Role of Health Care Providers in Encouraging Formula Feeding in Mosul City

Unacceptable advertisements and deceptive promotion of formula feeding undermine breastfeeding and threaten infant and maternal health worldwide. The purpose of this study was to estimate the role of healthcare providers and other sources in promoting the use of formula feeding among attendants at healthcare facilities in Mosul, Iraq. This one-year cross-sectional study was conducted at three healthcare facilities in Mosul, Iraq. Mothers of formula-fed infants under the age of one year were surveyed with a prepared questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Of the 400 women who participated, 73% stated that healthcare professionals encouraged the use of formula feeding without a convenient reason, of which more than 80% were pediatricians and nursery nurses. Only 27% percent of the women chose to formula-feed their infants based on other factors. An extensive analysis of this attitude is warranted.

The value of the red cell distribution width index versus other parameters in the differentiation between iron deficiency anemia and beta thalassemia trait among children in Mosul, Iraq

BACKGROUND

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children may be confounded with the beta-thalassemia trait (BTT). This study aimed to reevaluate the role of the red blood cell distribution width index (RDWI) in distinguishing BTT from IDA.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2018 to February 2019 in two pediatric teaching hospitals in Mosul, Iraq. Two sets of patients with hypochromic microcytic anemia in the age range 6 months-12 years were included. The receiver-operating characteristics curve was used to identify the test best distinguishing BTT from IDA.

RESULTS

In the first patient set, 54 (51.92%) had IDA and 50 (48.07%) had BTT. The area under the curve (AUC) for the RDWI was larger than for other parameters at 0.963, suggesting a discriminant tool to detect cases of BTT (p-value < 0.0001) . In the second patient set, 25 (42.85%) IDA cases and 20 (57.14%) BTT cases were analyzed, and the RDWI still had the highest AUC when compared with other parameters (p-value < 0.0001). An RDWI cutoff value suggested to differentiate BTT from IDA was 200.18 and 200.35 respectively for both groups.

CONCLUSIONS

RDWI may be a useful screening parameter in differentiating BTT from IDA.

Study of low vitamin D among children with anorexia in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan region, Iraq during summer months

Objectives:

To determine the impact of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency on the development of anorexia in children with mild malnutrition without an obvious cause.

Methods:

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Faruk Medical City, Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, Iraq, between May and September 2018. It included 39 mildly malnourished children with a poor appetite for over 3 months and 156 children who were healthy except for minor illnesses as the control group. All the children were regular attendees at the outpatient clinic and were tested for serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D. We used binary logistic regression statistical analysis to measure the significance of the association between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and anorexia with mild malnutrition in young children.

Results:

Of the 39 children in the anorexia group, 20 had vitamin D deficiency, and the remaining 6 had vitamin D insufficiency. On the other hand, 16 of the remaining children with normal appetites, showed a vitamin D deficiency, and 38 of them displayed insufficiency. Statistically significant association between vitamin D deficiency and anorexia with malnutrition was noted (odd ratio: 9.808; 95% confidence interval: 4.089 - 23.523; p=0.0001), while it was insignificant with vitamin D insufficiency.

Conclusion:

This study displayed a noteworthy relationship between vitamin D deficiency and anorexia with mild malnutrition in young children.
