Abstract
BACKGROUND Acetaminophen (ACT) has been studied in septic patients with detectable plasmatic levels of cell-free hemoglobin (Hb), where it demonstrated to inhibit the hemoprotein-mediated lipid peroxidation and oxidative injury, with a potential of beneficial effect on the endothelium. On the basis of this background, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sublingual microcirculation and the peripheral tissue perfusion before-and-after administration of ACT on clinical judgment in a cohort of febrile septic and septic shock patients. METHODS Prospective observational study. 50 adult septic and septic shocks treated with ACT for pyrexia, where the sublingual microcirculation and the peripheral tissue perfusion with Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and vascular occlusion test (VOT) were evaluated before ACT (t0), after 30 min (t1) and after 2 h (t2). Cell-free Hb and the markers of oxidative stress and endothelial damage were measured at t0 and t2. RESULTS The study showed a significant increase of the density of the perfused small and total vessels of the sublingual microcirculation 30 min after the infusion of ACT; it also showed an increase of the Microvascular Flow Index (MFI) and a decrease in the heterogeneity of the flow. At a peripheral muscular level, we found an acceleration in the reperfusion curve after VOT at t1, expression of a higher reactivity of the microvasculature. CONCLUSIONS ACT infusion did not show a clear correlation with cell-free Hb; however, it exhibited protective effect toward the microcirculation that was evident in particular in septic patients. This correlation merits further exploration.

Abstract
One of the main challenges to be faced in deep space missions is to protect the health and ensure the maximum efficiency of the crew by preparing methods of prevention and in situ diagnosis. Indeed, the hostile environment causes important health problems, ranging from muscle atrophy, osteopenia, and immunological and metabolic alterations due to microgravity, to an increased risk of cancer caused by exposure to radiation. It is, therefore, necessary to provide new methods for the real-time measurement of biomarkers suitable for deepening our knowledge of the effects of space flight on the balance of the immune system and for allowing the monitoring of the astronaut's health during long-term missions. APHRODITE will enable human space exploration because it fills this void that affects both missions in LEO and future missions to the Moon and Mars. Its scientific objectives are the design, production, testing, and in-orbit demonstration of a compact, reusable, and reconfigurable system for performing the real-time analysis of oral fluid samples in manned space missions. In the frame of this project, a crew member onboard the ISS will employ APHRODITE to measure the selected target analytes, cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), in oral fluid, in four (plus one additional desired session) separate experiment sessions. The paper addresses the design of the main subsystems of the analytical device and the preliminary results obtained during the first implementations of the device subsystems and testing measurements on Earth. In particular, the system design and the experiment data output of the lab-on-chip photosensors and of the front-end readout electronics are reported in detail along with preliminary chemical tests for the duplex competitive CL-immunoassay for the simultaneous detection of cortisol and DHEA-S. Different applications also on Earth are envisaged for the APHRODITE device, as it will be suitable for point-of-care testing applications (e.g., emergency medicine, bioterrorism, diagnostics in developing countries, etc.).

Abstract
Glaucoma represents a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by optic nerve damage and the slowly progressive death of retinal ganglion cells. Glaucoma is considered the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Pharmaceutical treatment of glaucoma is critical because of the properties of the ocular barrier that limit the penetration of drugs, resulting in lower systemic bioavailability. This behavior causes the need of frequent drug administration, which leads to deposition of concentrated solutions on the eye, causing toxic effects and cellular damage to the eye. To overcome these drawbacks, novel drug-delivery systems, such as liposomes, can play an important role in improving the therapeutic efficacy of antiglaucomatous drugs. In this work, liposomes were synthesized to improve various aspects, such as ocular barrier penetration, bioavailability, sustained release of the drug, targeting of the tissue, and reduction in intraocular pressure. Citicoline (CDP-choline; cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine) is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of cell membrane phospholipids, with neuroprotective and neuroenhancement properties, and it was used in the treatment on retinal function and neural conduction in the visual pathways of glaucoma patients. In this study, citicoline was loaded into the 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphocholine and cholesterol liposomal carrier to enhance its therapeutic effect. The citicoline encapsulation efficiency, drug release, and size analysis of the different liposome systems were investigated using dynamic light scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and ToF-SIMS experiments.

Abstract
Background and study aims Motorized spiral enteroscopy is proven to be effective in antegrade and retrograde enteroscopy. Nevertheless, little is known about its use in less common indications. The aim of this study was to identify new indications for the motorized spiral enteroscope. Methods Monocentric retrospective analysis of 115 patients who underwent enteroscopy using PSF-1 motorized spiral enteroscope between January 2020 and December 2022. Results A total of 115 patients underwent PSF-1 enteroscopy. 44 (38%) were antegrade procedures and 24 (21%) were retrograde procedures in patients with normal gastrointestinal anatomy with conventional enteroscopy indications. The remaining 47 (41%) patients underwent PSF-1 procedures for secondary less conventional indications: n=25 (22%) enteroscopy-assisted ERCP, n=8 (7%) endoscopy of the excluded stomach after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, n=7 (6%) retrograde enteroscopy after previous incomplete conventional colonoscopy and n=7 (6%) antegrade panenteroscopy of the entire small bowel. In this group of secondary indications, technical success rate was significantly lower (72.5%) as compared to technical success rates in the conventional groups (98-100%, p<0.001 Chi-square). Minor adverse events occurred in 17/115 patients (15%), all treated conservatively (AGREE I and II). Conclusion This study demonstrates the capabilities of PSF-1 motorized spiral enteroscope for secondary indications. PSF-1 is useful to complete colonoscopy in case of long redundant colon, to reach the excluded stomach after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, to perform unidirectional pan-enteroscopy and to perform ERCP in patients with surgically altered anatomy. However, technical success rates are lower as compared to conventional antegrade and retrograde enteroscopy procedures, with only minor adverse events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pharmacogenetics could represent a further resource to understand the interindividual heterogeneity of response of the host to sepsis and to provide a personalized approach to the critical care patient. METHODS Secondary analysis of data from the prospective observational study NCT02750163, in 50 adult septic and septic shock patients treated with Acetaminophen (ACT) for pyrexia. We investigated the presence of two polymorphisms, located respectively in the genes UGT1A1 and CYP3A5, that encode for proteins related to the hepatic metabolism of ACT. The main dependent variables explored were plasmatic concentration of ACT, body temperature and hepatic parameters. RESULTS 8% of the patients carried CYP3A5 rs776746 A/G genotypes and showed significantly higher plasma levels of ACT than GG wild type patients, and than patients with UGT1A1 rs8330 C/G genotypes. CONCLUSIONS Identifying specific genotypes of response to ACT may be helpful to guide a more personalized titration of therapy in sepsis and septic shock. CYP3A5 might be a good biomarker for ACT metabolism; however further studies are needed to confirm this result. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT02750163.

Abstract
We present six datasets containing telemetry data of the Mars Express Spacecraft (MEX), a spacecraft orbiting Mars operated by the European Space Agency. The data consisting of context data and thermal power consumption measurements, capture the status of the spacecraft over three Martian years, sampled at six different time resolutions that range from 1 min to 60 min. From a data analysis point-of-view, these data are challenging even for the more sophisticated state-of-the-art artificial intelligence methods. In particular, given the heterogeneity, complexity, and magnitude of the data, they can be employed in a variety of scenarios and analyzed through the prism of different machine learning tasks, such as multi-target regression, learning from data streams, anomaly detection, clustering, etc. Analyzing MEX’s telemetry data is critical for aiding very important decisions regarding the spacecraft’s status and operation, extracting novel knowledge, and monitoring the spacecraft’s health, but the data can also be used to benchmark artificial intelligence methods designed for a variety of tasks. Abstract
An easy and viable crosslinking procedure by click-chemistry (click-crosslinking) of hyaluronic acid (HA) was developed. In particular, the clickable propargyl groups of hyaluronane-based HA-FA-Pg graft copolymers showing low and medium molecular weight values were exploited in crosslinking by click-chemistry by using a hexa(ethylene glycol) spacer. The resulting HA-FA-HEG-CL materials showed an apparent lack of in vitro cytotoxic effects, tuneable water affinity, and rheological properties according to the crosslinking degree that suggests their applicability in different biomedical fields.

Abstract
The coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected hundreds of millions of people worldwide: in most of cases children and young people developed asymptomatic or pauci-symptomatic clinical pictures. However authors have showed that there are some categories of childhood more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection such as newborns or children with comorbidities. We report for the first time to the best of our knowledge about microvascular dysfunction in three pediatric clinical cases who developed COVID-19 infections with need of pediatric critical care. We found that sublingual microcirculation is altered in children with severe COVID-19 infection. Our findings confirmed most of data already observed by other authors in adult population affected by severe COVID-19 infection, but with distinct characteristics than microcirculation alterations previous observed in a clinical case of MIS-C. However we cannot establish direct correlation between microcirculation analysis and clinical or laboratory parameters in our series, by our experience we have found that sublingual microcirculation analysis allow clinicians to report directly about microcirculation dysfunction in COVID-19 patients and it could be a valuable bedside technique to monitor thrombosis complication in this population.

Abstract
Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) are exposed to the damaging effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation. One of the most critical and sensitive districts of an organism is the eye, particularly the retina, and > 50% of astronauts develop a complex of alterations designated as spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. However, the pathogenesis of this condition is not clearly understood. In the current study, we aimed to explore the cellular and molecular effects induced in the human retinal pigment ARPE-19 cell line by their transfer to and 3-day stay on board the ISS in the context of an experiment funded by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana. Treatment of cells on board the ISS with the well-known bioenergetic, antioxidant, and antiapoptotic coenzyme Q10 was also evaluated. In the ground control experiment, the cells were exposed to the same conditions as on the ISS, with the exception of microgravity and radiation. The transfer of ARPE-19 retinal cells to the ISS and their living on board for 3 days did not affect cell viability or apoptosis but induced cytoskeleton remodeling consisting of vimentin redistribution from the cellular boundaries to the perinuclear area, underlining the collapse of the network of intermediate vimentin filaments under unloading conditions. The morphological changes endured by ARPE-19 cells grown on board the ISS were associated with changes in the transcriptomic profile related to the cellular response to the space environment and were consistent with cell dysfunction adaptations. In addition, the results obtained from ARPE-19 cells treated with coenzyme Q10 indicated its potential to increase cell resistance to damage.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate obstetric outcome in women with endometriosis who conceive naturally and receive standard obstetric care in Italy. Methods Cases were consecutive women with endometriosis managed in eleven Italian referral centers. Controls were women in whom endometriosis was excluded. All women filled in a questionnaire addressing previous natural pregnancies. Marginal logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate the impact of endometriosis on obstetric outcome. A post hoc analysis was performed within the endometriosis group comparing women with severe adenomyosis versus women with absent or mild adenomyosis. Results Three hundred and fifty-five pregnancies in endometriosis group and 741 pregnancies in control group were included. Women with endometriosis had a higher risk of preterm delivery < 34 weeks (6.4% vs 2.8%, OR 2.42, 95% CI 1.22–4.82), preterm delivery < 37 weeks (17.8% vs 9.7%, OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.23–3.19), and neonatal admission to Intensive Care Unit (14.1% vs 7.0%, OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.23–3.36). At post hoc analysis, women with endometriosis and severe adenomyosis had an increased risk of placenta previa (23.1% vs 1.8%, OR 16.68, 95% CI 3.49–79.71), cesarean delivery (84.6% vs 38.9%, OR 8.03, 95% CI 1.69–38.25) and preterm delivery < 34 weeks (23.1% vs 5.7%, OR 5.52, 95% CI 1.38–22.09). Conclusion Women with endometriosis who conceive naturally have increased risk of preterm delivery and neonatal admission to intensive care unit. When severe adenomyosis is coexistent with endometriosis, women may be at increased risk of placenta previa and cesarean delivery. Trial registration Clinical trial registration number: NCT03354793.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Published reports on tocilizumab in COVID-19 pneumonitis show conflicting results due to weak designs or heterogeneity in critical methodological issues. METHODS This open-label trial, structured according to Simon's optimal design, aims to identify factors predicting which patients could benefit from anti-IL6 strategies and to enhance the design of unequivocal and reliable future randomized trials. A total of 46 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia needing of oxygen therapy to maintain SO2 > 93% and with recent worsening of lung function received a single infusion of tocilizumab. Clinical and biological markers were measured to test their predictive values. Primary end point was early and sustained clinical response. RESULTS Twenty-one patients fulfilled pre-defined response criteria. Lower levels of IL-6 at 24 h after tocilizumab infusion (P = 0.049) and higher baseline values of PaO2/FiO2 (P = 0.008) predicted a favourable response. CONCLUSIONS Objective clinical response rate overcame the pre-defined threshold of 30%. Efficacy of tocilizumab to improve respiratory function in patients selected according to our inclusion criteria warrants investigations in randomized trials.

Abstract
Novel coronavirus 2019 is a single-stranded, ribonucleic acid virus that has led to an international pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019. Clinical data from the Chinese outbreak have been reported, but experiences and recommendations from clinical practice during the Italian outbreak have not. We report the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak on regional and national healthcare infrastructure. We also report on recommendations based on clinical experiences of managing patients throughout Italy. In particular, we describe key elements of clinical management, including: safe oxygen therapy; airway management; personal protective equipment; and non-technical aspects of caring for patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019. Only through planning, training and team working will clinicians and healthcare systems be best placed to deal with the many complex implications of this new pandemic.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the potential of a technology platform based on hyaluronan copolymers grafted with propargylated ferulate fluorophores (HA-FA-Pg) in the development of drug delivery systems, the propargyl groups of HA-FA-Pg derivatives were employed with oleic acid (OA) or stearic acid (SA) residues across a biocompatible hexa(ethylene glycol) (HEG) spacer. The designed materials (i.e., HA-FA-HEG-OA or HA-FA-HEG-SA) showed clear-cut aggregation features in an aqueous environment, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), generating nanoaggregate systems. In fact, HA-FA-HEG-OA and HA-FA-HEG-SA derivatives showed the property to create self-assembled cytocompatible nanostructured aggregates in water, thanks to the simultaneous presence of hydrophilic portions in the polymeric backbone, such as hyaluronic acid, and hydrophobic portions in the side chains. Furthermore, the designed materials interact with living cells showing a high degree of cytocompatibility. The potential ability of nanosystems to load pharmacologically active molecules was assessed by the physical entrapment of olanzapine into both polymeric systems. The drug loading evaluation demonstrated that the nanoparticles are able to incorporate a good quantity of olanzapine, as well as improve drug solubility, release profile, and cytocompatibility.

Abstract
Viscosupplementation, i.e. intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid derivatives, is considered as the most effective treatment for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Even if hyaluronic acid is still considered as the gold standard, research is now focusing on the development of new products with enhanced injectability and yet reasonable viscoelastic behavior for OA treatment. A Gellan Gum (GG) hydrogel was synthesized and coated with crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to protect the polysaccharide from degradation during sterilization and improve its performance for the foreseen application. Thermal analyses indicated that mixed hydrogel showed a higher degree of structuring than the bare polysaccharide core without losing its swelling properties, thanks to the hydrophylicity of both coating and cross-linking agent. The PVA coating increased elastic and viscous moduli of the polysaccharide core conferring it a higher resistance to shear and compression and better thixotropic properties. Despite the double crosslinking, hydrogel was injectable. Cytocompatibility towards chondrocytes was verified.

Abstract
A new polymer brush was synthesized by spontaneous polymerization of benzofulvene macromonomer 6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k bearing a nona(ethylene glycol) side chain linked to the 3-phenylindene scaffold by means of a triazole heterocycle. The polymer structure was studied by SEC-MALS, NMR spectroscopy, and MALDI-TOF MS techniques, and the results supported the role of oligomeric initiatory species in the spontaneous polymerization of polybenzofulvene derivatives. The aggregation features of high molecular weight poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE were investigated by pyrene fluorescence analysis, dynamic light scattering studies, and transmission electron microscopy, which suggested a tendency towards the formation of spherical objects showing dimensions in the range of 20-200 nm. Moreover, poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE showed an interesting cytocompatibility in the whole concentration range tested that, besides its aggregation features, makes this polybenzofulvene brush a good polymer candidate for nanoencapsulation and delivery of drug molecules. Finally, the photo-physical features of poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE could allow the biodistribution of the resulting drug delivery systems to be monitored by fluorescence microscopy techniques.

Abstract
The products and by-products of Olea europaea L.: olive fruits (primary agricultural product), oils (primary agro-industrial product), pomaces (agro-industrial processing by-product), and leaves (agricultural practices by-product), are promising sources of bioactive compounds. In the present study, qualitative and quantitative analyses of selected bioactive components in olive fruits, oils, and pomaces were performed. Total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity were analyzed in all samples (humid pomaces 2015: TPP, 26.0 ± 1.5-43.7 ± 3.0 g(GAEq)/kg DW; TEAC/ABTS, 189.5 ± 3.7-388.1 ± 12.0 mmol(Trx)kg DW). Radical (DPPH) quenching potential was analyzed via photometric and EPR methods, obtaining Vis/EPR signal ratio by 1.05 ± 0.45 and 1.66 ± 0.39 for fruits and pomaces, respectively. Through HPLC-UV and HPLC-MS/MS techniques, oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, as well as selected hydroxycinnamic acids and flavonoids, were identified and quantified in olive fruits and pomaces. The main components were rutin, luteolin, and chlorogenic acid. Cytotoxic assay on fibroblast cells revealed toxic effects for selected extracts at highest tested concentrations (5%).

Abstract
In this study, we developed and validated a new proposed parameter quantifying the interaction strength between natural and/or synthetic molecules with paramagnetic metal ions. The Metal ion Recognition Index, Miri, is a quantitative parameter to describe the proton environment and to define their involvement in the inner and/or outer sphere of the paramagnetic metal ion. The method is based on the analysis of NMR proton spin-lattice relaxation rates of a specific ligand in both the diamagnetic and paramagnetic conditions. The proposed procedure is also useful to calculate the ligand proton spin-lattice relaxation rate in the paramagnetic bound conditions, which is typically very difficult to determine experimentally. Miri was used to compare the ligand proton involvement toward different paramagnetic species, in particular the Copper(II)-Piroxicam system. Copper(II)-Piroxicam complex is one of the most active anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic species. Miri provides an opportunity to improve our knowledge of metal-ligand complexes that play a fundamental role in bioinorganic interactions.

Abstract
Tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein are among the major phenolic compounds in fruits, leaves and oils from Olea europaea L. These natural antioxidants molecules revealed several beneficial effects on human health, but a low bioavailability and accessibility to targeted site. Liposomes are drug/nutraceutical delivery carriers, used for driving bioactive molecules to desired target tissues, decreasing potential side effects and protecting the encapsulated molecule from enzymatic metabolic processes. In this study, zwitterionic liposomes containing tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein were synthesized and characterized for their size and surface charge. Particular attention was devoted to the determination of encapsulation efficiency (EE%), quantifying the loaded Tyr, HTyr and Ole amount, by using three different techniques: direct UV spectrophotometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity assay. The results revealed higher EE% for oleuropein. Cyto-toxicity and cyto-compatibility of liposomes were also tested on human chondrocyte cells.

Abstract
A thixotropic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel, containing a hydrophilic poly-vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) core, was obtained in order to develop a preformed 3D network able to maintain injectability. PVA was mixed with PVP in two different molar ratios (1:1 and 1:3) and chemically cross-linked using trisodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), which is able to react only with PVA component. A combination of Time of Flight- Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), elemental analysis and UV spectroscopy permitted to determine both the cross-linking arm length and the crosslinking degree. Hydrogels were characterized in terms of swelling pressurization, rheological and mechanical behaviour. In particular, the viscoelastic behaviour of the hydrogel was analysed in shear and compression stress under dynamic conditions and compared with the performance of healthy human nucleus pulposus. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that the scaffold obtained mixing PVA and PVP in a molar ratio 1:1 can be considered a promising material to be utilised in the replacement of nucleus pulposus.

Abstract
The technique of grafting side chains onto a linear polymeric backbone is commonly used to confer to the new polymeric material with desired properties, such as tunable solubility, ionic charge, biocompatibility, or specific interactions with biological systems. In this paper, two new polybenzofulvene backbones were assembled by spontaneous polymerization of the appropriate benzofulvene monomers (4,6-PO-BF3k and 4',6-PO-BF3k) bearing two clickable propargyloxy groups in different positions of the 3-phenylindene scaffold. Poly-4,6-PO-BF3k and poly-4',6-PO-BF3k were grafted with monomethyl oligo(ethylene glycol) (MOEG) to prepare two new polybenzofulvene brushes (i.e., poly-4,6-MOEG-9-TM-BF3k and poly-4',6-MOEG-9-TM-BF3k) by means of a "grafting onto" approach, that were characterized from the point of view of their macromolecular features, aggregation liability, and in a preliminary evaluation of biocompatibility. The obtained results make these PEGylated polybenzofulvene brushes (PPBFB) derivatives potentially useful as nanocarriers for nanoencapsulation and delivery of drug molecules.

Abstract
Samples of sweet and dessert wines, Vin Santo (VSR) from Malvasia grapes, and Granello (GR) from Sauvignon grapes were collected and analyzed for the content of selected macro- and micro-nutrients (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) and of Pb. GR wines had low levels for Fe, Cu and Zn, when compared to VSR and in particular Zn was two orders of magnitude lower. Methods to decrease the content of Zn and Cu in VSR, as well as those for reducing, at the same time, the concentrations of Ca, Mg and K in both VSR and GR, to avoid the formation of opalescence and depots of metal tartrates, were studied. Synthetic hydrogels containing l-histidine residue were tested. The overall relative lowering effects were by ca 4, 23, and 12% for K, Mg and Ca contents, and ca 6, 27 and 10%, for Mn, Cu and Zn contents, in GR wine samples. Commercial ion exchange resin Lanxess Lewatit L-207 and L-208 were then assayed, being legally allowed in the agro-food industry. The L-207 resin revealed great lowering effects on the concentrations of Mn, Cu and Zn, being 75, 91 and 97%, respectively, in VSR wines and 77, 76 and 92%, respectively, in GR wines. The content of Zn was reduced from 49.3 ± 1.2 mg/L in the original wine, down to 1.1 ± 0.1 mg/L, within 48 h soaking. The effects on the character of the dessert wines by the resin L-207 was also taken under control, measuring pH and color index. The color index changed by ca 15% and pH by ca 6% upon treatment of VSR wine with L-207 resins (48 h).

Abstract
Spontaneous polymerization is an intriguing phenomenon in which pure monomers begin their polymerization without initiators or catalysts. Previously, 3-phenylbenzofulvene monomers were found to polymerize spontaneously after solvent removal. Here, eight new 3-substituted benzofulvene monomers 1a⁻h were synthesized in order to investigate the effects of differently substituted aromatic rings in position 3 of the benzofulvene scaffold on spontaneous polymerization. The newly synthesized monomers maintained the tendency toward spontaneous polymerization. However, monomer 1a, bearing an ortho-methoxy substituted phenyl, polymerized hardly, thus producing low polymerization yields, inhomogeneous structure, and low molecular weight of the obtained polymeric material. This result suggested the importance of the presence of hydrogen atoms in the 2'-position to achieve productive interactions among the monomers in the recognition step preluding the spontaneous polymerization and among the monomeric units in the polybenzofulvene backbones. Moreover, this study paves the way to modify the pendant rings in position 3 of the indene scaffold to synthesize new polybenzofulvene derivatives variously decorated.

Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of some polybenzofulvene derivatives bearing bithiophene (BT) or terthiophene (TT) side chains was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Very interestingly, the presence of unsubstituted terminal thiophene moieties allowed poly-6-BT-BF3k and poly-6-TT-BF3k to be cross-linked by electrochemical procedures. Conductive films were obtained by electrodeposition from solutions of these polymers onto electrode surfaces through the formation of covalent cross-linking due to dimerization (i.e. electrochemical oxidation) of the BT or TT side chains. The films showed electrochromic features and switched from yellow-orange (neutral) to green (positively charged) by switching the potential, and were stable to tenths of cycles, without degradation in the wet state in the electrolyte solution. Finally, the thin film obtained by electrodeposition of poly-6-TT-BF3k on a indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate showed in the neutral state a significantly red-shifted photoluminescence (PL) emission (∼40 nm red-shifted with respect to that of the corresponding film obtained by casting procedures), which was consistent with the presence of more conjugated moieties produced by the oxidative dimerization of the TT side chains. The innovative architecture and the easy preparation could lead to a broad range of applications in optoelectronics and bioelectronics for these cross-linked hybrid materials based on π-stacked polybenzofulvene backbones bearing oligothiophene side chains. Abstract
In order to develop a technology platform based on two natural compounds from biorenewable resources, a short series of hyaluronan (HA) copolymers grafted with propargylated ferulic acid (HA–FA–Pg) were designed and synthesized to show different grafting degree values and their optical properties were characterized in comparison with reference compounds containing the same ferulate fluorophore. Interestingly, these studies revealed that the ferulate fluorophore was quite sensitive to the restriction of intramolecular motion and its introduction into the rigid HA backbone, as in HA–FA–Pg graft copolymers, led to higher photoluminescence quantum yield values than those obtained with the isolated fluorophore. Thus, the propargyl groups of HA–FA–Pg derivatives were exploited in the coupling with oleic acid through a biocompatible nona(ethylene glycol) spacer as an example of the possible applications of this technology platform. The resulting HA–FA–NEG–OA materials showed self-assembling capabilities in aqueous environment. Furthermore, HA–FA–NEG–OA derivatives have been shown to interact with phospholipid bilayers both in liposomes and living cells, retaining their fluorogenic properties and showing a high degree of cytocompatibility and for this reason they were proposed as potential biocompatible self-assembled aggregates forming new materials for biomedical applications. A new technology platform has been developed with hyaluronan playing the role of the macromolecular carrier and ferulate the central role of natural small molecule fluorogenic clickable linker.![]()

Abstract
We present NMR spectra of remote-magnetized deuterated water, detected in an unshielded environment by means of a differential atomic magnetometer. The measurements are performed in a μT field, while pulsed techniques are applied-following the sample displacement-in a 100 μT field, to tip both D and H nuclei by controllable amounts. The broad-band nature of the detection system enables simultaneous detection of the two signals and accurate evaluation of their decay times. The outcomes of the experiment demonstrate the potential of ultra-low-field NMR spectroscopy in important applications where the correlation between proton and deuteron spin-spin relaxation rates as a function of external parameters contains significant information.

Abstract
Natural antioxidants show many pharmacological properties, but poor solubility and inability to cross cell membrane. Liposomes are biocompatible and phospholipid vesicles able to carry hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and amphiphilic molecules. This paper focus on the synthesis of anionic, cationic and zwitterionic liposomes, loaded with quercetin or rutin, and on the evaluation of their cytotoxicity and protective effects against oxidative stress. Chemical characterization was obtained by dynamic light scattering and z-potential experiments. In vitro cell behavior was evaluated by Neutral Red Uptake test. All liposomes, empty and loaded with antioxidants, are stable. The cytotoxicity of both quercetin and rutin encapsulated in zwitterionic and anionic liposomes is higher than that of their solutions. Quercetin and rutin loaded in cationic liposomes are able to inhibit the toxic effect of empty liposomes. The encapsulation of rutin at 5.0×10-5 and 5.0×10-4M, in zwitterionic and anionic liposomes, protects fibroblasts by H2O2 treatment, while the loading with quercetin does not have effect on improving cell viability. All data suggest that the tested liposomes are stable and able to include quercetin and rutin. The liposomes encapsulation of antioxidants makes easier their internalization by cells. Moreover, zwitterionic and anionic liposomes loaded with rutin protect cells by oxidative stress. Liposomes stability together with their good in vitro cytocompatibility, both empty and loaded with antioxidant molecules, makes these systems suitable candidates as drug delivery systems. Moreover, the encapsulation of rutin, is able to protect cells by oxidative stress.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a generic platform for autonomous medical monitoring and diagnostics. We validated the platform in the context of arrhythmia detection with publicly available databases. The big advantage of this platform is its capacity to deal with various types of physiological signals. Many pre-processing steps are performed to bring the input information into a uniform state that will be explored by a machine learning algorithm. Since this block plays a crucial role in the entire processing pipeline, three different methods were evaluated for detection and classification of anomalies. The results presented in this work are validated on cardiac beats, where the highest accuracy was obtained on the classification of normal beats (94%). On the other hand, atrial fibrillation and premature ventricular contraction beats were classified with an accuracy of 78%.

Abstract
In order to obtain new fluorophores potentially useful in imidazole labeling and subsequent conjugation, a small series of Morita-Baylis-Hillman acetates (3a-c) was designed, synthesized, and reacted with imidazole. The optical properties of the corresponding imidazole derivatives 4a-c were analyzed both in solution and in the solid state. Although the solutions display a very weak emission, the powders show a blue emission, particularly enhanced in the case of compound 4c possessing two methoxy groups in the cinnamic scaffold. The photophysical study confirmed the hypothesis that the molecular rigidity of the solid state enhances the emission properties of these compounds by triggering the restriction of intramolecular motions, paving the way for their applications in fluorogenic labeling.
