Reversible, irreversible, and mixed regimes for periodically driven disks in random obstacle arrays

We examine an assembly of repulsive disks interacting with a random obstacle array under a periodic drive and find a transition from reversible to irreversible dynamics as a function of drive amplitude or disk density. At low densities and drives, the system rapidly forms a reversible state where the disks return to their exact positions at the end of each cycle. In contrast, at high amplitudes or high densities, the system enters an irreversible state where the disks exhibit normal diffusion. Between these two regimes, there can be an intermediate irreversible state where most of the system is reversible, but localized irreversible regions are present that are prevented from spreading through the system due to a screening effect from the obstacles. We also find states that we term "combinatorial reversible states" in which the disks return to their original positions after multiple driving cycles. In these states, individual disks exchange positions but form the same configurations during the subcycles of the larger reversible cycle.

Motility-induced phase separation and frustration in active matter swarmalators

We introduce a two dimensional system of active matter swarmalators composed of elastically interacting run-and-tumble active disks with an internal parameter ϕ_{i}. The disks experience an additional attractive or repulsive force with neighboring disks depending upon their relative difference in ϕ_{i}, making them similar to swarmalators used in robotic systems. In the absence of the internal parameter, the system forms a motility-induced phase separated (MIPS) state, but when the swarmalator interactions are present, a wide variety of other active phases appear depending upon whether the interaction is attractive or repulsive and whether the particles act to synchronize or ant-synchronize their internal parameter values. These phases include a gas-free gel regime, arrested clusters, a labyrinthine state, a regular MIPS state, a frustrated MIPS state for attractive antisynchronization, and a superlattice MIPS state for attractive synchronization.

Vortex Lattices in Active Nematics with Periodic Obstacle Arrays

We numerically model a two-dimensional active nematic confined by a periodic array of fixed obstacles. Even in the passive nematic, the appearance of topological defects is unavoidable due to planar anchoring by the obstacle surfaces. We show that a vortex lattice state emerges as activity is increased, and that this lattice may be tuned from "ferromagnetic" to "antiferromagnetic" by varying the gap size between obstacles. We map the rich variety of states exhibited by the system as a function of distance between obstacles and activity, including a pinned defect state, motile defects, the vortex lattice, and active turbulence. We demonstrate that the flows in the active turbulent phase can be tuned by the presence of obstacles, and explore the effects of a frustrated lattice geometry on the vortex lattice phase.

Skyrmion Transport and Annihilation in Funnel Geometries

Using atomistic simulations, we have investigated the transport and annihilation of skyrmions interacting with a funnel array under a current applied perpendicular to the funnel axis. We find that transport without annihilation is possible at low currents, when the motion is dominated by skyrmion-skyrmion interactions and skyrmions push each other through the funnel opening. Skyrmion annihilation occurs for higher currents when skyrmions in the upper half of the sample exert pressure on skyrmions in the bottom half of the sample due to the external current. Upon interacting with the funnel wall, the skyrmions undergo a size reduction that makes it easier for them to pass through the funnel opening. We find five phases as a function of the applied current and the size of the funnel opening: (i) pinned, (ii) transport without annihilation, (iii) transport with annihilation, (iv) complete annihilation, and (v) a reentrant pinning phase that only occurs for very narrow openings. Our findings provide insight into how to control skyrmion transport using funnel arrays by delineating regimes in which transport of skyrmions is possible as well as the conditions under which annihilation occurs.

Characterizing different motility-induced regimes in active matter with machine learning and noise

We examine motility-induced phase separation (MIPS) in two-dimensional run-and-tumble disk systems using both machine learning and noise fluctuation analysis. Our measures suggest that within the MIPS state there are several distinct regimes as a function of density and run time, so that systems with MIPS transitions exhibit an active fluid, an active crystal, and a critical regime. The different regimes can be detected by combining an order parameter extracted from principal component analysis with a cluster stability measurement. The principal component-derived order parameter is maximized in the critical regime, remains low in the active fluid, and has an intermediate value in the active crystal regime. We demonstrate that machine learning can better capture dynamical properties of the MIPS regimes compared to more standard structural measures such as the maximum cluster size. The different regimes can also be characterized via changes in the noise power of the fluctuations in the average speed. In the critical regime, the noise power passes through a maximum and has a broad spectrum with a 1/f^{1.6} signature, similar to the noise observed near depinning transitions or for solids undergoing plastic deformation.

Dynamic phases and combing effects for elongated particles moving over quenched disorder

We consider a two-dimensional system of elongated particles driven over a landscape containing randomly placed pinning sites. For varied pinning site density, external drive magnitude, and particle elongation, we find a wide variety of dynamic phases, including random structures, stripe or combed phases with nematic order, and clogged states. The different regimes can be identified by examining nematic ordering, cluster size, number of pinned particles, and transverse diffusion. In some regimes we find that the pinning can enhance the particle alignment, producing a nonmonotonic signature in the nematic ordering with a maximum at a particular combination of pinning density and drive. The optimal nematic occurs when a sufficient number of particles can be pinned, generating a local shear and leading to what we call a combing effect. At high drives, the combing effect is reduced when the number of pinned particles decreases. For stronger pinning, the particles form a heterogeneous clustered or clogged state that depins into a fluctuating state with high diffusion.

Friction-mediated phase transition in confined active nematics

Using a minimal continuum model, we investigate the interplay between circular confinement and substrate friction in active nematics. Upon increasing the friction from low to high, we observe a dynamical phase transition from a circulating flow phase to an anisotropic flow phase in which the flow tends to align perpendicular to the nematic director at the boundary. We demonstrate that both the flow structure and dynamic correlations in the latter phase differ from those of an unconfined, active turbulent system and may be controlled by the prescribed nematic boundary conditions. Our results show that substrate friction and geometric confinement act as valuable control parameters in active nematics.

Noise and Thermal Depinning of Wigner Crystals

We examine changes in the depinning threshold and conduction noise fluctuations for driven Wigner crystals in the presence of quenched disorder. At low temperatures there is a well defined depinning threshold and a strong peak in the noise power with 1⁄f noise characteristics. At higher temperatures, the depinning threshold shifts to lower drives and the noise, which is also reduced in power, becomes more white in character. At lower temperatures, a washboard frequency appears when the system depins elastically or forms a moving smectic state; however, this washboard signal is strongly reduced for higher temperatures and completely disappears above the melting temperature of a system without quenched disorder. Our results are in good agreement with recent transport and noise studies for systems where electron crystal depinning is believed to arise, and also show how noise can be used to distinguish between crystal, glass, and liquid phases.&#xD.

Transition from susceptible-infected to susceptible-infected-recovered dynamics in a susceptible-cleric-zombie-recovered active matter model

The susceptible-infected (SI) and susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) models provide two distinct representations of epidemic evolution, distinguished by whether or not the number of susceptibles always drops to zero at long times. Here we introduce a new active matter epidemic model, the "susceptible-cleric-zombie-recovered" (SCZR) model, in which spontaneous recovery is absent but zombies can recover with probability γ via interaction with a cleric. Upon colliding with a zombie, both susceptibles and clerics enter the zombie state with probability β and α, respectively. By changing the initial fraction of clerics or their healing ability rate γ, we can tune the SCZR model between SI dynamics, in which no susceptibles or clerics remain at long times, and SIR dynamics, in which a finite number of clerics and susceptibles survive at long times. The model is relevant to certain real world diseases such as HIV where spontaneous recovery is impossible but where medical interventions by a limited number of caregivers can reduce or eliminate the spread of infection.

Pattern formation and flocking for particles near the jamming transition on resource gradient substrates

We numerically examine a bidisperse system of active and passive particles coupled to a resource substrate. The active particles deplete the resource at a fixed rate and move toward regions with higher resources, while all of the particles interact sterically with each other. We show that at high densities, this system exhibits a rich variety of pattern-forming phases along with directed motion or flocking as a function of the relative rates of resource absorption and consumption as well as the active to passive particle ratio. These include partial phase separation into rivers of active particles flowing through passive clusters, strongly phase separated states where the active particles induce crystallization of the passive particles, mixed jammed states, and fluctuating mixed fluid phases. For higher resource recovery rates, we demonstrate that the active particles can undergo motility-induced phase separation, while at high densities, there can be a coherent flock containing only active particles or a solid mixture of active and passive particles. The directed flocking motion typically shows a transient in which the flow switches among different directions before settling into one direction, and there is a critical density below which flocking does not occur. We map out the different phases as function of system density, resource absorption and recovery rates, and the ratio of active to passive particles.

Magnus induced diode effect for skyrmions in channels with periodic potentials

Using a particle based model, we investigate the skyrmion dynamical behavior in a channel where the upper wall contains divots of one depth and the lower wall contains divots of a different depth. Under an applied driving force, skyrmions in the channels move with a finite skyrmion Hall angle that deflects them toward the upper wall for -xdirection driving and the lower wall for +xdirection driving. When the upper divots have zero height, the skyrmions are deflected against the flat upper wall for -xdirection driving and the skyrmion velocity depends linearly on the drive. For +xdirection driving, the skyrmions are pushed against the lower divots and become trapped, giving reduced velocities and a nonlinear velocity-force response. When there are shallow divots on the upper wall and deep divots on the lower wall, skyrmions get trapped for both driving directions; however, due to the divot depth difference, skyrmions move more easily under -xdirection driving, and become strongly trapped for +xdirection driving. The preferred -xdirection motion produces what we call a Magnus diode effect since it vanishes in the limit of zero Magnus force, unlike the diode effects observed for asymmetric sawtooth potentials. We show that the transport curves can exhibit a series of jumps or dips, negative differential conductivity, and reentrant pinning due to collective trapping events. We also discuss how our results relate to recent continuum modeling on a similar skyrmion diode system.

Superlubric-pinned transition of a two-dimensional solid dusty plasma under a periodic triangular substrate

The superlubric-pinned transition in the depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma modulated by 2D triangular periodic substrates is investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. When the lattice structure of the 2D solid dusty plasma perfectly matches the triangular substrate, two distinctive pinned and moving ordered states are observed as the external uniform driving force gradually increases from zero. When there is a mismatch between the lattice structure and the triangular substrate, however, on shallow substrates, it is discovered that all of the particles can slide freely on the substrate even when the applied driving force is tiny. This is a typical example of superlubricity, which is caused by the competition between the substrate-particle and particle-particle interactions. If the substrate depth increases further, as the driving force increases from zero, there are three dynamical states consisting of the pinned state, the disordered plastic flow state, and the moving ordered state. In an underdense system, where there are fewer particles than potential well minima, it is found that the occurrence of the three different dynamical states is controlled by the depth of the substrate, which is quantitatively characterized using the average mobility.

Directional locking in a two-dimensional Yukawa solid modulated by a two-dimensional periodic substrate

Directional depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) dusty plasma solid modulated by a 2D square periodic substrate are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. We observe prominent directional locking effects when the direction of the external driving force is varied relative to the underlying square substrate. These locking steps appear when the direction of the driving force is close to the symmetry direction of the substrate, corresponding to the different dynamical flow patterns and the structures. In the conditions between the adjacent locking steps, moving ordered states are observed. Although the discontinuous transitions often occur between the locking steps and the nonlocking portion, the continuous transitions are also found around the locking step associated with the disordered plastic flow close to its termini. Our results show that directional locking also occurs for underdamped systems, which could be tested experimentally in dusty plasmas modulated by 2D substrates.

Reversible to Irreversible Transitions for Cyclically Driven Particles on Periodic Obstacle Arrays

We examine the collective dynamics of disks moving through a square array of obstacles under cyclic square wave driving. Below a critical density we find that system organizes into a reversible state in which the disks return to the same positions at the end of every drive cycle. Above this density, the dynamics are irreversible and the disks do not return to the same positions after each cycle. The critical density depends strongly on the angle θ between the driving direction and a symmetry axis of the obstacle array, with the highest critical densities appearing at commensurate angles such as θ=0{degree sign} and θ=45{degree sign} and the lowest critical densities falling at θ=arctan(0.618), the inverse of the golden ratio, where the flow is the most frustrated. As the density increases, the number of cycles required to reach a reversible state grows as a power law with an exponent near ν=1.36, similar to what is found in periodically driven colloidal and superconducting vortex systems.

Phonon spectra of a two-dimensional solid dusty plasma modified by two-dimensional periodic substrates

Phonon spectra of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma modulated by 2D square and triangular periodic substrates are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. The commensurability ratio, i.e., the ratio of the number of particles to the number of potential well minima, is set to 1 or 2. The resulting phonon spectra show that propagation of waves is always suppressed due to the confinement of particles by the applied 2D periodic substrates. For a commensurability ratio of 1, the spectra indicate that all particles mainly oscillate at one specific frequency, corresponding to the harmonic oscillation frequency of one single particle inside one potential well. At a commensurability ratio of 2, the substrate allows two particles to sit inside the bottom of each potential well, and the resulting longitudinal and transverse spectra exhibit four branches in total. We find that the two moderate branches come from the harmonic oscillations of one single particle and two combined particles in the potential well. The other two branches correspond to the relative motion of the two-body structure in each potential well in the radial and azimuthal directions. The difference in the spectra between the square and triangular substrates is attributed to the anisotropy of the substrates and the resulting alignment directions of the two-body structure in each potential well.

Active matter shepherding and clustering in inhomogeneous environments

We consider a mixture of active and passive run-and-tumble disks in an inhomogeneous environment where only half of the sample contains quenched disorder or pinning. The disks are initialized in a fully mixed state of uniform density. We identify several distinct dynamical phases as a function of motor force and pinning density. At high pinning densities and high motor forces, there is a two-step process initiated by a rapid accumulation of both active and passive disks in the pinned region, which produces a large density gradient in the system. This is followed by a slower species phase separation process where the inactive disks are shepherded by the active disks into the pin-free region, forming a nonclustered fluid and producing a more uniform density with species phase separation. For higher pinning densities and low motor forces, the dynamics becomes very slow and the system maintains a strong density gradient. For weaker pinning and large motor forces, a floating clustered state appears, and the time-averaged density of the system is uniform. We illustrate the appearance of these phases in a dynamic phase diagram.

Clogging, dynamics, and reentrant fluid for active matter on periodic substrates

We examine the collective states of run-and-tumble active matter disks driven over a periodic obstacle array. When the drive is applied along a symmetry direction of the array, we find a clog-free uniform liquid state for low activity, while at higher activity, the density becomes increasingly heterogeneous and an active clogged state emerges in which the mobility is strongly reduced. For driving along nonsymmetry or incommensurate directions, there are two different clogging behaviors consisting of a drive-dependent clogged state in the low activity thermal limit and a drive-independent clogged state at high activity. These regimes are separated by a uniform flowing liquid at intermediate activity. There is a critical activity level above which the thermal clogged state does not occur, as well as an optimal activity level that maximizes the disk mobility. Thermal clogged states are dependent on the driving direction while active clogged states are not. In the low activity regime, diluting the obstacles produces a monotonic increase in the mobility; however, for large activities, the mobility is more robust against obstacle dilution. We also examine the velocity-force curves for driving along nonsymmetry directions and find that they are linear when the activity is low or intermediate but become nonlinear at high activity and show behavior similar to that found for the plastic depinning of solids. At higher drives, the active clustering is lost. For low activity, we also find a reentrant fluid phase, where the system transitions from a high mobility fluid at low drives to a clogged state at higher drives and then back into another fluid phase at very high drives. We map the regions in which the thermally clogged, partially clogged, active uniform fluid, clustered fluid, active clogged, and directionally locked states occur as a function of disk density, drift force, and activity.

Visualizing the strongly reshaped skyrmion Hall effect in multilayer wire devices

Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin textures touted as next-generation computing elements. When subjected to lateral currents, skyrmions move at considerable speeds. Their topological charge results in an additional transverse deflection known as the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). While promising, their dynamic phenomenology with current, skyrmion size, geometric effects and disorder remain to be established. Here we report on the ensemble dynamics of individual skyrmions forming dense arrays in Pt/Co/MgO wires by examining over 20,000 instances of motion across currents and fields. The skyrmion speed reaches 24 m/s in the plastic flow regime and is surprisingly robust to positional and size variations. Meanwhile, the SkHE saturates at ∼22^∘, is substantially reshaped by the wire edge, and crucially increases weakly with skyrmion size. Particle model simulations suggest that the SkHE size dependence — contrary to analytical predictions — arises from the interplay of intrinsic and pinning-driven effects. These results establish a robust framework to harness SkHE and achieve high-throughput skyrmion motion in wire devices.

Here, Tan et al. examine over 20,000 instances of current induced skyrmion motion to unveil a comprehensive picture of skyrmion dynamics across currents and fields.

Directional locking and the influence of obstacle density on skyrmion dynamics in triangular and honeycomb arrays

We numerically examine the dynamics of a single skyrmion driven over triangular and honeycomb obstacle arrays at zero temperature. The skyrmion Hall angleθ_sk, defined as the angle between the applied external drive and the direction of the skyrmion motion, increases in quantized steps or continuously as a function of the applied drive. For the obstacle arrays studied in this work, the skyrmion exhibits two main directional locking angles ofθ_sk= -30° and -60°. We show that these directions are privileged due to the obstacle landscape symmetry, and coincide with channels along which the skyrmion may move with few or no obstacle collisions. Here we investigate how changes in the obstacle density can modify the skyrmion Hall angles and cause some dynamic phases to appear or grow while other phases vanish. This interesting behavior can be used to guide skyrmions along designated trajectories via regions with different obstacle densities. For fixed obstacle densities, we investigate the evolution of the lockedθ_sk= -30° and -60° phases as a function of the Magnus force, and discuss possibilities for switching between these phases using topological selection.

Directional clogging and phase separation for disk flow through periodic and diluted obstacle arrays

We model collective disk flow though a square array of obstacles as the flow direction is changed relative to the symmetry directions of the array. At lower disk densities there is no clogging for any driving direction, but as the disk density increases, the average disk velocity decreases and develops a drive angle dependence. For certain driving angles, the flow is reduced or drops to zero when the system forms a heterogeneous clogged state consisting of high density clogged regions coexisting with empty regions. The clogged states are fragile and can be unclogged by changing the driving angle. For large obstacle sizes, we find a uniform clogged state that is distinct from the collective clogging regime. Within the clogged phases, depinning transitions can occur as a function of increasing driving force, with intermittent motion appearing just above the depinning threshold. The clogging is robust against the random removal or dilution of the obstacle sites, and the disks are able to form system-spanning clogged clusters even under increasing dilution. If the dilution becomes too large, however, the clogging behavior is lost.

Active matter commensuration and frustration effects on periodic substrates

We show that self-driven particles coupled to a periodic obstacle array exhibit active matter commensuration effects that are absent in the Brownian limit. As the obstacle size is varied for sufficiently large activity, a series of commensuration effects appear in which the motility induced phase separation produces commensurate crystalline states, while for other obstacle sizes we find frustrated or amorphous states. The commensuration effects are associated with peaks in the amount of sixfold ordering and the maximum cluster size. When a drift force is added to the system, the mobility contains peaks and dips similar to those found in transport studies for commensuration effects in superconducting vortices and colloidal particles.

Continuous and discontinuous transitions in the depinning of two-dimensional dusty plasmas on a one-dimensional periodic substrate

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to study the depinning dynamics of two-dimensional dusty plasmas on a one-dimensional periodic substrate. From the diagnostics of the sixfold coordinated particles P_{6} and the collective drift velocity V_{x}, three different states appear, which are the pinning, disordered plastic flow, and moving ordered states. It is found that the depth of the substrate is able to modulate the properties of the depinning phase transition, based on the results of P_{6} and V_{x}, as well as the observation of hysteresis of V_{x} while increasing and decreasing the driving force monotonically. When the depth of the substrate is shallow, there are two continuous phase transitions. When the potential well depth slightly increases, the phase transition from the pinned to the disordered plastic flow states is continuous; however, the phase transition from the disordered plastic flow to the moving ordered states is discontinuous. When the substrate is even deeper, the phase transition from the pinned to the disordered plastic flow states changes to discontinuous. When the depth of the substrate further increases, as the driving force increases, the pinned state changes to the moving ordered state directly, so that the disordered plastic flow state disappears completely.

Directional locking effects for active matter particles coupled to a periodic substrate

Directional locking occurs when a particle moving over a periodic substrate becomes constrained to travel along certain substrate symmetry directions. Such locking effects arise for colloids and superconducting vortices moving over ordered substrates when the direction of the external drive is varied. Here we study the directional locking of run-and-tumble active matter particles interacting with a periodic array of obstacles. In the absence of an external biasing force, we find that the active particle motion locks to various symmetry directions of the substrate when the run time between tumbles is large. The number of possible locking directions depends on the array density and on the relative sizes of the particles and the obstacles. For a square array of large obstacles, the active particle only locks to the x, y, and 45^{∘} directions, while for smaller obstacles, the number of locking angles increases. Each locking angle satisfies θ=arctan(p/q), where p and q are integers, and the angle of motion can be measured using the ratio of the velocities or the velocity distributions in the x and y directions. When a biasing driving force is applied, the directional locking behavior is affected by the ratio of the self-propulsion force to the biasing force. For large biasing, the behavior resembles that found for directional locking in passive systems. For large obstacles under biased driving, a trapping behavior occurs that is nonmonotonic as a function of increasing run length or increasing self-propulsion force, and the trapping diminishes when the run length is sufficiently large.

Collective effects and pattern formation for directional locking of disks moving through obstacle arrays

We examine directional locking effects in an assembly of disks driven through a square array of obstacles as the angle of drive rotates from 0^{∘} to 90^{∘}. For increasing disk densities, the system exhibits a series of different dynamic patterns along certain locking directions, including one-dimensional or multiple-row chain phases and density-modulated phases. For nonlocking driving directions, the disks form disordered patterns or clusters. When the obstacles are small or far apart, a large number of locking phases appear; however, as the number of disks increases, the number of possible locking phases drops due to the increasing frequency of collisions between the disks and obstacles. For dense arrays or large obstacles, we find an increased clogging effect in which immobile and moving disks coexist.

Jamming, fragility and pinning phenomena in superconducting vortex systems

We examine driven superconducting vortices interacting with quenched disorder under a sequence of perpendicular drive pulses. As a function of disorder strength, we find four types of behavior distinguished by the presence or absence of memory effects. The fragile and jammed states exhibit memory, while the elastic and pinning dominated regimes do not. In the fragile regime, the system organizes into a pinned state during the first pulse, flows during the second perpendicular pulse, and then returns to a pinned state during the third pulse which is parallel to the first pulse. This behavior is the hallmark of the fragility proposed for jamming in particulate matter. For stronger disorder, we observe a robust jamming state with memory where the system reaches a pinned or reduced flow state during the perpendicular drive pulse, similar to the shear jamming of granular systems. We show signatures of the different states in the spatial vortex configurations, and find that memory effects arise from coexisting elastic and pinned components of the vortex assembly. The sequential perpendicular driving protocol we propose for distinguishing fragile, jammed, and pinned phases should be general to the broader class of driven interacting particles in the presence of quenched disorder.

Dynamics of Magnus-dominated particle clusters, collisions, pinning, and ratchets

Motivated by the recent work in skyrmions and active chiral matter systems, we examine pairs and small clusters of repulsively interacting point particles in the limit where the dynamics is dominated by the Magnus force. We find that particles with the same Magnus force can form stable pairs, triples, and higher ordered clusters or exhibit chaotic motion. For mixtures of particles with opposite Magnus force, particle pairs can combine to form translating dipoles. Under an applied drive, particles with the same Magnus force translate; however, particles with different or opposite Magnus force exhibit a drive-dependent decoupling transition. When the particles interact with a repulsive obstacle, they can form localized orbits with depinning or unwinding transitions under an applied drive. We examine the interaction of these particles with clusters or lines of obstacles and find that the particles can become trapped in orbits that encircle multiple obstacles. Under an ac drive, we observe a series of ratchet effects, including ratchet reversals, for particles interacting with a line of obstacles due to the formation of commensurate orbits. Finally, in assemblies of particles with mixed Magnus forces of the same sign, we find that the particles with the largest Magnus force become localized in the center of the cluster, while for mixtures with opposite Magnus forces, the motion is dominated by transient local pairs or clusters, where the translating pairs can be regarded as a form of active matter.

Colloidal Dynamics on a Choreographic Time Crystal

A choreographic time crystal is a dynamic lattice structure in which the points comprising the lattice move in a coordinated fashion. These structures were initially proposed for understanding the motion of synchronized satellite swarms. Using simulations, we examine colloids interacting with a choreographic crystal consisting of traps that could be created optically. As a function of the trap strength, speed, and colloidal filling fraction, we identify a series of phases including states where the colloids organize into a dynamic chiral loop lattice as well as a frustrated induced liquid state and a choreographic lattice state. We show that transitions between these states can be understood in terms of vertex frustration effects that occur during a certain portion of the choreographic cycle. Our results can be generalized to a broader class of systems of particles coupled to choreographic structures, such as vortices, ions, cold atoms, and soft matter systems.

Commensurate states and pattern switching via liquid crystal skyrmions trapped in a square lattice

Using continuum based simulations we show that a rich variety of skyrmion liquid crystal states can be realized in the presence of a periodic obstacle array. As a function of the number of skyrmions per obstacle we find hexagonal, square, dimer, trimer and quadrimer ordering, where the n-mer structures are a realization of a molecular crystal state of skyrmions. As a function of external field and obstacle radius we show that there are transitions between the different crystalline states as well as mixed and disordered structures. We discuss how these states are related to commensurate effects seen in other systems, such as vortices in type-II superconductors and colloids interacting with two dimensional substrates.

Detecting depinning and nonequilibrium transitions with unsupervised machine learning

Using numerical simulations of a model disk system, we demonstrate that a machine learning generated order-parameter-like measure can detect depinning transitions and different dynamic flow phases in systems driven far from equilibrium. We specifically consider monodisperse passive disks with short range interactions undergoing a depinning phase transition when driven over quenched disorder. The machine learning derived order-parameter-like measure identifies the depinning transition as well as different dynamical regimes, such as the transition from a flowing liquid to a phase separated liquid-solid state that is not readily distinguished with traditional measures such as velocity-force curves or Voronoi tessellation. The order-parameter-like measure also shows markedly distinct behavior in the limit of high density where jamming effects occur. Our results should be general to the broad class of particle-based systems that exhibit depinning transitions and nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Plastic flow and the skyrmion Hall effect

Skyrmions in chiral magnets are a particle-like texture that has been attracting growing interest due to their novel dynamics and possible applications. Here, we discuss the role of disorder and skyrmion-skyrmion interaction in governing their motion under an external drive.

Depinning dynamics of two-dimensional dusty plasmas on a one-dimensional periodic substrate

We investigate the depinning dynamics of two-dimensional dusty plasmas driven over one-dimensional periodic substrates using Langevin dynamical simulations. We find that, for a specific range of substrate strengths, as the external driving force increases from zero, there are three different states, which are the pinned, the disordered plastic flow, and the moving ordered states, respectively. These three states are clearly observed using different diagnostics, including the collective drift velocity, static structural measures, the particle trajectories, the mean-squared displacements, and the kinetic temperature. We compare the observed depinning dynamics here with the depinning dynamics in other systems.

Active microrheology, Hall effect, and jamming in chiral fluids

We examine the motion of a probe particle driven through a chiral fluid composed of circularly swimming disks. We find that the probe particle travels in both the longitudinal direction, parallel to the driving force, and in the transverse direction, perpendicular to the driving force, giving rise to a Hall angle. Under constant driving force, we show that the probe particle velocity in both the longitudinal and transverse directions exhibits nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the activity of the circle swimmers. The Hall angle is maximized when a resonance occurs between the frequency of the chiral disks and the motion of the probe particle. As the density of the chiral fluid increases, the Hall angle gradually decreases before reaching zero when the system enters a jammed state. We show that the onset of jamming depends on the chiral particle swimming frequency, with a fluid state appearing at low frequencies and a jammed solid occurring at high frequencies.

Dynamic phases, stratification, laning, and pattern formation for driven bidisperse disk systems in the presence of quenched disorder

Using numerical simulations, we examine the dynamics of driven two-dimensional bidisperse disks flowing over quenched disorder. The system exhibits a series of distinct dynamical phases as a function of applied driving force and packing fraction, including a phase-separated state as well as a smectic state with liquid-like or polycrystalline features. At low driving forces, we find a clogged phase with an isotropic density distribution, while at intermediate driving forces the disks separate into bands of high and low densities with either liquid-like or polycrystalline structure in the high-density bands. In addition to the density phase separation, we find that in some cases there is a fractionation of the disk species, particularly when the disk size ratio is large. The species phase-separated regimes form a variety of patterns such as large disks separated by chains of smaller disks. Our results show that the formation of laning states can be enhanced by tuning the ratio of disk radius of the two species, due to the clumping of small disks in the interstitial regions between the large disks. This system could be experimentally realized using sterically interacting colloidal particles suspended in a viscous fluid driven over random pinning arrays or granular matter suspended in fluid moving over a random landscape.

Thermal creep and the skyrmion Hall angle in driven skyrmion crystals

We numerically examine thermal effects on the skyrmion Hall angle for driven skyrmions interacting with quenched disorder. We identify a creep regime in which motion occurs via intermittent jumps between pinned and flowing states. Here the skyrmion Hall angle is zero since the skyrmions have time to relax into equilibrium positions in the pinning sites, eliminating the side-jump motion induced by the Magnus force. At higher drives we find a crossover to a viscous flow regime where the skyrmion Hall angle is finite and increases with increasing drive or temperature. Our results are in agreement with recent experiments which also show a regime of finite skyrmion velocity with zero skyrmion Hall angle crossing over to a viscous flow regime with a skyrmion Hall angle that increases with drive.

Disordering, clustering, and laning transitions in particle systems with dispersion in the Magnus term

We numerically examine a two-dimensional system of repulsively interacting particles with dynamics that are governed by both a damping term and a Magnus term. The magnitude of the Magnus term has one value for half of the particles and a different value for the other half of the particles. In the absence of a driving force, the particles form a triangular lattice, while when a driving force is applied, we find that there is a critical drive above which a Magnus-induced disordering transition can occur even if the difference in the Magnus term between the two particle species is as small as one percent. The transition arises due to the different Hall angles of the two species, which causes their motion to decouple at the critical drive. At higher drives, the disordered state can undergo both species and density phase separation into a density-modulated stripe that is oriented perpendicular to the driving direction. We observe several additional phases that occur as a function of drive and Magnus force disparity, including a variety of density-modulated diagonal-laned phases. In general, we find a much richer variety of states compared to systems of oppositely driven overdamped Yukawa particles. We discuss the implications of our work for skyrmion systems, where we predict that even for small skyrmion dispersities, a drive-induced disordering transition can occur along with clustering phases and pattern-forming states.

Skyrmion Lattice Topological Hall Effect near Room Temperature

Magnetic skyrmions are stable nanosized spin structures that can be displaced at low electrical current densities. Because of these properties, they have been proposed as building blocks of future electronic devices with unprecedentedly high information density and low energy consumption. The electrical detection of an ordered skyrmion lattice via the Topological Hall Effect (THE) in a bulk crystal, has so far been demonstrated only at cryogenic temperatures in the MnSi family of compounds. Here, we report the observation of a skyrmion lattice Topological Hall Effect near room temperature (276 K) in a mesoscopic lamella carved from a bulk crystal of FeGe. This region coincides with the skyrmion lattice location revealed by neutron scattering. We provide clear evidence of a re-entrant helicoid magnetic phase adjacent to the skyrmion phase, and discuss the large THE amplitude (5 nΩ.cm) in view of the ordinary Hall Effect.

Ice rule fragility via topological charge transfer in artificial colloidal ice

Artificial particle ices are model systems of constrained, interacting particles. They have been introduced theoretically to study ice-manifolds emergent from frustration, along with domain wall and grain boundary dynamics, doping, pinning-depinning, controlled transport of topological defects, avalanches, and memory effects. Recently such particle-based ices have been experimentally realized with vortices in nano-patterned superconductors or gravitationally trapped colloids. Here we demonstrate that, although these ices are generally considered equivalent to magnetic spin ices, they can access a novel spectrum of phenomenologies that are inaccessible to the latter. With experiments, theory and simulations we demonstrate that in mixed coordination geometries, entropy-driven negative monopoles spontaneously appear at a density determined by the vertex-mixture ratio. Unlike its spin-based analogue, the colloidal system displays a "fragile ice" manifold, where local energetics oppose the ice rule, which is instead enforced through conservation of the global topological charge. The fragile colloidal ice, stabilized by topology, can be spontaneously broken by topological charge transfer.

Controlled Fluidization, Mobility, and Clogging in Obstacle Arrays Using Periodic Perturbations

We show that the clogging susceptibility and flow of particles moving through a random obstacle array can be controlled with a transverse or longitudinal ac drive. The flow rate can vary over several orders of magnitude, and we find both an optimal frequency and an optimal amplitude of driving that maximizes the flow. For dense arrays, at low ac frequencies, a heterogeneous creeping clogged phase appears in which rearrangements between different clogged configurations occur. At intermediate frequencies, a high-mobility fluidized state forms, and, at high frequencies, the system reenters a heterogeneous frozen clogged state. These results provide a technique for optimizing flow through heterogeneous media that could also serve as the basis for a particle separation method.

Laning and clustering transitions in driven binary active matter systems

It is well known that a binary system of nonactive disks that experience driving in opposite directions exhibits jammed, phase separated, disordered, and laning states. In active matter systems, such as a crowd of pedestrians, driving in opposite directions is common and relevant, especially in conditions which are characterized by high pedestrian density and emergency. In such cases, the transition from laning to disordered states may be associated with the onset of a panic state. We simulate a laning system containing active disks that obey run-and-tumble dynamics, and we measure the drift mobility and structure as a function of run length, disk density, and drift force. The activity of each disk can be quantified based on the correlation timescale of the velocity vector. We find that in some cases, increasing the activity can increase the system mobility by breaking up jammed configurations; however, an activity level that is too high can reduce the mobility by increasing the probability of disk-disk collisions. In the laning state, the increase of activity induces a sharp transition to a disordered strongly fluctuating state with reduced mobility. We identify a novel drive-induced clustered laning state that remains stable even at densities below the activity-induced clustering transition of the undriven system. We map out the dynamic phase diagrams highlighting transitions between the different phases as a function of activity, drive, and density.

Crossover from Jamming to Clogging Behaviours in Heterogeneous Environments

Jamming describes a transition from a flowing or liquid state to a solid or rigid state in a loose assembly of particles such as grains or bubbles. In contrast, clogging describes the ceasing of the flow of particulate matter through a bottleneck. It is not clear how to distinguish jamming from clogging, nor is it known whether they are distinct phenomena or fundamentally the same. We examine an assembly of disks moving through a random obstacle array and identify a transition from clogging to jamming behavior as the disk density increases. The clogging transition has characteristics of an absorbing phase transition, with the disks evolving into a heterogeneous phase-separated clogged state after a critical diverging transient time. In contrast, jamming is a rapid process in which the disks form a homogeneous motionless packing, with a rigidity length scale that diverges as the jamming density is approached.

Clogging and transport of driven particles in asymmetric funnel arrays

We numerically examine the flow and clogging of particles driven through asymmetric funnel arrays when the commensurability ratio of the number of particles per plaquette is varied. The particle-particle interactions are modeled with a soft repulsive potential that could represent vortex flow in type-II superconductors or driven charged colloids. The velocity-force curves for driving in the easy flow direction of the funnels exhibit a single depinning threshold; however, for driving in the hard flow direction, we find that there can be both negative mobility where the velocity decreases with increasing driving force as well as a reentrant pinning effect in which the particles flow at low drives but become pinned at intermediate drives. This reentrant pinning is associated with a transition from smooth 1D flow at low drives to a clogged state at higher drives that occurs when the particles cluster in a small number of plaquettes and block the flow. When the drive is further increased, particle rearrangements occur that cause the clog to break apart. We map out the regimes in which the pinned, flowing, and clogged states appear as a function of plaquette filling and drive. The clogged states remain robust at finite temperatures but develop intermittent bursts of flow in which a clog temporarily breaks apart but quickly reforms.

Clogging and depinning of ballistic active matter systems in disordered media

We numerically examine ballistic active disks driven through a random obstacle array. Formation of a pinned or clogged state occurs at much lower obstacle densities for the active disks than for passive disks. As a function of obstacle density, we identify several distinct phases including a depinned fluctuating cluster state, a pinned single-cluster or jammed state, a pinned multicluster state, a pinned gel state, and a pinned disordered state. At lower active disk densities, a drifting uniform liquid forms in the absence of obstacles, but when even a small number of obstacles are introduced, the disks organize into a pinned phase-separated cluster state in which clusters nucleate around the obstacles, similar to a wetting phenomenon. We examine how the depinning threshold changes as a function of disk or obstacle density and find a crossover from a collectively pinned cluster state to a disordered plastic depinning transition as a function of increasing obstacle density. We compare this to the behavior of nonballistic active particles and show that as we vary the activity from completely passive to completely ballistic, a clogged phase-separated state appears in both the active and passive limits, while for intermediate activity, a readily flowing liquid state appears and there is an optimal activity level that maximizes the flux through the sample.

Avalanches and Criticality in Driven Magnetic Skyrmions

We show using numerical simulations that slowly driven Skyrmions interacting with random pinning move via correlated jumps or avalanches. The avalanches exhibit power-law distributions in their duration and size, and the average avalanche shape for different avalanche durations can be scaled to a universal function, in agreement with theoretical predictions for systems in a nonequilibrium critical state. A distinctive feature of Skyrmions is the influence of the nondissipative Magnus term. When we increase the ratio of the Magnus term to the damping term, a change in the universality class of the behavior occurs, the average avalanche shape becomes increasingly asymmetric, and individual avalanches exhibit motion in the direction perpendicular to their own density gradient.

Velocity force curves, laning, and jamming for oppositely driven disk systems

Using simulations we examine a two-dimensional disk system in which two disk species are driven in opposite directions. We measure the average velocity of one of the species versus the applied driving force and identify four phases as function of drive and disk density: a jammed state, a completely phase separated state, a continuously mixing phase, and a laning phase. The transitions between these phases are correlated with jumps in the velocity-force curves that are similar to the behavior observed at dynamical phase transitions in driven particle systems with quenched disorder such as vortices in type-II superconductors. In some cases the transitions between phases are associated with negative differential mobility in which the average absolute velocity of either species decreases with increasing drive. We also consider the situation where the drive is applied to only one species as well as systems in which both species are driven in the same direction with different drive amplitudes. We show that the phases are robust against the addition of thermal fluctuations. Finally, we discuss how the transitions we observe could be related to absorbing phase transitions where a system in a phase separated or laning regime organizes to a state in which contacts between the disks no longer occur and dynamical fluctuations are lost.

Inner Phases of Colloidal Hexagonal Spin Ice

Using numerical simulations that mimic recent experiments on hexagonal colloidal ice, we show that colloidal hexagonal artificial spin ice exhibits an inner phase within its ice state that has not been observed previously. Under increasing colloid-colloid repulsion, the initially paramagnetic system crosses into a disordered ice regime, then forms a topologically charge ordered state with disordered colloids, and finally reaches a threefold degenerate, ordered ferromagnetic state. This is reminiscent of, yet distinct from, the inner phases of the magnetic kagome spin ice analog. The difference in the inner phases of the two systems is explained by their difference in energetics and frustration.

Negative differential mobility and trapping in active matter systems

Using simulations, we examine the average velocity as a function of applied drift force for active matter particles moving through a random obstacle array. We find that for low drift force, there is an initial flow regime where the mobility increases linearly with drive, while for higher drift forces a regime of negative differential mobility appears in which the velocity decreases with increasing drive due to the trapping of active particles behind obstacles. A fully clogged regime exists at very high drift forces when all the particles are permanently trapped behind obstacles. We find for increasing activity that the overall mobility is nonmonotonic, with an enhancement of the mobility for small levels of activity and a decrease in mobility for large activity levels. We show how these effects evolve as a function of disk and obstacle density, active run length, drift force, and motor force.

Dewetting and spreading transitions for active matter on random pinning substrates

We show that sterically interacting self-propelled disks in the presence of random pinning substrates exhibit transitions among a variety of different states. In particular, from a phase separated cluster state, the disks can spread out and homogeneously cover the substrate in what can be viewed as an example of an active matter wetting transition. We map the location of this transition as a function of activity, disk density, and substrate strength, and we also identify other phases including a cluster state, coexistence between a cluster and a labyrinth wetted phase, and a pinned liquid. Convenient measures of these phases include the cluster size, which dips at the wetting-dewetting transition, and the fraction of sixfold coordinated particles, which drops when dewetting occurs.

Dynamic phases, clustering, and chain formation for driven disk systems in the presence of quenched disorder

We numerically examine the dynamic phases and pattern formation of two-dimensional monodisperse repulsive disks driven over random quenched disorder. We show that there is a series of distinct dynamic regimes as a function of increasing drive, including a clogged or pile-up phase near depinning, a homogeneous disordered flow state, and a dynamically phase separated regime consisting of high-density crystalline regions surrounded by a low density of disordered disks. At the highest drives the disks arrange into one-dimensional moving chains. The phase separated regime has parallels with the phase separation observed in active matter systems, but arises from a distinct mechanism consisting of the combination of nonequilibrium fluctuations with density-dependent mobility. We discuss the pronounced differences between this system and previous studies of driven particles with longer-range repulsive interactions moving over random substrates, such as superconducting vortices or electron crystals, where dynamical phase separation and distinct one-dimensional moving chains are not observed. Our results should be generic to a broad class of systems in which the particle-particle interactions are short ranged, such as sterically interacting colloids or Yukawa particles with strong screening driven over random pinning arrays, superconducting vortices in the limit of small penetration depths, or quasi-two-dimensional granular matter flowing over rough landscapes.
