Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the impact of age, season and ejaculation on ram testicular blood flow and echotexture. The survey was conducted biweekly on 7 Chios rams for one year, including breeding and non-breeding periods. The rams were divided into 2 age groups: 3 rams 2-6 years old (mature) and 4 rams 9-13 years old (old). Hemodynamic indices [Pulsatility index (PI), Resistive index (RI), End-diastolic velocity (EDV), testicular artery Diameter (D), Time-averaged maximum velocity (TAVM), Blood flow volume (BFV)] and echotexture parameters [Mean value (MV), Contrast (Con), Gray value distribution (GVD), Run length distribution (RunLD), Long run emphasis (LRunEm), Entropy (Ent), Correlation (Cor), Standard deviation (StD), Gray variance (GV) and Gradient mean value (GMV)] were evaluated in each testis before and after ejaculation. Ejaculation did not affect testes blood flow or echotexture (p>0.05). PI and RI were higher in the breeding period compared to the non-breeding period, for both testes (p⟨0.001). Left testis GV and Cor before ejaculation were lower (p=0.01) and higher (p=0.03), respectively, in the breeding compared to the non-breeding period. Left testis D (p=0.005) and BFV (p⟨0.001) were higher in old compared to mature rams after ejaculation. Right testis Con (p=0.03) and Cor (p=0.05) before ejaculation were higher in old rams, whereas right testis Ent after ejaculation was higher in mature rams (p=0.05). In conclusion, testicular blood flow and echotexture are affected by season and ram age, but not by ejaculation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) results of frozen thawed bull semen using three different chambers. Sixty bull frozen semen samples were thawed (37°C; 30 sec), extended in PBS (30×106 spermatozoa/mL; 37°C) and incubated (37°C; 2 min). Each semen sample was analyzed by CASA [total motility, progressive (pro)/ non-progressive/rapid/medium/slow movement spermatozoa, VCL, VSL, VAP, ALH, BCF, LIN, STR, WOB and hyperactive spermatozoa] using three different chambers: a Makler® chamber (MC; 10 μm); a Leja 4 chamber slide (LC; 20 μm); and a Glass slide covered with a coverslip (GSC; 10.3 μm). The Makler chamber gave higher values compared to both the LC and GSC for almost all examined parameters. No systematic effect was evident between LC and GSC for VCL, VSL, VAP, LIN, STR, WOB, ALH, and BCF. Method agreement between MC and LC was generally moderate, between MC and GSC poor and between LC and GSC moderate to good. In general, narrower limits of agreement were found in samples with lower values. In conclusion, the CASA outcomes could be influenced by the analysis chambers. This finding should be taken into consideration when comparing results from different laboratories.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The objective of this study was to determine the renal dimensions in adult cows and to investigate whether they are affected by the breed, the age of the animals and the presence of subclinical renal histopathological lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS The kidneys of 57 adult female dairy (44 Holstein) and beef (13 Limousine-Cross) cattle aged≥2years obtained at an abattoir were used for the purpose of the study. The greatest pole-to-pole length and the maximum width were measured with a digital caliper. A renal sample obtained from a central pole of each kidney underwent histopathologic examination. RESULTS Renal dimensions were significantly affected by the breed and the age of the animals without however been affected by the presence of mild histopathologically detected lesions. The renal size was significantly higher in Holstein cows compared to Limousine-Cross ones and significantly lower in cows aged more than 6years than the youngest ones. Left kidney was shorter and wider in the majority of animals. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that breed and age of animals are significant factors that affect renal size in cows. They further prove that mild histologically detected renal lesions do not significantly alter renal dimensions. Although no significant difference was detected, the obtained results tend to confirm the well documented morphological difference (asymmetry) in cattle between right and left kidney.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the efficiency of progesterone supplementation post insemination (p.i.) in the fertility of dairy cows under commercial farm conditions. At initiation of the study, 405 cows from three farms -irrespective of their open days- were bred after showing heat or after synchronization. Subsequently, the cows were randomly allocated to receive a progesterone-releasing intra-vaginal device (PRID®) between D5 and D17 p.i (P4+, n=213), or to remain untreated (P4-, n=192). Pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) did not differ between P4+ (42.3%) and P4- (41.2%, P = 0.82) groups. However, the treatment improved P/AI in cows enrolled in the study after the second p.p. insemination (46.8 vs. 25.5, P = 0.02). In the farm that showed the lower days to insemination before treatment, progesterone supplementation tended to raise the P/AI (48.2 vs. 23.5, P = 0.08). However, in the farm with the greater fertility the P4+ group had significantly lower P/AI than the P4- group (37.7 vs. 57.4, P = 0.03). Conclusively, the beneficial effect of the post-insemination administration of PRID is mainly apparent only after the second p.p. insemination and probably during early lactation when fertility is suppressed.

Abstract
This Research Paper addresses the hypothesis whether in dairy ewes: periparturient β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentrations are associated with milk yield, composition and udder halves with increased somatic cell counts (SCC ≥ 0.5 × 106 cells/mL). A total of 186 Chios ewes reared under intensive system were used for this research. Serum BHBA and NEFA concentrations were measured before lambing (-30d, -15d), and BHBA concentrations after lambing (+7d, +15d, +30d, +45d). Milk samples were collected at 15, 30 and 45days in milk (DIM). Total milk yield (MY) of the first 30, 60 and 90 DIM and total fortnightly milk yield (FMY) produced from 15 to 59 DIM were recorded. Positive associations between BHBA at +7d and MY of the first 30, 60 and 90 DIM were revealed (P < 0.001). For every increased unit of BHBA at +15d, +30d and +45d, FMY was decreased (DIM: 15 – 29 and 30 – 44) (P = 0.001 and P = 0.015, respectively) or increased (DIM: 45 – 59) (P < 0.001). BHBA before lambing (-30d, -15d) affected the number of halves presented SCC ≥ 0.5 × 106 cells/mL at 15 and 30 DIM (P = 0.011, P = 0.014, P = 0.009, P = 0.096, respectively). Finally, for every increased unit of BHBA during lactation (+15d, +30d, +45d) a decrease in the concentration of milk in proteins, solids not fat and lactose was noted (P < 0.001). This work demonstrates the associations of periparturient blood biochemical parameters (BHBA, NEFA) with milk yield and specific milk production characteristics.

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate the clinical impact and certain virological and haematological parameters following immunization of cattle against lumpy skin disease (LSD). The study was conducted in a dairy cattle farm (215 animals), immunized with a Neethling strain-based live vaccine. Twenty-seven animals (14 lactating cows, four dry cows and nine calves) were randomly selected for repetitive blood and saliva samplings. An EvaGreen-based real-time PCR was designed to differentiate vaccine from field LSDVs. Vaccinated animals underwent examination for adverse reactions. Nodule samples were collected from two representative cases for histopathological testing and virus identification. Milk yield was calculated based on bulk-tank measurements of all lactating cows (79). Viral DNA was detected between days 6-15 post-vaccination (p.v.) at 63% of the sampled animals (17/27). Saliva and bulk-tank milk samples were LSDV-negative. Pronounced swelling was observed at injection sites of 12% of the immunized animals (26/215), starting at day 6 p.v., and was resolved after 2-4 days. Small-sized (<0.5 cm) cutaneous lumps were developed between days 8-18 p.v. at 9% of the vaccinated animals (19/215). These were observed in adult cows and not in calves/heifers. Resolution was observable 10 days post-development. The vaccine virus was also identified in nodules and injection-site aspirates. Haematological changes (e.g., lower leucocyte counts) were observed in cows and not in calves. Daily milk production was being reduced during the first 12 days p.v. LSD immunization of cows resulted in nodules and low viraemia levels. The fact that nodules and haematological changes were not observed in calves, along with the low viraemia, supports the reduced virulence of the Neethling vaccine strain. The characteristic nodules in vaccinated animals could allow clinical differentiation from those observed in LSD. The developed real-time PCR efficiently differentiates infected from vaccinated cattle, and should be further validated as a tool in LSD surveillance.

Abstract
CASE HISTORY A routine ultrasonographic examination for pregnancy diagnosis in a 3-year-old ewe revealed a normal embryo located in the uterine cavity and an abnormal mass located in the abdomen. At the time of examination, the ewe was 4.5 months pregnant, but 10 months previously she had undergone a caesarean section due to dystocia. CLINICAL FINDINGS The abnormal mass (12 cm × 8 cm) was located outside the uterine cavity; it was anechoic at the periphery, and in the centre there was an echogenic embryo-like structure. Exploratory laparotomy was performed, which revealed an ectopic pregnancy through the caesarean scar. TREATMENT The ectopic foetus was excised and the caesarean scar was repaired. The ewe made a complete recovery and the intrauterine pregnancy was completed to full-term, resulting in the birth of a healthy female lamb 35 days after the removal of the ectopic foetus. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Ectopic pregnancies have previously been described in ewes. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first report of an ectopic pregnancy through a caesarean scar in sheep or any other farm animal species.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate post-thaw quality of frozen dog semen processed with diluents containing different antioxidants. Ejaculates were collected, pooled and evaluated for concentration, motility, rapid steady forward movement (RSF movement), viability, acrosomal integrity and by the hypo-osmotic swelling test. Also, superoxide production, hydroxyl radicals and total reactive oxygen species (tROS) were determined. The pool was divided in seven aliquots, for control and test conditions, which were processed for cryopreservation. The sperm pellets were diluted to a final concentration of 200x10(6)sperm/ml with TRIS-glucose-egg yolk extender containing one of the following supplements: vitamin C (1.5mM), NAC (N-acetyl-l-cysteine; 1.5mM), taurine (0.6mM), catalase (300U/ml), vitamin E (0.3mM) and B16 [5-(4-dimethylamino-phenyl)-2-phenyl-penta-2,4-dienoic acid; 0.3mM]. Post-thaw semen evaluation showed that mean (+/-S.E.M.) motility was increased (p<0.001) after addition of catalase (49.75+/-3.63 versus 39.00+/-2.90 in controls), whereas more spermatozoa with RSF movement were observed (p<0.001) after the catalase, NAC and vitamin E treatments (31.75+/-3.46, 28.00+/-3.27, 26.75+/-3.15, respectively, versus 17.00+/-2.26 in controls). Viability was increased (p<0.001) after addition of catalase, taurine, NAC and tocopherol (66.00+/-3.03, 61.90+/-2.48, 60.60+/-1.93 and 60.50+/-4.12, respectively, versus 51.70+/-2.81 in controls). The percentage of swollen spermatozoa was increased after addition of catalase and taurine (61.75+/-1.61 and 61.25+/-1.49, respectively, versus 55.65+/-1.64 in controls). Acrosomal integrity was not influenced in any case. B16 addition had adverse effects on all parameters evaluated. None of the reactive oxygen species were significantly reduced post-thaw in antioxidant treated semen. The results suggest that catalase had the most pronounced effect in improving post-thaw quality of canine spermatozoa.

Abstract
The effects of a glucogenic preparation (Nutrimix®) or β-carotene (Rovimix® beta carotene) supplementation of ewes during mid- to late-lactation on their milk yield were assessed in a study where 66 Chios-breed ewes were allocated into three equal (n = 22) groups. Ewes in group A received daily a glucogenic preparation and those in group B β-carotene, starting 35 d before estrus synchronization until 7 d after artificial insemination (supplementation period); ewes in group C were untreated controls. The estrus cycle was synchronized and double AI was carried out 48 and 60 h after withdrawal of progestagen sponges. Milk yield was measured daily during the supplementation period. Blood samples were collected at 2-h intervals, from 28 to 54 h after sponge withdrawal; the concentration of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured. Increased milk yield was recorded after supplementation with the glucogenic preparation (P < 0.05), but not with β-carotene (P > 0.05). There were no differences in LH concentration during surge release in supplemented ewes; furthermore, there were no differences between groups in body weight and litter size. It is concluded that supplementation of ewes with a glucogenic preparation during mid- to late-lactation may lead to improved milk production. Abstract
Twenty-five gilts and sows, after pregnancy confirmation using the ultrasonic method, were randomly divided and allocated to the following five experimental groups: SAL0 = negative controls, SAL20 = 20 mg salinomycin per kg of feed, SAL40 = 40 mg salinomycin per kg of feed, SAL60 = 60 mg salinomycin per kg of feed and SAL80 = 80 mg salinomycin per kg of feed. All animals remained under treatment for two consecutive breeding cycles. The sows were fed a home-mixed balanced feed during gestations and lactations. At the third, tenth and eighteenth day of each lactation, blood and milk samples were collected. Blood samples were analysed for cholesterol and total lipids and milk samples were analysed for the determination of the fat, lactose, protein, ash and totals solids concentrations. In all treated groups, cholesterol concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) compared with the controls. Total lipid concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in SAL40 and SAL60 groups in comparison with SAL0 and SAL20 groups, during both cycles. Milk fat concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in treated groups than in the control group; the highest concentrations were observed at SAL40 and SAL60 groups. In all treated groups, concentrations of milk lactose were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those observed in the negative control group. Milk protein concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in SAL40 and SAL60 groups compared with the SAL0 group, but there was no significant difference in SAL20 and SAL80 groups in comparison with the SAL0 group. No significant differences were observed concerning milk ash concentrations between all groups. In all treated groups, concentrations of total solids were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in comparison with the control group; the highest concentrations were observed in the SAL40 and SAL60 groups. It is concluded that the use of salinomycin in sow diet, increases concentrations of blood triglycerides and cholesterol and improves the quality of milk, thus reflecting on higher weight gain and survival rate of suckling piglets.

Abstract
The efficacy of Paciflor, a bioregulator containing live Bacillus cereus CIP 5832 spores, was assessed in sows during late pregnancy and lactation, as well as in their piglets up to the growing phase. Two groups each of 30 pregnant gilts and sows received normal feed (T1 group), or feed with 85 g Paciflor per ton feed (T2 group), from 15 days prior to farrowing up to the end of the lactation period. Furthermore, 15 litters of the T1 group and 15 litters of the T2 group, were offered normal feed from the 5th to the 70th days of life (T1.1 and T2.1 groups, respectively), while the remaining 15 litters each of the T1 and T2 groups received the same feed but including Paciflor at a dose of 100 g/ton (from day 5 to day 49) and 50 g/ton (from day 50 to day 70). These pig litters were T1.2 and T2.2, respectively. No differences were seen between the T1 and T2 groups with respect to the clinical observations (loss of appetite, fever, mastitis, metritis and returns to oestrus, treatments applied, deaths, or removals to the slaughterhouse), gestation length, bodyweight of sows at farrowing or litter-size at birth. However, during lactation, the fat content of the dam's milk was increased (0.46% more fat), the body weight loss of sows was reduced and the number of weaned pigs per sow was increased (0.6 more pigs per litter) after administration of Paciflor (P < 0.05). Weaning to service interval was also reduced by 1 day (P < 0.05). Moreover, piglets receiving Paciflor with their feed (T1.2 and T2.2 groups) showed less incidence of scours and lower mortality compared to the untreated piglets (T1.1 and T2.1 groups), particularly those pigs originating from Paciflor-treated dams (T2.2 group) (P < 0.05). Despite the fact that no difference was seen between groups with regard to the amount of feed consumed, the feed conversion ratio of Paciflor-treated piglets (T2.2 and T1.2) was significantly improved compared to that of the untreated piglets (T2.1 and T1.1) (P < 0.05). With respect to weight gain, for the Paciflor-treated piglets, those born to Paciflor-treated mothers (T2.2) were 0.56 kg heavier than those born to untreated dams (T1.2) (P < 0.05). It is concluded that administration of Paciflor in dams during the end of pregnancy and during lactation, as well as to their offspring during suckling and the flat-deck period is beneficial for the survival and growth of the piglets.

Abstract
A competitive inhibition-type enzymeimmunoassay (EIA) has been developed using 3-hemisuccinate-oestrone-peroxidase as conjugate for direct measurement of the hormone in swine urine. The method has a minimum detection level at 0.3 ng ml(-1) and satisfactory specificity, recovery and reproducibility. In a field trial with a group of 387 sows (7 in oestrus, 16 non-pregnant and 364 pregnant sows at several stages post service), it was shown that the assay is potentially an accurate pregnancy test in assessing the viability of the fetoplacental unit from day 23 up to day 30 post service. The assay is well suited for routine testing, particularly as a swine early pregnancy diagnosis test since urine sampling is easier and does not disturb the animal, while in the present assay there is no restriction in the time of sampling and the sample storage conditions.

Abstract
Twenty-two polytocous lactating Chios ewes were used to test the effects of bovine somatotropin (bST) on reproduction, progesterone concentration and LH secretion during estrus. Half of the ewes were injected every second week with 160 mg bST in a prolonged release vehicle, from the fifth day post partum until the end of lactation, while the remaining ones were used as controls. All animals were fed the same amount of ration. Supplementation with bST resulted in an increase of milk production (P<0.05) and an insignificant trend for delayed resumption of normal estrous cycles. Although there were no differences between groups, there was also a tendency for the bST group to display lower progesterone concentrations during the first three fortnights after the onset of normal estrous cycles and higher ones during the last three fortnights of the experiment, compared with the control group. Duration of the first normal luteal phase after delivery of the bST group was found to be shorter compared with the control group (P<0.05). After estrous synchronization the bST group showed a shorter estrus compared with the control group (P<0.05). Average and baseline LH concentrations during synchronized estrous in the bST group was lower (P<0.001) compared with the control group. Additionally, the conception rate did not differ between the two groups. This study supports the concept that the beneficial effects of bST treatment on milk production outweigh the potential deleterious effects on reproduction.
