Abstract
Graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (gSGFETs) offer high potential for chemical and biochemical sensing applications. Among the current trends to improve this technology, the functionalization processes are gaining relevance for its crucial impact on biosensing performance. Previous efforts are focused on simplifying the attachment procedure from standard multi-step to single-step strategies, but they still suffer from overreaction, and impurity issues and are limited to a particular ligand. Herein, a novel strategy for single-step immobilization of chemically modified aptamers with fluorenylmethyl and acridine moieties, based on a straightforward synthetic route to overcome the aforementioned limitations is presented. This approach is benchmarked versus a standard multi-step strategy using thrombin as detection model. In order to assess the reliability of the functionalization strategies 48-gSGFETs arrays are employed to acquire large datasets with multiple replicas. Graphene surface characterization demonstrates robust and higher efficiency in the chemical coupling of the aptamers with the single-step strategy, while the electrical response evaluation validates the sensing capability, allowing to implement different alternatives for data analysis and reduce the sensing variability. In this work, a new tool capable of overcome the functionalization challenges of graphene surfaces is provided, paving the way toward the standardization of gSGFETs for biosensing purposes.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is a mutualistic interaction between fungi and most land plants that is underpinned by a bidirectional exchange of nutrients. AM development is a tightly regulated process that encompasses molecular communication for reciprocal recognition, fungal accommodation in root tissues and activation of symbiotic function. As such, a complex network of transcriptional regulation and molecular signaling underlies the cellular and metabolic reprogramming of host cells upon AM fungal colonization. In addition to transcription factors, small RNAs (sRNAs) are emerging as important regulators embedded in the gene network that orchestrates AM development. In addition to controlling cell-autonomous processes, plant sRNAs also function as mobile signals capable of moving to different organs and even to different plants or organisms that interact with plants. AM fungi also produce sRNAs; however, their function in the AM symbiosis remains largely unknown. Here, we discuss the contribution of host sRNAs in the development of AM symbiosis by considering their role in the transcriptional reprogramming of AM fungal colonized cells. We also describe the characteristics of AM fungal-derived sRNAs and emerging evidence for the bidirectional transfer of functional sRNAs between the two partners to mutually modulate gene expression and control the symbiosis.

Abstract
Transcutaneous multisegmental spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has shown superior efficacy in modulating spinal locomotor circuits compared to single-site stimulation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Building on these findings, we hypothesized that administering a single session of tSCS at multiple spinal segments may yield greater enhancements in muscle strength and gait function during stimulation compared to tSCS at only one or two segments. In our study, tSCS was applied at single segments (C5, L1, and Coc1), two segments (C5-L1, C5-Coc1, and L1-Coc1), or multisegments (C5-L1-Coc1) in a randomized order. We evaluated the 6-m walking test (6MWT) and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and assessed the Hmax/Mmax ratio during stimulation in ten individuals with incomplete motor SCI. Our findings indicate that multisegmental tSCS improved walking time and reduced spinal cord excitability, as measured by the Hmax/Mmax ratio, similar to some single or two-site tSCS interventions. However, only multisegmental tSCS resulted in increased tibialis anterior (TA) muscle strength. These results suggest that multisegmental tSCS holds promise for enhancing walking capacity, increasing muscle strength, and altering spinal cord excitability in individuals with incomplete SCI.

Abstract
During the last decade, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) sorafenib and regorafenib have been standard systemic treatments for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Previous data associated sorafenib with inflammasome activation. However, the role of the inflammasome in sorafenib and regorafenib signaling has not been described in liver cancer patients. For this purpose, we analyzed inflammasome-related transcriptomic changes in a murine HCC model. Our data confirmed inflammasome activation after both TKI treatments, sharing a similar pattern of increased gene expression. According to human database results, transcriptional increase of inflammasome genes is associated with poorer prognosis for male liver cancer patients, suggesting a sex-dependent role for inflammasome activation in HCC therapy. In biopsies of HCC and its surrounding tissue, we detected durable increases in the inflammasome activation pattern after sorafenib or regorafenib treatment in male patients. Further supporting its involvement in sorafenib action, inflammasome inhibition (MCC950) enhanced sorafenib anticancer activity in experimental HCC models, while no direct in vitro effect was observed in HCC cell lines. Moreover, activated human THP-1 macrophages released IL-1β after sorafenib administration, while 3D Hep3B spheres displayed increased tumor growth after IL-1β addition, pointing to the liver microenvironment as a key player in inflammasome action. In summary, our results unveil the inflammasome pathway as an actionable target in sorafenib or regorafenib therapy and associate an inflammasome signature in HCC and surrounding tissue with TKI administration. Therefore, targeting inflammasome activation, principally in male patients, could help to overcome sorafenib or regorafenib resistance and enhance the efficacy of TKI treatments in HCC.

Abstract
AIMS Patients with heart failure (HF) can exhibit kinesiophobia, an excessive, debilitating, and irrational fear of movement. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of kinesiophobia in patients with HF by analysing associations with the following variables: musculoskeletal pain, quality of life, quality of sleep, functional capacity, disability, frailty, sex, and age. METHODS AND RESULTS In this cross-sectional study, 107 participants were included, with ages ranging from 28 to 97 years (57% men, mean age 73.18 ± 12.68 years). Multiple regression analyses were performed with all variables, including polynomial regressions for variables with a non-linear relationship. Kinesiophobia was significantly correlated (P < 0.01) with musculoskeletal pain, quality of life, quality of sleep, functional capacity, disability, and being at risk of frailty, while age and sex were not statistically significant. Frailty disability and musculoskeletal pain intensity were variables linearly associated with kinesiophobia, while quality of sleep and disability had a non-linear relationship with kinesiophobia. CONCLUSION Kinesiophobia needs to be evaluated and better understood in patients with HF to improve physical activity and exercise adherence. This study found that musculoskeletal pain intensity, quality of sleep, disability, and frailty risk have a significant association with kinesiophobia in patients with HF. Our results suggest multi-dimensional associations of kinesiophobia in patients with HF, which require further examination and understanding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Control of the zoonotic food-borne parasite Fasciola hepatica remains a major challenge in humans and livestock. It is estimated that annual economic losses due to fasciolosis can reach US$3.2 billion in agriculture and livestock. Moreover, the wide distribution of drug-resistant parasite populations and the absence of a vaccine threaten sustainable control, reinforcing the need for novel flukicides. METHODS The present work analyses the flukicidal activity of a total of 70 benzimidazole derivatives on different stages of F. hepatica. With the aim to select the most potent ones, and screenings were first performed on eggs at decreasing concentrations ranging from 50 to 5 µM and then on adult worms at 10 µM. Only the most effective compounds were also evaluated using a resistant isolate of the parasite. RESULTS After the first screenings at 50 and 10 µM, four hit compounds (BZD31, BZD46, BZD56, and BZD59) were selected and progressed to the next assays. At 5 µM, all hit compounds showed ovicidal activities higher than 71% on the susceptible isolate, but only BZD31 remained considerably active (53%) when they were tested on an albendazol-resistant isolate, even with values superior to the reference drug, albendazole sulfoxide. On the other hand, BZD59 displayed a high motility inhibition when tested on adult worms from an albendazole-resistant isolate after 72 h of incubation. CONCLUSIONS BZD31 and BZD59 compounds could be promising candidates for the development of fasciolicidal compounds or as starting point for the new synthesis of structure-related compounds.

Abstract
We review theoretical approaches for modelling the origin, persistence and change of social norms. The most comprehensive models describe the coevolution of behaviours, personal, descriptive and injunctive norms while considering influences of various authorities and accounting for cognitive processes and between-individual differences. Models show that social norms can improve individual and group well-being. Under some conditions though, deleterious norms can persist in the population through conformity, preference falsification and pluralistic ignorance. Polarization in behaviour and beliefs can be maintained, even when societal advantages of particular behaviours or belief systems over alternatives are clear. Attempts to change social norms can backfire through cognitive processes including cognitive dissonance and psychological reactance. Under some conditions social norms can change rapidly via tipping point dynamics. Norms can be highly susceptible to manipulation, and network structure influences their propagation. Future models should incorporate network structure more thoroughly, explicitly study online norms, consider cultural variations and be applied to real-world processes. Abstract
Fire blight, caused by the plant-pathogenic bacterium Erwinia amylovora, is a highly contagious and difficult-to-control disease due to its efficient dissemination and survival and the scarcity of effective control methods. Copper and antibiotics are the most used treatments but pose environmental and human health risks. Bacteriophages (phages) constitute an ecological, safe, and sustainable fire blight control alternative. The goal of this study was to search for specific E. amylovora phages from plant material, soil, and water samples in Mediterranean environments. A collection of phages able to specifically infect and lyse E. amylovora strains was generated from former fire blight-affected orchards in Eastern Spain. Following in vitro characterization, assays in immature fruit revealed that preventively applying some of the phages or their combinations delayed the onset of fire blight symptoms and reduced the disease's severity, suggesting their biocontrol potential in Spain and other countries. The morphological and molecular characterization of the selected E. amylovora phages classified them as members of the class Caudoviricetes (former Myoviridae family) and genus Kolesnikvirus. This study reveals Mediterranean settings as plausible sources of E. amylovora-specific bacteriophages and provides the first effective European phage cocktails in plant material for the development of sustainable fire blight management measures.

Abstract
The use of fertilizers and pesticides to control plant diseases is widespread in intensive farming causing adverse effects together with the development of antimicrobial resistance pathogens. As the virulence of many Gram-negative phytopathogens is controlled by N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), the enzymatic disruption of this type of quorum-sensing (QS) signal molecules, mechanism known as quorum quenching (QQ), has been proposed as a promising alternative antivirulence therapy. In this study, a novel strain of Bacillus toyonensis isolated from the halophyte plant Arthrocaulon sp. exhibited numerous traits associated with plant growth promotion (PGP) and degraded a broad range of AHLs. Three lactonases and an acylase enzymes were identified in the bacterial genome and verified in vitro. The AHL-degrading activity of strain AA1EC1 significantly attenuated the virulence of relevant phytopathogens causing reduction of soft rot symptoms on potato and carrots. In vivo assays showed that strain AA1EC1 significantly increased plant length, stem width, root and aerial dry weights and total weight of tomato and protected plants against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. To our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate PGP and QQ activities in the species B. toyonensis that make this strain as a promising phytostimulant and biocontrol agent.

Abstract
The reactivity of the heterometallic polynuclear complexes [{Au(R)2 }2 Cu2 (MeCN)2 ]n (R=C6 F5 , C6 Cl5 ) with the thioether crowns 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (L1, [12]aneS3 ), 1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclododecane (L2, [14]aneS4 ), 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22-octathiacyclotetracosane (L3, [24]aneS8 ), and the quinoline functionalized pendant arm derivatives of the 12-membered mixed-donor macrocycles 1-aza-,4,7,10-trithiacyclododecane ([12]aneNS3 ) and 1,7-diaza-4,10-dithiacyclododecane ([12]aneN2 S2 ), L4 and L5, respectively, was investigated in THF solution. While with L4 and L5 only ionic compounds of general formulation [Cu(L)][Au(R)2 ] were isolated and structurally characterized (none of them featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu interactions), with L1-L3, beside similar ionic compounds, some heteronuclear complexes of general formulation [{Au(R)2 }{Cu(L)}] and featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu interactions were also obtained. All of them display rather unusual non-classical C-H⋅⋅⋅Au hydrogen interactions. The complexes display in the solid state different optical properties related to their structures, which have been studied experimentally and theoretically via TD-DFT calculations. In particular, all compounds of the type [{Au(R)2 }{Cu(L)}] featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu metallophilic interactions display luminescence in the solid state both at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K. On the contrary, ionic compounds of general formulation [Cu(L)][Au(R)2 ], except [Cu(L4)][Au(C6 F5 )2 ], are not luminescent.

Abstract
Developing sustainable cost-effective strategies for valorization of field-spent granular activated carbon (s-GAC) from industrial water treatment has gained much interest. Here, we report a cost-effective strategy for the regeneration of s-GAC as an adsorbent in a large-scale drinking water treatment plant and used as an efficient and durable ozonation catalyst in water. To achieve this, a series of samples is prepared by subjecting s-GAC to thermally controlled combustion treatments with and without pyrolysis. The catalytic performance of the optimized sample is evaluated for oxalic acid degradation as the model pollutant under batch (>15 h) and continuous flow operations (>200 h). The partially deactivated catalyst upon reuse is restored by thermal treatment. Electron paramagnetic resonance and selective quenching experiments show the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2) during catalytic ozonation. The GAC-ozonation catalyst is efficient to minimize the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in an urban wastewater effluent.

Abstract
The World Health Organization has highlighted that cancer was the second-highest cause of death in 2019. This research aims to present the current forecasting techniques found in the literature, applied to predict time-series cancer incidence and then, compare these results with the current methodology adopted by the Instituto Nacional do Câncer (INCA) in Brazil. A set of univariate time-series approaches is proposed to aid decision-makers in monitoring and organizing cancer prevention and control actions. Additionally, this can guide oncological research towards more accurate estimates that align with the expected demand. Forecasting techniques were applied to real data from seven types of cancer in a Brazilian district. Each method was evaluated by comparing its fit with real data using the root mean square error, and we also assessed the quality of noise to identify biased models. Notably, three methods proposed in this research have never been applied to cancer prediction before. The data were collected from the INCA website, and the forecast methods were implemented using the R language. Conducting a literature review, it was possible to draw comparisons previous works worldwide to illustrate that cancer prediction is often focused on breast and lung cancers, typically utilizing a limited number of time-series models to find the best fit for each case. Additionally, in comparison to the current method applied in Brazil, it has been shown that employing more generalized forecast techniques can provide more reliable predictions. By evaluating the noise in the current method, this research shown that the existing prediction model is biased toward two of the studied cancers Comparing error results between the mentioned approaches and the current technique, it has been shown that the current method applied by INCA underperforms in six out of seven types of cancer tested. Moreover, this research identified that the current method can produce a biased prediction for two of the seven cancers evaluated. Therefore, it is suggested that the methods evaluated in this work should be integrated into the INCA cancer forecast methodology to provide reliable predictions for Brazilian healthcare professionals, decision-makers, and oncological researchers.

Abstract
The growth arrest and DNA damage inducible (GADD)45 family includes three small and ubiquitously distributed proteins (GADD45A, GADD45B, and GADD45G) that regulate numerous cellular processes associated with stress signaling and injury response. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the current literature investigating GADD45A, the first discovered member of the family. We first depict how its levels are regulated by a myriad of genotoxic and non-genotoxic stressors, and through the combined action of intricate transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and even, posttranslational mechanisms. GADD45A is a recognized tumor suppressor and, for this reason, we next summarize its role in cancer, as well as the different mechanisms by which it regulates cell cycle, DNA repair, and apoptosis. Beyond these most well-known actions, GADD45A may also influence catabolic and anabolic pathways in the liver, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, among others. Not surprisingly, GADD45A may trigger AMP-activated protein kinase activity, a master regulator of metabolism, and is known to act as a transcriptional coregulator of numerous nuclear receptors. GADD45A has also been reported to display a cytoprotective role by regulating inflammation, fibrosis and oxidative stress in several organs and tissues, and is regarded an important contributor for the development of heart failure. Overall data point to that GADD45A may play an important role in metabolic, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, and also autoimmune-related disorders. Thus, the potential mechanisms by which dysregulation of GADD45A activity may contribute to the progression of these diseases are also reviewed below.

Abstract
Selecting a good mate is a decision with important fitness consequences. For this reason, mate choice has promoted the evolution of sexual ornaments signaling the quality of an individual. In fossorial animals, inhabiting visually restricted underground environments, chemical senses should be very important for mate choice. We examined whether sexual chemical signals (substrate scent marks) produced by males of the Iberian worm lizard, Blanus cinereus, a strictly fossorial blind amphisbaenian, provide information to females on morphological traits and health state. We administered corticosterone (CORT) to males simulating a continuous stressor affecting their health. Females preferred settling at sites scent-marked by males in comparison with similar sites with female scent or unmarked sites, but the attractiveness of males' scent differed between individuals. Females preferred scent marks of larger/older males and with a higher immune response, while their body condition and CORT treatment were unrelated to female preferences. Chemical analyses showed that proportions of some compounds in precloacal secretions of males (used to produce scent marks) were correlated with the morphological (body size) and health state (immune response and body condition, but not CORT treatment) of these males. These results suggest that females may make site-selection decisions based on assessing the chemical characteristics of males' scent marks, which were reliably related to some of the traits of the male that produced the scent. Therefore, females might use chemical senses to increase the opportunities to find and mate with males of high quality, coping with the restrictions of the subterranean environment.

Abstract
The level of student attention in class greatly affects their academic performance. Teachers typically rely on visual inspection to react to students' attention in time, but this subjective method leads to inconsistencies across classes. Online education exacerbates the issue as students can turn off cameras and microphones to keep their own privacy. To address this, we present a novel, low-cost EEG-based platform for assessing students' attention and estimating their academic performance. In a study involving 34 secondary school students (aged 14 to 16), participants watched an academic video and answered evaluation questions while their EEG activity was recorded using a commercial headset. The results demonstrate a significant correlation (0.53, p-value = 0.003) between the power spectral density (PSD) of the EEG beta band (12-30 Hz) and students' academic performance. Additionally, there was a notable difference in PSD-beta between high and low academic performers. These findings encourage the use of PSD-beta for the immediate and objective assessment of both the student attention and the subsequent academic performance. The platform offers valuable and objective feedback to teachers, enhancing the effectiveness of both face-to-face and online teaching and learning environments.

Abstract
Validated and curated datasets are essential for studying the spread and control of infectious diseases in hospital settings, requiring clinical information on patients' evolution and their location. The literature shows that approaches based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the development of clinical-support systems have benefits that are increasingly recognized. However, there is a lack of available high-volume data, necessary for trusting such AI models. One effective method in this situation involves the simulation of realistic data. Existing simulators primarily focus on implementing compartmental epidemiological models and contact networks to validate epidemiological hypotheses. Nevertheless, other practical aspects such as the hospital building distribution, shifts or safety policies on infections has received minimal attention. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for a simulator of nosocomial infection spread, combining agent-based patient description, spatial-temporal constraints of the hospital settings, and microorganism behavior driven by epidemiological models. The predictive validity of the model was analyzed considering micro and macro-face validation, parameter calibration based on literature review, model alignment, and sensitive analysis with an expert. This simulation model is useful in monitoring infections and in the decision-making process in a hospital, by helping to detect spatial-temporal patterns and predict statistical data about the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A positive conception of sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities is crucial and relies on several social and interpersonal contexts. The goal of this study is to analyse the interaction and impact of three different contextual groups: individuals with intellectual disabilities, their parents, and professionals working with them. METHODS Survey data were collected from 330 people with intellectual disabilities attending occupational centres in eastern Spain, 330 parents, and 100 professionals. RESULTS Correlation and variance analyses of dyad-level data show significant differences among the three groups in all variables. Professionals perceived people with intellectual disabilities to have higher knowledge of socio-sexual norms than people with intellectual disabilities actually appear to be, but they are also more concerned about aspects related to this area of people with intellectual disabilities. Compared to people with intellectual disabilities and professionals, parents perceived people with intellectual disabilities to have lower sexual knowledge. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates inconsistent perceived knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities' socio-sexual norms and sexual knowledge among the three groups, leading to disparate levels of concern regarding people with intellectual disabilities sexuality. Thus, the need to collect information from different perspectives for more accurate reporting and the critical need for sex education programs that involve the target population, but also parents and professionals who frequently interact with people with intellectual disabilities are highlighted.

Abstract
Anthropogenic CO2 can be converted to alternative fuels and value-added products by electrocatalytic routes. Copper-based catalysts are found to be the star materials for obtaining longer-chain carbon compounds beyond 2e- products. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal fabrication of a highly robust electrocatalyst: in-situ grown heterostructures of plate-like CuO-Cu2 O on carbon black. Simultaneous synthesis of copper-carbon catalysts with varied amounts of copper was conducted to determine the optimum blend. It is observed that the optimum ratio and structure have aided in achieving the state of art faradaic efficiency for ethylene >45 % at -1.6 V vs. RHE at industrially relevant high current densities over 160 to 200 mA ⋅ cm-2 . It is understood that the in-situ modification of CuO to Cu2 O during the electrolysis is the driving force for the highly selective conversion of CO2 to ethylene through the *CO intermediates at the onset potentials followed by C-C coupling. The excellent distribution of Cu-based platelets on the carbon structure enables rapid electron transfer and enhanced catalytic efficiency. It is inferred that choosing the right composition of the catalyst by tuning the catalyst layer over the gas diffusion electrode can substantially affect the product selectivity and promote reaching the potential industrial scale.

Abstract
Most advanced autonomous driving systems (ADS) today rely on the prior creation of high-definition maps (HD maps). This process is expensive and needs to be performed frequently to keep up with the changing conditions of the road environment. Creating accurate navigation maps online is an alternative to reduce the cost and broaden the current operational design domains (ODD) of modern ADS. This paper offers a snapshot of the state of the art in drivable area estimation, which is an essential technology to deploy ADS in ODDs where HD maps are limited or unavailable. The proposed review introduces a novel architecture breakdown that fits learning-based and non-learning-based techniques and allows the analysis of a set of impactful and recent drivable area algorithms. In addition to that, complimentary information for practitioners is provided: (i) an assessment of the influence of modern sensing technologies on the task under study and (ii) a selection of relevant datasets for evaluation and benchmarking purposes.

Abstract
Cardiac auscultation is an accessible diagnostic screening tool that can help to identify patients with heart murmurs, who may need follow-up diagnostic screening and treatment for abnormal cardiac function. However, experts are needed to interpret the heart sounds, limiting the accessibility of cardiac auscultation in resource-constrained environments. Therefore, the George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge 2022 invited teams to develop algorithmic approaches for detecting heart murmurs and abnormal cardiac function from phonocardiogram (PCG) recordings of heart sounds. For the Challenge, we sourced 5272 PCG recordings from 1452 primarily pediatric patients in rural Brazil, and we invited teams to implement diagnostic screening algorithms for detecting heart murmurs and abnormal cardiac function from the recordings. We required the participants to submit the complete training and inference code for their algorithms, improving the transparency, reproducibility, and utility of their work. We also devised an evaluation metric that considered the costs of screening, diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and treatment, allowing us to investigate the benefits of algorithmic diagnostic screening and facilitate the development of more clinically relevant algorithms. We received 779 algorithms from 87 teams during the Challenge, resulting in 53 working codebases for detecting heart murmurs and abnormal cardiac function from PCG recordings. These algorithms represent a diversity of approaches from both academia and industry, including methods that use more traditional machine learning techniques with engineered clinical and statistical features as well as methods that rely primarily on deep learning models to discover informative features. The use of heart sound recordings for identifying heart murmurs and abnormal cardiac function allowed us to explore the potential of algorithmic approaches for providing more accessible diagnostic screening in resource-constrained environments. The submission of working, open-source algorithms and the use of novel evaluation metrics supported the reproducibility, generalizability, and clinical relevance of the research from the Challenge.

Abstract
The study of a species' thermal tolerance and vital rates responses provides useful metrics to characterize its vulnerability to ocean warming. Under prolonged thermal stress, plastic and adaptive processes can adjust the physiology of organisms. Yet it is uncertain whether the species can expand their upper thermal limits to cope with rapid and extreme changes in environmental temperature. In this study, we reared the marine copepod Paracartia grani at control (19°C) and warmer conditions (25°C) for >18 generations and assessed their survival and fecundity under short-term exposure to a range of temperatures (11-34°C). After multigenerational warming, the upper tolerance to acute exposure (24 h) increased by 1-1.3°C, although this enhancement decreased to 0.3-0.8°C after longer thermal stress (7 days). Warm-reared copepods were smaller and produced significantly fewer offspring at the optimum temperature. No shift in the thermal breadth of the reproductive response was observed. Yet the fecundity rates of the warm-reared copepods in the upper thermal range were up to 21-fold higher than the control. Our results show that chronic warming improved tolerance to stress temperatures and fecundity of P. grani, therefore, enhancing its chances to persist under extreme heat events.

Abstract
Cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most important horticultural crops in the world. The optimization of culture media for callus formation and tissue regeneration of different tomato genotypes presents numerous biotechnological applications. In this work, we have analyzed the effect of different concentrations of zeatin and indole-3-acetic acid on the regeneration of cotyledon explants in tomato cultivars M82 and Micro-Tom. We evaluated regeneration parameters such as the percentage of callus formation and the area of callus formed, as well as the initiation percentage and the number of adventitious shoots. The best hormone combination produced shoot-like structures after 2-3 weeks. We observed the formation of leaf primordia from these structures after about 3-4 weeks. Upon transferring the regenerating micro-stems to a defined growth medium, it was possible to obtain whole plantlets between 4 and 6 weeks. This hormone combination was applied to other genotypes of S. lycopersicum, including commercial varieties and ancestral tomato varieties. Our method is suitable for obtaining many plantlets of different tomato genotypes from cotyledon explants in a very short time, with direct applications for plant transformation, use of gene editing techniques, and vegetative propagation of elite cultivars.

Abstract
Synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composites with a controlled morphology is an important requirement to access materials of desired patterning and composition. Since the last decade, MOF growth from sacrificial metal oxide layer is increasingly developed as it represents an efficient pathway to functionalize a large number of substrates. In this study, porphyrin-based Al-PMOF thin films were grown on conductive transparent oxide substrates from sacrificial layers of ALD-deposited alumina oxide. The control of the solvent composition and the number of atomic layer deposition (ALD) cycles allow us to tune the crystallinity, morphology and thickness of the produced thin films. Photophysical studies evidence that Al-PMOF thin films present light absorption and emission properties governed by the porphyrinic linker, without any quenching upon increasing the film thickness. Al-PMOF thin films obtained through this methodology present a remarkably high optical quality both in terms of transparency and coverage. The porosity of the samples is demonstrated by ellipsometry and used for Zn(II) insertion inside the MOF thin film. The multifunctional transparent, porous and luminescent thin film grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) is used as an electrode capable of photoinduced charge separation upon simulated sunlight irradiation.

Abstract
Many prokaryotic operons encode a processive antitermination (P-AT) system. Transcription complexes associated with an antitermination factor can bypass multiple transcription termination signals regardless of their sequences. However, to avoid compromising transcriptional regulation of downstream regions, the terminator at the end of the operon needs to be resistant to antitermination. So far, no studies on the mechanism of resistance to antitermination have been reported. The recently discovered conAn P-AT system is composed of two components that are encoded at the start of many conjugation operons on plasmids of Gram-positive bacteria. Here we report the identification of a conAn-resistant terminator, named TerR, in the conjugation operon of the Bacillus subtilis plasmid pLS20, re-defining the end of the conjugation operon. We investigated the various characteristics of TerR and show that its extraordinary long stem is the determining feature for resistance to antitermination. This is the first P-AT resistance mechanism to be reported.

Abstract
A collection of 30 melon introgression lines (ILs) was developed from the wild accession Ames 24297 (TRI) into 'Piel de Sapo' (PS) genetic background. Each IL carried an average of 1.4 introgressions from TRI, and the introgressions represented 91.4% of the TRI genome. Twenty-two ILs, representing 75% of the TRI genome, were evaluated in greenhouse (Algarrobo and Meliana) and field (Alcàsser) trials, mainly to study traits related to domestication syndrome such as fruit weight (FW) and flesh content (FFP), as well as other fruit quality traits as fruit shape (FS), flesh firmness (FF), soluble solid concentration (SSC), rind color and abscission layer. The IL collection showed an impressive variation in size-related traits, with FW ranging from 800 to 4100 g, reflecting the strong effect of the wild genome on these traits. Most of the ILs produced smaller fruits compared with PS; however, unexpectedly, the IL TRI05-2 produced bigger fruits, likely due to new epistatic interacions with the PS genetic background. In contrast, the genotypic effect for FS was smaller, and few QTLs with notable effects were detected. Interestingly, variability was also observed for FFP, FF and SSC, rind color and abscission layer formation. Genes in these introgressions are candidates for having been involved in melon domestication and diversification as well. These results confirm that the TRI IL collection is a very powerful tool for mapping traits of agronomic interest in melon, allowing the confirmation of previously reported QTLs and the identification of new ones to better understand the domestication process of this crop.

Abstract
Stable and efficient high-power biohybrid light-emitting diodes (Bio-HLEDs) using fluorescent proteins (FPs) in photon downconverting filters have not been achieved yet, reaching best efficiencies of 130 lm W-1 stable for >5 h. This is related to the rise of the device temperature (70-80 °C) caused by FP-motion and quick heat-transmission in water-based filters, they lead to a strong thermal emission quenching followed by the quick chromophore deactivation via photoinduced H-transfer. To tackle both issues at once, this work shows an elegant concept of a new FP-based nanoparticle, in which the FP core is shielded by a SiO2 -shell (FP@SiO2 ) with no loss of the photoluminescence figures-of-merit over years in foreign environments: dry powder at 25 °C (ambient) or constant 50 °C, as well as suspensions in organic solvents. This enables the preparation of water-free photon downconverting coatings with FP@SiO2 , realizing on-chip high-power Bio-HLEDs with 100 lm W-1 stable for >120 h. Both thermal emission quenching and H-transfer deactivation are suppressed, since the device temperature holds <40 °C and remote high-power Bio-HLEDs exhibit final stabilities of 130 days compared to reference devices with water-based FP@SiO2 (83 days) and FP-polymer coatings (>100 h). Hence, FP@SiO2 is a new paradigm toward water-free zero-thermal-quenching biophosphors for first-class high-power Bio-HLEDs.

Abstract
The structure and functions of the central nervous system are influenced by environmental stimuli, which also play an important role in brain diseases. Enriched environment (EE) consists of producing modifications in the environment of standard laboratory animals to induce an improvement in their biological conditions. This paradigm promotes transcriptional and translational effects that result in ameliorated motor, sensory, and cognitive stimulation. EE has been shown to enhance experience-dependent cellular plasticity and cognitive performance in animals housed under these conditions compared with animals housed under standard conditions. In addition, several studies claim that EE induces nerve repair by restoring functional activities through morphological, cellular, and molecular adaptations in the brain that have clinical relevance in neurological and psychiatric disorders. In fact, the effects of EE have been studied in different animal models of psychiatric and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, ischemic brain injury, or traumatic brain injury, delaying the onset and progression of a wide variety of symptoms of these disorders. In this review, we analyze the action of EE focused on diseases of the central nervous system and the translation to humans to develop a bridge to its application.

Abstract
Liposomes made of partially purified phospholipids (PL) from Argentine red shrimp waste oil were loaded with two antioxidant lipid co-extracts (hexane-soluble, Hx and acetone-soluble, Ac) to provide a higher content of omega-3 fatty acids. The physical properties of the liposomes were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the lipid extracts and liposomal suspensions were evaluated in terms of Superoxide and ABTS radical scavenging capacities and TNF-α inhibition. Uni-lamellar spherical liposomes (z-average ≈ 145 nm) with strong negative ζ potential (≈ -67 mV) were obtained in all cases. The high content of neutral lipids in the Hx extract caused structural changes in the bilayer membrane and decreased entrapment efficiency regarding astaxanthin and EPA + DHA contents. The liposomes loaded with the Hx/Ac extracts showed higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity compared with empty liposomes. The liposomal dispersions improved the physical and oxidative stability of water-in-oil emulsions as compared with the PL extract, inducing pronounced close packing of water droplets. The liposomes decreased hydroperoxide formation in freshly made emulsions and prevented thio-barbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) accumulation during chilled storage. Liposomes from shrimp waste could be valuable nanocarriers and stabilizers in functional food emulsions.

Abstract
In recent years, 3D in vitro modeling of human skeletal muscle has emerged as a subject of increasing interest, due to its applicability in basic studies or screening platforms. These models strive to recapitulate key features of muscle architecture and function, such as cell alignment, maturation, and contractility in response to different stimuli. To this end, it is required to culture cells in biomimetic hydrogels suspended between two anchors. Currently available protocols are often complex to produce, have a high rate of breakage, or are not adapted to imaging and stimulation. Therefore, we sought to develop a simplified and reliable protocol, which still enabled versatility in the study of muscle function. In our method, we have used human immortalized myoblasts cultured in a hydrogel composed of MatrigelTM and fibrinogen, to create muscle strips suspended between two VELCROTM anchors. The resulting muscle constructs show a differentiated phenotype and contractile activity in response to electrical, chemical and optical stimulation. This activity is analyzed by two alternative methods, namely contraction analysis and calcium analysis with Fluo-4 AM. In all, our protocol provides an optimized version of previously published methods, enabling individual imaging of muscle bundles and straightforward analysis of muscle response with standard image analysis software. This system provides a start-to-finish guide on how to produce, validate, stimulate, and analyze bioengineered muscle. This ensures that the system can be quickly established by researchers with varying degrees of expertise, while maintaining reliability and similarity to native muscle.

Abstract
Light stimulates carotenoid synthesis in plants during photomorphogenesis through the expression of PHYTOENE SYNTHASE (PSY), a key gene in carotenoid biosynthesis. The orange carrot (Daucus carota) synthesizes and accumulates high amounts of carotenoids in the taproot that grows underground. Contrary to other organs, light impairs carrot taproot development and represses the expression of carotenogenic genes, such as DcPSY1 and DcPSY2, reducing carotenoid accumulation. By means of RNA sequencing, in a previous analysis, we observed that carrot PHYTOCHROME RAPIDLY REGULATED1 (DcPAR1) is more highly expressed in the underground grown taproot compared with those grown in light. PAR1 is a transcriptional cofactor with a negative role in shade avoidance syndrome regulation in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) through the dimerization with PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORs (PIFs), allowing a moderate synthesis of carotenoids. Here, we show that overexpressing AtPAR1 in carrot increases carotenoid production in taproots grown underground as well as DcPSY1 expression. The high expression of AtPAR1 and DcPAR1 led us to hypothesize a functional role of DcPAR1 that was verified through in vivo binding to AtPIF7 and overexpression in Arabidopsis, where AtPSY expression and carotenoid accumulation increased together with a photomorphogenic phenotype. Finally, DcPAR1 antisense carrot lines presented a dramatic decrease in carotenoid levels and in relative expression of key carotenogenic genes as well as impaired taproot development. These results suggest that DcPAR1 is a key factor for secondary root development and carotenoid synthesis in carrot taproot grown underground.

Abstract
Fluorescence microscopy techniques have experienced a substantial increase in the visualization and analysis of many biological processes in life science. We describe a semiautomated and versatile tool called Cell-TypeAnalyzer to avoid the time-consuming and biased manual classification of cells according to cell types. It consists of an open-source plugin for Fiji or ImageJ to detect and classify cells in 2D images. Our workflow consists of (a) image preprocessing actions, data spatial calibration, and region of interest for analysis; (b) segmentation to isolate cells from background (optionally including user-defined preprocessing steps helping the identification of cells); (c) extraction of features from each cell; (d) filters to select relevant cells; (e) definition of specific criteria to be included in the different cell types; (f) cell classification; and (g) flexible analysis of the results. Our software provides a modular and flexible strategy to perform cell classification through a wizard-like graphical user interface in which the user is intuitively guided through each step of the analysis. This procedure may be applied in batch mode to multiple microscopy files. Once the analysis is set up, it can be automatically and efficiently performed on many images. The plugin does not require any programming skill and can analyze cells in many different acquisition setups.
