Micro shear bond strength of mineral trioxide aggregate to different innovative dental restorative materials

The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the micro shear bond strength (µSBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate to four different restorative materials. Sixty mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) samples were randomly assigned into four experimental groups based on the restorative materials used: nanohybrid resin composite as a control, giomer, alkasite and ormocer. µSBS samples were prepared for each group (n = 15). These samples were then submitted to a µSBS test (crosshead speed, 0.5 mm/min). The resulting data were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Levene, and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05). The bond strength of the alkasite group was statistically significantly higher than all the tested groups (p<0.05), while there were no significant differences between the nanohybrid resin composite, giomer, or ormocer groups (p > 0.05). Within the limitations of this study, alkasite restorative material could be a promising material when placed over MTA.

Effects of different toothpastes on the color and whiteness of stained anterior composite resin

PURPOSE

To evaluate changes in the color of an anterior nanohybrid composite resin and differences in its whitening index after 30 days of brushing with six brands of whitening toothpaste in vitro to simulate the situation in individuals with high coffee consumption.

METHODS

Eighty-four disk-shaped resin specimens were prepared (shade A2). For initial staining, the samples were immersed in coffee solution for 14 days and then divided into eight groups for treatment with various toothpastes. Color was assessed at the baseline, after initial staining, and on days 7, 14, and 30 of the staining-and-brushing cycle. Color stability was evaluated based on the CIEDE2000 color difference (ΔE00), and differences in whiteness were determined using the whitening index for dentistry (WID).

RESULTS

The highest ΔE00 and ΔWID values were obtained with Colgate Herbal, followed by Opalescence Whitening and Crest Baking Soda and Peroxide, whereas the lowest values were obtained with distilled water, followed by Yotuel Pharma B5, on day 30 of the staining-and-brushing cycle.

CONCLUSION

In terms of improving the color and whiteness of coffee-stained anterior nanohybrid composite resin, Colgate Herbal, Opalescence Whitening, and Crest Baking Soda and Peroxide yielded promising results after 30 days of continuous use.

Effect of Aging on Surface Roughness and Color Stability of a Novel Alkasite in Comparison with Current Direct Restorative Materials

AIM

To compare the surface roughness and color stability of a novel alkasite with current direct restorative materials with and without an aging step.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Twenty-six specimens of each of the following materials were prepared: alkasite, ormocer, giomer, high-viscosity glass ionomer, glass carbomer, and nanohybrid composite (control). Half of the specimens in each group were stained, the other half of the specimens were aged and then stained. Color and surface roughness evaluations were conducted at baseline, after aging and after staining, using a dental spectrophotometer, and a three-dimentional (3D) noncontact optical profilometer, respectively. Statistical analyses were completed using one-way analysis of variance, post hoc Tukey test, and paired samples t-test.

RESULTS

At baseline and after aging, the surface of alkasite was found to be rougher than nanohybrid composite and ormocer surfaces (p<0.05). However, in terms of roughness increase caused by aging, ormocer, nanohybrid composite, and alkasite were affected in a similar way (p>0.05). In terms of color stability, alkasite was more colored than nanohybrid composite and ormocer (p<0.05), and performed similar to giomer (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The surface roughness and color stability characteristics of alkasite material was between composite resins and glass ionomer-based materials after aging.

Surface degradation evaluation of different self-adhesive restorative materials after prolonged energy drinks exposure

AIM

To evaluate the effects of energy drinks and soft beverages on the surface degradation of different self-adhesive materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A 156 disc shaped specimens of each of the following materials were prepared: Alkasite (Cention N, CN), High viscozity glass ionomer (Equia Forte, EF), Glass Carbomer (GCP Fill, GC) (n = 52). After specimen preparations, baseline surface roughness measurements were done using a 3D non-contact optical profilometer. Then, specimens were subdivided into 4 subgroups (n = 13) and stored in petri dish containing Red Bull; Burn; Coca-Cola and Distilled water. The surface roughness of the specimens were measured after 1-day, 1-week, and 1-month of immersion in beverages.

RESULT

It was observed that 1-month Red Bull immersion revealed the highest roughness difference (ΔRa) for each self-adhesive restorative material and this was followed by Burn. Whereas, the lowest ΔRa values were observed after 1-day coke and distilled water immersion in all tested material groups (P < 0.05). Coke and distilled water presented the energy drinks' 1-day immersion affect, after 1-week immersion (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The energy drinks have a substantially damaging effect on roughness of self adhesive materials compared with soft drinks and distilled water; and this effect is increasing with exposure duration.

Clinical performance of a combined approach for the esthetic management of fluorosed teeth: Three-year results

OBJECTIVE

The long-term clinical performance of combined therapy including enamel microabrasion and vital bleaching is debatable due to the abrasion of outer enamel surface. The aim of this longitudinal cohort study was to evaluate the 3-year clinical performance of enamel microabrasion in combination with vital tooth bleaching for the esthetic management of fluorosed teeth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fifteen patients with 176 fluorosed incisors and canines were included in this study. All the teeth were treated with enamel microabrasion (Opalustre, Ultradent), and at-home bleaching technique (10% Opalescence PF, Ultradent). Fluorosed teeth were evaluated at baseline, after microabrasion, after combined therapy, and at 3-year follow-up in terms of esthetic criteria (esthetic appearance, brown stains, and opaque white areas), side effects, and patient satisfaction using visual analog scales. The data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Fluorosed teeth revealed significantly better esthetic appearance after microabrasion and combined therapy and at 3-year follow-up compared to those at baseline (P P Conclusions: The combined therapy was effective in the esthetic management of fluorosed teeth. However, a significant relapse was observed in the esthetic appearance and brown stains of these patients after 3 years, which also reduced patient satisfaction.

clinical evaluation of enamel microabrasion for the aesthetic management of mild-to-severe dental fluorosis

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The clinical performance of enamel microabrasion alone for aesthetic management of dental fluorosis is debatable.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of enamel microabrasion for the aesthetic management of mild-to-severe dental fluorosis.

METHODS/MATERIALS

A total of 154 fluorosed incisors and canines in 14 patients on the basis of the fluorosis were included; the teeth were classified as mild (group I, n = 53), moderate (group II, n = 56), and severe (group III, n = 45). All teeth were treated with enamel microabrasion (Opalustre, Ultradent Products, South Jordan, UT, USA). "Improvement in appearance," "changes in brown stains," "changes in opaque white areas," and "requirement for further treatments" were assessed by using visual scale systems. The data were analyzed using nonparametric tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The "improvement in appearance" score was the worst for group III (p < 0.05), whereas the "changes in opaque white areas" score was the best for group I (p < 0.05). Groups II and III did not differ with respect to "changes in brown stains." The proportion of patients who needed further treatment was the highest in Group III (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The severity of fluorosis affected the clinical performance of enamel microabrasion except for its performance of removing brown stains. Increase in fluorosis severity led to increased requirements for further treatments.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The clinical performance of enamel microabrasion is affected by the severity of dental fluorosis, except for its performance of removing brown stains. Even though its performance of improving appearance decreases with the increase in severity of fluorosis, it may not only remove the fluorosis stains but also may increase the success of additional subsequent treatment.

Comparison of enamel microabrasion with a combined approach to the esthetic management of fluorosed teeth

OBJECTIVE

To compare in vivo the efficacy of enamel microabrasion alone or in combination with vital tooth bleaching for the management of tooth discoloration caused by fluorosis.

METHODS

A total of 118 maxillary and mandibular fluorosed incisors and canines in 10 patients, scored from 1 to 7 according to the Tooth Surface Index of Fluorosis, were included in this study. All of the teeth were initially treated with enamel microabrasion (Opalustre, Ultradent Products Inc, South Jordan, UT, USA), and after 24 hours, an in-office bleaching technique (Opalescence Boost, Ultradent) was utilized (n=118). Standardized images of the teeth were taken using a digital camera prior to treatment and 24 hours after the enamel microabrasion and after the in-office bleaching therapy. The study groups were assigned according to evaluation time: a) after enamel microabrasion (Group 1) and b) after the combined approach (enamel microabrasion and in-office bleaching) (Group 2). Two calibrated and blinded examiners scored Group 1 and Group 2 images by comparing each with baseline images for "improvement in appearance," "changes in brown stains," and "changes in white opaque areas" using the visual analogue scales (VAS) that range from 1 to 7. "Patient satisfaction," "tooth sensitivity," and "gingival problems" were also recorded. The data were analyzed using two sample paired Wilcoxon signed-rank, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U-tests (α=0.05).

RESULTS

The combined therapy revealed significantly higher scores than the enamel microabrasion procedure in terms of all of the evaluated criteria (p<0.001). Enamel microabrasion provoked less tooth sensitivity but led to lower patient satisfaction scores than the combined therapy (p<0.001); however, in terms of gingival problems, no differences were found between both groups.

CONCLUSION

The combined therapy, including enamel microabrasion and in-office bleaching, was more effective than enamel microabrasion alone in the esthetic management of fluorosed teeth.
