Abstract
Plant carotenoids are synthesized and accumulated in plastids through a highly regulated pathway. Lycopene β-cyclase (LCYB) is a key enzyme involved directly in the synthesis of α-carotene and β-carotene through the cyclization of trans-lycopene. Daucus carota harbors two LCYB genes, of which DcLCYB2 (annotated as CCS-Like) is mostly expressed in mature storage roots, an organ that accumulates high α-carotene and β-carotene content. In this work, we determined that DcLCYB2 of the orange Nantes variety presents plastid localization and encodes for a functional LCYB enzyme determined by means of heterologous complementation in Escherichia coli. Also, ectopic expression of DcLCYB2 in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) plants increases total carotenoid content showing its functional role in plants. In addition, transgenic tobacco T2 homozygous plants showed better performance under chronic salt treatment, while kiwi transgenic calli also presented a higher survival rate under salt treatments than control calli. Our results allow us to propose DcLCYB2 as a prime candidate to engineer carotenoid biofortified crops as well as crops resilient to saline environments.

Abstract
Sjögren's Syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease, characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands. Approximately 10% of patients with SS have pulmonary involvement as the first manifestation of their disease, the most common being non-specific interstitial pneumonia. We present the case of a 51-year-old man with organizing pneumonia as the presenting feature of primary SS. Pulmonary involvement as the presenting feature of SS is uncommon, especially when the pattern on CT-scan is that of organized pneumonia. Initial management includes steroids and other immunosuppressants agents, with a better response in organized pneumonia secondary SS cases.

Abstract
ALFIN-like transcription factors (ALs) are involved in several physiological processes such as seed germination, root development and abiotic stress responses in plants. In carrot (Daucus carota), the expression of DcPSY2, a gene encoding phytoene synthase required for carotenoid biosynthesis, is induced after salt and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Interestingly, the DcPSY2 promoter contains multiple ALFIN response elements. By in silico analysis, we identified two putative genes with the molecular characteristics of ALs, DcAL4 and DcAL7, in the carrot transcriptome. These genes encode nuclear proteins that transactivate reporter genes and bind to the carrot DcPSY2 promoter in yeast. The expression of both genes is induced in carrot under salt stress, especially DcAL4 which also responds to ABA treatment. Transgenic homozygous T3 Arabidopsis thaliana lines that stably express DcAL4 and DcAL7 show a higher survival rate with respect to control plants after chronic salt stress. Of note is that DcAL4 lines present a better performance in salt treatments, correlating with the expression level of DcAL4, AtPSY and AtDXR and an increase in carotenoid and chlorophyll contents. Likewise, DcAL4 transgenic kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) lines show increased carotenoid and chlorophyll content and higher survival rate compared to control plants after chronic salt treatment. Therefore, DcAL4 and DcAL7 encode functional transcription factors, while ectopic expression of DcAL4 provides increased tolerance to salinity in Arabidopsis and Kiwi plants.

Abstract
Light stimulates carotenoid synthesis in plants during photomorphogenesis through the expression of PHYTOENE SYNTHASE (PSY), a key gene in carotenoid biosynthesis. The orange carrot (Daucus carota) synthesizes and accumulates high amounts of carotenoids in the taproot that grows underground. Contrary to other organs, light impairs carrot taproot development and represses the expression of carotenogenic genes, such as DcPSY1 and DcPSY2, reducing carotenoid accumulation. By means of RNA sequencing, in a previous analysis, we observed that carrot PHYTOCHROME RAPIDLY REGULATED1 (DcPAR1) is more highly expressed in the underground grown taproot compared with those grown in light. PAR1 is a transcriptional cofactor with a negative role in shade avoidance syndrome regulation in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) through the dimerization with PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORs (PIFs), allowing a moderate synthesis of carotenoids. Here, we show that overexpressing AtPAR1 in carrot increases carotenoid production in taproots grown underground as well as DcPSY1 expression. The high expression of AtPAR1 and DcPAR1 led us to hypothesize a functional role of DcPAR1 that was verified through in vivo binding to AtPIF7 and overexpression in Arabidopsis, where AtPSY expression and carotenoid accumulation increased together with a photomorphogenic phenotype. Finally, DcPAR1 antisense carrot lines presented a dramatic decrease in carotenoid levels and in relative expression of key carotenogenic genes as well as impaired taproot development. These results suggest that DcPAR1 is a key factor for secondary root development and carotenoid synthesis in carrot taproot grown underground.

Abstract
Carotenoids are pigments with important nutritional value in the human diet. As antioxidant molecules, they act as scavengers of free radicals enhancing immunity and preventing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, α-carotene and β-carotene, the main carotenoids of carrots (Daucus carota) are precursors of vitamin A, whose deficiency in the diet can trigger night blindness and macular degeneration. With the aim of increasing the carotenoid content in fruit flesh, three key genes of the carotenoid pathway, phytoene synthase (DcPSY2) and lycopene cyclase (DcLCYB1) from carrots, and carotene desaturase (XdCrtI) from the yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous, were optimized for expression in apple and cloned under the Solanum chilense (tomatillo) polygalacturonase (PG) fruit specific promoter. A biotechnological platform was generated and functionally tested by subcellular localization, and single, double and triple combinations were both stably transformed in tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. Microtom) and transiently transformed in Fuji apple fruit flesh (Malus domestica). We demonstrated the functionality of the S. chilense PG promoter by directing the expression of the transgenes specifically to fruits. Transgenic tomato fruits expressing DcPSY2, DcLCYB1, and DcPSY2-XdCRTI, produced 1.34, 2.0, and 1.99-fold more total carotenoids than wild-type fruits, respectively. Furthermore, transgenic tomatoes expressing DcLCYB1, DcPSY2-XdCRTI, and DcPSY2-XdCRTI-DcLCYB1 exhibited an increment in β-carotene levels of 2.5, 3.0, and 2.57-fold in comparison with wild-type fruits, respectively. Additionally, Fuji apple flesh agroinfiltrated with DcPSY2 and DcLCYB1 constructs showed a significant increase of 2.75 and 3.11-fold in total carotenoids and 5.11 and 5.84-fold in β-carotene, respectively whereas the expression of DcPSY2-XdCRTI and DcPSY2-XdCRTI-DcLCYB1 generated lower, but significant changes in the carotenoid profile of infiltrated apple flesh. The results in apple demonstrate that DcPSY2 and DcLCYB1 are suitable biotechnological genes to increase the carotenoid content in fruits of species with reduced amounts of these pigments.

Abstract
The persistence of ferroelectricity in ultrathin layers relies critically on screening or compensation of polarization charges which otherwise destabilize the ferroelectric state. At surfaces, charged defects play a crucial role in the screening mechanism triggering novel mixed electrochemical-ferroelectric states. At interfaces, however, the coupling between ferroelectric and electrochemical states has remained unexplored. Here, we make use of the dynamic formation of the oxygen vacancy profile in the nanometer-thick barrier of a ferroelectric tunnel junction to demonstrate the interplay between electrochemical and ferroelectric degrees of freedom at an oxide interface. We fabricate ferroelectric tunnel junctions with a La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} bottom electrode and BaTiO_{3} ferroelectric barrier. We use poling strategies to promote the generation and transport of oxygen vacancies at the metallic top electrode. Generated oxygen vacancies control the stability of the ferroelectric polarization and modify its coercive fields. The ferroelectric polarization, in turn, controls the ionization of oxygen vacancies well above the limits of thermodynamic equilibrium, triggering the build up of a Schottky barrier at the interface which can be turned on and off with ferroelectric switching. This interplay between electronic and electrochemical degrees of freedom yields very large values of the electroresistance (more than 10^{6}% at low temperatures) and enables a controlled switching between clockwise and counterclockwise switching modes in the same junction (and consequently, a change of the sign of the electroresistance). The strong coupling found between electrochemical and electronic degrees of freedom sheds light on the growing debate between resistive and ferroelectric switching in ferroelectric tunnel junctions, and moreover, can be the source of novel concepts in memory devices and neuromorphic computing.

Abstract
Carotenoids are terpenoid pigments synthesized by all photosynthetic and some non-photosynthetic organisms. In plants, these lipophilic compounds are involved in photosynthesis, photoprotection, and phytohormone synthesis. In plants, carotenoid biosynthesis is induced by several environmental factors such as light including photoreceptors, such as phytochromes (PHYs) and negatively regulated by phytochrome interacting factors (PIFs). Daucus carota (carrot) is one of the few plant species that synthesize and accumulate carotenoids in the storage root that grows in darkness. Contrary to other plants, light inhibits secondary root growth and carotenoid accumulation suggesting the existence of new mechanisms repressed by light that regulate both processes. To identify genes induced by dark and repressed by light that regulate carotenoid synthesis and carrot root development, in this work an RNA-Seq analysis was performed from dark- and light-grown carrot roots. Using this high-throughput sequencing methodology, a de novo transcriptome model with 63,164 contigs was obtained, from which 18,488 were differentially expressed (DEG) between the two experimental conditions. Interestingly, light-regulated genes are preferably expressed in dark-grown roots. Enrichment analysis of GO terms with DEGs genes, validation of the transcriptome model and DEG analysis through qPCR allow us to hypothesize that genes involved in photomorphogenesis and light perception such as PHYA, PHYB, PIF3, PAR1, CRY2, FYH3, FAR1 and COP1 participate in the synthesis of carotenoids and carrot storage root development.

Abstract
Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) originated from mature post thymic T cells. They represent 1-3% of NHL. Different subtypes have been described: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-negative ALCL, ALK-positive ALCL and breast implant-associated ALCL. ALK-positive ALCL affects mainly the young and has better prognosis. We present a case report of an adult woman with AKL-positive ALCL, diagnosed by endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspirate (EBUS-TBNA). A 59-year-old women with no history of breast implants, was admitted for a four-month low back pain. Initially, the patient was treated for a spondyloarthropathy, but due to persistence of the symptoms, a lumbosacral MRI was performed, showing changes in morphology and signal intensity in the vertebral body of L3, along with edema and a paravertebral collection that affected the left psoas muscle, suggesting granulomatous spondylodiscitis. Chest CT-scan showed mild left pleural effusion, subcarinal and right hiliar adenomegalies. An EBUS-TBNA with ROSE (rapid on-site evaluation) was performed showing positive findings for malignancy, suggestive of hematolymphoid neoplasia. Pathology analysis showed an AKL-positive ALCL. Additionally, a biopsy of paravertebral tissue biopsy was obtained, which was consistent with the nodal sample. Chemotherapy was initiated with the CHOP protocol: cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin, vincristine sulfate and prednisone. EBUS-TBNA is a minimally invasive and safe technique for obtaining mediastinal samples. Collaboration with a cytopathologist trained to perform ROSE improves the diagnostic performance.

Abstract
Daucus carota is a biennale crop that develops an edible storage root. Orange carrots, the most consumed cultivar worldwide, accumulate high levels of β-carotene and α-carotene in the storage root during secondary growth. Genes involved in β-carotene synthesis have been identified in carrots and unlike most species, D. carota has two ζ-carotene desaturase genes, named ZDS1 and ZDS2, that share 91.3 % identity in their coding regions. ZDS1 expression falls during leaf, but not root development, while ZDS2 is induced in leaves and storage roots of a mature plant. In this work, by means of post-transcriptional gene silencing, we determined that ZDS1 is essential for initial carrot development. The suppression of the expression of this gene by RNAi triggered a reduction in the transcript levels of ZDS2 and PSY2 genes, with a concomitant decrease in the carotenoid content in both, leaves and storage roots. On the contrary, transgenic lines with reduced ZDS2 transcript abundance maintain the same levels of expression of endogenous ZDS1 and PSY2 and carotenoid profile as wild-type plants. The simultaneous silencing of ZDS1 and ZDS2 resulted in lines with a negligible leaf and root development, as well as significantly lower endogenous PSY2 expression. Further functional analyses, such as a plastidial subcellular localization of ZDS1:GFP and the increment in carotenoid content in transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing the carrot ZDS1, confirmed that ZDS1 codifies for a functional enzyme. Overall, these results lead us to propose that the main ζ-carotene desaturase activity in carrot is encoded by the ZDS1 gene and ZDS2 gene has a complementary and non essential role.

Abstract
The electronic reconstruction occurring at oxide interfaces may be the source of interesting device concepts for future oxide electronics. Among oxide devices, multiferroic tunnel junctions are being actively investigated as they offer the possibility to modulate the junction current by independently controlling the switching of the magnetization of the electrodes and of the ferroelectric polarization of the barrier. In this Letter, we show that the spin reconstruction at the interfaces of a La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/BaTiO_{3}/La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} multiferroic tunnel junction is the origin of a spin filtering functionality that can be turned on and off by reversing the ferroelectric polarization. The ferroelectrically controlled interface spin filter enables a giant electrical modulation of the tunneling magnetoresistance between values of 10% and 1000%, which could inspire device concepts in oxides-based low dissipation spintronics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although anthracycline-based triplets are one of the most widely used schedules to treat advanced gastric cancer (AGC), the benefit of including epirubicin in these therapeutic combinations remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate both the efficacy and tolerance of triplets with epirubicin vs. doublets with platinum-fluoropyrimidine in a national AGC registry. METHODS Patients with AGC treated with polychemotherapy without trastuzumab at 28 hospitals in Spain between 2008 and 2016 were included. The effect of anthracycline-based triplets against doublets was evaluated by propensity score matching (PSM) and Cox proportional hazards (PH) regression. RESULT A total of 1002 patients were included (doublets, n = 653; anthracycline-based triplets, n = 349). The multivariable Cox PH regression failed to detect significantly increased OS in favor of triplets with anthracyclines: HR 0.90 (95% CI, 0.78-1.05), p = 0.20035. After PSM, the sample contained 325 pairs with similar baseline characteristics. This method was also unable to reveal an increase in OS: 10.5 (95% CI, 9.7-12.3) vs. 9.9 (95% CI, 9.2-11.4) months, HR 0.91 (CI 95%, 0.76-1.083), and (log-rank test, p = 0.226). Response rates (42.1 vs. 33.1%, p = 0.12) and PFS (HR 0.95, CI 95%, 0.80-1.13, log-rank test, p = 0.873) were not significantly higher with epirubicin-based regimens. The triplets were associated with greater grade 3-4 hematological toxicity, and increased hospitalization due to toxicity by 68%. The addition of epirubicin is viable, but 23.7% discontinued treatment because of adverse effects or patient decision. CONCLUSION Anthracyclines added to platinum-fluoropyrimidine doublets did not improve the response rate or survival outcomes in patients with AGC but entailed greater toxicity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This trial aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of epigenetic therapy associated with cisplatin chemoradiation in FIGO Stage IIIB patients. METHODS Hydralazine containing either 182 mg for rapid-, or 83 mg for slow acetylators and magnesium valproate were administered at 30 mg/kg tid. Both drugs were taken until intracavitary therapy was finished. Pelvic external beam radiation and low-dose rate brachytherapy were administered at a total cumulative dose to point A of at least 85 Gy. Weekly cisplatin at 40 mg/m2 was delivered for six cycles. RESULTS Twenty-two patients were included and 18 (82%) patients completed treatment. Mean dose to point A was 84.6 + 2.2. Median number of cisplatin cycles was 5.5 (range, 1-6). Brachytherapy was delayed for technical reasons; the mean overall treatment time was 11.8 weeks. Grade 3 anemia, leucopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia were observed in 9%, 45%, 45%, and 9% of patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Hydralazine and valproate are well-tolerated and safe when administered with cisplatin chemoradiation. Unfortunately, the suboptimal administration of brachytherapy for technical reasons in this study, precluded assessing the efficacy of epigenetic therapy. However, the tolerability of this regimen administered concurrent to radiation needs to be further tested.

Abstract
Actinic cheilitis is a subtype of actinic keratosis that mainly affects the lower lip and has a higher risk of malignant transformation. Its location on the labial mucosa influences the therapeutic approach. Vermilionectomy requires local or general anesthetic and is associated with a risk of an unsightly scar, and the treatment with 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod lasts for several weeks and the inflammatory reaction can be very intense. A number of authors have used photodynamic therapy as an alternative to the usual treatments. We present 3 patients with histologically confirmed actinic cheilitis treated using photodynamic therapy with methyl aminolevulinic acid as the photosensitizer and red light at 630 nm. The clinical response was good, with no recurrences after 3 to 6 months of follow-up. Our experience supports the use of photodynamic therapy as a good alternative for the treatment of actinic cheilitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article describes a new method of transient intraoperative portosystemic shunting, Splachnic edema after portal cross-clamping can be a dangerous complication during the anhepatic phase of the liver transplant operation. The current method seeks to avoid this problem, without the use of external venovenous bypass pump, by a temporary portocaval shunt, with retrohepatic cava preservation as first described experimentally in dogs by Fonkalsrud et al in 1966. METHODS AND RESULTS Among 227 liver transplant operations, we utilized a transient portosystemic shunt in 29 cases. The indication to perform a temporary shunt in all cases was the development of splachnic edema. In 3 instances, we performed a portoumbilical anastomosis using a prominent umbilical vein. The other 26 procedures employed the usual portocaval shunts. In these cases, splachnic congestion and onset of edema developed after cross-clamping of the round ligament and the portal vein, which resolved after the portoumbilical anastomosis. DISCUSSION The flow in the shunt was in all cases greater than 1 L/min. The most important risk factor for the development of splachnic edema was the presence of a patent umbilical vein, which occurred in 34.5% of shunted patients. CONCLUSION The use of a patent umbilical vein to perform a portoumbilical shunt was an effective, easy method to decompress the splachnic area, avoiding dangerous congestion and edema.

Abstract
Eosinophilic polymorphic and pruritic eruption associated with radiotherapy (EPPER) is a rare entity that appears in oncological patients after radiotherapy. We describe two patients with breast tumour who presented with EPPER in a different area from the one that had been irradiated. One of them needed different types of treatment, topical and systemic corticosteroids, antihistamines and narrowband ultraviolet B. The other one responded to the application of topical corticosteroids. We suggested that this eruption could be more frequent than has been reported.

Syringocystoadenoma papilliferum is benign adnexal tumor derived from the sweat glands that is located in the head and neck in 70-80% of patients, and commonly presents as a papule or a solitary nodule. We report a case of syringocystoadenoma papilliferum with an atypical presentation given its location in the thigh and the peculiar histologic features, unrepresentative of this entity.

Abstract
Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra (CEH-P) complex is a progesterone-dependent disease that requires medical treatment in bitches intended for breeding. To test the efficacy and safety of a combined protocol and to assess the effect of age, stage of cycle, previous steroid hormone administration and parity on treatment, 29 bitches diagnosed with CEH-P complex were treated daily with cabergoline 5 microg/kg PO and cloprostenol 1 microg/kg SC for 7-14 days, along with supportive antibiotic and hydration therapies. Before treatment, and on Days 3, 7 and 14, all bitches were evaluated clinically and uterine horn diameter measured during trans-abdominal ultrasonography. Twenty-four of 29 bitches were cured by either Day 7 or 14. Nine bitches had mild digestive side effects. Clinical signs related to pyometra began to improve markedly as early as Day 2 of treatment. Uterine diameters decreased (P < 0.05) by Day 3 of treatment, and continued to gradually decrease, reaching normal size by Day 14. Relapses occurred in 6 of 29 cases. Pregnancy was achieved in one of the two young bitches bred after treatment. No significant relationships were found between success rate and age, stage of the estrous cycle, previous hormone administration or parity. Although no variables affecting treatment results could be identified, this combination of compounds was found to be an efficient and safe for treatment of CEH-P.

Abstract
We show magnetoresistance in excess of 1000% in trilayers containing highly spin-polarized La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and high-Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7. This large magnetoresistance is reminiscent of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in metallic superlattices but with much larger values, and originates at spin imbalance due to the injection of spin-polarized carriers. Furthermore, in contrast to ordinary GMR, the magnetoresistance is intimately related to the superconductivity in the YBa2Cu3O7 layer and vanishes in the normal state. This result, aside from its fundamental importance, may be of interest for the design of novel spintronic devices based on ferromagnet/superconductor structures.

Abstract
Tamoxifen is a synthetic, nonsteroidal Type I antiestrogenic compound that competitively blocks estrogen receptors with a mixed antagonist-agonist effect. The manifestation of these different actions depends on each species, organ, tissue and cell type considered. Very little is known about the effect of antiestrogens in dogs. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of tamoxifen citrate on some testis, prostate, hormone, and semen parameters in seven Beagle dogs with uncomplicated spontaneous benign prostatic hyperplasia. Two dogs were normospermic, four were oligozoospermic, and one was azoospermic. The dogs were allocated to a control pre-treatment period, followed by a treatment period, and five post-treatment periods (the duration of each period was 4 weeks). During the treatment period, 2.5mg tamoxifen citrate was given p.o. daily for 28 days to all the dogs. Maximum scrotal width, testicular consistency, libido semen parameters, prostatic volume, serum testosterone concentrations, and side effects were assessed. Tamoxifen negatively affected testis size and libido (P<0.01), and decreased prostatic volume (P<0.01) and testosterone concentrations during treatment. Semen quality deteriorated to nadir values (P<0.01) approximately one spermatic cycle after treatment and returned to pre-treatment values on the second cycle after treatment in all the dogs, except one young oligoazoospermic dog, in which the sperm count was higher ( P<0.01 ) at that time. No side effects were observed and fertility was conserved at the end of the study. Tamoxifen acted more like an agonist than antagonist on the gonadal axis and, therefore, upon both the prostate and testis. Therefore, tamoxifen may have therapeutic applications in dogs.

Abstract
Charge neutrality and stoichiometry impose severe restrictions on the mechanisms of epitaxial growth of complex oxides. The fundamental question arises of what is the minimum growth unit when sample thickness is reduced beyond the size of the unit cell. We have investigated the growth mechanism of YBa2Cu3O7 cuprate superconductor, using a consistent approach based on the growth of noninteger numbers of YBa2Cu3O7 layers in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7)/PrBa(2)Cu3O7 superlattices. Ex situ chemical and structural analysis evidence a 2D block-by-block mechanism in which the minimum growth units are complete unit cell blocks, growing coherently over large lateral distances.

Abstract
To evaluate the toxicity of VRCTC-310-Onco (Crotalus durissus terrificus crotoxin + cardiotoxin from Naja naja atra), 10 Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with intraperitoneal slow-release devices and subjected to treatment with 0.5 microgram/g body weight/d for 14 days. Biochemical evidence at days 7 and 14 showed blood, muscular, renal and metabolic disturbance, mostly reversed by day 28. No significant changes were found in necropsy. The limited toxicity of i.p. VRCTC-310-Onco in rats deserves further study.

Abstract
Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in commercial sunflower hybrids is thought to be derived from a related wild species, Helianthus petiolaris, yet CMS lines are known to carry the chloroplast DNA genotype of H. annuus. To clarify the origin of sunflower CMS, we developed a polymerase chain reaction-based strategy for detecting CMS in sunflower and surveyed more than 1,200 plants representing 55 accessions of H. annuus and 26 accessions of H. petiolaris. We also tested 160 progeny from three crosses for strict maternal inheritance of organelle DNAs to determine if the apparent discrepancy in the species donor of the mitochondrial DNA and chloroplast DNA genotypes in CMS lines might result from low-frequency maternal or biparental inheritance of either organelle. No CMS cytotypes were observed in natural populations of either H. annuus or H. petiolaris, and strict maternal inheritance of organelle DNA was observed. These data provide little insight, therefore, into the origin and population genetics of CMS in natural populations of sunflower, except that the evidence for strict maternal inheritance of organelles in sunflower makes it unlikely that the mtDNA and cpDNA genotypes in CMS lines were derived from different species. Nonetheless, the primers developed for assaying organelle DNA variation in sunflower may be useful tools for plant breeding programs, cytotype identification, and systematic and evolutionary studies in the domesticated sunflower and its relatives.

Abstract
A case of steatocystoma multiplex confined to the face is reported. Review of the literature disclosed similar cases in this striking location. We therefore believe that this facial variant is a distinctive but less well known variant of steatocystoma multiplex. We review the relationship between steatocystoma multiplex and eruptive vellus hair cysts.

Abstract
Benign symmetric acquired lipomatosis is a rare condition characterized by multiple, diffuse, subcutaneous collections of nonencapsulated mature adipose tissue. A thick and disfiguring deposit of fat is symmetrically distributed in the subcutaneous tissue of the neck, upper trunk and proximal portions of the upper extremities. The face, distal extremities, hands, and feet are characteristically spared. We describe a case in which only plantar involvement was present.

Abstract
Several types of vasculitis have been described in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Erythema elevatum diutinum is a rare variant of cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis which, with the exception of the case reported herein, has been described only once in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Our male patient, a longtime intravenous drug abuser, had cutaneous lesions, closely resembling Kaposi's sarcoma, on the extensor surfaces of the lower extremities. Cutaneous biopsy specimens, however, demonstrated leukocytoclastic vasculitis with fibrinoid necrosis of the vessel walls and areas of basophilic degeneration of collagen bundles in early lesions, whereas late lesions showed dense diffuse fibrosis with proliferation of dermal spindle cells and some foci of residual leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Oral therapy with dapsone resulted in marked clearing of the cutaneous lesions within few days. This case raises the necessity of histologic confirmation for all cases of suspected Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We discuss the possible pathogenesis of leukocytoclastic vasculitis in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients.

Abstract
We report a case of localized epidermal necrolysis that developed 24 hours after an intravenous injection of vinblastine. Clinically, the lesions consisted of erythematous macules, vesicles, and bullae with a linear arrangement over the injected vein. Histologically, the lesions showed features closely resembling erythema multiforme (epidermal necrolysis). We discuss the pathogenesis of this curious cutaneous drug reaction and review the literature concerning local cutaneous complications associated with intravenously administered chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract
We report two cases of epithelial necrosis in comatous patients. The cutaneous lesions were characterized by erythematous plaques which later evolved to bullous lesions. Histologic examination demonstrated epidermal necrosis with subepidermal blisters, sparse neutrophilic inflammatory infiltrate and, characteristically, eosinophilic necrosis of the eccrine sweat gland coils.

Abstract
This report describes an example of combined nevus with malignant transformation. The clinical impression was blue nevus. Histologically, the lesion was composed of a cellular blue nevus in the reticular dermis and an overlying compound melanocytic nevus. The junctional component of the melanocytic nevus showed transition to malignant melanoma in situ. A review of the literature failed to find a precedent for the present case.

Abstract
Cutaneous effects secondary to lymphography are rare events. We herein report a patient with Hodgkin's disease who developed a linear dermatitis in both lower limbs 6 days after a pedal lymphography. Histopathologic examination of the lesions demonstrated a subacute dermatitis. Patch tests with the substances used in the lymphography yielded negative results. We discuss the possible pathogenic mechanisms of this striking linear dermatitis.

Abstract
A case of erythema elevatum diutinum (EED) closely resembling porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is reported. The initial skin biopsies were suggestive for PCT but porphyrin levels in the urine, stool and plasma were normal. A further biopsy from an early cutaneous lesion showed a leucocytoclastic vasculitis with fibrinoid necrosis of the vessel walls.

Abstract
A 64-year-old female had breast carcinoma of the right breast, and a mastectomy was performed. Three years later she developed a vesiculobullous eruption along the surgical scar. Histopathological and direct immunofluorescence findings were consistent with a diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris. We discuss the possible pathogenesis for this striking linear distribution of the pemphigus vulgaris lesions.

Abstract
Seventeen patients with well-proven Cushing's syndrome (13 with Cushing's disease, 3 with adrenal tumour and 1 presenting ectopic ACTH syndrome caused by bronchial carcinoid) were investigated by using a single-dose 8 mg dexamethasone nocturnal test. The results obtained were compared with those of the classical 8 mg Liddle's test, metyrapone stimulation, plasma ACTH concentration and with the final diagnosis reached through surgery, pathologic anatomy, and/or clinical and biochemical follow-up of the patients after treatment. The diagnostic efficacy or the predictive power of the test (defined as the ratio between the number of cases in which the diagnosis was correctly predicted and the total number of cases), was at least 82.4% vs 84.6% for the classical 8 mg Liddle's test. This percentage increased to 94.1% when the results of repeated tests on three patients with conflicting data were included. It is concluded that the nocturnal high-dose dexamethasone suppression test is a valuable tool in the aetiological diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome.
