Identifying Performance Descriptors in CO2 Hydrogenation over Iron-Based Catalysts Promoted with Alkali Metals

Alkali metal promoters have been widely employed for preparation of heterogeneous catalysts used in many industrially important reactions. However, the fundamentals of their effects are usually difficult to access. Herein, we unravel mechanistic and kinetic aspects of the role of alkali metals in CO₂ hydrogenation over Fe-based catalysts through state-of-the-art characterization techniques, spatially resolved steady-state and transient kinetic analyses. The promoters affect electronic properties of iron in iron carbides. These carbide characteristics determine catalyst ability to activate H₂ , CO and CO₂ . The Allen scale electronegativity of alkali metal promoter was successfully correlated with the rates of CO₂ hydrogenation to higher hydrocarbons and CH₄ as well as with the rate constants of individual steps of CO or CO₂ activation. The derived knowledge can be valuable for designing and preparing catalysts applied in other reactions where such promoters are also used.

Structural aspects of displacive transformations: what can optical microscopy contribute? Dehydration of Sm2(C2O4)3·10H2O as a case study

For martensitic transformations the macroscopic crystal strain is directly related to the corresponding structural rearrangement at the microscopic level. In situ optical microscopy observations of the interface migration and the change in crystal shape during a displacive single crystal to single crystal transformation can contribute significantly to understanding the mechanism of the process at the atomic scale. This is illustrated for the dehydration of samarium oxalate decahydrate in a study combining optical microscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Isostructural crystal hydrates of rare-earth metal oxalates at high pressure: from strain anisotropy to dehydration

The crystal structures of a series of isostructural rare-earth metal oxalates, (REE)2(C2O4)3·10H2O (REE=Sm, Y) and a 1:1 YSm(C2O4)3·10H2O solid solution, have been studied in situ by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The structures were followed from ambient pressure to 6 GPa in a DAC with paraffin as the hydrostatic fluid. Bulk compressibilities, anisotropic lattice strain on hydrostatic compression and the corresponding changes in the atomic coordinates were followed. Discontinuities/sharp changes in the slopes of the pressure dependences of volume and selected cell parameters have been observed for yttrium-containing salts at ~3.5 GPa. This may be related to the re-distribution of water molecules within the crystal structure. Y2(C2O4)3·10H2O undergoes a partial dehydration at 1 GPa, forming monoclinic Y2(C2O4)3·6H2O as single-crystalline inclusions in the original phase.

Isoenergetic Polymorphism: The Puzzle of Tolazamide as a Case Study

In the present case study of tolazamide we illustrate how many seemingly contradictory results that have been obtained from experimental observations and theoretical calculations can finally start forming a consistent picture: a "puzzle put together". For many years, tolazamide was considered to have no polymorphs. This made this drug substance unique among the large family of sulfonylureas, which was known to be significantly more prone to polymorphism than many other organic compounds. The present work employs a broad and in-depth analysis that includes the use of optical microscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopies, DSC, semiempirical PIXEL calculations and DFT of three polymorphs of tolazamide. This case study shows how the polymorphs of a molecular crystal can be overlooked even if discovered serendipitously on one of numerous crystallizations, and how very different molecular packings can be practically isoenergetic but still crystallize quite selectively and transform one into another irreversibly upon heating.
