Abstract
AbstractAspergillus strains were isolated from Hungarian mills in order to get information on the appearance of sterigmatocystin (ST) producing moulds, whose presence has never been demonstrated in Hungary. Fungal isolates were classified into nine morphotypes, sections Nigri, Nidulantes, Versicolores (two morphotypes), Circumdati, Flavi (two morphotypes), Clavati and Terrei by classical mycological assays. ST producing strains could be classified into section Versicolores. ST production of the isolates was assessed by liquid and solid phase growth experiments and compared to ST producing reference strains: Aspergillus pepii SzMC 22332, Aspergillus versicolor SzMC 22333, Aspergillus griseoaurantiacus SzMC 22334 and Aspergillus nidulans RDIT9.32. Four of our isolates marked as Km11, Km14, Km26 and Km31 showed ST production in liquid medium. ST production on solid phase corn grit substrate was measured after three weeks of incubation, and Km26 isolate proved to be the most prominent with a toxin concentration of 277.1 μg g−1, surpassing all reference strains. The toxin-producing ability of Km26 isolate was also tested in a field experiment, where corn was infected. By the end of the experiment, ST level of 19.56 μg kg−1 was measured in infected corn.Molecular taxonomic identification of the Km26 strain was performed using internal transcribed spacer (ITS), calmodulin and tubulin sequence analyses. Based on these studies, strain Km26 was identified as Aspergillus creber.Here we report that an ST-producing A. creber strain has appeared in Hungary, and the Km26 strain is the first known extreme ST-producing mould in this country. As a result of climate change, aflatoxin B1 producing Aspergillus flavus strains have appeared in Hungary in the last decade. As strain Km26 is the only A. creber isolate in Hungary so far, there is no sign of mass prevalence, and due to the lower temperature optimum of the species compared to A. flavus, its appearance is probably not related to climate change.

Abstract
AbstractThe presented research aimed to confirm that the differences in the lipid peroxidation of three maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids with different genotypes and maturity are due to different nitrogen levels, which was observed based on the amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) measured in the leaves at the main phenological stages of plants. The experiments were performed in a multi-factorial long term fertilisation field trial. In the study, phosphorus and potassium were constantly provided at the optimal level for the plants. The phosphorus and potassium fertilisation were applied in autumn. However, N levels varied from 0 to 300 kg ha−1. Sampling was done at different growth stages 5 times during the growing season (4 leaves, 6 leaves, 8 leaves, 14 leaves, silking). The 300 kg ha−1 N (dose 3) resulted in a significant increase in lipid peroxidation (MDA level), but not a statistically significant difference between the control (dose 1) and the 120 kg ha−1 (dose 2) N doses. The H1 hybrid had the lowest level of lipid peroxidation at the first sampling date. High volume nitrogen fertilisation (dose 3: 300 kg ha−1) increased lipid peroxidation in the hybrids. Averaging the values obtained for the same hybrid at the different sampling times, the medium (dose 2) 120 kg ha−1 N treatment had no significant effect on the lipid peroxidation of the hybrids compared to the values of the control plants. Based on the lipid peroxidation response of the hybrids to N treatment, the exact N dose inflection point can be determined to make the fertiliser utilisation of plants more efficient. Based on our results, we found that inadequate, low (120 kg ha−1) or high (300 kg ha−1) nitrogen fertilisation could affect the MDA levels of plants, thereby affecting the functioning of the lipid peroxidation mechanism.

Abstract
Brain metastasis is a frequent complication of the progression of malignant melanoma. In a previous study aquaporin 1 (AQP1) protein expression was found to be associated with increased mortality and decreased progression free survival in cutaneous melanoma. To explore further the potential of this marker we studied the AQP1 protein expression in 67 metastatic melanoma patients using immunohistochemistry. Primary tumor samples were acquired from patients with brain (BR) (n = 44) and extra-cranial (EC) (n = 23) metastases, while brain metastatic samples were collected during neurosurgical resection (n = 5). Patients with brain metastases had shorter overall survival (p = 0.02) and significantly higher AQP1 expression in the primary tumors (median H-score = 250 vs. 140, p = 0.044) as compared to patients of the EC metastasis group. AQP1 expression was found to be significantly lower in the brain metastases compared to the corresponding primary tumors (median H-score = 35 vs. 300 p = 0.01). However, in brain metastases AQP1 expression was heterogenous, AQP1 protein was more abundant in the melanoma cells far away from the capillaries as compared to tumor cells adjacent to vessels indicating a hypoxia-driven expression of AQP1. We suggest that AQP1 expression could well be a prognostic marker of brain metastatic potential of human cutaneous melanoma.

Abstract
The acceptance of brain death and the legitimation of organ transplantation is very much dependent on the general knowledge of the society. In Hungary, the legislation of brain death is based on presumed consent. There is no structural education about the topic so far. AIM The role of the Gerundium program is to educate high school students about the importance of transplantation and the meaning of brain death. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Gerundium contemporary educational program in a pilot study. METHOD The education was held by medical students who successfully completed a preparatory elective course consisting of relevant information in the topic. Medical students used simple language during the 45-minute presentations. Two tests with simple but representative questions created by experts were completed by high school students: one directly before contemporary education and another 5 to 6 weeks after the lecture. RESULTS A total of 147 tests were completed: 78 before and 69 after the presentation in the city of Debrecen and 294 before the lecture in the city of Győr. In Debrecen, the overall correct answers increased by 6.05% (P < .05; before vs after). The results show that the knowledge transfer is highly effective in this manner and the students know significantly more weeks after the lectures. CONCLUSION There is much to do to broadly inform society about transplantation and brain death, but we will continue to increase the number of students and measure the dynamic change of the students' knowledge.

Abstract
Since resistance is the most important agent in regulating deoxynivalenol (DON), breeding for higher resistance is the key to improve food safety. Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK) show a closer correlation with DON than visual symptoms. This implies a difference in genetic regulation. For this reason, the mapping should be extended not only for the visual symptoms, but also for FDK and DON. Quantitative trait loci influencing only Fusarium head blight (FHB) symptoms, may not be relevant for FDK and DON. Type I and II were pooled to overall resistance at spray inoculation. From 2010 to 2016 three selection platforms were compared by checking running variety breeding programs. The use of exotic sources in breeding significantly increased the number of more resistant genotypes in each selection phase from F3-F8 generations compared to the control program where crosses were not planned for FHB resistance and screening in early generations was also not performed. However, also in this breeding platform – at a lower rate – moderately or highly resistant genotypes could be selected. Of them, eight cultivars were/are in commercial production. The Fusarium breeding program using only adapted and more resistant parents generally gave closer results to exotic breeds, and several highly resistant genotypes were produced as a result. For winter wheat the phenotypic screening at high disease pressure is the key to select highly resistant materials. At low infection pressure the high and medium resistant genotypes come in the same group. The use of more isolates increases the chance to have strong selection pressure each year. FHB resistance was combined with leaf rust, yellow rust, powdery mildew, leaf spot resistance and high protein content (15-18%). The cultivar registration and post registration screening is the key in improving food safety in commercial production.

Abstract
X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome (XHIGM) is a primary immunodeficiency disorder (PID) caused by mutation in the gene encoding the CD40 ligand (CD40L) expressed on activated T cells. Prenatal genotyping in carriers with twin pregnancies is more challenging than in women with singleton pregnancies. In addition, women with twin pregnancies may decide on selective termination for which the risk of loss of the healthy foetus may exceed 7%. We report here on a family affected by XHIGM. Diagnosis of the disease was made in a male patient as late as 33 years of age. After family screening, the sister of the proband conceived male twins in two consecutive pregnancies. In the first pregnancy, one of the male foetuses was hemizygous for the c.521A>G (Q174R) mutation in the CD40L gene. In the second pregnancy, ultrasound scan showed one foetus to have exencephaly and karyotyping revealed this foetus to have trisomy 18. Several options were discussed, but the parents decided on selective termination in both pregnancies. The interventions were successful in both cases, and the mother now has two healthy sons. This report demonstrates the way in which advanced technologies in molecular medicine and obstetric interventions may assist families with decisions about possible selective termination in case of life-threatening molecular or chromosomal disorders. Diagnosis of CD40L deficiency at the age of 33 years in the proband was striking and indicated that PIDs are still neglected as disease entities in the evaluation of patients with recurrent severe infectious diseases.

Abstract
A range of continental-scale soil datasets exists in Europe with different spatial representation and based on different principles. We developed comprehensive pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for applications principally on spatial datasets with continental coverage. The PTF development included the prediction of soil water retention at various matric potentials and prediction of parameters to characterize soil moisture retention and the hydraulic conductivity curve (MRC and HCC) of European soils. We developed PTFs with a hierarchical approach, determined by the input requirements. The PTFs were derived by using three statistical methods: (i) linear regression where there were quantitative input variables, (ii) a regression tree for qualitative, quantitative and mixed types of information and (iii) mean statistics of developer-defined soil groups (class PTF) when only qualitative input parameters were available. Data of the recently established European Hydropedological Data Inventory (EU-HYDI), which holds the most comprehensive geographical and thematic coverage of hydro-pedological data in Europe, were used to train and test the PTFs. The applied modelling techniques and the EU-HYDI allowed the development of hydraulic PTFs that are more reliable and applicable for a greater variety of input parameters than those previously available for Europe. Therefore the new set of PTFs offers tailored advanced tools for a wide range of applications in the continent.

Abstract
We generalize the reaction-diffusion model A+B→0 in order to study the impact of an excess of A (or B) at the reaction front. We provide an exact solution of the model, which shows that the linear response breaks down: the average displacement of the reaction front grows as the square root of the imbalance. We argue that this model provides a highly simplified but generic framework to understand the square-root impact of large orders in financial markets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Filaggrin (FLG) deficiency is a well-known predisposing factor for the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Decreased FLG expression can be the result of haploinsufficiency or severe inflammation, which can cause acquired FLG alterations. FLG mutations are related to several clinical and laboratory parameters of AD; however, some recent data seem to contradict these associations. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to determine which clinical and biochemical parameters are connected to FLG haploinsufficiency and which ones are also associated with acquired FLG alterations due to severe skin symptoms in patients with AD. METHODS We introduced a novel classification of patients with AD, based on FLG mutations and SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis). Based on these parameters, we created three groups of patients with AD: mild-to-moderate wild-type (A), severe wild-type (B) and severe mutant (C). In all groups, we assessed laboratory and clinical parameters and performed immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS Groups B and C contained patients with equally severe symptoms based on the SCORAD. The two severe groups did not differ significantly with respect to barrier-specific parameters, whereas group A had significantly better results for the barrier function measurements. However, significant differences were detected between groups B and C with respect to the allergic sensitization-specific parameters. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that skin barrier function correlates with the severity of skin inflammation and can be equally impaired in patients with FLG mutant- and wild-type AD with severe symptoms. Nevertheless, our results also suggest that patients with FLG mutant-type AD may have a higher risk of allergic sensitization compared with patients with the wild-type.

Abstract
Frontal areas are thought to be the coordinators of working memory processes by controlling other brain areas reflected by oscillatory activities like frontal-midline theta (4-7 Hz). With aging substantial changes can be observed in the frontal brain areas, presumably leading to age-associated changes in cortical correlates of cognitive functioning. The present study aimed to test whether altered frontal-midline theta dynamics during working memory maintenance may underlie the capacity deficits observed in older adults. 33-channel EEG was recorded in young (18-26 years, N=20) and old (60-71 years, N=16) adults during the retention period of a visual delayed match-to-sample task, in which they had to maintain arrays of 3 or 5 colored squares. An additional visual odd-ball task was used to be able to measure the electrophysiological indices of sustained attentional processes. Old participants showed reduced frontal theta activity during both tasks compared to the young group. In the young memory maintenance-related frontal-midline theta activity was shown to be sensitive both to the increased memory demands and to efficient subsequent memory performance, whereas the old adults showed no such task-related difference in the frontal theta activity. The decrease of frontal-midline theta activity in the old group indicates that cerebral aging may alter the cortical circuitries of theta dynamics, thereby leading to age-associated decline of working memory maintenance function.

Abstract
Aspergillus and Penicillium species and their mycotoxins, including aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins and patulin, are frequently encountered on cereal products. The occurrence of these species and their mycotoxins on maize was investigated in Hungary after harvest in two consecutive years. Surface-sterilized cereal seeds were placed on selective media, and the isolated fungal strains were identified using morphological methods. In 2010 and 2011, 81.94% and 14.33%, respectively, of the samples were found to be contaminated with potentially toxigenic isolates. The species identification of selected isolates was carried out using sequence-based methods. Several Aspergillus flavus isolates were identified, which are potential aflatoxin producers. Other mycotoxinproducing species were also isolated, including black Aspergilli, which potentially produce ochratoxins and fumonisins, and A. clavatus, which produces patulin. In 2010 a large number of Penicillium species occurred in the samples, producing a wide range of mycotoxins. The mycotoxin content of the samples was analysed using the ELISA and HPLC techniques. Aflatoxins were not detected in any of the samples, while ochratoxins and fumonisins were successfully identified in some of the maize seeds.

Abstract
Freezing tolerance is a quantitative trait, determined by many genes and also influenced by environmental factors. Thus, the development of reliable testing methods is a prerequisite both for the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and for the identification of the genes behind the QTLs. Transformation methods proved to be effective in the direct verification of isolated genes involved in low temperature stress responses. In order to develop freezing tolerance, winter cereals must be adapted through a cold hardening period, which not only influences cold adaptation but also initiates the vernalization process necessary for flowering. Recent and ongoing studies are endeavouring to uncover the relationship between freezing tolerance and vernalization response at the genetic and molecular levels. This review aims to explain cereal freezing tolerance on the basis of recent discoveries in the areas outlined above.

Abstract
Four new species, Aspergillus eucalypticola, A. neoniger, A. fijiensis and A. indologenus are described and illustrated. Aspergillus eucalypticola was isolated from Eucalyptus leaf from Australia, and is related to A. tubingensis and A. costaricaensis, but could clearly be distinguished from them based on either β-tubulin or calmodulin sequence data. Aspergillus eucalypticola produced pyranonigrin A, funalenone, aurasperone B and other naphtho-γ-pyrones. Aspergillus neoniger is also a biseriate species isolated from desert sand in Namibia, and mangrove water in Venezuela, which produces aurasperone B and pyranonigrin A. Aspergillus fijiensis is a uniseriate species related to A. aculeatinus, and was isolated from soil in Fiji, and from Lactuca sativa in Indonesia. This species is able to grow at 37 °C, and produces asperparalines and okaramins. Aspergillus indologenus was isolated from soil, India. This species also belongs to the uniseriate group of black aspergilli, and was found to be related to, but clearly distinguishable from A. uvarum based on β-tubulin, calmodulin and ITS sequence data. Aspergillus indologenus produced the insecticidal compounds okaramins A, B, H, and two types of indol-alkaloids which have not been structure elucidated. Two other species, A. violaceofuscus and A. acidus, are revalidated based on molecular and extrolite data. Aspergillus violaceofuscus was found to be related to A. japonicus, and produced some of the same interesting indol-alkaloids as A. indologenus, and also produced several families of partially characterised extrolites that were also found in A. heteromorphus. Aspergillus acidus (previously known as A. foetidus var. pallidus and A. foetidus var. acidus) is also a valid species, while A. foetidus is a synonym of A. niger based on molecular and physiological data. Two other species described previously, A. coreanus and A. lacticoffeatus, were found to be colour mutants of A. acidus and A. niger, respectively. Methods which could be used to distinguish the two closely related and economically important species A. niger and A. awamori are also detailed. Although these species differ in their occurrence and several physiological means (elastase activities, abilities to utilise 2-deoxy-D-glucose as sole carbon source), our data indicate that only molecular approaches including sequence analysis of calmodulin or β-tubulin genes, AFLP analysis, UP-PCR analysis or mtDNA RFLP analysis can be used reliably to distinguish these sibling species. Aspergillus section Nigri now includes 26 taxa.

Abstract
Cold acclimation is necessary for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to achieve its genetically determined maximum freezing tolerance, and cold also fulfils the vernalisation requirement. Chromosome 5A is a major regulator of these traits. The aim of the present study was to discover whether changes in the half-cell redox potential of the glutathione/glutathione disulphide (GSH/GSSG) and ascorbate/dehydroascorbate (AA/DHA) couples induced by cold acclimation are related to freezing tolerance and vernalisation requirement in a specific genetic system including chromosome 5A substitution lines. The amounts of H₂O₂ and AA, and the AA/DHA ratio showed a rapid and transient increase in the crown of all genotypes during the first week of acclimation, followed by a gradual increase during the subsequent 2 weeks. The amount of GSH and its ratio compared to GSSG quickly decreased during the first day, while later these parameters showed a continuous slow increase. The H₂O₂, AA and GSH concentrations, AA/DHA and GSH/GSSG ratios and the half-cell reduction potential of the GSH/GSSG couple were correlated with the level of freezing tolerance after 22 days at 2 °C; hence these parameters may have an important role in the acclimation process. In contrast to H₂O₂ and the non-enzymatic antioxidants, the lipid peroxide concentration and activity of the four antioxidant enzymes exhibited a transient increase during the first week, with no significant difference between genotypes. None of the parameters studied showed any relationship with the vegetative/generative transition state monitored as apex morphology and vernalisation gene expression.

Abstract
A countrywide survey of fungal diseases of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was conducted from 2005 to 2009. Unusual leaf necrosis varying in shape from 1 × 2 mm necrotic flecks to 15 × 20 mm ovoid spots was found. Sometimes a chlorotic halo surrounding the dead area was observed. Lesions appeared on various cultivars in many commercial fields and experimental plots at a number of sampling sites. Symptomatic leaves were taken to the laboratory and incubated in a moist chamber at room temperature on the bench to induce sporulation of the pathogen. Conidiophores on the diseased tissues were single or in small groups, dark brown, and bore several hyaline-to-olive brown, almost cylindrical conidia with three to seven pseudosepta. Dimensions of conidia were 75.2 to 100.9 × 16.5 to 18.8 μm. Under a stereo microscope, single conidia were transferred aseptically from the leaves onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) with a sterile needle. Plates were kept in the dark at 20°C for 2 weeks. Cultures were gray to olive green, cottony, and did not form conidia and sexual structures. These characteristics indicated that the pathogens belonged to the genus Pyrenophora. Species identity was confirmed by PCR assays with specific primers developed for the barley pathogenic Pyrenophora spp. (3,4). Of 169 isolates, 41 were identified as P. teres Drechs. f. maculata Smed.-Pet., the spot form of net blotch pathogen (2), and two of them have been deposited at an international culture collection under accession nos. CBS 123929 and CBS 123930. The remaining isolates were either P. graminea or P. teres f. teres, the leaf stripe and net form of net blotch pathogens of barley, respectively. Pathogenicity of four P. teres f. maculata and two P. teres f. teres isolates from different regions was confirmed by Koch's postulates. Each isolate was grown on two 9-cm PDA plates at 22°C in darkness. After 10 days, aerial mycelia were scraped off, blended in 100 ml of sterile distilled water, and filtered through two layers of cheesecloth. Ten seedlings of cv. Botond were sprayed at the two-leaf stage with the mycelium suspension of each isolate and a water control until runoff. Seedlings were kept in a growth chamber at 100% relative humidity and 20°C in the dark for 24 h, then at 70% relative humidity and 24/20°C (day/night) with a 12-h photoperiod. Within 3 weeks, one to four brownish ovoid spots, typical of the spot form of net blotch symptoms, developed on the leaves inoculated with P. teres f. maculata. In contrast, the seedlings inoculated with P. teres f. teres exhibited characteristic net-like lesions, whereas the control plants sprayed with sterile water remained healthy. All strains were reisolated and identified by specific PCRs as described above. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of P. teres f. maculata in Hungary. Resistance of barley against P. teres f. maculata and P. teres f. teres is inherited independently (1). Abstract
The Hungarian Detailed Soil Hydrophysical Database, called MARTHA ver2.0 has been developed to collect information on measured soil hydraulic and physical characteristics in Hungary. Recently this is the largest detailed national hydrophysical database, containing controlled information from a total of 15,005 soil horizons. Two commonly used pedotransfer functions were tested to evaluate the accuracy of the predictions on the MARTHA data set, representative for Hungarian soils. In general, the application of both examined pedotransfer functions (Rajkai,
1988; Wösten
et al., 1999) was not very successful, because these PTFs are representative for other soil groups. The classification tree method was used to evaluate the effect of soil structure on the goodness of estimations. It was found that using the soil structure data the inaccuracies of soil water retention predictions are more explainable and the structure may serve as a grouping variable for the development of class PTFs.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) have been successfully synthesized toward many different compounds in the last decades. The mechanistic details of selective binding at binding sites are not yet well understood. For this reason the characterization of MIP binding has been mostly phenomenological and this makes the transfer of results between different laboratories or between different types of applications difficult. In this paper we analyze the relationship between different types of characterization like isotherms, binding site models, chromatographic k and alpha values, etc. as they relate to different applications like HPLC, solid phase extraction (SPE), binding assays, batch extraction and sensors. It is shown that alpha values determined by elution chromatography depend on seemingly irrelevant factors as the length and diameter of the column, respectively. The determination of distribution ratios or partition coefficients is proposed as an easily understandable and useful quantity in the characterization of novel MIPs. Data used for the characterization of a MIP should be transferable between different applications but the qualification of MIPs as better or worse will depend on the application in case.

Abstract
Several compounds (carbohydrates, proteins, hormones, etc.) were used in fish to quantify the level of stress. Our investigations focused on two parameters of the blood plasma: plasma glucose and serum/plasma fructosamine (SeFa) that has not been tested on fish as yet. Experiments were conducted on two fish species. The concentrations of these components were investigated on Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) and on Prussian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio BLOCH, 1783) from the Gödöllö-Isaszeg pond system by creating conditions different from ideal. Stress effects caused a fluctuating tendency in blood plasma glucose levels each week for both Common carp and Prussian carp, thus, there was no steady growth. However, SeFa concentrations exactly followed stress effects, moreover, it tolerated short-term negative effects (handling of fish, blood sampling) and did not cause alterations at individuals blood samplings. This experimental method can offer assistance to farmers in the daily routine (e.g. in fish transport) and in the technology of propagation.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) have recently been prepared inside the pores of silica based HPLC packing materials. Detailed physical and chromatographic characterization of such a silica-MIP composite material is presented. The chromatographic peak shape obtained with the uniformly sized spherical silica-MIP composite is mainly determined by the nonlinear adsorption isotherm. Comparison of the composite with the conventional sieved and grinded bulk MIP is therefore based on the nonlinear isotherm and not on retention factors and plate numbers.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have frequently been characterized by quantities which are easily determined from experiments but have no theoretical foundation. This makes it difficult to compare different MIP preparations or to transfer MIP based methods to different experimental conditions. Since the adsorption isotherms of MIPs are markedly nonlinear, one can build a better characterization strategy on isotherms as shown by examples in this paper.

Abstract
The present study analyzes the effect of selective deafferentation on the reperfusion injury of the skeletal muscle when nociceptive sensory fibers of the left sciatic nerve are selectively damaged by capsaicin pretreatment in a rat model following tourniquet ischemia (ISC) applied for 30 min, 1 h, and 2 h on the left hind limb. The isometric tetanic contractile force of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle was measured after 1 h, and 1, 3, or 7 days of reperfusion. Contractile force of the damaged muscle was compared to the intact contralateral muscle. In another group, ISC was used without capsaicin pre-treatment. After 30 min of ISC, there was no difference between deafferented and non-pretreated groups. Following 1 h ISC, with the exception of 1 h reperfusion, the non-pretreated group produced stronger contractions than the deafferented group. After 2 h ISC, the contractile force of the deafferented muscle was significantly stronger compared to the non-deafferented muscle force at all reperfusion times. In conclusions, it was found that the absence of peptidergic sensory fibers after long-lasting (2 h) ischemia is beneficial in reperfusion injury, whereas the absence of vasodilator peptides has unfavorable effects if tissue damage is milder (after 1 h ischemia).

Abstract
Isolates representing newly described Neosartorya species, and isolates with abnormal morphologies from Aspergillus section Fumigati were examined by phylogenetic analysis of sequences of part of their beta-tubulin gene. Phylogenetic analyses supported the earlier suggestions that heterothallism is a derived character, and that sexuality was lost several times during the evolution of Aspergillus section Fumigati. The heterothallic N. fennelliae and N. udagawae strains were found to be closely related to the homothallic Neosartorya sp. NRRL 4179 and N. aureola, respectively. Aspergillus sp. FRR 1266, which was earlier described as a variant of A. fumigatus, was found to be closely related to A. viridinutans. Another abnormal asexual isolate was found to be closely related to A. fumigatus and N. fischeri. Phylogenetic relationships among newly described Neosartorya species and other taxa were successfully established based on phylogenetic analysis of beta-tubulin sequences.

Abstract
Barley ( Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare) is an economically important diploid model for the Triticeae; and a better understanding of low-temperature tolerance mechanisms could significantly improve the yield of fall-sown cereals. We developed a new resource for genetic analysis of winter hardiness-related traits, the 'Nure' x 'Tremois' linkage map, based on a doubled-haploid population that is segregating for low-temperature tolerance and vernalization requirement. Three measures of low-temperature tolerance and one measure of vernalization requirement were used and, for all traits, QTLs were mapped on chromosome 5H. The vernalization response QTL coincides with previous reports at the Vrn-1/Fr1 region of the Triticeae. We also found coincident QTLs at this position for all measures of low-temperature tolerance. Using Composite Interval Mapping, a second proximal set, of coincident QTLs for low-temperature tolerance, and the accumulation of two different COR proteins (COR14b and TMC-Ap3) was identified. The HvCBF4 locus, or another member of the CBF loci clustered in this region, is the candidate gene underlying this QTL. There is a CRT/DRE recognition site in the promoter of cor14b with which a CBF protein could interact. These results support the hypothesis that highly conserved regulatory factors, such as members of the CBF gene family, may regulate the stress responses of a wide range of plant species.

Abstract
Two populations of single chromosome recombinant lines were used to map genes controlling flowering time on chromosome 5B of wheat, and one of the populations was also used to map a new frost resistance gene. Genetic maps were developed, mainly using microsatellite markers, and QTL analysis was applied to phenotypic data on the performance of each population collected from growth-room tests of flowering time and frost tolerance. Using a recombinant substitution-line mapping population derived from a cross between the substitution-line 'Chinese Spring' ('Cheyenne' 5B) and 'Chinese Spring' (CS), the gene Vrn-B1, affecting vernalization response, an earliness per se locus, Eps-5BL1, and a gene, Fr-B1, affecting frost resistance, were mapped. Using a 'Hobbit Sib' ('Chinese Spring' 5BL) x 'Hobbit Sib' recombinant substitution line mapping population, an earliness per se locus, Eps-5BL2 was mapped. The Vrn-B1 locus was mapped on the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome 5B, to a region syntenous with the segments of chromosomes 5A and 5D containing Vrn-A1 and Vrn-D1 loci, respectively. The two Eps-5BL loci were mapped close to the centromere with a 16-cM distance from each other, one in agreement with the position of a homoeologous locus previously mapped on chromosome 5H of barley, and suggested by the response of 'Chinese Spring' deletion lines. The Fr-B1 gene was mapped on the long arm of chromosome 5B, 40 cM from the centromeric marker. Previous comparative mapping data with rice chromosome 9 would suggest that this gene could be orthologous to the other Fr genes mapped previously by us on chromosomes 5A or 5D of wheat, although in a more proximal position. This study completes the mapping of these homoeoallelic series of vernalization requirement genes and frost resistance genes on the chromosomes of the homoeologous group 5 in wheat.

Abstract
Mycoviruses with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) genomes are frequently encountered in Aspergillus isolates. A detailed study of such dsRNA elements in black Aspergillus isolates collected worldwide was carried out, and the data were analysed. The results indicate that about 10% of black Aspergilli are infected. However, the geographic distribution of infected isolates exhibits large variations; 3-13% of the isolates collected from different continents were found to carry dsRNA elements. Hybridization experiments indicated that electrophoretic banding patterns are not reliable tools for estimating the diversity of these mycovirus genomes. Among strains representing other Aspergillus sections, dsRNA segments indicative of mycovirus infection were observed for the first time in 4 species (A. leporis, A. petrakii, A. fumigatus and A. primulinus). The latter species is able to reproduce sexually. This is the second report on the detection of naturally-occurring dsRNAs in sexually reproducing Aspergillus species. The presence of virus-like particles in these and other Aspergilli was also examined by electron microscopy. Most infected Aspergillus isolates examined were found to carry virus-like particles in the size range 36-40 nm.

Abstract
Pancreatic trauma is relatively uncommon, but it has high morbidity and mortality rates, especially when the diagnosis is delayed or inappropriate surgery is attempted. We analysed the management of 11 patients in a university teaching hospital treated with distal pancreatic transsection without (grade II--according AAST score) and with main pancreatic duct (MPD) injury (grade III) caused by blunt abdominal trauma. The average age of the 10 male and 1 female patients was 24.9 years (5-56). Five patients had isolated pancreatic trauma, other 6 patients had 2.3 associated intraabdominal and 0.8 associated extraabdominal injuries. Six patients were diagnosed and operated within the first 24 hours. Five of them had transsection of the gland with main pancreatic duct injury, distal pancreatectomy with (2) or without (1) splenectomy, distal pancreatogastrostomy (1), and (due to associated duodenal laceration) pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (1) were performed. In one case (grade II) only external drainage was necessary. All patients in this group who were operated on early survived. Only one patient needed reoperation due to haemorrhage after pancreatoduodenectomy. From the other five patients four were referred after initial treatment in a primary centre (all of them underwent some kind of external drainage), and in one patient the diagnosis of pancreatic injury was missed at the initial operation in our hospital. Three of them had undetected MPD injury, in two patients parenchymal lesions were underestimated or missed. Every patients needed subsequent resection (1), internal drainage due to fistula (2), or drainage of developed abscess (2). Three of them had severe septic and pulmonary complications; one patient with MPD injury died. Patients who require delayed surgery after an unsuccessful period of conservative treatment or a subsequent operation due to undetected MPD injury demonstrated higher pancreas-specific mortality and morbidity rate.
