a/saa/ehxA. O103:H21 strain was eae-positive and one O178:H19 strain was aggR/aaiC-positive. The prevalence of non-O157 STEC in beef carcasses reported here was low. None of the non-O157 STEC strains isolated corresponded to the non-O157 STEC serotypes and virulence profiles isolated from human cases in Argentina in the same study period. The application of microbiological criteria for each foodstuff should be determined by risk analysis in order to have a stringent monitoring system. Likewise, zero-tolerance intervention measures should be applied in beef, together with GMP and HACCP. Further, collaborative efforts for risk assessment, management and communication are extremely important to improve the safety of foodstuffs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective tinnitus (ST) is a frequent audiologic condition that still requires effective treatment. This study aimed at evaluating two therapeutic approaches: Virtual Reality (VR) immersion in auditory and visual 3D environments and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). METHODS This open, randomized and therapeutic equivalence trial used bilateral testing of VR versus CBT. Adult patients displaying unilateral or predominantly unilateral ST, and fulfilling inclusion criteria were included after giving their written informed consent. We measured the different therapeutic effect by comparing the mean scores of validated questionnaires and visual analog scales, pre and post protocol. Equivalence was established if both strategies did not differ for more than a predetermined limit. We used univariate and multivariate analysis adjusted on baseline values to assess treatment efficacy. In addition of this trial, purely exploratory comparison to a waiting list group (WL) was provided. RESULTS Between August, 2009 and November, 2011, 148 of 162 screened patients were enrolled (VR n = 61, CBT n = 58, WL n = 29). These groups did not differ at baseline for demographic data. Three month after the end of the treatment, we didn't find any difference between VR and CBT groups either for tinnitus severity (p = 0.99) or tinnitus handicap (p = 0.36). CONCLUSION VR appears to be at least as effective as CBT in unilateral ST patients.

Abstract
A chronic infection with "high risk" human papillomavirus (HPV) is as an obligated step in the development of cervical dysplasia and cancer and, less frequently, other types of cancers. It has been suggested to be responsible for an estimated 100% of cases of cervical cancer, 90% of anal cancers, 40% of vulvar, vaginal and penile cancers and very likely about 18% of oropharyngeal cancers. Furthermore, infection with "low risk" HPV types is responsible for some benign conditions such as genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Even if it is only very rarely a causative factor leading to cancer, these benign diseases have a high socio-economic impact. HPV vaccination has been shown to be viable method in the prevention of HPV-related pathologies. Currently, there are two vaccine formulas belonging to the very low particles (VLPs) first generation vaccines. The first is the bivalent vaccine Cervarix®, which is active against high risk HPV 16 and 18. The second is the quadrivalent vaccine Gardasil®, which is active against high risk HPV 16 and 18, as well as against the low risk HPV types 6, 11. In this paper, we will discuss typical HPV-related pathologies, the effectiveness of these two first generation vaccines, existing advices, potential side effects and limits as well as new directions for HPV-vaccines implementation.

Abstract
Since the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is no longer a contraindication for solid organ transplantation. In HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients undergoing liver transplantation, HCV-related cirrhosis, drug-drug interactions, and calcineurin inhibitors-related toxicity affect clinical outcomes. Therapeutic drug monitoring can be useful to assess antiretroviral over- or underexposure in this cohort. We report the clinical characteristics along with antiretroviral trough levels of maraviroc, darunavir, and etravirine in 3 HIV/HCV-coinfected liver transplant recipients who developed post-transplant liver cirrhosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fungal contamination of poultry feed causes economic losses to industry and represents a potential risk to animal health. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effectiveness of whey fermented with kefir grains as additive to reduce fungal incidence, thus improving feed safety. RESULTS Whey fermented for 24 h at 20 °C with kefir grains (100 g L(-1) ) reduced conidial germination of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus, Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium crustosum, Trichoderma longibrachiatum and Rhizopus sp. Poultry feed supplemented with fermented whey (1 L kg(-1) ) was two to four times more resistant to fungal contamination than control feed depending on the fungal species. Additionally, it contained kefir microorganisms at levels of 1 × 10(8) colony-forming units (CFU) kg(-1) of lactic acid bacteria and 6 × 10(7) CFU kg(-1) of yeasts even after 30 days of storage. CONCLUSION Fermented whey added to poultry feed acted as a biopreservative, improving its resistance to fungal contamination and increasing its shelf life.

Abstract
The effects of supplementing canthaxanthin on productive and reproductive aspects of broiler breeders were examined in this study. In total, 360 female pullets and 36 roosters were placed in an open-sided house with 12 pens, each pen with an area of 7.0 m(2) (3.5 × 2.0 m). At 42 wk of age, the breeder hens and roosters were distributed into 2 experimental groups with similar BW and uniformity. From 46 to 66 wk of age, one group received 6 mg/kg of canthaxanthin supplemented in the diet and the other group received the diet without the addition of canthaxanthin (control diet). Body weight was measured every 28 d, the laying rate was calculated weekly, and mortality was evaluated at the end of the study. Twenty-one weekly incubations were performed to evaluate fertility and incubation responses. To evaluate the antioxidant effect of canthaxanthin at different storage times and during the incubation process, eggs from each treatment were subject to thiobarbituric reactive substances analysis. Body weight, mortality, and laying rate were not affected by the inclusion of canthaxanthin in the breeder's diets. An increase in hatchability of total and fertile eggs (P ≤ 0.0001 and P ≤ 0.0003, respectively) in breeders fed canthaxanthin during the experimental period was observed. Canthaxanthin also improved breeder fertility and reduced embryo mortality. This can be attributed to reductions in embryo mortality in the first 48 h of incubation and in the last wk of incubation. No differences were observed in BW and quality of the chicks. A reduction of thiobarbituric reactive substances was observed in yolks from stored hatching eggs produced by breeders fed diets plus canthaxanthin. The same effect was observed in yolks of eggs stored for 4 d and incubated for 7 d. The supplementation of broiler breeder diets with canthaxanthin improved the hatchability rate, fertility, and reduced the presence of thiobarbituric reactive substances in eggs.

Abstract
During the past decade, a large amount of work on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been performed, including the development of new paradigms of stimulation, the integration of imaging data, and the coupling of TMS techniques with electroencephalography or neuroimaging. These accumulating data being difficult to synthesize, several French scientific societies commissioned a group of experts to conduct a comprehensive review of the literature on TMS. This text contains all the consensual findings of the expert group on the mechanisms of action, safety rules and indications of TMS, including repetitive TMS (rTMS). TMS sessions have been conducted in thousands of healthy subjects or patients with various neurological or psychiatric diseases, allowing a better assessment of risks associated with this technique. The number of reported side effects is extremely low, the most serious complication being the occurrence of seizures. In most reported seizures, the stimulation parameters did not follow the previously published recommendations (Wassermann, 1998) [430] and rTMS was associated to medication that could lower the seizure threshold. Recommendations on the safe use of TMS / rTMS were recently updated (Rossi et al., 2009) [348], establishing new limits for stimulation parameters and fixing the contraindications. The recommendations we propose regarding safety are largely based on this previous report with some modifications. By contrast, the issue of therapeutic indications of rTMS has never been addressed before, the present work being the first attempt of a synthesis and expert consensus on this topic. The use of TMS/rTMS is discussed in the context of chronic pain, movement disorders, stroke, epilepsy, tinnitus and psychiatric disorders. There is already a sufficient level of evidence of published data to retain a therapeutic indication of rTMS in clinical practice (grade A) in chronic neuropathic pain, major depressive episodes, and auditory hallucinations. The number of therapeutic indications of rTMS is expected to increase in coming years, in parallel with the optimisation of stimulation parameters.

Abstract
We investigated the chemical and microbiological compositions of three types of whey to be used for kefir fermentation as well as the inhibitory capacity of their subsequent fermentation products against 100 Salmonella sp. and 100 Escherichia coli pathogenic isolates. All the wheys after fermentation with 10% (wt/vol) kefir grains showed inhibition against all 200 isolates. The content of lactic acid bacteria in fermented whey ranged from 1.04 × 10(7) to 1.17 × 10(7) CFU/ml and the level of yeasts from 2.05 × 10(6) to 4.23 × 10(6) CFU/ml. The main changes in the chemical composition during fermentation were a decrease in lactose content by 41 to 48% along with a corresponding lactic acid production to a final level of 0.84 to 1.20% of the total reaction products. The MIC was a 30% dilution of the fermentation products for most of the isolates, while the MBC varied between 40 and 70%, depending on the isolate. The pathogenic isolates Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis 2713 and E. coli 2710 in the fermented whey lost their viability after 2 to 7 h of incubation. When pathogens were deliberately inoculated into whey before fermentation, the CFU were reduced by 2 log cycles for E. coli and 4 log cycles for Salmonella sp. after 24 h of incubation. The inhibition was mainly related to lactic acid production. This work demonstrated the possibility of using kefir grains to ferment an industrial by-product in order to obtain a natural acidic preparation with strong bacterial inhibitory properties that also contains potentially probiotic microorganisms.

Abstract
Tinnitus is a very frequent symptom affecting 10% of the general population. It corresponds to the perception of an internal noise that can severely impair the quality of life. Tinnitus management requires a multidisciplinary approach in which neuromodulation and neurosurgery tend to play major roles. Classification of tinnitus separates objective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus that can be heard or recorded) from the more frequent subjective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus only perceived by the patient). Objective tinnitus is either pulsatile synchronous with heartbeat or asynchronous. In the former, appropriate radiological testing should search for a vascular abnormality as well as other neurological diseases (intracranial hypertension, Arnold-Chiari malformation, vascular loops, etc.). Asynchronous objective tinnitus generally corresponds to muscular contractions that require specific management. The pathophysiology of subjective tinnitus is more complex, showing strong analogies with postamputation pain syndromes. After peripheral middle ear or inner ear damage, auditory deafferentation could result in hyperactivity and/or functional reorganization within central auditory and nonauditory structures. This could explain the persistence of tinnitus after total hearing amputation (e.g., translabyrinthine approach for vestibular schwannoma) and associated symptoms such as hyperacusis or anxiety and depression. This central model finds strong support in animal experiments and in functional neuroimagery (PET, fMRI, MEG). Since no etiologically based therapies are currently available, severe subjective tinnitus management only targets tinnitus tolerance with sound enrichment or cognitive behavior therapy. However, in the near future better knowledge of tinnitus pathophysiology and innovative therapeutic tools could emerge from neuromodulation techniques such as repeated transcranial magnetic or epidural electric stimulation.

Abstract
AIM Pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are among the most common causes of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the value of uterine artery Doppler in the second subsequent pregnancy in a low risk population for the prediction of pre-eclampsia and IUGR at any gestational age. METHODS Patients were randomized into two different groups: group A (nine patients) with positive notching both at week 20 and 24 in both pregnancies; group B (five patients) with bilateral positive notching at week 20 and 24 only in the second pregnancy. RESULTS During the second pregnancy IUGR rate was 11.1% in patients of group A and 60% in patients of group B (P=0.0949). During the first pregnancy IUGR reached 44.4% in group A and 0% in group B (P=0.2208). CONCLUSION In conclusion no significant increase of IUGR has been detected if the abnormal maternal Doppler ultrasound recurs in subsequent pregnancies.

Abstract
There is widespread recognition that consistency between research centres in the ways that patients with tinnitus are assessed and outcomes following interventions are measured would facilitate more effective co-operation and more meaningful evaluations and comparisons of outcomes. At the first Tinnitus Research Initiative meeting held in Regensburg in July 2006 an attempt was made through workshops to gain a consensus both for patient assessments and for outcome measurements. It is hoped that this will contribute towards better cooperation between research centres in finding and evaluating treatments for tinnitus by allowing better comparability between studies.

Abstract
Subjective (non-recordable) tinnitus is the conscious perception of a phantom sound, and a very frequent, sometimes disabling, condition. Even if subjective tinnitus is often related to peripheral hearing loss, neurophysiological and functional imaging studies provide increasing evidence for an involvement both auditory and non-auditory central nervous pathways in the generation of tinnitus and related distress. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed to relieve tinnitus by reducing auditory cortex hyperexcitability associated with this condition. This paper will review the first clinical results reported in auditory cortex rTMS studies, with special reference to the pathophysiology of tinnitus processing and the mechanisms of action of rTMS. Although rTMS appears to be a very promising tool for the diagnosis and the treatment of tinnitus patients, available knowledge is still very limited at the moment. Further basic research and clinical studies are needed in order to optimize the parameters of stimulation (stimulus frequency, cortical target definition) and to validate the application of this technique in the management of patients with disabling tinnitus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tinnitus is a common otologic symptom but, despite important advances in the evaluation and management of such symptom, ENTs often fail to address tinnitus properly. Some tinnitus patients report that tinnitus interferes with activities of daily living, such as reading, social interactions, sleep, concentrating on complex tasks. Anxiety and depression are current major disorders associated with tinnitus. Many theories exist regarding mechanisms of tinnitus origin. A number of publications favors the theory of discordant dysfunction of inner or outer hair cells of the organ of Corti. Nevertheless, some authors insist on the possible role of the central auditory pathways. Multiple functional connections between auditory system, limbic system, autonomic nervous system seem crucial in the development of tinnitus. The aim of this paper is to present a new approach in France of tinnitus treatment by cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). MATERIAL AND METHODS 96 patients with chronic and intense tinnitus were included in the study (38 females, 36 males, mean age 48 years). A CBT was developed after a clinical evaluation based on standardized questionnaires. RESULTS The two main results are: (i) the importance of anxiety and depression in this population, (ii) the amelioration of tinnitus perception in 750f the included patients. CONCLUSION CBT shows promise as a treatment of tinnitus-related distress.

Abstract
Second or more surgical procedures on parotid are usually difficult and may induce injury on the facial nerve. The authors report their experience about 42 patients. The choice between a total parotidectomy or a surgical excision of a tumor depends on the number of surgical procedure, the type of initial procedure and the histological type of the tumor. Second surgical procedures for a wrong initial diagnosis (11 cases) were always a total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. The risk of a partial or total facial palsy is higher after several recurrences (3 of 8 cases). The facial nerve had to be resected in 3 of 9 cases of malignant tumors recurrences. The initial treatment of a tumor of the parotid must be radical so it can prevent for further surgical procedures and then avoid a facial nerve injury.

Abstract
Spontaneous (SOEs) and evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOEs) were recorded in a group of preterm neonates (N = 134 ears) in order to study the basic properties of SOEs and EOEs as a function of gestational age. In the study, it was found that: 1. EOEs were recorded in 93% of the tested ears; 2. SOEs were recorded in 61% of the tested ears; 3. there were no statistically significant variations of EOE amplitude with gestational age; 4. EOE spectrum did not vary with age; and 5. the two main factors influencing EOE amplitude were the SOE presence and the fast Fourier transform spectrum, especially the lower limit of the spectrum. Thus, the maturation of outer hair cell properties appears to be complete at 32 weeks of gestational age. Because a number of infants at risk for hearing loss are preterm babies, screening for EOEs, an objective, rapid, and nontraumatic technique, may prove useful in evaluating peripheral auditory dysfunction in preterm neonates.

Objective low-frequency audiometry by distortion-product acoustic emissions. ARCHIVES OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY--HEAD & NECK SURGERY 1991; 117:1167-71. Abstract
The aim of this study was to measure distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOEs) in a clinical setting. First, DPOE input-output functions were automatically realized to determine the ratio of the pure tones (primaries) f2 and f1 that would elicit the most significant DPOE input-output function. The DPOE input-output functions presented two separate portions for the f2/f1 ratio, ranging from 1.18 to 1.26: (1) below 60-dB sound pressure level (SPL), a saturating portion with a DPOE detection threshold at 36-dB SPL; and (2) above 66-dB SPL, a linear portion. For other f2/f1 ratios, DPOE input-output functions had a more linear behavior. The DPOEs generated by primary intensities below 60-dB SPL, which show saturating behavior, probably have their origin in the properties of outer hair cells. This indicates that DPOE measurements in a clinical setting must be realized with precise stimulus values: (1) f2/f1 ratio near 1.22, and (2) primary intensities below 60-dB SPL. Second, DPOE input-output functions were realized for DPOEs varying from 707.5 to 342 Hz. No more saturating plateau could be observed with DPOEs below 512.5 Hz, suggesting that active mechanisms are absent below 725 Hz within the human cochlea. These data permit us to establish the bases of an objective low-frequency audiometric test.

Progressive hereditary deafness with predominant inner hair cell loss. THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF OTOLOGY 1991; 12:203-6. [PMID: 1882970] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 12/29/2022]
Abstract
This paper presents the first case of human genetic hearing loss due to predominant inner hair cell damage investigated by psychoacoustic audiometry, auditory brainstem responses (ABR), evoked acoustic emissions (EAEs), and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOEs). The genetic transmission was an autosomal dominant inheritance. The audiogram pattern was a dominant high-frequency hearing loss. EAE and DPOE properties were normal. Bronx waltzer mutant mouse with genetically determined predominant inner hair cell defects provide an interesting model to study this congenital deafness. This rare congenital deafness with predominant damage to inner hair cells cannot be detected by neonatal screening techniques using EAEs or DPOEs.
