Integrating "Super Skills for Exams" Programme in the School Curriculum to Support Adolescents Preparing for Their National Examinations in Turkey

Examination stress is the most common stressor reported by adolescents across the globe. Exam stress involves mental distress related to anticipated academic challenges or fear of failure in the examinations, test anxiety, or fear of being unable to meet certain expectations of themselves or others. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a transdiagnostic resilience program (Super Skills for Exams; SSE), when integrated in the school curriculum and delivered by the school counsellors, in reducing exam stress among adolescents who are preparing for their national examinations. SSE is based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), behavioural activation, and social skills training, and includes sessions in promoting healthy lifestyles. Participants were 7129 (3661 female and 3468 male) adolescents in grades 7 and 8, from all the 245 secondary schools from Ugur College in seven regions and 31 cities across Turkey. All the participants completed a set of questionnaires to measure self-efficacy for learning and test anxiety, academic stress, emotion regulation, and lifestyles. Results revealed significant reduction in academic stress (i.e., test anxiety, work pressure, self-expectation, and despondency) and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, and significant increase in self-efficacy and adaptive regulation strategies following the intervention. Adolescents who participated in SSE reported an increase in the consumption of healthy food. This study provides preliminary empirical support for the integration of SSE within the school curriculum for helping adolescents cope with exam stress as they prepare for their national exams.

Internet use during COVID-19 lockdown among young people in low- and middle-income countries: Role of psychological wellbeing

Problematic internet use in adolescents has been shown to significantly increase over the past few years, with COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns reinforcing this phenomena globally. We sought to explore whether problematic internet use in specific countries was related to emotional well-being and importantly whether this is predicted by psychological distress. There is a growing number of studies showing that problematic internet use is increasingly prevalent in countries with emerging economies, however we have yet to find out to what extent other factors are influencing this behaviour in adolescents and young people. This study invited young people from countries such India, Mexico, Philippines and Turkey to complete a set of self-reports on their daily internet habits, social media use, alongside questions on psychological distress, self-esteem, loneliness and escapism. A total of 1182 young people aged between 16 and 25 years old completed these questionnaires online. The results showed that there were significant difference in problematic internet use scores among adolescents in the Philippines and Turkey. More specifically, social media use was significantly higher amongst young people from the Philippines whereas gaming addiction was significantly high in the Turkish sample. These findings also revealed that psychological distress, loneliness, and low self-esteem consistently predicted problematic internet use. Taken together these results emphasise that there are several factors underlying growing figures of problematic internet use in young people, these factors include emotional distress, need for escapism, loneliness, and social media use, however, going forward more nuanced cultural differences should also be considered.

Psychometric properties of the compulsive internet use scale among adolescents in India, Philippines and Turkey

Research shows that internet addiction continues to grow globally, with wider access to the internet and changing use of smartphones. The compulsive internet use scale (CIUS) which has been found to be consistently associated with pathological internet use, is widely considered a measure for prolonged and problematic internet use. CIUS had been translated and adapted in several countries with reports of good reliability. However, to our knowledge this is the first study that examined the psychometric properties of the CIUS scale in three countries who share similar collectivistic attitudes and are a part of growing economies. This link was shared widely amongst young adults (aged 18–25 years), and a total of 837 participants completed the questionnaires. They completed the CIUS scale alongside a measure for escapism and self-esteem. These additional self-reports were added to assess the construct validity of the CIUS. The results from this study confirms the single factor structure of the CIUS as the best fit for this scale, this single factor solution was found for all the three countries. Similarly, high scores of internal reliability were observed for samples in India, Philippines and Turkey. We further found the CIUS to positively correlate with scores of escapism in the Turkish sample only. Taken together these results suggest that the CIUS is an effective measure regardless of country of residence, whilst highlighting the underlying differences in escapism that may need further attention.

Impact of a transdiagnostic prevention protocol for targeting adolescent anxiety and depression

The present study examined the benefit of a transdiagnostic prevention program, Super Skills for Life (SSL), among adolescents with internalizing and/or externalizing problems in two types of school settings (mainstream school and pupil referral unit) using a randomized waitlist-controlled trial (RCT). The main aims were to examine the effects of the SSL-A in reducing internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents, and to identify the moderating role of gender, age, and school type on the intervention outcome. The RCT involved 112 adolescents aged 11 to 14 years old, randomly allocated to either an SSL intervention group or a waitlist-control group (WLC). Adolescents in the intervention group participated immediately in the SSL-A, whereas adolescents in the WLC group received the intervention after the intervention group completed the 6 months follow-up assessment. Results showed that internalizing and externalizing problems were significantly reduced from pre-test to follow-up assessments. Gender, age and school setting moderated the intervention outcome. Specifically, males, younger adolescents and adolescents from mainstream schools showed a significant reduction over time on both internalizing and externalizing problems. This study provides evidence for the benefits of a transdiagnostic prevention program for internalizing and externalizing problems in two types of school settings.

Validation of an Emotion Regulation Training Program on Mental Well-Being

This research aimed to validate an Emotion Regulation Training program cultivating resilience, strengthening interpersonal communication, and enhancing emotional intelligence. A community sample of 104 participants were assigned to either an intervention ( n =  51) or nonactive control ( n =  53) group matched by age and gender. In addition, data were gathered via a cognitive performance test conducted pre- and postmeasurement in a subset of the larger sample ( n =  19 intervention, n =  19 control). Results revealed reappraisal significantly increased in the intervention group, which was associated with a decrease in depressive symptomology, worry, and suppression, and a concurrent increase in overall mental well-being, supporting the validation of the Emotion Regulation Training program.

Influences of genotype and location interactions on oil, fatty acids and agronomical properties of groundnuts

An enhanced adaptation to specific environmental conditions could provide higher seed quality and quantity from groundnuts. In this investigation, nine groundnut genotypes and two controls were evaluated for morphological and oil traits in two different Mediterranean locations. The traits of shelling percentage and pod yield indicated significant differences among the genotypes. The highest pod yield was observed for ACG 154 from the subsp. hypogaea var. hypogaea and ACG 107 from the subsp. fastigiata var. vulgaris in the locations of Adana and Antalya, respectively. The genotype ACG 154 also had about 60 g of 100-seed weight, which is desirable for commercial production as a Runner commercial type. Significant differences were recorded for oil yield, palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids in both locations among the genotypes studied. The groundnut genotypes were further evaluated with allele-specific PCR markers for possible SNP mutations in the ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B genes for high-oleic mutants. ACG 14, ACG 154 and ACG 156 had the mutant ahFAD2A allele, while no ahFAD2B allele mutation was found. The statistical model GGE bi-plot was used to identify the ideal and representative location for each genotype according to pod yield performance. The genotypes ACG 107 and ACG 116 presented the highest oil yield and were relatively stable across locations. Therefore, they should be evaluated as candidates for cultivar releases in the two studied climatic areas. In addition, the selected desirable genotypes in this study can be used as parents in hybridization programs to develop populations for future releases.

Propiedades psicométricas del Centro de Estudios Epidemiológicos, Escala de depresión para adolescentes en Bulgaria

En el presente estudio se evaluaron las propiedades psicométricas de la versión búlgara de la “Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale” (CES-DC), una escala auto-informada de 20 ítems diseñada para medir síntomas depresivos en niños y adolescentes. Un total de 700 adolescentes (323 niñas y 377 niños), de 13 a 17 años, participaron en el estudio. Además de la escala CES-DC, los adolescentes también contestaron el “Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire” (SDQ) y el “Spence Child Anxiety Scale” (SCAS). Los resultados del análisis factorial confirmatorio mostraron índices de ajuste adecuados, demostrando la validez de las cuatro dimensiones de la escala original. La CES-DC correlacionó de manera significativa con las puntuaciones totales de la SDQ y sus subescalas, mostrando que niveles elevados de síntomas depresivos se asocian con niveles altos de problemas emocionales y conductuales. En general, los resultados evidencian la validez factorial y fiabilidad de la versión búlgara de la escala CES-DC en muestras adolescentes de Bulgaria.

Effect of an Emotion Regulation Training Program on Mental Well-Being

This study aimed to develop and validate a brief emotion regulation training program that improved mental well-being. The program was preventative in nature, designed to build resilience while fostering more satisfying personal and professional relationships in a community sample. It was developed and piloted with 10 graduate students during Study 1; for Study 2, a community sample of 75 adults were randomly allocated to either a treatment (n = 38) or control (n = 37) group. In the pilot program, the social validity of the program was confirmed, while study 2 demonstrated significant changes in positive coping techniques (i.e., reappraisal) at one-year follow-up in the treatment group when compared with the control. These findings may have broad implications in the health sector due to the brevity, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of this newly designed intervention.

Evaluation of the reproductive toxicity of naproxen sodium and meloxicam in male rats

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme inhibitors have generally been used in short-term pain management and also to treat inflammation chronically. It is known that COX enzyme and prostaglandins play important roles in the regulation of reproductive functions in females. However, there are relatively few studies for the male reproductive system, and the results of these studies are contradictory. In this study, sperm count and motility, COX-1, COX-2, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels in testis tissue, plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone levels, and histopathological examination of testis tissue were evaluated after naproxen sodium and meloxicam administration in male rats. Also, testis superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione (GSH) levels were measured to investigate the oxidation status. According to our results, sperm count and motility were significantly decreased in treatment groups. Plasma hormone levels did not show any statistical differences between the groups. COX-1, PGE2, and PGF2α levels were significantly decreased, while the decreases in COX-2 and PGE1 levels did not show any significance statistically. Testis SOD, catalase, GPx, and GSH levels were decreased significantly. According to the results of histopathological examination, damage in seminiferous tubules, where spermatogenesis developed, was observed. In conclusion, naproxen sodium and meloxicam decreased the sperm count and motility and also induced the damage of seminiferous tubules as a direct effect without affecting plasma hormone levels in our study. The mechanism of the reproductive toxicity induced by these agents may be based on the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and the induction of oxidative stress can be emphasized as a secondary factor.

First Report of a 16SrIX Group (Pigeon Pea Witches'-Broom) Phytoplasma Associated with Sesame Phyllody in Turkey

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an important oilseed crops widely grown in the southern regions of Turkey. Sesame seeds are primarily used in production of tahini as well as a garnish on sweets and bakery products in the country. Sesame plants with phyllody disease symptoms have increasingly been observed in the fields of Antalya province since 2007. The disease incidence in these fields was found to range from 37 to 62% (2). Infected plants display a variety of the disease symptoms such as virescence, asymptomatic shoot proliferation, infertile flower formation, reduced leaf size, and thin and weak capsule development. Total genomic DNA was extracted from samples collected from symptomatic (10 plants) and asymptomatic healthy-looking plants (10 plants) using a CTAB method and amplified with universal primers P1/P7 and R16F2n/R16R2 in direct and nested PCR, respectively (1,3). Amplifications of the DNA from the symptomatic plants yielded a product of 1.8 kb in direct and 1.2 kb in nested PCR assays. No amplification was observed in symptomless plants of the same age and collected from the same fields. Amplicons were purified, cloned in a pTZ57R/T Vector, and sequenced using a Beckman Coulter 8000 CEQ Genetic Analysis System. Four aligned 16S rDNA sequences (1,845 bp) were found to be all identical and belonging to one species. One sequence was deposited in GenBank under the accession number KC139791. A BLAST similarity search revealed that the sequence shared 99% homology with the sequences of the members of 16SrIX group phytoplasmas, 'Brassica rapa' phyllody phytoplasma (HM559246.1) and Iranian Almond witches'-broom phytoplasma (DQ195209.1) available in GenBank. In addition, iPhyClassifier software (4) was employed to create a virtual RFLP profile. The analysis showed that the RFLP profile of the sesame phytoplasma 16S rDNA sequence is identical (a similarity coefficient of 1.00) to the profile of the 16Sr group IX phytoplasma reference sequence (Y16389). A phylogenetic tree was also constructed using the neighbor joining plot option of the Clustal X program. The sequence clustered together with 16SrIX group phytoplasmas. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a natural infection of sesame by a new phytoplasma species from the 16SrIX group in Turkey. References: (1) D. E. Gundersen and I.-M. Lee. Phytopathol. Dual phase 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography with forced diuresis in diagnostic imaging evaluation of bladder cancer

INTRODUCTION

(18)F-FDG PET has been regarded as a limited value in urooncology due to urinary excretion of the tracer. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the clinical value of dual-phase FDG PET/CT with forced diuresis protocol (iv furosemide-voiding and oral hydration) in invasive or high grade bladder cancer.

METHODS

Fifty-one patients were included in this study. All patients underwent standard staging procedures and dual-phase FDG PET/CT before planned therapy. PET/CT findings before and after furosemide were compared with each other for pelvic region. Dual phase PET/CT findings were also compared with the results of prior imaging studies and all findings were correlated with final diagnosis (histopathology or clinical follow-up for at least 12 months).

RESULTS

Intravesical FDG activity significantly decreased in 90% of the patients with forced diuresis protocol. Eighty eight percent of the bladder findings and 20% of the local lymph node metastases, and other pelvic findings (local invasion and second primary malignancy of prostate) were detected only by the additional pelvic PET/CT images. As a result, dual phase PET/CT changed the staging and/or the therapy strategy in 16 patients (31%).

CONCLUSION

Dual phase FDG PET/CT contributes staging and decision of therapy strategy by detecting local disease and pelvic metastases with high accuracy when combined with forced diuresis protocol. Thus, we recommend dual phase imaging method with forced diuresis protocol in FDG PET/CT for bladder cancer and all other urogenital system malignities.

Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) for the detection of skeletal muscle and skin metastases in uterine leiomyosarcoma: a case report

We report the clinical value of FDG PET/CT imaging in a 57-year-old woman who was diagnosed with uterine leimyosarcoma 6 years ago. In a staging procedure, whole body FDG PET/CT discloses the presence of both local recurrence and remote metastases at widespread musculocutaneous sites, liver and femur. With its advantage of scanning the whole body in a single procedure, we propose the use of PET/CT imaging for the evaluation of patients with uterine leimyosarcomas, a tumor with a propensity for widespread hematogenous spread to unusual sites.
