Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evaluation of the eruption of mandibular third molars in orthopantomograms (OPGs) is a method of forensic age assessment. The objective of our study was to provide valid reference data for this trait within a population of black South Africans. The study was guided by the criteria for reference studies in age assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A study population from Pretoria, South Africa comprising 670 OPGs obtained from 338 black females and 332 black males aged between 15.00 and 25.97 years was analysed. All OPGs were performed for medical indication during the period from 2011 to 2022 and were retrospectively evaluated. From the 670 OPGs, a total of 1021 mandibular third molars were evaluated. The assessment of mandibular third molars was conducted using the staging scale presented by Olze et al. in 2012. Two experienced dentists evaluated the OPGs independently of each other. If the two examiners diverged in their assessments, a consensus stage was assigned. RESULTS As expected, the mean, median and minimal age increased with higher stages for both teeth and both sexes. The minimum age recorded for stage D, indicating complete tooth eruption, was 15.79 years in females and 16.62 years in males. CONCLUSION As it is the case for previous reference studies in other countries, placing exclusive reliance on the evaluation of mandibular third molar eruption is inadequate for ascertaining the age of majority among Black South Africans. Future studies need to examine if our results are transferable to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
Forensic age assessment in the living can provide legal certainty when an individual's chronological age is unknown or when age-related information is questionable. An established method involves assessing the eruption of mandibular third molars through dental panoramic radiographs (PAN). In age assessment procedures, the respective findings are compared to reference data. The objective of this study was to generate new reference data in line with the required standards for mandibular third molar eruption within a German population. For this purpose, 605 PANs from 302 females and 303 males aged 15.04 to 25.99 years were examined. The PANs were acquired between 2013 and 2020, and the development of the mandibular third molars was rated independently by two experienced examiners using the Olze et al. staging scale from 2012. In case of disagreement in the assigned ratings, a consensus was reached through arbitration. While the mean, median and minimum ages were observed to increase with each stage of mandibular third molar eruption according to the Olze method, there was considerable overlap in the distribution of age between the stages. The minimum age for stage D, which corresponds to complete tooth eruption, was 16.1 years for females and 17.1 years for males. Thus, the completion of mandibular third molar eruption was found in both sexes before reaching the age of 18. In all individuals who had at least one tooth with completed eruption and who were younger than 17.4 years of age (n = 10), mineralization of the teeth in question was not complete. Based on our findings, the feature of assessing mandibular third molar eruption in PAN cannot be relied upon for determining age of majority.

Abstract
Double death, i.e., two bodies at a scene, is relatively rare. The double death from natural causes of two close persons is called Philemon and Baucis death in the medicolegal literature. Despite being mentioned for the first time more than 50 years ago, all detailed case reports on this case constellation are from the last 15 years. A comprehensive review of the literature on this phenomenon has not yet been published. In this article, we review the available literature on Philemon and Baucis death. Pathophysiologically, it can be assumed that this phenomenon is a sub-form of so-called psychogenic death. Therefore, we equally review the literature on sudden cardiac death due to acute psychological stress.

Abstract
After dentition is complete, degenerative tooth characteristics can be used for dental age assessment. Radiological assessment of the visibility of the root canals of the mandibular third molars in dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) is known to be one such suitable feature. Essentially, two different stage classifications are available for evaluating the visibility of the root canals of mandibular third molars in the DPR. The aim of this study was to determine if one method outperforms the other. Therefore, the 2010 method of Olze et al. was directly compared to the 2017 method of Lucas et al. in the 2020 modification of Al Qattan et al. To this end, 233 DPRs from 116 females and 117 males aged 20.0 to 40.9 years were evaluated by three independent experienced examiners. In addition, one examiner ran two independent evaluations. Correlation between age and stage was investigated, and the inter- and intra-rater reliability was estimated for both methods. Correlation between age and stage was higher with the Olze method (Spearman rho 0.388 [95% CI 0.309, 0.462], males and 0.283 [95% CI 0.216, 0.357], females) than the Lucas method (0.212 [95% CI 0.141, 0.284], males and 0.265 [95% CI 0.193, 0.340], females). The intra-rater repeatability of the Olze method (Krippendorff's α = 0.576 [95% CI 0.508, 0.644], males and α = 0.592 [95% CI 0.523, 0.661], females) was greater than that for the Lucas method (intra-rater α = 0.422 [95% CI 0.382, 0.502], males and α = 0.516 [95% CI 0.523, 0.661], females). Inter-rater reproducibility was also greater for the Olze method (α = 0.542 [95% CI 0.463, 0.620], males and α = 0.533 [95% CI 0.451, 0.615], females) compared to the Lucas method (α = 0.374 [95% CI 0.304, 0.443], males and α = 0.432 [95% CI 0.359, 0.505], females). The method of Olze et al. was found to present marginal advantages to the Lucas et al. method across all examinations and may be a more appropriate method for application in future studies.

Abstract
This is the fourth and final paper in a series related to the analysis of articles published in this journal during its first 100 years of activity. This article covers the time span from 1990 to 2022. It is important to note that, given the period covered by this analysis, it does not aim to provide a historical overview but rather an examination of the most recent trends in our discipline compared to the past. Between 1990 (Volume 104) and 2022 (Volume 136), 4004 articles were published in the International Journal of Legal Medicine (IJLM) across 33 volumes. This corresponds to 53% of all the articles published since the launch of the journal. When compared to the period from 1970 to 1990, some categories no longer appear to be as relevant (e.g., sexual medicine, 1 article; social medicine, 0 articles; biography, 3 articles; history, 4 articles). Conversely, the most recent period has shown an increasing importance in forensic genetics (1388 articles) and the emergence of new significant topics that merit their own classification, such as age estimation (286 articles), forensic anthropology (189 articles), forensic imaging (150 articles), and forensic entomology (90 articles).

Abstract
Various staging scales have been proposed for the assessment of the visibility of the periodontal ligament space of mandibular third molars on dental panoramic radiographs (PANs) for forensic age assessment in living individuals. However, up to now, there has been no systematic comparison between these staging scales available. We directly compared the 2010 staging scale proposed by Olze et al. with the 2017 staging by Lucas et al. and the 2020 staging by Guo et al. in a German study population. We evaluated 233 PANs from 115 females and 118 males aged 20.0 to 40.9 years using three independent examiners, with one examiner conducting two assessments. We examined the correlation between age and stage, as well as the inter- and intra-rater reliabilities. While the point estimates for the correlation coefficient and the reliability measures were lowest for the Guo scale and highest for the Olze scale, confidence intervals showed a large overlap, particularly for the scales of Olze et al. and Lucas et al. The correlation coefficients between stage and age were consistently lower in females than in males across all methods. In summary, we showed that the staging scales of Olze et al. and Lucas et al. were very similar. The Olze method showed higher point estimates across all analyses, and because there are more reference data available for this method, we argue that it should be preferred as the method of choice for further studies in the field. However, Guo method could be considered for instances, in which the inter-radicular periodontal ligament is not evaluable.

Abstract
The evaluation of third molar eruption in dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) constitutes an evidence-based approach for forensic age assessment in living individuals. Existing methodologies involve staging morphological radiographic findings and comparing them to reference populations. Conversely, the existing literature presents an alternative method where the distance between third molars and the occlusal plane is measured on dental plaster models. The aim of this study was to adapt this measurement principle for DPRs and to determine correlation between eruption and chronological age. A total of 423 DPRs, encompassing 220 females and 203 males aged 15 to 25 years, were examined, including teeth 38 [FDI] and 48. Two independent examiners conducted the measurements, with one examiner providing dual assessments. Ultimately, a quotient was derived by comparing orthogonal distances from the mesial cementoenamel junctions of the second and third molars to a simplified radiological occlusal plane. This quotient was subsequently correlated with the individual's age. We estimated correlations between age and quotients, as well as inter- and intra-rater reliability. Correlation coefficients (Spearman's rho) between measurements and individuals' ages ranged from 0.555 to 0.597, conditional on sex and tooth. Intra-rater agreement (Krippendorf's alpha) ranged from 0.932 to 0.991, varying according to the tooth and sex. Inter-rater agreement ranged from 0.984 to 0.992, with distinctions drawn for different teeth and sex. Notably, all observer agreement values fell within the "very good" range. In summary, assessing the distance of third molars from a simplified occlusal plane in DPRs emerges as a new and promising method for evaluating eruption status in forensic age assessment. Subsequent reference studies should validate these findings.

Abstract
Evaluation of third molar eruption represents an established method for age assessment of living individuals. Different classification systems are available for the radiological assessment of third molar eruption. The aim of this study was to identify the most accurate and reliable classification system for the mandibular third molar eruption on orthopantomograms (OPG). We compared the method of Olze et al. (2012) with the method of Willmot et al. (2018) and a newly derived classification system using OPGs from 211 individuals aged 15-25 years. The assessments were performed by three experienced examiners. One examiner evaluated all radiographs twice. The correlation between age and stage was investigated and the inter- and intra-rater reliability was estimated for all three methods. Correlation between stage and age was similar between classification systems, although higher in the data from males (Spearman's rho ranging from 0.568 to 0.583) than from females (0.440 to 0.446). Inter- and intra-rater reliability measures were similar across methods and invariant on sex, with overlapping confidence intervals, although the highest point estimates for both intra- and inter-rater reliability were for the method by Olze et al. with Krippendorf's alpha values of 0.904 (95% confidence interval 0.854, 0.954) and 0.797 (95% confidence interval 0.744, 0.850). It was concluded that the method of Olze et al. from 2012 is a reliable method for practical application and future studies.

Abstract
The interruption of the publication of the Deutsche Zeitschrift für die gesamte gerichtliche Medizin due to the war ended with volume 39 for the years 1948/1949. Until volume 66/1969, the journal appeared unchanged under the historical title. The 912 publications contained in the 28 volumes of these two decades cover topics from the main fields of forensic medicine, but also from related and unrelated disciplines. The topic-specific analysis of the publications shows a shift of the research focus in the German institutes since the post-war period. This is most evident in the decline in the number of publications from the fields of scientific and technical criminalistics as well as forensic psychiatry and psychology. An opposite trend with a significant increase in scientific papers was observed in alcohology, forensic genetics and traffic medicine. While the evaluated publications on most topics contain new findings that are still valid today, the use of blood group characteristics for forensic purposes came to an end as a result of the introduction of DNA analysis.

Abstract
From volume 67 (1970) onwards, the journal appeared under the new bilingual title Zeitschrift für Rechtsmedizin-Journal of Legal Medicine. The editorial board was expanded and internationalised. From 1970 to 1990, 1416 articles were published in 36 volumes. 1036 articles were in German and 380 in English. The authors of 411 articles came from non-German-speaking countries. Compared to the periods under review in the first two parts of our article series, the proportion of papers on forensic genetics increased significantly between 1970 and 1990, with a small increase in publications on the identification of unknown dead bodies. An opposite trend was observed in the articles on forensic psychiatry and psychology, sexual medicine and social medicine. This development reflects a further sharpening of the discipline's profile.

Hintergrund
Ein rechtlich zulässiges medizinisches Altersfeststellungsverfahren mit möglichst schonenden und zuverlässigen Methoden bei unbegleiteten und fraglich minderjährigen Ausländern ist erforderlich, um den tatsächlich Minderjährigen den für sie gesetzlich vorgesehenen besonderen Schutz zukommen zu lassen.
Ziel der Arbeit
Studiendesign und erste Ergebnisse einer Studie zur forensischen Altersdiagnostik mittels Niederfeld-Magnetresonanztomographie werden vorgestellt.
Material und Methoden
Geplant ist die prospektive Untersuchung von 650 Studienteilnehmenden, gleichmäßig verteilt innerhalb der Altersgruppe 12 bis 24 Jahre zu je 25 Personen je Geschlecht. Es sollen Entwicklungsstadien von distalem Radius, distaler Ulna, distalem Femur und proximaler Tibia mithilfe eines 0,31-Tesla(T)-Niederfeld-MRT-Scanners erfasst und mittels Anwendung der Vieth-Klassifikation ausgewertet werden.
Ergebnisse
Nach Auswertung der Untersuchungen der bisher 487 untersuchten Studienteilnehmenden ist ersichtlich, dass die gewählten Sequenzen die für die Vieth-Klassifikation relevanten Charakteristika der Ossifikation der untersuchten Epiphysen erfassen. Die Untersuchungen erweisen sich überdies als einfach in der Durchführung.
Schlussfolgerung
Untersuchungen zur forensischen Altersschätzung am Lebenden unter Anwendung der Vieth-Klassifikation sind mit Niederfeld-MRT-Scannern bei einer Feldstärke von 0,31 T durchführbar. Es bleibt zu klären, ob die mit einem 0,31-T-Niederfeld-MRT-Scanner nachweisbaren Ossifikationsmerkmale am Handgelenk und am Knie einen zweifelsfreien Volljährigkeitsnachweis erlauben.

Abstract
Thorough postmortem investigations of fatalities following vaccination with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines are of great social significance. From 11.03.2021 to 09.06.2021, postmortem investigations of 18 deceased persons who recently received a vaccination against COVID-19 were performed. Vaxzevria was vaccinated in nine, Comirnaty in five, Spikevax in three, and Janssen in one person. In all cases, full autopsies, histopathological examinations, and virological analyses for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were carried out. Depending on the case, additional laboratory tests (anaphylaxis diagnostics, VITT [vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia] diagnostics, glucose metabolism diagnostics) and neuropathological examinations were conducted. In 13 deceased, the cause of death was attributed to preexisting diseases while postmortem investigations did not indicate a causal relationship to the vaccination. In one case after vaccination with Comirnaty, myocarditis was found to be the cause of death. A causal relationship to vaccination was considered possible, but could not be proven beyond doubt. VITT was found in three deceased persons following vaccination with Vaxzevria and one deceased following vaccination with Janssen. Of those four cases with VITT, only one was diagnosed before death. The synopsis of the anamnestic data, the autopsy results, laboratory diagnostic examinations, and histopathological and neuropathological examinations revealed that VITT was the very likely cause of death in only two of the four cases. In the other two cases, no neuropathological correlate of VITT explaining death was found, while possible causes of death emerged that were not necessarily attributable to VITT. The results of our study demonstrate the necessity of postmortem investigations on all fatalities following vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines. In order to identify a possible causal relationship between vaccination and death, in most cases an autopsy and histopathological examinations have to be combined with additional investigations, such as laboratory tests and neuropathological examinations.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungDie forensische Altersdiagnostik kann ein entscheidendes Instrument zur Durchführung rechtstaatlicher Verfahren sein. Bei der Altersdiagnostik wird die Entwicklung von Skelett- und Zahnmerkmalen einer zu begutachtenden Person mit Daten von Referenzpopulationen verglichen. Als möglicher Einflussfaktor auf die Altersdiagnose ist der sozioökonomische Status (SES) der zu begutachtenden Person zu berücksichtigen. Allerdings ist die Studienlage zu diesem Einflussfaktor bislang spärlich. Prospektiv wurde der Zusammenhang zwischen der Skelett- bzw. Zahnentwicklung und dem SES innerhalb einer deutschen Studienpopulation aus freiwilligen Teilnehmern ermittelt. Dazu wurde die Entwicklung der medialen Epiphyse des Schlüsselbeins, der distalen Epiphyse des Radius, der distalen Epiphyse des Femurs, der proximalen Epiphyse der Tibia und des linken unteren dritten Molaren bei 294 Frauen und 287 Männern im Alter von 12 bis 24 Jahren mittels 3‑Tesla-Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) untersucht. Zusätzlich wurde der SES der Teilnehmer erfasst. Hierzu wurde das Bildungsniveau der Eltern erfragt. Der Einfluss des SES auf die Einzelmerkmale sowie die Gesamtheit der untersuchten Skelettmerkmale wurde mittels linearer Regression ermittelt. Für alle untersuchten Merkmale und Kombinationen konnte keine Evidenz für einen Zusammenhang festgestellt werden. Es wurde geschlussfolgert, dass sich die Lebensumstände der Studienteilnehmer offenbar nicht ausreichend stark unterschieden, um einen Einfluss des SES auf das Skelettalter darzustellen.

Abstract
Dental methods are an important element of forensic age assessment of living persons. After the development of all the teeth, including third molars, is completed, degenerative characteristics can be used to assess age. The radiologically detectable reduction of the dental pulp cavity has been described as such a feature. We investigated the suitability of ultrahigh field 9.4 T ultrashort time echo (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of pulp cavity volume in relation to the total tooth volume in 4 extracted human teeth. The volume calculations were performed after semi-automatic segmentation by software AMIRA using the different intensities of the structures in the MRI dataset. The automatically selected intensity range was adjusted manually to the structures. The visual distinction of pulp and tooth structure was possible in all cases with in-plane resolution < 70 μm. Ratios of tooth/pulp volume were calculated, which could be suitable for age estimation procedures. Intensity shifts within the pulp were not always correctly assigned by the software in the course of segmentation. 9.4 T UTE-MRI technology is a forward-looking, radiation-free procedure that allows the volume of the dental pulp to be determined at high spatial resolution and is thus potentially a valuable instrument for the age assessment of living persons.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungEs wird über einen Fall häuslicher Gewalt berichtet, bei dem die 86-jährige Ehefrau ihren gleichaltrigen, an Demenz leidenden Ehemann durch vielfache stumpfe Gewalteinwirkungen tötete. Als Tatwerkzeug kam ein Schrubber zum Einsatz. Richtungweisend für die Identifizierung des Schrubbers als Tatwaffe waren die zahlreichen gruppiert angeordneten, rundlichen, kleinfleckigen Hautabschürfungen sowie die gruppiert angeordneten, kleinfleckigen Hautunterblutungen, die sich den Borstenbüscheln eines Schrubbers zuordnen ließen. Todesursächlich war ein Verbluten in die Weichteile. Eine Fettembolie wurde histologisch ausgeschlossen. In einem Sicherungsverfahren wurde für die Ehefrau aufgrund einer Alzheimer-Demenz mit dadurch bedingter mangelnder Steuerungsfähigkeit die Unterbringung in einem psychiatrischen Krankenhaus angeordnet.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to test whether a new stage classification based on radiographic visibility of the periodontal ligament in lower third molars in a Chinese population can be used for the 18- and 21-year thresholds. A total of 1300 orthopantomograms, including equal numbers of northern Chinese males and females evenly distributed between the ages of 15 and 40 years, were analyzed. The stages were defined according to the visibility of periodontal ligament for the outer parts of lower third molar roots because the visibility status of the periodontal ligament between the roots of lower third molars is none valuable in many Chinese individuals. Stage 0 was first achieved at the age of 17.05 years in males and 17.46 years in females. The earliest appearance of stage 1 was 17.47 years in males and 17.86 years in females. Stage 2 was first observed in males at the age of 21.43 years and in females at the age of 21.96 years. The onset of stage 3 was first observed at the age of 25.83 years in males and 23.14 years in females. Compared with the stage classification of Olze et al., which also considers the mesial parts of the roots, the number of assessable cases could be significantly increased. Therefore, our novel approach is effective for age estimation in the Chinese population.

Abstract
The main criterion of dental age assessment in living adolescents and young adults is the evaluation of third molars' mineralization. Concerning forensic age assessment after the completion of third molars' mineralization, apposition of secondary dentine and narrowing of the periodontal membrane as seen as decreasing radiolucent areas in the radiographs for mandibular third molars have already been described as regressive features. The present study examines the combination of both these features for the purpose of age assessment in regression analyses after rescaling the data to make it on the interval scale. To this end, a total of 1245 orthopantomograms was evaluated, taken from 606 females and 639 males in the age group of 15-40 years. The apposition of secondary dentine and narrowing of the periodontal membrane as seen as decreasing radiolucent areas in the radiographs were determined for the lower third molars. The correlation of the features with the chronological age was assessed by means of rescaled regression analyses. Furthermore, regression formulas for age assessment were established. The values of the standard error of estimate ranged between 3.55 and 4.52 years. In general, the rescaled regression of the examined features appears to be suited for forensic age assessment. A limitation of the present study is the comparatively low number of evaluable teeth in the examined age group. Due to an incomplete development or a lack of the mandibular third molars, only a mere half of the respective teeth could be included in the statistical analysis.

Abstract
According to the acknowledged recommendations of the multidisciplinary "Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics," the indicator "medial clavicular ossification" carries the potential of delivering decisive evidence to proof age majority "beyond reasonable doubt" regarding age-disputed individuals within legal procedures. Yet, sternoclavicular thin-slice computed tomography, representing its preferred imaging modality, not rarely exhibits peculiar morphologies of the site, sometimes difficult to understand from the usually obtained, axial sections together with coronal reformations. Because of that, we utilized 3D-rendering of acquired CT data in 224 cases with the purpose to gain additional visualization of certain questionable appearances. Concerning reliable classification of medial clavicular ossification in line with the typologies of Schmeling et al. and Kellinghaus et al., it is concluded that such means of illustration contribute to recognition of polygonal or irregular, epiphyseal formations including the not-assessable shape variant "multiple, medial, secondary ossification centres" and of calcification of the articular capsule.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the possibility of determining majority via a morphology-based examination of the epiphyseal-diaphyseal fusion by 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a prospective cross-sectional study developing and applying a new stage classification was conducted. MATERIALS AND METHODS 344 male and 350 female volunteers of German nationality between the ages of 12-24 years were scanned between May 2013 and June 2015. A 3.0 T MRI scanner was used, acquiring a T1-weighted (T1-w) turbo spin-echo sequence (TSE) and a T2-weighted (T2-w) TSE sequence with fat suppression by spectral pre-saturation with inversion recovery (SPIR). The gathered information was sifted and a five-stage classification was formulated as a hypothesis. The images were then assessed using this classification. The relevant statistics were defined, the intra- and interobserver agreements were determined, and the differences between the sexes were analysed. RESULTS The application of the new classification made it possible to correctly assess majority in both sexes by the examination of the epiphyses of the knee joint. The intra- and interobserver agreement levels were very good (κ > 0.80). The Mann-Whitney-U Test implied significant sex-related differences for most stages. CONCLUSION Applying the presented MRI classification, it is possible to determine the completion of the 18th year of life in either sex by 3.0 T MRI of the knee joint. KEY POINTS • Based on prospective referential data a new MRI classification was formulated. • The setting allows assessment of the age of an individual's skeletal development. • The classification scheme allows the reliable determination of majority in both sexes. • The staging shows a high reproducibility for instructed and trained professional personnel. • The proposed classification is likely to be adaptable to other long bone epiphyses.

Abstract
In the past, numerous studies have documented the possibility of intraindividual differing appearances of the paired age-marker "medial clavicular ossification" in borderline adults. However, the extent of the divergences is rarely mentioned. Against that the article describes this phenomenon from a large sample of 2595 male persons by means of thin-slice CT imaging of the sternoclavicular regions. For determining the ossification stage of the medial clavicles, the two accepted classifications by Schmeling et al. (five main stages) and Kellinghaus et al. (six substages) were applied and buildings deviating from that labelled as atypical "norm variants". The longstanding observation could be confirmed that intraindividual stage discrepancies of this age indicator are generally moderate and do not exceed one main stage or two substages of the respective classifications. It is concluded that stage determination should be scrutinized, if a dissimilarity seems to show larger differences.

Abstract
The purpose of the present research is to study the radiographic visibility of the periodontal ligament in third molars from a northern Chinese population to determine if this methodology could be used for the 18-year threshold. A total of 1300 conventional orthopantomograms from 650 males and 650 females of northern Chinese subjects aged between 15 and 40 years were analyzed. The radiographic visibility of the periodontal membrane of fully mineralized third molars was assessed using the stages described by Olze et al. (2010). Stage 0 first appeared at the age of 17.05 years in males and at the age of 18.76 years in females. Stage 1 was first detected at 18.52 years in males and 19.59 years in females. Stage 2 was first achieved by males at the age of 22.33 years and by females at the age of 21.37 years. The earliest appearance of stage 3 was 26.85 years in males and 24.92 years in females. If stage 1 is determined, it is possible to prove that an individual has already attained the age of 18 years. Stages 2 and 3 can be used to determine that a person is over 21 years of age. However, it should also be noted that in 271 cases of tooth 38 and 255 cases of tooth 48, the visibility stage could not be reliably assessed because of fused roots or narrowed furcations. Therefore, this method seems to be of limited value for age estimation in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Determining the ossification stage of the medial clavicular epiphysis by computed tomography represents the currently recommended methodology for the question of whether a living individual has completed the 18th or 21st year of life. In the present study, thin-slice CT scans of 1078 sternoclavicular joints were reconstructed in axial and coronal image series and evaluated according to the two classification systems established for age diagnostics using the clavicle. Both image series (axial and coronal) were analyzed separately. When comparing the results of axial and coronal view, a different ossification stage was found in 35.6% of the clavicles. The results suggest an influence of the imaging plane on the process of stage determination. In order to further approximate the three-dimensional and asymmetrical structure of the epiphyseal ossification center, the usage of at least two different reformation types may be recommended. In practice, only those reference studies should be applied which exactly employed the same number and orientations of the reformation types that are going to be used in the respective routine case.

Abstract
In forensic age estimations of living individuals, computed tomography of the clavicle is widely used for determining the age of majority. To this end, the degree of ossification of the medial clavicular epiphysis can be determined by means of two classification systems complementing each other: a 5-stage system and an additional 6-stage system that further sub-classifies the stages 2 and 3. In recent years, practical experience and new data revealed that difficulties and even wrong stage determinations may occur especially when following the short descriptions of the fundamental 5-stage system only. Based on current literature, this article provides a systematic procedure for identifying the five main ossification stages by listing important preconditions and presenting an algorithm that is comprised of four specific questions. Each question is accompanied by comprehensive and detailed descriptions which specify the criteria used for differentiation. The information is subdivided into "single-slice view" and "multi-slice view." In addition, illustrative case examples and schematic drawings facilitate application of the procedure in forensic practice. The pitfalls associated with the criteria of stage determination will be discussed in detail. Eventually, two general rules will be inferred to assign correct ossification stages of the medial clavicular epiphysis by means of computed tomography.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Forensic age estimation is requested by courts and other government authorities so that immigrants whose real age is unknown should not suffer unfair disadvantages because of their supposed age, and so that all legal procedures to which an individual's age is relevant can be properly followed. 157 age estimations were requested in Berlin in 2014, more than twice as many as in 2004. METHODS This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search in the PubMed and MEDPILOT databases, supplemented by relevant recommendations and by the findings of the authors' own research. RESULTS The essential components of age estimation are the history, physical examination, X-rays of the hands, panorama films of the jaws, and, if indicated, a thin-slice CT of the medial clavicular epiphyses, provided that there is a legal basis for X-ray examinations without a medical indication. Multiple methods are always used in combination, for optimal accuracy. Depending on the legal issues at hand, the examiner may be asked to estimate the individual's minimum age and/or his or her most probable age. The minimum-age concept can be used in determinations whether an individual has reached the age of legal majority. It is designed to ensure that practically all persons classified as adults have, in fact, attained legal majority, even though some other persons will be incorrectly classified as minors. CONCLUSION Forensic age estimation lets courts and other government authorities determine the official age of persons whose actual age is unknown-in most cases, unaccompanied refugees who may be minors. The goal is to carry out age-dependent legal procedures appropriately in accordance with the rule of law. The minimum-age concept is designed to prevent the erroneous classification of minors as legal adults.

Abstract
The dramatic rise in the number of refugees entering Germany means that age estimation for juveniles and young adults whose age is unclear but relevant to legal and official procedures has become more important than ever. Until now, whether and to what extent the combination of methods recommended by the Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics has resulted in a reduction of the range of scatter of the summarized age diagnosis has been unclear. Hand skeletal age, third molar mineralization stage and ossification stage of the medial clavicular epiphyses were determined for 307 individuals aged between 10 and 29 at time of death on whom autopsies were performed at the Institutes of Legal Medicine in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg between 2001 and 2011. To measure the range of scatter, linear regression analysis was used to calculate the standard error of estimate for each of the above methods individually and in combination. It was found that combining the above methods led to a reduction in the range of scatter. Due to various limitations of the study, the statistical parameters determined cannot, however, be used for age estimation practice.

Abstract
In order to increase the validity of age estimation in adolescents and young adults when there is no legitimation for X-ray examinations, it seems desirable to be able to assess the mineralization of third molars using X-ray-free imaging procedures. In the present study, the mineralization stages of lower third molars were determined prospectively in 269 male and 248 female individuals aged 12 to 24 years using 3.0 T MRI. The classification system of Demirjian et al. was used to determine the stages. This study presents the minima and maxima, means and standard deviations, median values, and lower and upper quartiles separately for both sexes, for the mineralization stages B-H. Statistically significant sex differences were observed for the mineralization stages C, E, F, and G, and a faster developmental rate was observed for males. It was concluded that magnetic resonance imaging is an X-ray-free alternative to orthopantomography when assessing mineralization of third molars.

Abstract
Age assessment of living individuals represents a valuable tool in both forensic medicine and sports medicine. In soccer, age-related tournaments play an important role in guaranteeing equal chances to the competitors. However, age estimations in this field should not rely on imaging methods that include exposure to radiation. Therefore, the present study investigates the possibilities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the iliac crest apophysis for the purpose of evaluating skeletal maturation in under-20 (U-20) soccer players. To this end, gradient echo 3D sequences of the whole pelvis of 152 male tournament soccer players between 18 and 22 years of age were prospectively evaluated. A four stage classification system was applied for the assessment of the apophyseal ossification. Reliable stage determination was possible in all cases. Further sub-classification did not appear feasible due to the limitations of MRI. Analysis of the statistical parameters showed that age medians increased steadily from stage to stage. However, they did not allow for further differentiation of skeletal maturity in the cohort studied. Thus, MRI of the iliac crest appears to be generally suitable in age diagnostics of living individuals, but further investigations, especially in a cohort of individuals aged between 10 and 20 years, are needed in order to establish this method as novel criterion in sports or forensic medicine.

Abstract
As superimposition effects often impede the evaluation of the ossification status of the medial clavicular epiphysis in standard posterior-anterior (PA) radiographs, additional oblique images (right anterior oblique, RAO, and left anterior oblique, LAO) are currently recommended to allow for reliable stage assessments. The present study examines the influence of the radiographic projection type on stage determination. To this end, 836 sternoclavicular joints were prospectively obtained during forensic autopsies of bodies aged between 15 and 30 years. Subsequently, three different radiographs (PA, RAO, and LAO) were taken from each specimen and separately evaluated as to the developmental stage of the medial clavicular epiphysis. A forensically established five-stage classification system was used. In 25 % of the cases, the medial clavicular epiphysis depicted in an oblique projection showed a different ossification stage than in the PA projection. In at least 10 % of the cases, a higher ossification stage was observed which would have significant disadvantages in criminal proceedings (ethically unacceptable error). In conclusion, the usage of the current radiographic reference data, which rely upon chest radiographs taken as PA projections, appears to be inadmissible for oblique projections. Projection radiography of the clavicle can therefore no longer be recommended for forensic age estimation practice. As to the question of whether an individual has achieved the age of 18 or 21, computed tomography of the clavicle must be regarded as the exclusive method of choice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To guarantee equal chances for participants in U-20 football tournaments, it seems desirable to verify the ages given by players with questionable dates of birth. OBJECTIVE To study the potential use of 3.0 tesla MRI of the clavicle in estimating the ages of U-20 football players. METHODS The ossification stage of the medial clavicular epiphyses was evaluated prospectively in 152 male footballers in the age group from 18 to 22 years using 3.0 tesla MRI. RESULTS Average age increased with any higher degree of fusion. The only footballer with full ossification of the medial clavicular epiphyseal plate was 21.2 years old. CONCLUSIONS The presence of a fully ossified clavicular epiphyseal plate appears to provide evidence of completion of the 20th year of life. The results of the pilot study need to be verified in a larger number of cases.

Abstract
The establishment of radiation-free examination procedures in the field of forensic age diagnostics in living persons is to be considered of special scientific interest so as to minimize necessary exposure to X-rays while facilitating additional assessment of skeletal development in all cases. To this end, the advantages offered by magnetic resonance imaging in securing a practical application which is as unrestricted and complication-free as possible should be among the methods exploited in investigating such indicators of skeletal maturity. Within the framework of a retrospective study, we investigated the ossification status of the proximal tibial epiphysis on the MRI scans of 124 females and 166 males aged between 10 and 30 years. All the images had been generated on a 3.0 T scanner using a T1-weighted turbo spin-echo sequence. When evaluating the ossification stage, a combination of modified classifications proposed by Schmeling et al. and by Kellinghaus et al. was used. The statistical evaluation included calculation of a variety of measures to describe specific ossification stages as well as kappa coefficients to assess intra- and inter-observer agreement on diagnoses of individual stages. In forensic contexts, completion of the 14th year of life can be adequately evidenced in females with an ossification stage IV according to Schmeling et al. and in males with an ossification stage III c according to Kellinghaus et al. or an ossification stage IV according to Schmeling et al. In forensic contexts, the presence of an ossification stage IV according to Schmeling et al. can prove that the age of 16 years has been exceeded only in the male sex, whereby for age estimation purposes the diagnosis should be in line with other skeletal maturity indicators. The results available displayed a high degree of intra- and inter-observer agreement. Examination of the ossification status of the proximal tibial epiphysis using magnetic resonance imaging represents an effective additional tool for use in radiation-free forensic age diagnostics in living persons.
