Unveiling the structural phase transition and magnetic structure of ternary boride PrIr3B2

We present a comprehensive study of PrIr3B2, which includes a detailed investigation of its crystal and magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. AC and DC magnetization and heat capacity data reveal antiferromagnetic ordering atTN= 10 K. The heat capacity measurements further exhibit a broad peak near 270 K which is related to a structural transition fromP6/mmmtoC2/mseen in low temperature x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. High intensity neutron diffraction data confirm the long-range ordering of Pr3+spins, with no apparent magnetic moment on either of the Iridium sites. Two possible magnetic structures with eitherk1= [1,0,0] ork2= [½,½,0] fit nearly equally well the neutron diffraction data. However, based on previous magnetization studies on a single crystalline sample it is argued that the second solution withk2corresponds to the appropriate magnetic structure of PrIr3B2below 10 K. In this magnetic structure, the Pr3+moments are oriented at ∼45° to both theaandbaxes, with thec-axis being the hard axis of magnetization. Overall, our results provide new insights into the magnetic and structural properties of PrIr3B2.

Observation of an exotic insulator to insulator transition upon electron doping the Mott insulator CeMnAsO

A promising route to discover exotic electronic states in correlated electron systems is to vary the hole or electron doping away from a Mott insulating state. Important examples include quantum criticality and high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Here, we report the surprising discovery of a quantum insulating state upon electron doping the Mott insulator CeMnAsO, which emerges below a distinct critical transition temperature, TII. The insulator-insulator transition is accompanied by a significant reduction in electron mobility as well as a colossal Seebeck effect and slow dynamics due to decoupling of the electrons from the lattice phonons. The origin of the transition is tentatively interpreted in terms of many-body localization, which has not been observed previously in a solid-state material.

Invited review: Qualitative research in dairy science-A narrative review

The use of qualitative research in dairy science has increased considerably in recent years, providing the opportunity to inform research and practice. This review aims to enhance the accessibility of qualitative research among a range of audiences and specifically: (1) provide an overview of what qualitative research is and the value it can bring to scientific inquiries in the dairy context, (2) illustrate the emergence of qualitative dairy science research in the past 15 to 20 years, (3) outline the role of the researcher and key philosophical assumptions underlying qualitative research, (4) describe qualitative research approaches and methods used in dairy science research, and (5) highlight key aspects of qualitative inquiry used to ensure research trustworthiness. Qualitative approaches in dairy science enable researchers to understand myriad topics including stakeholder relationships, decision-making, and behaviors regarding dairy cattle management, animal welfare, and disease prevention and control measures. Approaches that were used often for qualitative data collection were individual interviews and focus groups, and variations of thematic analysis were common analytical frameworks. To assess public values, attitudes, and perceptions, mixed methods questionnaires that combined quantitative data with qualitative data from open-ended questions were used regularly. Although still used infrequently, action research and participatory approaches have the potential to bridge the research-implementation gap by facilitating group-based learning and on-farm changes. Some publications described the philosophical assumptions inherent to qualitative research, and many authors included reflexivity and positionality statements. Although a comprehensive description of strategies to meet trustworthiness criteria for qualitative research was uncommon, many publications mentioned certain aspects of trustworthiness, such as member checking, researcher triangulation, and the recording of reflexive notes. Qualitative research has been used to deepen our understanding of phenomena relevant to the dairy sector and has opened the door for a broad array of new opportunities. In addition to having merit on its own, qualitative research can guide, inform, and expand on quantitative research, and an understanding of the core pillars of qualitative research can foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

CaFeFeNbO6 - an iron-based double double perovskite

Ordering of cations is important for controlling properties of ABO₃ perovskites, and CaFeFeNbO₆ is the first example of an Fe-based AA'BB'O₆ double double perovskite, with Ca²⁺/Fe²⁺ ordered on A-site columns, and Fe³⁺/Nb⁵⁺ at the octahedral B-sites. Substantial (37%) antisite disorder of the latter cations leads to spin glassy magnetism below a freezing transition at 12 K. The CaMnFeNbO₆ analogue also shows substantial cation disorder and spin glassy behaviour. Comparison of synthesis pressures for ordered materials based on different A-site transition metals, suggests that pressures of at least 14-18 GPa will be required to discover the expected plethora of double double perovskites based on A' cations smaller than Mn²⁺.

Experimental Evidence for the Spiral Spin Liquid in LiYbO_{2}

Spiral spin liquids are an exotic class of correlated paramagnets with an enigmatic magnetic ground state composed of a degenerate manifold of fluctuating spin spirals. Experimental realizations of the spiral spin liquid are scarce, mainly due to the prominence of structural distortions in candidate materials that can trigger order-by-disorder transitions to more conventionally ordered magnetic ground states. Expanding the pool of candidate materials that may host a spiral spin liquid is therefore crucial to realizing this novel magnetic ground state and understanding its robustness against perturbations that arise in real materials. Here, we show that the material LiYbO_{2} is the first experimental realization of a spiral spin liquid predicted to emerge from the J_{1}-J_{2} Heisenberg model on an elongated diamond lattice. Through a complementary combination of high-resolution and diffuse neutron magnetic scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample, we demonstrate that LiYbO_{2} fulfills the requirements for the experimental realization of the spiral spin liquid and reconstruct single-crystal diffuse neutron magnetic scattering maps that reveal continuous spiral spin contours-a characteristic experimental hallmark of this exotic magnetic phase.

Public attitude toward and perceptions of dairy cattle welfare in cow-calf management systems differing in type of social and maternal contact

Early cow-calf separation followed by individual housing of calves is standard practice on dairy farms. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that as awareness grows the public will oppose these practices, which could compromise the dairy industry's social license. Despite disagreement among different stakeholders over weighting and evaluations of effects of early separation (e.g., distress response, disease risk), recent systematic reviews indicate that there is little scientific evidence supporting this practice. The acceptability of alternative cow-calf management systems is unknown. We used a mixed methods survey with a convenience sample of 307 Canadians plus a representative sample of 1,487 Americans to investigate perceptions of these systems, examining the effects of providing social or foster cow contact following early separation or not separating cow-calf pairs. Attitudes and perceptions of animal welfare were more positive (on a 7-point scale where 1 is most negative, 7 is most positive, and 4 is a neutral midpoint) toward the system where calves were not separated from the cow (mean ± SE; 5.8 ± 0.07; 5.7 ± 0.07), compared with systems in which the calf was separated and individually housed (3.6 ± 0.07; 3.4 ± 0.07), separated and group housed (3.7 ± 0.07; 3.4 ± 0.07), or separated and kept with a foster cow (3.8 ± 0.07; 3.6 ± 0.07). Participants were consistent in their attitudes toward and perceptions of animal welfare within the system, suggesting that participants took a holistic and value-oriented approach to cow-calf management regarding separation. These results, in combination with many participants' concern for the importance of the mother cow-calf relationship and perceptions that severing of this bond was a breach of standard of care, suggest that there may be low acceptance of any cow-calf management system involving early separation as such systems are unlikely to resonate with underlying values.

Data fusion and smoothing for probabilistic tracking of viral structures in fluorescence microscopy images

Automatic tracking of viral structures displayed as small spots in fluorescence microscopy images is an important task to determine quantitative information about cellular processes. We introduce a novel probabilistic approach for tracking multiple particles based on multi-sensor data fusion and Bayesian smoothing methods. The approach exploits multiple measurements as in a particle filter, both detection-based measurements and prediction-based measurements from a Kalman filter using probabilistic data association with elliptical sampling. Compared to previous probabilistic tracking methods, our approach exploits separate uncertainties for the detection-based and prediction-based measurements, and integrates them by a sequential multi-sensor data fusion method. In addition, information from both past and future time points is taken into account by a Bayesian smoothing method in conjunction with the covariance intersection algorithm for data fusion. Also, motion information based on displacements is used to improve correspondence finding. Our approach has been evaluated on data of the Particle Tracking Challenge and yielded state-of-the-art results or outperformed previous approaches. We also applied our approach to challenging time-lapse fluorescence microscopy data of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and hepatitis C virus proteins acquired with different types of microscopes and spatial-temporal resolutions. It turned out, that our approach outperforms existing methods.

Investigation of the magnetic ground state of GaV4S8using powder neutron diffraction

The magnetic ground state of polycrystalline Néel skyrmion hosting material GaV₄S₈has been investigated usingacsusceptibility and powder neutron diffraction. In the absence of an applied magnetic field GaV₄S₈undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic to a cycloidal state below 13 K and then to a ferromagnetic-like state below 6 K. With evidence fromacsusceptibility and powder neutron diffraction, we have identified the commensurate magnetic structure at 1.5 K, with ordered magnetic moments of 0.23(2) μ_Bon the V1 sites and 0.22(1) μ_Bon the V2 sites. These moments have ferromagnetic-like alignment but with a 39(8)° canting of the magnetic moments on the V2 sites away from the V₄cluster. In the incommensurate magnetic phase that exists between 6 and 13 K, we provide a thorough and careful analysis of the cycloidal magnetic structure exhibited by this material using powder neutron diffraction.

Magnetic ground states of Ce3TiSb5, Pr3TiSb5and Nd3TiSb5determined by neutron powder diffraction and magnetic measurements

TheR₃TiSb₅ternary compounds, withRa light rare earth (La to Sm) have been reported to crystallize with the anti-Hf₅CuSn₃-type hexagonal structure (Pearson's symbolhP18; space-groupP6₃/mcm, N. 193). An early article that reported possible superconductivity in some of these intermetallic phases (namely those withR= La, Ce, and Nd) caught our attention. In this work, we have now refined the crystal structure of theR₃TiSb₅compounds withR= Ce, Pr and Nd by Rietveld methods using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data. The magnetic ground states of these intermetallics have been investigated by low-temperature magnetization and high-intensity neutron diffraction. We find two different magnetic transitions corresponding to two related magnetic structures atT_N1= 4.8 K (k₁= [0, 1/2, 1/8]) andT_N2= 3.4 K (k₂= [0, 0, 1/8]), respectively for Ce₃TiSb₅. However, the magnetic ordering appears to occur following a peculiar hysteresis: thek₂-type magnetic structure develops only after thek₁-type phase fraction has first slowly ordered with time and the size of the ordered Ce³⁺magnetic moment has become large enough to induce the second magnetic transition. AtT= 1.5 K the maximum amplitude of the Ce moment in the coexisting phases amounts toμ_Ce= 2.15 μ_B. For Nd₃TiSb₅an antiferromagnetic ordering belowT_N= 5.2 K into a relatively simpler commensurate magnetic structure with a magnetic moment ofμ_Nd= 2.14(3)μ_Band magnetic propagation vector ofk= [0, 0, 0], was determined. No evidence of superconductivity has been found in Nd₃TiSb₅. Finally, Pr₃TiSb₅does not show any ordering down to 1.5 K in neutron diffraction while an antiferromagnetic ground state is detected in magnetization measurements. There is no sign of magnetic contribution from Ti atoms found in any of the studied compounds.

Magnetic structure and crystal field excitations of NdOs2Al10: a neutron scattering study

We have investigated the magnetic properties of a polycrystalline sample of NdOs₂Al₁₀using neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal an antiferromagnetic transition atT_N1= 2.2 K while the heat capacity data which extend to lower temperatures show a further transition atT_N2= 1.1 K. The INS measurements detect four well-resolved crystal field excitations at 7.4, 12.4, 17.6 meV and 19.2 meV at 5 K. The positions and intensities of the observed CEF excitations and the temperature dependence of previously published single crystal susceptibility data are analysed based on the orthorhombic CEF model of theJ= 9/2 ground state multiplet of Nd³⁺ion. The neutron diffraction study reveals the magnetic structure atT= 1.6 K to be of sine wave type (κ= [0, 0.723, 0]) with an ordered state moment ofμ_Nd³⁺= 1.59(1)μ_Baligned along thea-axis in agreement with the single ion crystal field anisotropy. This indicates that the magnetism of NdOs₂Al₁₀is governed by the RKKY interactions in agreement with otherRT₂Al₁₀(R= Nd, Sm, Tb,T= Fe, Ru and Os), but different to that ofR= Ce based compounds where anisotropic two ions interaction as well as Kondo interaction govern the anomalous direction of the ordered state moment.

Octupolar versus Néel Order in Cubic 5d^{2} Double Perovskites

We report time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and neutron and x-ray diffraction studies of the 5d^{2} double perovskite magnets, Ba_{2}MOsO_{6} (M=Zn,Mg,Ca). These materials host antiferromagnetically coupled 5d^{2} Os^{6+} ions decorating a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice and are found to remain cubic down to the lowest temperatures. They all exhibit thermodynamic anomalies consistent with a single phase transition at a temperature T^{*}, and a gapped magnetic excitation spectrum with spectral weight concentrated at wave vectors typical of type-I antiferromagnetic orders. However, while muon spin resonance experiments show clear evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking below T^{*}, we observe no corresponding magnetic Bragg scattering signal. These results are shown to be consistent with ferro-octupolar symmetry breaking below T^{*}, and are discussed in the context of other 5d double perovskite magnets and theories of exotic orders driven by multipolar interactions.

Aerosol optical properties in the Arctic: The role of aerosol chemistry and dust composition in a closure experiment between Lidar and tethered balloon vertical profiles

A closure experiment was conducted over Svalbard by comparing Lidar measurements and optical aerosol properties calculated from aerosol vertical profiles measured using a tethered balloon. Arctic Haze was present together with Icelandic dust. Chemical analysis of filter samples, aerosol size distribution and a full set of meteorological parameters were determined at ground. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS) data were at disposal showing the presence of several mineralogical phases (i.e., sheet silicates, gypsum, quartz, rutile, hematite). The closure experiment was set up by calculating the backscattering coefficients from tethered balloon data and comparing them with the corresponding lidar profiles. This was preformed in three subsequent steps aimed at determining the importance of a complete aerosol speciation: (i) a simple, columnar refractive index was obtained by the closest Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) station, (ii) the role of water-soluble components, elemental carbon and organic matter (EC/OM) was addressed, (iii) the dust composition was included. When considering the AERONET data, or only the ionic water-soluble components and the EC/OM fraction, results showed an underestimation of the backscattering lidar signal up to 76, 53 and 45% (355, 532 and 1064 nm). Instead, when the dust contribution was included, the underestimation disappeared and the vertically-averaged, backscattering coefficients (1.45 ± 0.30, 0.69 ± 0.15 and 0.34 ± 0.08 Mm^-1 sr^-1, at 355, 532 and 1064 nm) were found in keeping with the lidar ones (1.60 ± 0.22, 0.75 ± 0.16 and 0.31 ± 0.08 Mm^-1 sr^-1). Final results were characterized by low RMSE (0.36, 0.08 and 0.04 Mm^-1 sr^-1) and a high linear correlation (R² of 0.992, 0.992 and 0.994) with slopes close to one (1.368, 0.931 and 0.977, respectively). This work highlighted the importance of all the aerosol components and of the synergy between single particle and bulk chemical analysis for the optical property characterization in the Arctic.

Structural and magnetic properties of the Yb2Pd2(In1-x Sn x ) system: a synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction investigation

The structural properties of the Yb₂Pd₂(In_1-x Sn _x ) system were investigated at room temperature by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. All the inspected compositions (x  =  0.0, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 0.9) crystallize in the tetragonal space group P4/mbm; the cell parameters exhibit a non-linear dependence on composition, whereas cell volume changes more regularly, with a minimum at x  =  0.8. Samples with Sn content x  =  0.5, 0.6, 0.9 were also analysed by neutron diffraction down to 0.5 K. No evidence for a structural transition can be detected at low temperature, whereas an antiferromagnetic ordering is observed, characterized by a propagation vectors k  =  (0,0,½). Magnetic moments order in the tetragonal ab-plane and the magnetic structure belongs to the Shubnikov magnetic space group P4/mbm.

Magnetostructural behavior in the non-centrosymmetric compound Nd7Pd3

A systematic study of the physical properties and microscopic magnetism of Nd₇Pd₃ compound, which in the paramagnetic state crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric hexagonal Th₇Fe₃-type structure (hP20-P6₃ mc; with a  =  10.1367(1) Å and c  =  6.3847(1) Å at 300 K), confirms multiple magnetic ordering transitions that occur upon cooling. Antiferromagnetic transition is observed at T _N  =  37 K, which is followed by ferromagnetic transformation at T _C  =  33 K. The first-order magnetic transition at T _C is magnetoelastic: it involves a change of crystal symmetry from P6₃ mc to Cmc2₁ and leads to anisotropic changes of the unit cell parameters. While the antiferromagnetic structure is symmetry allowed in P6₃ mc, the ferromagnetic structure with magnetic moments along the a-direction of the original hexagonal unit cell induces the first order transition to Cmc2₁. Density functional theory calculations confirm the experimentally observed ground state with the a-axis as the easy magnetization direction.

The huge effect of Mn substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of LaFeAsO: the La(Fe,Mn)AsO system

The substitution of Mn for Fe on the sub-lattice in LaFeAsO has a remarkable impact on both structural and magnetic properties; for example, the structural and magnetic transition temperatures decrease of ~20 K in samples with a Mn-content as low as x  =  0.01. Such a dramatic effect results from the high stability of the substituting Mn²⁺ ion (3d ⁵) in its high-spin state, which opposes any variation to its electronic state (configuration), perturbing thereby interactions within the Fe sub-lattice between the Fe ions surrounding the substituent. Several investigations ascertained that the structural transformation in LnFeAsO compounds (Ln: lanthanide) cannot be ascribed to lattice degrees of freedom, but rather to electronic or spin ones. In this context, even an extremely low concentration of Mn²⁺ ions diluted in the Fe sub-lattice produces a reduction of the electronic degree of freedom of the system, thus hindering the structural transformation and the magnetic transition.

Magnetic structure and field-dependent magnetic phase diagram of Ni2In-type PrCuSi

The magnetic structure of the ternary equiatomic intermetallic compound PrCuSi is investigated using neutron powder diffraction experiments in 0 T as well as in external magnetic fields up to 2 T. The PrCuSi compound crystallizes in the hexagonal Ni₂In-type structure, in the space group P6₃/mmc. In this structure, cationic ordering of Cu and Si takes place. The antiferromagnetic phase transition in the Pr sublattice takes place at [Formula: see text] K in 0 T. Under an external magnetic field of 2 T, a field-induced ferromagnetic phase is observed. Magnetoelastic coupling is evidenced by an increase in the unit cell volume. Clear signatures of a mixed antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phase in weak, intermediate fields, 0.4-0.8 T, are obtained from the present study. Using the present set of experimental data, we construct the H  -  T phase diagram of PrCuSi.

Suppression of ferromagnetic order by Ag-doping: a neutron scattering investigation on Ce2(Pd1-x Ag x )2In (x = 0.20, 0.50)

The ground state magnetic behaviour of Ce₂(Pd_0.8Ag_0.2)₂In and Ce₂(Pd_0.5Ag_0.5)₂In, found in the ferromagnetic branch of Ce₂Pd₂In, has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction at low temperature. Ce₂(Pd_0.8Ag_0.2)₂In is characterized by a ferromagnetic structure with the Ce moments aligned along the c-axis and values of 0.96(2) µ _B. The compound retains the P4/mbm throughout the magnetic transition, although the magnetic ordering is accompanied by a significant decrease of the lattice strain along [0 0 l], suggesting a magnetostructural contribution. The magnetic behaviour of Ce₂(Pd_0.5Ag_0.5)₂In is very different; this compound exhibits an extremely reduced magnetic scattering contribution in the diffraction pattern, that can be ascribed to a different kind of ferromagnetic ordering, with extremely reduced magnetic moments (~0.1 µ _B) aligned along [0 l 0]. These results point to a competition between different types of magnetic correlations induced by Ag-substitution, giving rise to a magnetically frustrated scenario in Ce₂(Pd_0.5Ag_0.5)₂In.

Comparison of fecal pooling strategies for detection of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis in cattle

In herds with typical moderate to low within-herd prevalence, testing for Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the infectious agent of Johne's disease, will be more cost-effective if individual fecal samples are cultured in composite pools. However, sensitivity to classify a pool containing 1 or more positive individual samples as positive may depend on pool size and number of individual positive samples within a pool. Fecal samples collected from 994 dairy cows sampled at slaughter were cultured to detect MAP. Culturing was done both individually and as composite pooled samples using the TREK ESP Culture System II broth medium (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Trek Diagnostic Systems Inc., Cleveland, OH). Composite samples consisted of pools containing feces from 3, 5, 8, 10, or 15 cows. The number of individual fecal culture-positive cows within each pool ranged from 0 to 4. Culture of individual fecal samples detected MAP in 36 (3.6%) of the 994 cows. Individual samples that were detected within the first 50 d by TREK ESP Culture System II were more likely to lead to a positive pool result. In total, 840 pooled fecal samples were examined for presence of MAP, and of those, 272 pools actually contained feces from fecal culture-positive cows. The crude sensitivity (proportion of pools that contained at least 1 fecal-positive cow that tested positive) for pools of 3, 5, 8, 10, and 15 was 47, 67, 44, 59, and 39%, respectively. Across pools, an increase of the number of fecal culture-positive samples from 1 to 2 enhanced overall crude sensitivity from 44 to 71%. However, sensitivity did not further increase for pools with 3 or 4 fecal culture-positive samples (63 and 60%, respectively). Additionally, a simulation analysis assessing probability of pooled fecal samples being positive in herds of 50 and 100 cows was conducted. The simulation assumed that 1, 2, or 5 cows per herd were MAP fecal culture-positive and that pools of 5 and 10 were used. This low-prevalence herd simulation indicated that weighted mean herd probabilities of detecting a positive herd ranged between 52 and 99.3%, with the lowest probability for pools of 10 with 1 positive cow in the herd and the highest probability for pools of 5 with 5 positive cows in the herd. However, overall, pools of 5 and 10 had similar diagnostic capabilities, enabling cost savings by utilizing pools of 10.

Determination of the contamination by azole antimycotics in hospital and house sewage - a pilot project for the city of Dresden

Medicininal compounds and their metabolites are known to end up in sewerage and may slip through the cleaning process. Azole antimycotics are frequently used in hospitals, in particular for patients with cancer or immunosuppression. The aim of the study was to determine whether measurable azole antimycotic concentrations were introducted in the sewarage drain of an acute care hospital with special interest in oncology and hematology and the extent of removal of antimycotics by the sewerage treatment plant. For this, the concentrations of three commonly used azole antimycotics were measured in the effluent of the sewerage drain at the University Hospital Dresden, as well as in the influent and effluent of the main sewerage treatment plant of the city. To extrapolate the theoretical influent to the sewerage treatment plant, prescription from the regio`s main health insurance the AOK Sachsen and the hospital consumption data were used. Measurable concentrations were obtained for fluconazole and ketoconazole in the influent and effluent of the sewerage treatment plant. Voriconazole's concentrations were under the lower limit of quantification. To determine the azole clearance of the treatment plant a sludge sample was investigated. Sufficient clearance was detected for ketoconazole but not for fluconazole. The consumption and prescription rates were collected and correlated with the measured concentrations. In result, only fluconazole's concentrations provided a good match with the prescription and consumption data.

Dipolar Spin Ice States with a Fast Monopole Hopping Rate in CdEr_{2}X_{4} (X=Se, S)

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr_{2}Se_{4} is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}. In this Letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr_{2}Se_{4} and CdEr_{2}S_{4} support a dipolar spin ice state-the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to those in Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}, i.e., dilute and uncorrelated, and so cannot provide three orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er^{3+} ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr_{2}X_{4} (X=Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr_{2}X_{4} offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples.

Knowledge gaps that hamper prevention and control of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection

In the last decades, many regional and country-wide control programmes for Johne's disease (JD) were developed due to associated economic losses, or because of a possible association with Crohn's disease. These control programmes were often not successful, partly because management protocols were not followed, including the introduction of infected replacement cattle, because tests to identify infected animals were unreliable, and uptake by farmers was not high enough because of a perceived low return on investment. In the absence of a cure or effective commercial vaccines, control of JD is currently primarily based on herd management strategies to avoid infection of cattle and restrict within-farm and farm-to-farm transmission. Although JD control programmes have been implemented in most developed countries, lessons learned from JD prevention and control programmes are underreported. Also, JD control programmes are typically evaluated in a limited number of herds and the duration of the study is less than 5 year, making it difficult to adequately assess the efficacy of control programmes. In this manuscript, we identify the most important gaps in knowledge hampering JD prevention and control programmes, including vaccination and diagnostics. Secondly, we discuss directions that research should take to address those knowledge gaps.

Pressure induced effects on the chemical and magnetic structure of spinel MnV2O4

The influence of external pressure (P  ⩽  5 GPa) on both the structural and magnetic ordering in MnV₂O₄ has been investigated using neutron diffraction technique. The volume and the V-V distance decrease with pressure while the c/a ratio increases, suggesting a lowering of the distortion with pressure. Under ambient conditions this compound exhibits a structural transition (T _S) from tetragonal to cubic at ~53 K and a magnetic transition (T _N ) at ~56 K. It is found that with an increase in pressure to 5 GPa, T _N increases (from 56 K to 80 K), dT _N /dP  >  0, while T _S decreases (from 53 K to 37 K). The non collinear magnetic structure in the tetragonal phase at 5 GPa and 10 K remains the same as at ambient pressure. However, the Mn and V sublattice, now exhibits distinct transition temperatures, [Formula: see text] ~ 80 K, and [Formula: see text] ~ 60 K. The transition to the cubic phase at T _S is accompanied by a collinear alignment of the Mn and V spins and a reduction in the Mn moment. The region in which the structure remains in the cubic phase with collinear magnetic structure increases with pressure from ~3 K at ambient pressure to ~43 K at 5 GPa pressure.

Learning by experience? Visceral pain-related neural and behavioral responses in a classical conditioning paradigm

BACKGROUND

Studies investigating mechanisms underlying nocebo responses in pain have mainly focused on negative expectations induced by verbal suggestions. Herein, we addressed neural and behavioral correlates of nocebo responses induced by classical conditioning in a visceral pain model.

METHODS

In two independent studies, a total of 40 healthy volunteers underwent classical conditioning, consisting of repeated pairings of one visual cue (CS^High ) with rectal distensions of high intensity, while a second cue (CS^Low ) was always followed by low-intensity distensions. During subsequent test, only low-intensity distensions were delivered, preceded by either CS^High or CS^Low . Distension intensity ratings were assessed in both samples and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were available from one study (N=16). As a consequence of conditioning, we hypothesized CS^High -cued distensions to be perceived as more intense and expected enhanced cue- and distension-related neural responses in regions encoding sensory and affective dimensions of pain and in structures associated with pain-related fear memory.

KEY RESULTS

During test, distension intensity ratings did not differ depending on preceding cue. Greater distension-induced neural activation was observed in somatosensory, prefrontal, and cingulate cortices and caudate when preceded by CS^High . Analysis of cue-related responses revealed strikingly similar activation patterns.

CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES

We report changes in neural activation patterns during anticipation and visceral stimulation induced by prior conditioning. In the absence of behavioral effects, markedly altered neural responses may indicate conditioning with visceral signals to induce hypervigilance rather than hyperalgesia, involving altered attention, reappraisal, and perceptual acuity as processes contributing to the pathophysiology of visceral pain.

Experimental Evidence for Static Charge Density Waves in Iron Oxypnictides

In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics of Fe-based superconductors, indicating that the density wave ordering is charge driven.

Tetragonal to triclinic structural transition in the prototypical CeScSi induced by a two-step magnetic ordering: a temperature-dependent neutron diffraction study of CeScSi, CeScGe and LaScSi

An investigation on the ground state magnetism of CeScSi, CeScGe (tetragonal CeScSi-type, tI12, space group I4/mmm) by temperature-dependent powder neutron diffraction has been carried out, as debated and controversial data regarding the low temperature magnetic behaviours of these two compounds were reported. Our studies reveal that, while cooling, long-range magnetic ordering in CeScSi and CeScGe takes place by a two-step process. A first transition leads to a magnetic structure with the Ce moments aligned ferromagnetically onto two neighbouring tetragonal basal a-b planes of the CeScSi-type structure; the double layers are then antiferromagnetically coupled to each other along the c-axis. The transition temperature associated with the first ordering is T _N ~ 26 K and T _N ~ 48 K for the silicide and the germanide, respectively. Here the spin directions are rigorously confined to the basal plane, with values of the Ce magnetic moments of μ _Ce  =  0.8-1.0 μ _B. A second magnetic transition, which takes place at slightly lower temperatures, results in a canting of the ordered magnetic moments out of the basal plane which is accompanied by an increase of the magnetic moment value of Ce to μ _Ce  =  1.4-1.5 μ _B. Interestingly, the second magnetic transition leads to a structural distortion in both compounds from the higher-symmetry tetragonal space group I4/mmm to the lower-symmetry and triclinic I-1 (non-standard triclinic). Magnetic symmetry analysis shows that the canted structure would not be allowed in the I4/mmm space group; this result further confirms the structural transition. The transition temperatures T _S from I4/mmm to I-1 are about 22 K in CeScSi and 36 K in CeScGe, i.e. well below the temperature of the first onset of antiferromagnetic order observed in this work (or below the ordering temperature, previously reported as either T _C or T _N). This result, along with the synchronism of the magnetic and structural transitions, suggests a magnetostructural origin of this structural distortion. We have also carried out powder neutron diffraction for LaScSi as a non-magnetically-ordering reference compound and compared the results with those of CeScSi and CeScGe compounds.

Transformation from an easy-plane to an easy-axis antiferromagnetic structure in the mixed rare-earth ferroborates Pr x Y1-x Fe3(BO3)4: magnetic properties and crystal field calculations

The magnetic structure of the mixed rare-earth system Pr x Y1-x Fe3(BO3)4 (x  =  0.75, 0.67, 0.55, 0.45, 0.25) was studied via magnetic and resonance measurements. These data evidence the successive spin reorientation from the easy-axis antiferromagnetic structure formed in PrFe3(BO3)4 to the easy-plane one of YFe3(BO3)4 associated with the weakening of the magnetic anisotropy of the Pr subsystem due to its diamagnetic dilution by nonmagnetic Y. This reorientation occurs through the formation of an inclined magnetic structure, as was confirmed by our previous neutron research in the range of x  =  0.67 ÷ 0.45. In the compounds with x  =  0.75 and 0.67 whose magnetic structure is close to the easy-axis one, a two-step spin reorientation takes place in the magnetic field H||c. Such a peculiarity is explained by the formation of an interjacent inclined magnetic structure with magnetic moments of Fe ions located closer to the basal plane than in the initial state, with these intermediate states remaining stable in some ranges of the magnetic field. An approach based on a crystal field model for the Pr(3+) ion and the molecular-field approximation is used to describe the magnetic characteristics of the system Pr x Y1-x Fe3(BO3)4. With the parameters of the d-d and f-d exchange interactions, of the magnetic anisotropy of the iron subsystem and of the crystal field parameters of praseodymium thus determined, it is possible to achieve a good agreement between the experimental and calculated temperature and field dependences of the magnetization curves (up to 90 kOe) and magnetic susceptibilities (2-300 K).

Dairy farmers' perceptions toward the implementation of on-farm Johne's disease prevention and control strategies

Implementation of specific management strategies on dairy farms is currently the most effective way to reduce the prevalence of Johne's disease (JD), an infectious chronic enteritis of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). However, dairy farmers often fail to implement recommended strategies. The objective of this study was to assess perceptions of farmers participating in a JD prevention and control program toward recommended practices, and explore factors that influence whether or not a farmer adopts risk-reducing measures for MAP transmission. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 dairy farmers enrolled in a voluntary JD control program in Alberta, Canada. Principles of classical grounded theory were used for participant selection, interviewing, and data analysis. Additionally, demographic data and MAP infection status were collected and analyzed using quantitative questionnaires and the JD control program database. Farmers' perceptions were distinguished according to 2 main categories: first, their belief in the importance of JD, and second, their belief in recommended JD prevention and control strategies. Based on these categories, farmers were classified into 4 groups: proactivists, disillusionists, deniers, and unconcerned. The first 2 groups believed in the importance of JD, and proactivists and unconcerned believed in proposed JD prevention and control measures. Groups that regarded JD as important had better knowledge about best strategies to reduce MAP transmission and had more JD risk assessments conducted on their farm. Although not quantified, it also appeared that these groups had more JD prevention and control practices in place. However, often JD was not perceived as a problem in the herd and generally farmers did not regard JD control as a "hot topic" in communications with their herd veterinarian and other farmers. Recommendations regarding how to communicate with farmers and motivate various groups of farmers according to their specific perceptions were provided to optimize adoption of JD prevention and control measures and thereby increase success of voluntary JD control programs.

Dimensional Reduction in Quantum Dipolar Antiferromagnets

We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF_{4}. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h_{4} universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF_{4} which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T_{N}, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice.

Magnetic structures of R5Ni2In4 and R11Ni4In9 (R = Tb and Ho): strong hierarchy in the temperature dependence of the magnetic ordering in the multiple rare-earth sublattices

The magnetic properties and magnetic structures of the R 5Ni2In4 and the microfibrous R 11Ni4In9 compounds with R  =  Tb and Ho have been examined using magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction data. Rare earth atoms occupy three and five symmetrically inequivalent rare earth sites in R 5Ni2In4 and R 11Ni4In9 compounds, respectively. As a result of the intra- and inter-magnetic sublattice interactions, the magnetic exchange interactions are different for various rare earth sites; this leads to a cascade of magnetic transitions with a strong hierarchy in the temperature dependence of the magnetic orderings. A transition at T C  =  125 K in Tb5Ni2In4 [κ 1  =  (0, 0, 0)] leads to a ferro/ferrimagnetic order where the magnetic ordering in one of the three R-sublattices leads to the ordering of another one; the third sublattice stays non-magnetic. New magnetic Bragg peaks appearing below T N  =  20 K can be indexed with the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector κ 2  =  (0, 0.636, ½); at T N  =  20 K a cycloidal spin order, which acts mostly upon the third R-sublattice, occurs. Ho5Ni2In4 establishes first antiferromagnetism [κ  =  (0, 0, 0)] at T N  =  31 K on two R-sublattices; then the system becomes ferro/ferrimagnetic at T C  =  25 K with the third sublattice ordering as well. Tb11Ni4In9 has three magnetic transitions at T C  =  135 K, T N1  =  35 K and at T N2  =  20 K; they are respectively coupled to the appearance of different propagation vectors [κ 1  =  (0, 0, 0), κ 2  =  (0, 0, ½), κ 3  =  (0, 1, ½)], which themselves are operating differently on the five different R-sublattices. Two sublattices remain mostly ferromagnetic down to lowest temperature while the three others are predominantly coupled antiferromagnetically. In Ho11Ni4In9 a purely antiferromagnetic order, described by four different magnetic propagation vectors [κ 1  =  (0, 0.62, 0), κ 2  =  (0, 1, 0), κ 3  =  (0, 0, ½), κ 4  =  (0, 1, ½)], succeedingly includes all five different sublattices on cooling through transitions at T N1  =  22 K, T N2  =  12 K, T N3  =  8 K and T N4  =  7 K. The strength of the magnetic interactions of the different sublattices can be linked to structural details for both R 5Ni2In4 and R 11Ni4In9 compounds.

Tobacco use among prison staff in Germany: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Studies on tobacco in the prison environment report high prevalence of use among detainees, but little data regarding staff are available. An observational study addressing tobacco control in German prisons was conducted in 2011. It involved multiple strands (quantitative and qualitative components) both among detainees and staff. This article presents quantitative results regarding staff.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study among prison employees in 16 different institutions in nine regions (Länder) in Germany. Tobacco use and second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure (primary outcomes) were assessed by a questionnaire designed specifically. Logistic regression models were used to assess the risk factors associated with each outcome.

RESULTS

Among 704 participants (60.6% male, mean age 43.9 years ± 9.33), 27.7% are smokers and 68% declared to be exposed to SHS. Independent factors associated with smoking were female gender [odds ratio (OR) 1.49,P= 0.026], an age below 45 years (OR 1.35,P= 0.08) and working in areas other than administration (ORP= 0.08). An age below 45 was associated with a higher degree of self-reported SHS exposure. The association between SHS and gender was different depending on occupational area with significantly more men exposed to SHS in administrative area and more women in health/social area (interaction between gender and occupational area,P= 0.02).

CONCLUSION

Importance of SHS exposure among prison employees and confirm the need for a comprehensive tobacco control policy including support to smoking cessation and better enforcement of the smoke-free regulation, especially where staff contributes to SHS. Particular attention has to be given to female employees.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature-tracking assessment of myocardial mechanics: Intervendor agreement and considerations regarding reproducibility

Aim

To assess intervendor agreement of cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT) and to study the impact of repeated measures on reproducibility.

Materials and methods

Ten healthy volunteers underwent cine imaging in short-axis orientation at rest and with dobutamine stimulation (10 and 20 μg/kg/min). All images were analysed three times using two types of software (TomTec, Unterschleissheim, Germany and Circle, cvi⁴², Calgary, Canada) to assess global left ventricular circumferential (Ecc) and radial (Err) strains and torsion. Differences in intra- and interobserver variability within and between software types were assessed based on single and averaged measurements (two and three repetitions with subsequent averaging of results, respectively) as determined by Bland–Altman analysis, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and coefficient of variation (CoV).

Results

Myocardial strains and torsion significantly increased on dobutamine stimulation with both types of software (p<0.05). Resting Ecc and torsion as well as Ecc values during dobutamine stimulation were lower measured with Circle (p<0.05). Intra- and interobserver variability between software types was lowest for Ecc (ICC 0.81 [0.63–0.91], 0.87 [0.72–0.94] and CoV 12.47% and 14.3%, respectively) irrespective of the number of analysis repetitions. Err and torsion showed higher variability that markedly improved for torsion with repeated analyses and to a lesser extent for Err. On an intravendor level TomTec showed better reproducibility for Ecc and torsion and Circle for Err.

Conclusions

CMR-FT strain and torsion measurements are subject to considerable intervendor variability, which can be reduced using three analysis repetitions. For both vendors, Ecc qualifies as the most robust parameter with the best agreement, albeit lower Ecc values obtained using Circle, and warrants further investigation of incremental clinical merit.

This is the first comparison of two types of CMR-FT software resulting in clinically valuable inter-vendor agreement data.

C-Arm Cone-Beam CT Combined with a New Electromagnetic Navigation System for Guidance of Percutaneous Needle Biopsies: Initial Clinical Experience

PURPOSE

To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of C-arm fluoroscopic cone-beam computed tomography (CACT) in combination with a new electromagnetic tracking (EMT) system for needle guidance during percutaneous biopsies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

53 patients were referred for biopsy of thoracic (n = 19) and abdominal (n = 34) lesions. CT-like images of the anatomical region of interest (ROI) were generated using a flat panel-based angiographic system. These images were transmitted to an EMT system. A coaxial puncture needle with a sensor in its tip was connected with the navigation system and tracked into an electromagnetic field created via a field generator. Data generated within this field were merged with the CACT images. On a monitor both the anatomical ROI and needle tip position were displayed to enable precise needle insertion into the target. Through the coaxial needle, biopsy specimens for the histologic evaluation were extracted. Number of representative biopsy samples, number of core biopsies/patient, total procedure time, dose-area product, fluoroscopic time, and complications were recorded.

RESULTS

53 CACT/EMT-guided biopsy procedures were performed, 48 of which (91 %) yielded representative tissue samples. Four core biopsies were obtained from each patient. 40 (75 %) lesions were malignant and 13 (25 %) lesions were benign. The total procedure time was 9 ± 5 min (range, 3 - 23 min), fluoroscopic time was 0.8 ± 0.4 min (range, 0.4 - 2 min). The mean dose-area product (cGy cm²) was 7373 (range, 895 - 26 904). The rate of complications (1 pneumothorax, 2 hemoptyses) was 6 %.

CONCLUSION

CACT combined with EMT appears to be a feasible and effective technique for the guidance of percutaneous biopsies with a low rate of therapeutically relevant complications.

High pressure synthesis of polar and non-polar cation-ordered polymorphs of Mn2ScSbO6

Two new Mn₂ScSbO₆ polymorphs are presented: an antiferromagnetic double perovskite (DPv) and a multiferroic Ni₃TeO₆-type (NTO) induced by site-selective disorder.

Origin of the highly anisotropic thermal expansion of the semiconducting ZnSb and relations with its thermoelectric applications
