Abstract
ANITA's fourth long-duration balloon flight in 2016 detected 29 cosmic-ray (CR)-like events on a background of 0.37_{-0.17}^{+0.27} anthropogenic events. CRs are mainly seen in reflection off the Antarctic ice sheets, creating a phase-inverted waveform polarity. However, four of the below-horizon CR-like events show anomalous noninverted polarity, a p=5.3×10^{-4} chance if due to background. All anomalous events are from locations near the horizon; ANITA-IV observed no steeply upcoming anomalous events similar to the two such events seen in prior flights.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes is an important food-borne pathogen that is tolerant to many of the stresses commonly used during food preservation. Outside the host, the bacterium has a saprophytic lifestyle that includes periodic exposure to solar irradiance. The blue component of this light is known to influence the activity of the stress-inducible sigma factor Sigma B (σB). In this study, the influence of temperature and growth phase on the response of L. monocytogenes to blue light was investigated and the global transcriptional response to blue light was elucidated using an RNAseq-based approach. Stationary phase cells were found to be significantly more resistant to killing by blue light (470 nm) than exponential phase cells. Temperature also had a marked effect on blue light resistance with cells cultured at 37°C being much more sensitive than cells grown at 30°C. The role of σB in light tolerance was confirmed but this effect was observed only at 30°C. σB activation by blue light was assessed by measuring the transcriptional response of known σB-dependent genes (sigB, lmo2230, and opuCA) to light. The transcripts were induced by blue light only at 30°C suggesting that blue light fails to activate σB at 37°C. The light-induced transcription at 30°C was dependent on a functional blue light sensor, Lmo0799 (which we rename herein as RsbL). A transcriptomic analysis of the response to sub-lethal levels of blue light found that the changes in transcription were almost entirely σB-dependent. A mutant where the light sensing mechanism of RsbL was inactivated through an amino acid substitution (Cys56Ala) was found to have an attenuated response to blue light, but residual activation of σB-dependent genes suggested that alternative routes for activation of σB by light are likely to exist. Overall, the study highlights the central role of σB in the response of this pathogen to visible light and further shows that light sensing is absent at temperatures that exist within the mammalian host.

Abstract
We report on an upward traveling, radio-detected cosmic-ray-like impulsive event with characteristics closely matching an extensive air shower. This event, observed in the third flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload, is consistent with a similar event reported in a previous flight. These events could be produced by the atmospheric decay of an upward-propagating τ lepton produced by a ν_{τ} interaction, although their relatively steep arrival angles create tension with the standard model neutrino cross section. Each of the two events have a posteriori background estimates of ≲10^{-2} events. If these are generated by τ-lepton decay, then either the charged-current ν_{τ} cross section is suppressed at EeV energies, or the events arise at moments when the peak flux of a transient neutrino source was much larger than the typical expected cosmogenic background neutrinos.

Abstract
Two types of resistant soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) sources are widely used against soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe). These include Peking-type soybean, whose resistance requires both the rhg1-a and Rhg4 alleles, and PI 88788-type soybean, whose resistance requires only the rhg1-b allele. Multiple copy number of PI 88788-type GmSNAP18, GmAAT, and GmWI12 in one genomic segment simultaneously contribute to rhg1-b resistance. Using an integrated set of genetic and genomic approaches, we demonstrate that the rhg1-a Peking-type GmSNAP18 is sufficient for resistance to SCN in combination with Rhg4. The two SNAPs (soluble NSF attachment proteins) differ by only five amino acids. Our findings suggest that Peking-type GmSNAP18 is performing a different role in SCN resistance than PI 88788-type GmSNAP18. As such, this is an example of a pathogen resistance gene that has evolved to underlie two types of resistance, yet ensure the same function within a single plant species.

Abstract
We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were previously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here, we report on characteristics of these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30 km above the surface of Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible τ-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the standard model τ-neutrino cross section.

Abstract
For 50 years, cosmic-ray air showers have been detected by their radio emission. We present the first laboratory measurements that validate electrodynamics simulations used in air shower modeling. An experiment at SLAC provides a beam test of radio-frequency (rf) radiation from charged particle cascades in the presence of a magnetic field, a model system of a cosmic-ray air shower. This experiment provides a suite of controlled laboratory measurements to compare to particle-level simulations of rf emission, which are relied upon in ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray air shower detection. We compare simulations to data for intensity, linearity with magnetic field, angular distribution, polarization, and spectral content. In particular, we confirm modern predictions that the magnetically induced emission in a dielectric forms a cone that peaks at the Cherenkov angle and show that the simulations reproduce the data within systematic uncertainties.

Abstract
Ixodes ricinus transmits bacterial, protozoal and viral pathogens, causing disease and forming an increasing health concern in Europe. ANTIDotE is an European Commission funded consortium of seven institutes, which aims to identify and characterize tick proteins involved in feeding and pathogen transmission. The knowledge gained will be used to develop and evaluate anti-tick vaccines that may prevent multiple human tick-borne diseases. Strategies encompassing anti-tick vaccines to prevent transmission of pathogens to humans, animals or wildlife will be developed with relevant stakeholders with the ultimate aim of reducing the incidence of tick-borne diseases in humans.

Abstract
A quantitative genetics approach was developed to identify the genomic regions that control relative water content (RWC) in field-grown barley. The trait was previously demonstrated to be a relevant screening tool of drought-tolerance in cereals, as well as a good indicator of plant water-status. The trait was measured at the heading stage on flag leaves recorded from 167 recombinant inbred lines grown in several Mediterranean sites (Montpellier, France; Meknès, Morocco; Le Kef, Tunisia). The results obtained confirmed that several genomic regions are implicated in the total phenotypic variation of RWC. A total of nine chromosomal regions were identified. One region situated on the long arm of chromosome 6H contains the most-consistent QTL obtained in the present study. This region was previously identified as controlling RWC, as well as leaf osmotic potential under water stress and osmotic adjustment, from an experiment conducted in growth-chamber conditions with the same genetic background. The confirmation of the role of this region in the genetic control of water and turgor status underlined its interest for breeding purposes in the Mediterranean area. In addition, the presence of several dehydrin loci in the same chromosomal area reinforce its interest for genomics analyses to confirm, or not to confirm, the implication of these genes in the variation of RWC.

Abstract
The effects of dietary fat sources on the general performance of broiler chickens and the incidence of sudden death syndrome (SDS) were investigated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, a wheat-soy diet supplemented with sunflower oil was found to improve significantly (P less than .05) performance characteristics and reduce the mortality attributed to SDS as compared with the same diet supplemented with tallow. The blood lipid parameters--total lipids, triglycerides, and cholesterol at 4 and 7 weeks of age--were not affected (P greater than .05) by the type of fat used in the diet. In Experiment 2, wheat-soy diets were supplemented with either tallow or sunflower oil at the same dietary levels and two stocking densities (.09 m2/bird or .08 m2/bird). The sunflower oil diet significantly (P less than .05) improved the general performance of the birds and reduced mortality from SDS. Bird density had no significant effect. Fatty acid composition of the heart and liver tissues from SDS birds showed differences when compared with culled birds (leg problems) from the same experimental period. In the heart tissue, increased palmitic (16:0) and oleic (18:1) acids were observed, while linoleic (18:2) and arachidonic (20:4) acids were lower. Liver tissue showed increased 18:1 and lower 18:2 and 20:4. Analysis for copper and zinc in heart tissue did not indicate significant (P greater than .05) treatment effects, but calcium concentration was significantly (P greater than .05) higher in SDS than culled birds. Analysis performed on the liver tissue showed significant (P lesser than .05) differences in copper and zinc between these two groups of birds.
